00:00:00.000 There have been more funny moments in, like, death row execution chambers over the last 20 years than in SNL skits.
00:00:10.500 For our next edition of Try to Laugh, we are going to try to harpoon the great white whale. 0.98
00:00:18.600 This is the Moby Dick of unfunny woke garbage. 0.98
00:00:22.320 We've tried and failed to laugh at jokes told by feminist comedians many times, but this is a little bit different. 0.98
00:00:28.500 This, I think, is a greater challenge.
00:00:30.520 This time, we're going to try to laugh at Saturday Night Live, the modern, current version of it.
00:00:35.940 What I have to say right now, I'd be a little cringe.
00:00:37.800 Now, as you know, SNL has not been funny for about 20 years, and that's probably being generous.
00:00:43.860 Samantha Bee has told more funny jokes in the last two decades than SNL has. 0.98
00:00:48.260 Yeah, they're landing on my face now.
00:00:50.100 That might be going a little too far.
00:00:51.180 Put it this way, there have been more funny moments in, like, death row execution chambers over the last 20 years than in SNL skits.
00:01:01.540 First time.
00:01:03.520 I have no idea how it manages to stay on the air, except that it comes on at night and everyone's either asleep or drunk when it comes on late on a Saturday night.
00:01:11.480 Boring! Boring!
00:01:13.220 Boring!
00:01:13.900 So I think maybe no one's, like, noticed how bad it's gotten.
00:01:17.200 It's allowed to just linger on, lifeless, half-dead, dried up, shriveled, confused.
00:01:22.780 There's an obvious Joe Biden joke here, but I'm trying to think of another analogy.
00:01:26.400 True international depression!
00:01:28.140 I can't, so, yeah, like Joe Biden.
00:01:30.060 We're going to look at the most recent season, which is now mercifully over,
00:01:34.140 and we'll check some of the skits to see if we can find something, anything worthy of even a modest chuckle.
00:01:38.900 That's where I'm setting the bar.
00:01:40.160 Not even laugh.
00:01:40.880 It's like, this is a try-to-chuckle thing.
00:01:43.120 We'll start with this skit titled, No More Masks.
00:01:46.780 And now, a message from Dr. Anthony Fauci.
00:01:56.980 It's your boy, Fauci, the patron saint of Purell.
00:02:01.080 As you probably heard, we got some very good news this week,
00:02:04.280 and I'm not just talking about J-Lo and Ben Affleck.
00:02:06.540 The CDC announced that people who are vaccinated no longer need to wear masks, outdoors or indoors.
00:02:14.660 Pretty great, right?
00:02:15.840 This is Kate McKinnon, right?
00:02:18.220 Why is she the resident impressionist over at SNL? 1.00
00:02:21.060 Something should work, but do they?
00:02:23.300 Isn't an impressionist supposed to, you know, be good at impressions?
00:02:28.400 I always say life is like a box of chocolates.
00:02:31.300 Dude, you have what it takes. 0.97
00:02:33.220 That guy legislates from the bench, but he measures from the balls. 0.97
00:02:37.320 Isn't that what you want out of an impressionist? 0.97
00:02:39.920 Yeah.
00:02:40.720 No, I don't know.
00:02:42.060 Hers are all terrible.
00:02:42.860 Kate McKinnon is about as witty and funny as, like, your drunk aunt at Thanksgiving.
00:02:47.640 That one didn't count.
00:02:49.400 Anyway, the point is, she's not very funny.
00:02:51.340 We're going to give this a chance, because there should be a lot of potential here to make some funny jokes and have a funny skit.
00:02:57.980 So we'll keep watching.
00:02:59.360 A lot of people had questions, such as, what does that mean?
00:03:03.080 What the hell are you talking about?
00:03:05.120 Is this a trap? 0.58
00:03:06.820 So, to clear things up, I found a few doctors at the CDC who minored in theater.
00:03:11.920 And I asked them to reenact various scenarios in order to demonstrate correct mask behavior.
00:03:18.520 And remember, they only had 24 hours to put this little show together.
00:03:21.940 So, please welcome the CDC players and their first scene, Man Walks Into a Bar.
00:03:32.820 Welcome to a bar.
00:03:34.560 Thank you.
00:03:35.220 Do I still have to wear a mask indoors?
00:03:37.380 You actually do not.
00:03:38.760 Great.
00:03:39.140 Well, as long as you're vaccinated.
00:03:41.880 No, I'm not.
00:03:42.900 Oh, then that's bad.
00:03:44.440 Well, I'm entering a bar at 11 a.m.
00:03:46.500 Did you really think I was vaxxed?
00:03:48.120 Because that's on you.
