00:00:00.000 Good morning, everyone. I'm Megan Kelly. It's Monday, March 23rd, 2026, and this is your AM
00:00:08.500 Update. I think you're going to see more TSA agents. They're going to quit or they're not
00:00:12.660 going to show up. With the fight over DHS funding dragging on, TSA agents miss paychecks and call
00:00:18.800 out of work as the White House prepares to send in ICE to assist at overwhelmed airports. An
00:00:24.920 illegal immigrant from Venezuela now in custody after allegedly gunning down a young college
00:00:30.760 student in Chicago. The president will take whatever steps it takes to achieve those goals.
00:00:36.000 A new escalation threat from President Trump against Iran amid a deadline tonight,
00:00:40.660 as new polling shows Americans growing increasingly uneasy about the war. And the search for Nancy
00:00:46.520 Guthrie stretches into its seventh week as the Guthrie family delivers a pleading new public
00:00:52.220 message. All that and more coming up in just a moment on your AM update.
00:01:00.240 Are you numb to it yet? This wild ride of life we've lived lately? AI coming for our jobs,
00:01:06.000 geopolitical changes, reshaping alliances, and the market bouncing around like a yo-yo.
00:01:10.980 It's no wonder so many are hunkering down, saving more, looking for smart ways to protect their
00:01:15.660 families and our futures. One thing people overlook? Life insurance. And here's the part
00:01:20.620 most people don't realize. It's often a lot more affordable than you think. In fact, the younger
00:01:25.240 and healthier you are, the lower your rate. Wait 10 years and you could be paying double. That's
00:01:30.080 why I want to tell you about SelectQuote. They take the guesswork out of finding the right policy.

00:01:58.380 slash Megan today to get started. Amid a continued impasse on Capitol Hill over DHS funding,
00:02:07.200 a partial shutdown now dramatically impacting airports across the country. TSA agents are
00:02:13.460 currently not being paid, leading some to call out sick to take other jobs, others outright
00:02:18.800 quitting. The result? Chaos at airports during a busy spring break, with several major airports
00:02:24.800 facing hours-long security lines. Funding for the department lapsing in mid-February thanks to
00:02:30.800 Democrats demanding reforms to ICE and Border Patrol before they will agree to a full funding
00:02:36.300 package. Ironically, ICE and other immigration enforcement is still being funded thanks to the
00:02:42.220 big, beautiful bill signed by President Trump last summer. But DHS as a whole is not, including
00:02:48.200 other divisions like the TSA. Democrats pushing to finance some DHS departments like TSA and
00:02:54.420 the Coast Guard until an agreement can be reached on ICE and CBP reforms. Republicans so far
00:03:00.240 insisting on full funding for the entire department, triggering another failed Senate
00:03:05.300 vote last week. Sixty votes are required to advance the legislation requiring at least
00:03:10.080 some Democrat support. Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, so far the only Dem to cross
00:03:15.540 party lines and vote to fund DHS. President Trump on Saturday floating a unique potential solution,
00:03:22.200 posting to Truth Social, quote, if the radical left Democrats don't immediately sign an agreement
00:03:26.900 to let our country, in particular our airports, be free and safe again, I will move our brilliant
00:03:32.880 and patriotic ICE agents to the airports where they will do security like no one has ever seen
00:03:38.580 before. Borders are Tom Homan yesterday on CNN confirming plans are underway. Are ICE agents
00:03:45.540 even remotely trained to handle security at airports? ICE agents receive a high level of
00:03:51.940 training. And, you know, ICE agents are assigned at many airports across the country already. They
00:03:57.520 do a lot of investigation, criminal investigation on smuggling at airports. But, you know,
00:04:02.440 You know, there's, I mean, you've got TSA agents covering exits, you know, certainly a highly trained ICE law enforcement officer can cover an exit, makes people don't go through those exits.
00:04:13.360 Stuff like that relieves that TSA officer to go to screening and to reduce those lines.
