00:00:25.860 the victim of an attempted assassination. He was grazed by a bullet, according to local

00:00:33.660 authorities. The Butler County District Attorney, Richard Goldinger, telling The Washington Post

00:00:39.640 that Trump was grazed by gunfire but is safe. We are receiving similar messages from the Secret

00:00:45.760 Service that Trump is safe and that he's been removed from the scene, but he was bloodied

00:00:51.300 and he was grazed by gunfire. The latest reporting out of The Washington Post, again, citing the local

00:00:57.960 district attorney from Butler County, is that an audience member was killed and the shooter is dead

00:01:04.300 as well. Another person said to be in serious condition, according to this prosecutor. Again,

00:01:10.940 this is from the prosecutor to The Washington Post. To reiterate, Trump grazed by gunfire,

00:01:16.200 an audience member was killed. The shooter is also dead. Killed, we understand, by either

00:01:22.440 Secret Service or by local law enforcement, who we believe unleashed fire once the former president

00:01:29.220 had been grazed. Another person in serious condition at this hour, and that Donald Trump is receiving

00:01:37.220 medical care at this hour, and I'm sure it will be very thorough, even though he looks like he's all

00:01:42.320 right. They need to make absolutely sure that that's the case. We're going to play the video for you

00:08:45.740 has been done to this man. You and I sat together in 2015 and national review said not, not Trump,

00:08:54.880 not this guy. Here we are all these years later. I see him so differently. Yes, he's got character

00:09:58.380 moment he, he, he got feeling and could play off of it. And this is just the, the, the very pinnacle

00:10:10.520 opened with on the rhetoric, who knows who the shooter was. And, but, but if you literally think

00:10:15.900 he's Hitler, that's what they're telling us, right? The president United States incumbent

00:10:19.920 is telling us that, and maybe in not so many words, what's the proper reaction? Just voting

00:10:25.480 against them and hoping things turn out right. If you take it seriously, I think we've learned

00:10:30.140 a lot of Democrats actually don't take it seriously, but unfortunately a lot of people do. If you

00:10:33.960 take it seriously, what do you do? If it's existential for American democracy, for our system of government,

00:10:39.940 our way of life, what do you do? Maybe you do whoever that, that, uh, apparent shooter on the

00:10:46.340 rooftop, maybe you do what he did. There is, um, video. I don't know if we have it or can show it

00:10:54.260 of a shooter. Forgive me. We don't know that this is the shooter of what appears to be a man

00:11:00.400 lying on a rooftop nearby. And the reports are online are that that's the shooter and he's dead.

00:11:06.100 He's motionless and he's lying down. Um, we're going to, we, I've spoken with somebody who was

00:11:13.200 at the rally and we're going to have him call in talking about the security, but it was tight

00:11:17.840 as it would be for any secret service event with the former president, nevermind the leading contender

00:11:23.140 for the GOP nomination, which of course takes place next week as a formal matter. And so this

00:11:30.080 person in order to have a gun rich, you know, anywhere near shooting range of this president,

00:11:35.900 I mean, it does make you wonder how he did it, whether he had help, how on earth anybody was

00:11:42.760 within shooting range of the, this man, Donald Trump from a rooftop, all of that is going to be

00:11:48.600 investigated. Uh, but you've got to say kudos to local law enforcement or the secret service,

00:11:54.800 whoever took this guy out because it all happened in seconds. Yeah. So the, you know, all the

00:12:00.900 professionals say, and it just seems as though just watching as an amateur, their reaction to this

00:12:05.260 was pitch perfect. I mean, they, they immediately go on Trump. They're protecting him with their

00:12:09.680 bodies, which apparently moving act, uh, putting themselves on the line, but, but there are going

00:12:15.340 to be questions that, you know, according to Twitter, who knows things are going to change.

00:12:19.620 We're going to learn more, you know, as, as we speak, you know, just during, during this segment,

00:12:24.300 probably we're, we're learning more, but, um, how is it there, there are indications that people are

00:12:29.760 pointing to this guy on the rooftop and he got the shots off before the secret service got him.

00:12:34.580 Maybe it was unavoidable, who knows, but there are going to be a lot of questions. So it looks like

00:12:39.160 the reaction was a secret service success, but I think there'd be questions about how this guy was

00:12:43.720 able to get within range. And initially it seemed like there's some speculation. Maybe it's a BB

00:12:47.960 because it's, you know, when you get shot in your ear, you just, it's not just a little blood,

00:12:53.640 right? It's a horrible event. And it seems as though no one else was hurt. But now, of course,

00:12:58.180 we got in the reports of other people in the crowd, tragically hurt. We've seen that video

00:13:02.980 of the, uh, the Trump supporter who was there and his emergency room doctor, I believe was trying to

00:13:08.380 save someone with a grievous head wound and didn't. So, so this was a furious, a fascination

00:13:14.700 attempt. And if, if anyone comes this close to, to being killed, that's under secret service

00:13:21.260 protections, there are going to be a lot of critical questions afterwards. Uh, we have that

00:13:26.340 video again. This is of, uh, an ER doctor who was on the scene. Let's take a listen.