00:03:49.940 You're right.
00:03:50.960 I deserve COVID.
00:03:52.500 End scene.
00:03:54.860 Just pausing to see if I can hear actual crickets.
00:03:57.820 This is like the comedic stylings of Kamala Harris.
00:04:00.800 No.
00:04:02.200 This seems like the White House just gave them a PSA to perform as comedy.
00:04:07.120 And this is one of the problems for SNL is that comedy should be transgressive and countercultural and, you know, rebellious and kind of and kind of that's what it should be.
00:04:18.320 And, yes, offensive.
00:04:19.860 I mean, comedy should be all of those things.
00:04:22.760 And SNL is not that.
00:04:24.700 SNL is now a mouthpiece for the elites, for the government.
00:04:27.500 But let's move on to another sketch.
00:04:30.320 And here we go.
00:04:32.020 If you watched The Undoing, you might have noticed that one of the stars of the show, Nicole Kidman, sang the theme song.
00:04:37.900 While I'm alone, as blue as can be.
00:04:41.520 My son.
00:04:42.700 Dream a little dream of me.
00:04:47.140 Did you notice my coat?
00:04:48.660 We did.
00:04:49.220 Inspired by Nicole, stars of your other favorite shows are now singing their theme songs on, now that's what I call theme songs sung by the stars of the show.
00:04:58.580 So enjoy this original theme song that was cut from the opening of Queen's Gambit.
00:05:02.380 Chess and drugs and drugs and chess.
00:05:04.440 Girl playing chess, then doing drugs, then playing chess. 0.97
00:05:09.680 Now when you see people playing chess, you'll know that they're on drugs.
00:05:14.500 Hey, if you like Stranger Things, you'll love the new season four opening credits, performed by Sheriff Jim Hopper.
00:05:22.980 Welcome to the 80s, I'm about to blow your mind.
00:05:25.640 In Hawkins, Indiana, scary aliens you'll find.
00:05:28.580 Lots of kid actors, but they're actually good.
00:05:31.360 There's something strange in your neighborhood.
00:05:35.240 This script was written in 15 minutes before showtime, right?
00:05:38.560 It had to be.
00:05:39.580 Well, do it live! 1.00
00:05:40.540 F*** it! 1.00
00:05:41.180 Probably by the janitor or someone. 1.00
00:05:42.820 They have a team of writers, right?
00:05:44.900 A team of writers came up with this and they all said it was good.
00:05:50.080 And it made its way through a purposeful process onto the air.
00:05:56.260 Did hackers, like, hack into the SNL broadcast and pipe this skit in to embarrass the show?
00:06:03.520 I'm just trying to figure it out because this is bad.
00:06:05.680 We'll try something that seems...
00:06:07.080 Okay, I have no idea what this is.
00:06:08.340 This is a skit called The Uli Show.
00:06:11.600 Don't know what it is.
00:06:12.460 Wild card.
00:06:13.520 Let's try it.
00:06:14.480 You're watching Icelandic Public Television.
00:06:17.940 Pop culture.
00:06:19.240 Bops.
00:06:20.460 Celebrities.
00:06:21.960 Games.
00:06:23.200 Candy.
00:06:24.220 It's The Uli Show.
00:06:28.140 And now, let's meet host, Iceland's number one social media star, Uli!
00:06:35.260 Peekaboo!
00:06:36.180 Hello, and welcome to The Uli Show.
00:06:40.260 Pretty cool!
00:06:41.960 I'm Uli, and this is my side guy, Bjorn.
00:06:46.780 We have big show today, Uli.
00:06:49.540 So cool!
00:06:51.260 Iceland's number one comedy duo is here, Thorbo and Greta!
00:06:57.100 Uhhh! 0.99
00:06:59.120 Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!
00:07:01.060 Hilarious!
00:07:02.300 So, you have a good weekend, born?
00:07:04.560 Yes, I visited my elf shrine, Uli.
00:07:08.940 I can't continue with that.
00:07:09.980 Is this a recurring bit they do?
00:07:11.860 Is there some context I'm missing, maybe?
00:07:14.680 Context like LSD?
00:07:16.340 Maybe that's the context in which I need to be viewing this particular skit.
00:07:19.840 So, it seems that the SNL kind of fluctuates between banal, politically correct tripe, and
00:07:24.980 then stuff that's weird, but forgets that weird in and of itself isn't funny.
00:07:29.780 You have to be funny as well as weird.
00:07:32.700 You still have to make jokes within the weirdness.
00:07:36.080 But you know what?
00:07:36.560 I want to be fair.
00:07:39.140 I want to really give them a chance.
00:07:41.180 Because I see that we have a...