00:04:19.900 So wherever we can provide extra security, I don't see an ICE agent looking at an x-ray machine because we're not trained in that.
00:04:27.260 There are certain parts of security that TSA is doing that we can move them off those jobs and put them in the specialized jobs to help move those lines.
00:04:35.560 Travelers facing mounting delays at airports across the country here reporting from Atlanta News First, Fox 26 in Houston and PIX11 in New York City.
00:04:45.140 This is another morning of very long lines for travelers trying to get through security at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
00:04:51.260 airport. Yesterday, at this exact same time, the security checkpoint was snaking through baggage
00:04:57.580 claim four. Right now, it is all the way through baggage claim nine from one side of the airport
00:05:04.520 to the other. Your TSA wait lines at Terminal E at Bush Airport still say over three hours this
00:05:10.660 morning. Here at La Guardia, we saw the line stretching through the parking lot just yesterday.
00:05:14.820 Right now, about 50,000 TSA agents are still working without their paychecks.
00:05:20.960 Democrats criticizing the move.
00:05:22.880 House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries yesterday on CNN.
00:05:26.300 The last thing that the American people need are for untrained ICE agents to be deployed at airports all across the country,
00:05:33.520 potentially to brutalize or in some instances kill them.
00:05:37.020 We've already seen how ICE conducts itself.
00:05:39.840 These are untrained individuals when it comes to doing the current job that they have.
00:05:44.820 for the most part, let alone deploying them in close exposure in highly sensitive situations
00:05:51.500 at airports across the country. Back on the Hill, Homan, this past Friday,
00:05:56.020 meeting with lawmakers, discussing the nature of those talks yesterday on CNN.
00:06:01.120 I'm invited there just to explain operations and how we conduct business within ICE and CBP.
00:06:07.340 I mean, we have the same policies in place we had during Obama and Biden and Clinton and Bush one
00:06:14.380 and Bush, too. So the policies really hasn't changed. It's the execution of those policies
00:06:19.640 that we're talking about. We certainly can't surrender ISIS authorities and their
00:06:26.980 congressionally mandated jobs. So we're having no discussions. Well, but as you know, they want it
00:06:32.000 to be codified, things like agents wearing masks, the ability or the requirement to say who they are
00:06:41.740 and things of that nature.
00:06:44.100 So you're saying that the White House is not open to changing any of that?
00:06:48.320 No, no.
00:06:49.520 I'm saying the majority of it is about policy issues.
00:06:51.920 We're talking about identification, badge number, name, either or,
00:06:57.380 because no board has a name on their uniform.
00:07:00.040 It doesn't have a name on uniforms.
00:07:01.440 We're talking about clear identification.
00:07:03.440 We're talking about access to detention and things like that.
00:07:08.800 Meanwhile, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warning yesterday on ABC the situation could get much worse.
00:07:15.420 So I think as we look forward to Friday, that's when the next paycheck should come.
00:07:19.180 And if this Homeland Security funding isn't resolved, I think you're going to see more TSA agents.
00:07:25.500 They're going to quit or they're not going to show up.
00:07:27.620 It's hard for these individuals already to make their ends meet.
00:07:30.520 But with out getting paychecks, it's even that much more challenging.
00:07:33.620 And so they're going to take other jobs to put food on the table and pay the rent.
00:07:37.320 so I do think it's going to get much worse. More than 400 agents so far quitting since
00:07:42.440 the shutdown began. Elon Musk on Saturday posting to X, quote, I would like to offer to pay the
00:07:48.300 salaries of TSA personnel during this funding impasse that is negatively affecting the lives
00:07:53.660 of so many Americans at airports throughout the country. It is unclear if the White House
00:07:58.660 has responded to the extraordinary offer. A 25-year-old man identified by Fox News as an
00:08:06.440 illegal immigrant from Venezuela, arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of 18-year-old
00:08:12.140 Sheridan Gorman in Chicago. Gorman, a first-year student from New York, walking with friends near
00:08:18.380 Loyola Beach around 1 a.m. Thursday, that's about eight miles north of the famous Oak Street Beach
00:08:24.780 near Chicago's Michigan Mile, in a much quieter, more residential area, when a masked gunman
00:08:30.840 approached the group, firing a single shot, striking her in the back for no apparent reason.