00:13:31.280 That's exactly where I heard him come from. What did you see, sir? Um, I heard the shots. Um, I,

00:13:38.080 um, I thought it was firecrackers to begin with. Um, somebody over there was screaming,

00:13:42.620 he's been shot, he's been shot. So I made my way over. Uh, I said, I'm an emergency department

00:13:48.160 physician. Let me help you. The guy had spun around, was jammed between the benches. He

00:13:54.260 had a headshot here. There was lots of blood and he had brain matter. So I got him, there's

00:14:02.920 a helicopter coming in to get him. Uh, so, uh, I got people there really helpful. I got

00:14:09.340 one. Well, that's horrible. I mean, that is horrifying, rich. And you in, I mean, we don't

00:14:24.960 know it, we don't have the angle straight, but clearly, as you point out within a, within

00:14:29.060 a couple of centimeters that could have been president Trump and God prayers go out to

00:14:35.180 the family of the, of the Trump supporter. That's how it appears, uh, who was shot and

00:14:39.580 killed just there to support a president in advance of an election, not, not to have his

00:14:44.540 brain matter spilled out all over the ground. What is this country coming to rich?

00:14:51.580 Yeah. Talk about, uh, an offense against American democracy to attend what's become a kind of a

00:14:57.220 civic ritual for half the country. These Trump rallies, which are so epic and iconic and be

00:15:03.340 killed is just, it's beyond words. It's just horrific and profoundly wrong. And again, we're

00:15:11.260 just, we're tremendously lucky that, that Trump himself wasn't killed and it's, it'd be a human

00:15:17.200 tragedy, a family tragedy just for him and the people around him. But it would just be an unbelievably

00:15:23.660 awful thing for the country because these assassinations, they are deranging events and our

00:15:29.660 politics is deranged already. It would get much, much worse. I mean, we still, we're still arguing

00:15:34.940 over who killed JFK, right? You know, 50 or 60 years later. So this is why it's extremely important

00:15:41.820 to make sure this never, ever happens. And whatever these security arrangements were going into this,

00:15:47.900 obviously they, they need to be heightened, but Trump, you know, there was a big thing on the January

00:15:52.140 6th commission. Oh, we didn't want the people to be magged or to go through electric detectors on

00:15:58.140 January 6th. It's because he's always, he wants to be out there. He wants the crowd to be big and

00:16:03.260 to have a good time and not have to wait forever. And he trusts them, right? The reason, when this is

00:16:08.780 a big scandal that Trump supposedly want people to bring weapons in proximity to the Capitol,

00:16:13.180 someone was telling me, he always joked with the Secret Service about, these are my people,

00:16:16.460 just let them in. It'll be fine. But anyone who's out there and any crowd like that,

00:16:20.620 that no matter how secret, how much Secret Service protection is, you are ultimately putting your

00:16:24.940 body on, on the line. And we saw this dramatic evidence of that this afternoon.

00:16:39.260 Uh, his name is Larry Wood. And he said that, uh, there were tens of thousands there by his estimation

00:16:45.420 that he heard a single gunshot. Uh, he and his wife were seated farther back.

00:16:51.020 Then another, then a pause. And then the rapid fire that there were state police everywhere.

00:16:56.300 And I asked him about the security and he said it was tight and that they were forced to go

00:17:02.220 through a magnetometer. And even they, as an older couple, uh, were not allowed to bring in,

00:17:07.660 his wife had a long umbrella and she couldn't bring it in. Right. So they understand it always

00:17:13.340 amps up when the former president is there. And it amps up even more as he inches closer and closer

00:17:18.780 to becoming the nominee again. So they wouldn't let her in with the long umbrella. So they had to

00:17:25.260 be seated farther back. And then they saw what we saw, which was he appeared to get hit, um, from

00:17:32.060 on the right side, from a shooter who was off, off to the right. And then the crowd went, went nuts.

