00:07:05.320 You randomly kidnapping folk and you throwing them out of the country

00:07:35.580 Y'all know we got Governor Hot Wheels down there.

00:08:19.000 And allegedly, it has me as topping the field for the Senate.
00:08:25.020 Listen, I have been so busy in the House, because that's where I am.
00:08:29.240 That's been my focus.

00:08:41.340 It's going to take a lot to flip this state.

00:08:58.500 It means traversing a very, very, very large state.
00:09:02.580 It means connecting and meeting people where they are in a very short amount of time.

00:10:51.140 What's the last time you were to make a gut decision?
00:10:53.420 This here is very prescribed.
00:10:55.120 It's very controlled.
00:10:55.980 Yeah.
00:10:57.080 Probably the biggest gut decision I've made most recently is to choose my running mate.
00:11:03.240 Yeah.
00:11:03.480 There were lots of good, incredible candidates.
00:11:07.540 And ultimately, that came down to a gut decision.
00:11:11.640 Journalists Josh Dossie, Tyler Pager, and Isaac Arnsdorf revealing the details behind that ill-fated gut decision in their new book,
00:11:20.200 2024, How Trump Retook the White House and Democrats Lost America.
00:11:24.520 The final three candidates reportedly Governor Walls, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro,
00:11:29.800 and U.S. Senator from Arizona and former astronaut Mark Kelly.
00:11:33.320 The Harris campaign prioritizing appeal to rural voters in the decision,
00:11:37.720 inviting the final three candidates to Vice President Harris's residence for final interviews.
00:11:42.560 According to the book, when asked what they would like to drink,

00:11:49.300 Governor Walls requesting Diet Mountain Dew.

00:11:54.480 This was reportedly a deciding factor in who should be a heartbeat away from the presidency.
00:11:59.940 This was her gut telling her he was the one.
00:12:03.860 My God.
00:12:05.080 As Governor Shapiro reportedly pushed VP Harris on what his role was going to look like,
00:12:10.020 Governor Walls reportedly offering up reasons why he should not be selected.
00:12:14.180 From the book, quote,
00:12:15.340 In his interview that Friday, he said he had never used a teleprompter before.
00:12:19.100 On Sunday, he told Harris,
00:12:21.160 I would understand if you went with somebody else because
00:12:23.380 I'm really nervous about the debate and I don't think I'll do well.
00:12:27.080 Why didn't she listen?
00:12:28.620 Still, the vetting team did not fully appreciate his tendency to
00:12:31.860 misspeak, write the authors,
00:12:34.560 his folksiness sometimes tipping into factual imprecision.
00:12:39.320 Factual imprecision?
00:12:40.800 You mean his lies about his alleged time in combat where he never was or that time he was
00:12:47.000 allegedly in China for the Tiananmen Square massacre?
00:12:50.560 No, that wasn't true either.
00:12:52.980 Governor Walls ultimately offering up a dismal debate performance against then-Senator J.D.
00:12:57.720 Vance looking like a deer in the headlights, stumbling on policy and delivering this bizarre
00:13:02.420 line.
00:13:03.260 Governor, you previously opposed an assault weapons ban, but it's only later in your political
00:13:07.500 career.
00:13:08.180 Did you change your position?
00:13:09.420 Why?
00:13:09.880 Yeah, I sat in that office with those Sandy Hook parents.
00:13:11.880 I've become friends with school shooters.
00:13:13.560 I've seen it.
00:13:14.160 Look, the NRA, I was an NRA guy for a long time.
00:13:16.480 They used to teach gun safety.
00:13:18.220 I'm of an age where my shotgun was in my car so I could pheasant hunt after football practice.
00:13:22.820 That's not where we live today.
00:13:24.760 Now, you can't say he didn't warn her.
00:13:27.080 And his gaffes kept coming.
00:13:29.000 Think about this.
00:13:29.840 When I was a kid growing up in Nebraska, being gay was illegal.
00:13:34.260 Still technically illegal.
00:13:35.600 Look, we get to turn the page on that, and I plan on waking up on November 6th with Madam
00:13:40.940 President.
00:13:41.580 I've tried to do the best I can, but I've not been perfect, and I'm a knucklehead at
00:13:45.740 times.
00:13:46.720 Governor Walls also spending much of the short-lived campaign defending his many past controversies
00:13:52.440 rather than advancing her arguments.
00:13:54.540 The Kamala Harris-Tim Walls ticket ultimately losing every single battleground state and
00:13:59.880 the presidency, despite nearly $2 billion in total spending and gushing coverage by everyone
00:14:05.860 in the establishment media.
00:14:09.400 And that'll do it for your AM Update.