00:08:37.480 Gorman, a first-year business student at Loyola University, Chicago, pronounced dead at the scene.
00:08:43.320 Her family releasing a statement calling her the heart of the family, writing in part, quote,
00:08:47.780 what happened to Sheridan cannot be reduced to the idea of someone being in the wrong place at
00:08:52.420 the wrong time. This is not an abstraction. This is the loss of a daughter, the loss of a sister.
00:08:58.260 The family urging anyone with information to come forward.
00:09:01.480 Fellow classmates of Gorman's speaking out to ABC7.
00:09:05.060 She was really sweet.
00:09:06.720 And it just makes me really sad because with everything that's going on,
00:09:11.160 it does make you wonder, like, how safe can you be at night?
00:09:14.600 She had a lot of friends. She was always smiling.
00:09:16.900 It just reflects a lot about that person specifically.
00:09:19.140 So knowing that, it's just horrible.
00:09:21.720 You come here for an education.
00:09:24.520 Gun violence should not be something that you should be worried about
00:09:27.140 or if you should not be worried about walking to the beach and not expect to just get killed like
00:09:33.860 that. DHS identifying the suspect as Jose Medina Medina. Fox News reporting he was caught and
00:09:40.580 released at the border in May of 2023 under the Biden administration. Police arresting Medina
00:09:47.020 Friday night while executing a search warrant at an apartment just blocks away from the beach,
00:09:51.580 according to CWB Chicago. Investigators reportedly recovering a firearm inside the apartment now
00:09:58.180 undergoing ballistics testing to determine whether it was used in the shooting. According to the
00:10:03.320 Chicago Tribune surveillance footage tracking Medina from the scene to the building, police
00:10:08.340 identifying him in part due to what they describe as a distinct limp. DHS revealing he was arrested
00:10:14.440 just one month after entering this country illegally for alleged shoplifting and released
00:10:20.420 on his own recognizance. He later failed to appear in court, leading to an arrest warrant,
00:10:25.780 but was never rearrested. Did they even try? DHS yesterday lodging a detainer request for Medina,
00:10:33.240 requesting that Chicago officials not release him. The Sanctuary City bars cooperation with
00:10:38.800 federal immigration enforcement, specifically barring officials from honoring ICE detainers
00:10:43.420 without a court order. As of now, authorities have not confirmed any motive here, and the
00:10:49.180 investigation remains ongoing. Coming up, President Trump threatening a major escalation in Iran
00:10:57.060 and the search for Nancy Guthrie now entering its seventh week as the Guthrie family speaks out in a
00:11:03.140 new statement. Relief Factor loves hearing from pain-free customers and hopes they can help you
00:11:15.660 next. One user of Relief Factor named Kim wrote to them to say, quote, before trying Relief Factor,
00:11:20.960 I struggled just to make it through my work days. I'd collapse on the couch at night, aching
00:11:25.040 everywhere. Within a few weeks of starting Relief Factor, the daily pain began to fade.