00:17:39.020 I mean, people started to realize it, you know, he started to realize he said, first, he thought it

00:17:42.380 was maybe fireworks. He wasn't sure. And then they, they realized it was gunshots and that they needed

00:17:48.380 to get out of there. And you think about, you know, it's not just Donald Trump. It's not just this poor

00:17:53.740 Trump supporter who appears to have been murdered today. Forget the shooter. It's, it is the old,

00:18:01.500 it is men and women who are just out there to support their country, their preferred candidate

00:18:06.220 to show their love of the stars and stripes days after July 4th. And what they think it stands for

00:18:11.520 by potentially voting for this man. And they get scared to with an inch, an inch of their lives

00:18:16.380 running for their safety because they showed up at a Trump rally. That's what, that's what they did

00:18:21.540 today. That's what Larry and his wife did today to show up at a Trump rally in Pennsylvania,

00:19:04.400 talking about the debate. It's time to put Trump in a bullseye. The left, I mean, the headlines in the

00:19:11.960 New York times rich when Sarah Palin had what looked like a gun site on certain districts prior

00:19:19.560 to Gabby Giffords being shot led to litigation that went on for years about whether she had been

00:19:26.640 the subject of what she called the blood libel. And now you've got the sitting president who's been

00:19:32.200 so loose with his language. He called Kyle Rittenhouse, a white supremacist, despite the fact

00:19:37.180 that there was zero evidence for that. And none of it was, it was born out in that trial.

00:19:41.320 And he said, it's time to put Trump in a bullseye days ago. It's just totally irresponsible.

00:19:51.520 Yeah. So if the Sarah Palin standard applies, and of course it never does. It only applies to people

00:19:56.240 on, on the right. President Biden would be blamed for this. Uh, so many other people on the left would

00:20:01.080 be blamed for this, but they, they shouldn't call Trump a Nazi because one is untrue. And two, it does

00:20:06.660 work people up in a way that's extremely unhealthy and potentially dangerous. So they, they should

00:20:12.900 stop it, but they, they never will because it's so, so useful to them and makes them feel, feel good.

00:21:18.960 this moment to recommit ourselves to civility and respect in our politics. Heal your own party,

00:21:54.160 to the secret service for getting him to safety. There's no place for this kind of violence in

00:22:05.500 that a Joe Biden campaign official tells CBS news. The Biden campaign is now pausing all outbound

00:22:11.800 communications working to pull down their television ads as quickly as possible. Of course, um, they

00:22:20.520 would have to enrich that would be standard in an event like this. Yeah. That statement's fine. It's

00:22:26.600 not particularly eloquent or moving, but it's fine. You know, it's what you'd say kind of replacement

00:22:32.240 level statement about this kind of event. But I kind of, can I come back, Megan, to the reaction of the

00:22:36.480 crowd? Cause I thought that was very telling. And you noted how they started chanting USA. I think

00:22:40.820 there are three things notable. One, a lot of these people in the front, they, they were standing

00:22:45.160 up too. They, they, they were not going to be cowed, right? Then they chant USA, this patriotic

00:22:50.740 reaction. And then, and one of the videos you've seen over and over again from, from the front as

00:22:55.240 Trump's being led down the steps, you see as he's, he's going towards the beast. There are a couple

00:23:00.100 guys and they give the finger to, I think, you know, back towards the media or just in general.

00:23:06.000 So I think that's also very telling. That's, that's the level of, that's the natural

00:23:10.680 reaction of defiance that a lot of Trump supporters are going to feel. Right. And if there is any doubt

00:23:17.220 about the enthusiasm for Trump, there's none now, there's none now.

00:24:27.420 And the number one thing I was hearing was Trump just won the presidency. Like they're the,

00:24:34.740 the Donald Trump voters, there's nothing that will keep them away on election day. I don't,

00:24:46.980 matter. Nothing matters. They will, they will be there. This will activate the establishment wing

00:24:53.280 of the Republican party. This will activate right leaning independence. It will be a message. It

00:24:59.620 will be the middle finger that we saw at that rally to anybody who would behave like this. And,

00:25:06.300 and the people who behave so irresponsibly in creating the messaging about him, comparing him to

00:25:13.620 mass murderers over and over and over. What do you think? Yeah. Yeah. Well, there'll be a bump

00:25:21.380 based on sympathy and then I'll, then I'll go into the convention, maybe be indistinguishable from a

00:25:26.760 bumpy gets at the convention, but the convention itself, we like there'll be moments we've never

00:25:31.720 seen before. Right. No one has walked onto a convention stage having within days, having been the

00:25:38.120 subject to the target of a serious assassination attempt. I mean, the roof will blow off the place.

01:06:28.640 And already, I think the sense is that the Secret Service was slow, certainly, and perhaps

01:06:36.160 missed one of the most obvious overlook points for there to be this kind of a shooting.

01:06:41.300 Now, I'm basing, I wasn't at the rally, obviously, and I have to base this off of what's being

01:06:46.920 shared, not just in terms of the videos alone, which are obviously very instructive, because

01:06:51.440 there's so many videos from different angles as to what went on here.

01:06:54.320 But also, it seems that the shooter on the rooftop was able to get up there.

01:07:02.820 There have been eyewitnesses talking about how they even tried to flag this to Secret Service.

02:36:09.460 to crush your opponents. Truth is an irrelevance. Indeed, no, I'm better. Truth is an obstacle.