00:07:43.160 They did a bit on gay pride.
00:07:45.160 So, they have a skit on gay pride.
00:07:46.280 We're in gay pride month.
00:07:48.180 As I'm sure you're aware.
00:07:49.240 You could not be aware that we're in gay pride month. 0.66
00:07:52.020 Because every time you leave your house, you're beat over the head with it by two by fours. 0.99
00:07:56.200 Here's a chance for some topical and really edgy humor about gay pride. 0.99
00:08:02.920 Does SNL have the balls, so to speak, to make jokes about gay pride? 0.93
00:08:06.840 To actually satirize the concept? 0.99
00:08:10.420 There's a lot to satirize, certainly.
00:08:12.760 And we will not get my hopes up, but we'll see. 0.81
00:08:16.580 Hey, all you she's, gays, and nays. 1.00
00:08:18.380 It's the month of almost June. 0.81
00:08:20.120 And you know what that means.
00:08:21.740 Pride is around the corner.
00:08:23.100 But last year, pride didn't happen.
00:08:24.980 So now, we're making up for lost time.
00:08:29.680 Pride is a celebration.
00:08:31.840 Yeah, that's what it's about.
00:08:33.760 Last year, we couldn't meet up.
00:08:35.680 But this time, it's allowed.
00:08:37.660 With my queer friends and allies.
00:08:39.620 Now it's time to go out.
00:08:41.260 Ooh, ooh. 0.64
00:08:42.200 We get to do it all again.
00:08:44.320 Now we're out on the floor, but I don't see my crush.
00:08:48.440 He's not texting me back.
00:08:50.400 Well, I'll just brush it off.
00:08:52.380 I have a mental breakdown.
00:08:54.340 Make my friends take care of me.
00:08:56.240 And I think, woo!
00:08:57.280 Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's pride again.
00:09:02.140 We've been waiting so long.
00:09:04.080 It's pride again.
00:09:05.980 For so much to go wrong.
00:09:07.980 It's pride again. 0.94
00:09:10.060 Santa con, but for queers. 1.00
00:09:12.440 This is our St. Paddy's Day. 0.99
00:09:14.680 Acting sloppy, because we're gay. 0.99
00:09:17.440 Okay, so they made the bold choice to be not funny once again. 0.95
00:09:22.420 It's a bold strategy, Cotton. 0.99
00:09:24.220 By the way, I hope all the people in that sketch are actually gay. 0.96
00:09:26.460 Otherwise, this would be appropriation, which is very offensive. 0.81
00:09:30.220 I'm guessing they're probably safe as far as that goes.
00:09:32.960 Out of all the funny and controversial things they could have done with a gay pride skit, 0.99
00:09:39.740 this is what they do instead.
00:09:41.860 I'm not even sure what the joke is supposed to be.
00:09:45.100 All my queer friends and allies.
00:09:48.180 That's hilarious.
00:09:49.540 Yeah, that's not funny.
00:09:50.960 It seems with every sketch, they kind of studiously examine all the potential places to take it.
00:09:56.780 All of the possible directions.
00:09:58.740 And then they choose the least funny one every time.
00:10:01.300 It's kind of impressive, actually.
00:10:03.440 They succeed in being mostly inoffensive, but they fail at being a comedy show.
00:10:08.100 Which is what their job is, I think.
00:10:10.080 Or so the Germans would have us believe.
00:10:12.480 The good news, though, is that you can put it on while you fall asleep.
00:10:15.740 And you don't have to worry about being kept awake by your own laughter.
00:10:19.620 And that, my friends, is looking on the bright side.
00:10:23.840 Video games.
00:10:25.500 Yeah.
00:10:26.200 Thank you.
00:10:26.700 Goodbye.
00:10:26.760 Bye.
00:10:26.780 Bye.
00:10:26.960 Bye.
00:10:27.660 Bye.
00:10:27.920 Bye.
00:10:28.800 Bye.
00:10:29.740 Bye.
00:10:30.560 Bye.
00:10:35.900 Bye.
00:10:36.100 Bye.
00:10:36.400 Bye.
00:10:38.240 Bye.
00:10:38.360 Bye.
00:10:39.160 Bye.
00:10:39.940 Bye.
00:10:40.380 Bye.
00:10:41.140 Bye.
00:10:41.340 Bye.
00:10:42.100 Bye.
00:10:42.640 Bye.
00:10:43.780 Bye.
00:10:48.440 Bye.
00:10:49.540 Bye.
00:10:49.680 Bye.
00:10:50.000 Bye.
00:10:50.260 Bye.
00:10:50.620 Bye.
00:10:51.120 Bye.
00:10:51.420 Bye.