00:11:29.960 Now I'm keeping up at work and I still have energy left from my family. There are many stories just

00:12:12.120 getting out of pain. As Operation Epic Fury enters its fourth week, President Trump over
00:12:19.420 the weekend saying the U.S. is, quote, very close to meeting its objectives, including degrading
00:12:24.880 Iran's missile capabilities, destroying its defense industrial base, eliminating its Navy
00:12:30.240 and Air Force, preventing any path to a nuclear weapon and protecting key U.S. allies in the
00:12:36.040 region. The following day, however, President Trump issuing a stark ultimatum on Truth Social,
00:12:41.960 warning that if Iran does not fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours,
00:12:46.640 the U.S. will, quote, hit and obliterate their various power plants, starting with the biggest
00:12:51.880 one first. That deadline's set to expire at 7.44 p.m. tonight. The threat marking a notable shift,
00:12:59.860 the president previously emphasizing that the U.S. was avoiding strikes on civilian
00:13:04.140 infrastructure like power plants and oil facilities. Treasury Secretary Scott Besson
00:13:09.280 yesterday on NBC pressed on the apparent change in strategy. This seems to be an escalation,
00:13:16.020 a threat of escalation, and it seems to run counter to his statement that he in fact wants
00:13:21.920 to wind down the war. Again, Kristen, the president's been very clear from the beginning
00:13:26.020 that the goals are destroy the Iranian Air Force and the Navy to completely demolish their missile
00:13:34.520 capabilities, demolish their ability to replenish those capabilities, make sure the Iranians can not
00:13:40.880 have a nuclear weapon, and stop their ability to project power internationally. And the president
00:13:46.840 will take whatever steps it takes to achieve those goals. Secretary Besant asked whether the
00:13:51.960 administration would consider boots on the ground to seize Karg Island, the hub for roughly 90% of
00:13:58.640 Iran's oil exports, which the U.S. has already attacked and which President Trump says he will
00:14:04.100 hit harder if Iran continues to block shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Secretary Besant responding
00:14:10.300 on ground troops that, quote, all options are on the table. Iran responding with threats of its own.
00:14:16.780 A spokesman for Iran's Supreme Military Command headquarters warning, quote,
00:14:20.500 if Iran's fuel and energy infrastructure is attacked, then fuel, energy, information technology
00:14:26.320 systems, and desalination infrastructure used by America and the regime in the region will be
00:14:32.580 struck. Desalination facilities are essential in the Middle East. Al Jazeera reporting the
00:14:38.280 six Gulf states, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, among the most water
00:14:44.600 scarce countries in the world, relying heavily on desalination to meet the needs of their people.
00:14:50.480 About 80 percent of Israel's drinking water coming through five desalination plants along
00:14:55.520 the Mediterranean, according to Ben-Gurion University. In Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, and Abu
00:15:01.140 Dhabi, some 90 percent of the drinking water depends on desalination plants.
00:15:06.620 Iran continues to drop missiles in the fight. On Saturday, a pair of Iranian ballistic missiles
00:15:11.880 striking southern Israel, injuring at least 115 people. The Israeli Defense Force reportedly
00:15:17.600 investigating how the Iron Dome failed to intercept them. Meantime, Iran reportedly firing
00:15:23.300 two intermediate-range ballistic missiles at Diego Garcia, an island located 2,500 miles away,
00:15:30.580 housing a joint U.S.-U.K. military base. One missile reportedly failing mid-flight,
00:15:36.340 another targeted by a U.S. interceptor, though officials say it's unclear if our interceptor
00:15:41.840 was successful, according to the Wall Street Journal. The attempted strike, suggesting Iran's
00:15:46.980 missile range may extend far beyond what it has publicly acknowledged, potentially expanding the
00:15:52.360 threat well outside of the Middle East, possibly potentially putting European targets within the
00:15:57.800 Iranian regime's range. With neither missile hitting the base, however, it's unclear if they
00:16:02.500 were capable of reaching their intended target. Al Jazeera reports that the Iranians deny that Iran
00:16:09.280 was behind this particular launch. Here at home, the national gas average rising to 394 per gallon,
00:16:15.980 according to AAA, up from $2.93 one month ago. Diesel is averaging just over $5 a gallon.
00:16:23.900 One month ago, it was between $3.65 and $3.81. And new polling from CBS showing growing pessimism
00:16:32.600 about the economy. 32% of Americans now expect a recession within the next year. That's up from
00:16:38.680 26% before the start of Operation Epic Fury. In terms of the war, 57% say the conflict is going
00:16:45.660 very or somewhat badly. 43% say it's going well, as confidence in the administration's messaging
00:16:51.820 appears to be slipping. 68% now say the administration has not clearly explained
00:16:57.060 its goals. That's up from 62% earlier this month. Overall, approval of the conflict also slipping.
00:17:03.900 On March 4th, 44% supporting military action against Iran, that number now down to 40.
00:17:10.620 66% of respondents agree this is a war of choice.
00:17:13.800 34% say it's a war of necessity.
00:17:17.080 Breaking down approval by party, 84% of Republicans approve of the war, 16% disapprove, 8% of Dems
00:17:24.640 in favor, 92% oppose.
00:17:27.580 Just 31% of independents support the war compared to 69% who oppose it.
00:17:33.820 The search for missing 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, mother of Today Show host Savannah
00:17:40.220 Guthrie, now entering its seventh week, with investigators still without a suspect or clear
00:17:46.060 answers. NewsNation correspondent Brian Enten, who has been closely following the investigation,
00:17:51.640 reporting the FBI is intensifying its focus inside Guthrie's Tucson, Arizona neighborhood,
00:17:57.420 including on one home, which was vacant at the time of her disappearance.
00:18:01.800 Hear from Brian Enten Investigates last week.
00:18:04.460 I have confirmed through sources that the FBI has been back in Nancy Guthrie's neighborhood
00:18:10.960 over the last 24 hours or so, going back to neighbors' houses and asking more questions.
00:18:17.760 Some of the things that I know that they're talking about is there's one neighbor that
00:18:22.800 moved out before Nancy disappeared, and they have been asking more questions about that
00:18:29.040 situation. Not to say that that has anything to do with what happened, but that is something that
00:18:33.680 the FBI agents are asking about. And then also, and this I found to be particularly interesting,
00:18:40.600 they are asking about, there are several houses that are under construction in the neighborhood,
00:18:45.100 and they are asking specifically for names of contractors and workers who were working
00:18:53.700 in the neighborhood on those houses, on those construction projects. And I'm talking about
00:18:59.760 like specifics, like they want the names of all the contractors and workers who are working on
00:19:04.580 those houses. Retired Pima County SWAT commander Bob Krieger telling Parade Magazine that vacant
00:19:10.740 houses can serve as staging locations for bad actors needing to scout an area, allowing them
00:19:16.480 to blend into neighborhoods. In a separate report, Pima County homicide detective Kurt Dabb telling
00:19:22.440 Parade magazine, he believes there may be as many as four accomplices in this case,
00:19:27.940 aiding the masked figure captured on security footage outside of Guthrie's door on the night
00:19:32.560 of the abduction. Meanwhile, the Guthrie family issuing a renewed plea to the community Saturday
00:19:37.900 night as part of a Bring Her Home special airing on local station KVOA. The statement reading in
00:19:44.680 part, quote, someone knows something. It's possible a member of this community has information
00:19:50.160 that they do not even realize is significant. We hope people search their memories, especially
00:19:55.200 around the key timelines of January 31st and the early morning hours of February 1st,
00:20:00.200 as well as the late evening of January 11th. January 11th being a possible date of one of
00:20:06.800 those images of the perpetrator on Nancy Guthrie's porch, and also a date on which
00:20:12.580 neighbors spotted a mysterious white van in the neighborhood. The statement urging community
00:20:17.900 members to check everything from camera footage to journal entries and text messages. From the
00:20:23.020 statement, quote, no detail is too small. Yesterday, Savannah sharing an image on Instagram featuring
00:20:29.120 Jesus with two angels and the caption, quote, I believe, I believe. And that'll do it for your
00:20:38.400 AM update. I'm Megan Kelly. Join me back here for the MK show live on Sirius XM's The Megan
00:20:43.060 Kelly channel, 111 at noon east on youtube.com slash Megan Kelly and on all podcast platforms.

00:21:03.300 break from AM update. We were well served by all of the great men and women who pitched in. Thank you.
00:21:13.060 Thank you.
