00:02:50.220 The subpoenas do not indicate a specific statute.
00:02:52.940 However, CBS News reporting,
00:02:54.880 quote,
00:02:55.040 The primary statute being used as the basis for the probe is 18 U.S.C. 372,
00:03:01.600 or conspiracy to impede or injure an officer,
00:03:05.060 the same one that was used against some of the rioters who stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021,
00:03:10.680 including members of the far-right Oath Keepers and Proud Boys.
00:03:15.900 Governor Walz and Mayor Fry reportedly making harsh, inflammatory public comments against the feds,

00:03:29.640 amid widespread accusations of fraud.
00:03:32.220 Tensions erupting further following the fatal shooting of trained agitator Renee Goode
00:03:38.360 by an ICE agent after she drove her car toward him.
00:03:42.680 CBS News reporting the subpoena requests eight categories of documents,

00:04:14.900 We've seen the chaos, and it's constant, and our men and women in law enforcement deserve to be safe,
00:04:20.860 and that's what we're going to do in Minnesota.
00:04:22.880 Governor Walz responding on social media, quote,
00:04:25.360 The state of Minnesota will not be drawn into political theater.
00:04:30.640 This Justice Department investigation, sparked by calls for accountability in the face of violence,
00:04:37.040 chaos, and the killing of Renee Goode, does not seek justice.
00:04:41.540 Mayor Fry, responding in a social media statement, quote,
00:04:44.600 When the federal government weaponizes its power to intimidate local leaders for doing their jobs,
00:04:51.120 every American should be concerned.
00:04:53.620 U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commander Greg Bovino,
00:04:57.120 at a Tuesday briefing, responding to claims that the surge is political in nature.
00:05:01.900 Leaders like Tim Walz or Mayor Fry have relied on heated rhetoric and accusations that distract from the facts.
00:05:11.420 The facts are that federal agents are arresting murderers, rapists, child predators,
00:05:19.640 cartel-connected criminals, and other individuals who pose a real danger to the people of Minneapolis.
00:05:25.660 What we do is legal, ethical, and moral.
00:05:27.600 Everything we do every day is legal, ethical, moral, well-grounded in law.
00:05:32.880 We will continue enforcing the law.
00:05:36.060 We will continue making arrests, and we will continue working to keep Minneapolis safe.
00:05:43.000 Mayor Fry's subpoena requesting him to appear before a grand jury on February 3rd.
00:05:48.180 It is unclear if the other subpoenas have similar requests.
00:05:52.200 Meanwhile, the DOJ is sending more prosecutors to Minnesota,
00:05:56.040 following a wave of recent departures that have strained federal case capacity, reports the Washington Post.
00:06:02.400 One of the investigations now drawing scrutiny reportedly centering on the anti-ICE agitators
00:06:08.520 who deliberately disrupted a Sunday church service at City's Church in St. Paul,
00:06:14.040 confronting a preacher mid-worship.
00:06:17.220 Here's a moment of the disruption as captured by formerly semi-famous TV host Don Lemon,
00:06:23.800 who accompanied the rioters.
00:06:25.680 I'm not part of the group. I'm just here photographing. I'm a journalist.
00:06:30.640 I'm not with—I'm just—
00:06:32.000 You're the same here.
00:06:35.640 Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem promising arrests are coming,
00:06:40.620 Tuesday on Newsmax.
00:06:42.540 That pastor really did a remarkable thing there, trying to protect his parishioners.
00:06:45.980 And even the parishioners, I imagine, have felt and feel intimidated.
00:06:50.100 They did, and there's going to be arrests.
00:06:51.940 In the next several hours, Greta, there will be arrests tied to that,
00:06:55.700 and people will be brought to justice for how they violated the law in that situation.
00:06:59.980 As of this moment, no arrests have been made,
00:07:02.340 but AM Update and The Megyn Kelly Show will stay on the story.
00:07:07.560 The House Judiciary Committee holding a hearing yesterday on fraud and theft of taxpayer dollars.
00:07:13.560 Among the witnesses, conservative influencer Nick Shirley,
00:07:18.320 who's reporting on Somali-run, taxpayer-funded businesses in Minnesota has drawn national attention,
00:07:25.300 racking up more than 140 million views on X alone.
00:07:30.380 Shirley, in December, publishing a 42-minute video showing visits to Somali-run daycares and healthcare companies,
00:07:38.320 he alleges are collecting millions in public funds each year without providing legitimate services.
00:07:45.400 Shirley discovering up to $110 million in potential fraud in a single day,
00:07:50.820 including at this daycare facility.
00:07:53.260 So this is Quality Leering Center.
00:07:56.560 I meant to say Quality Learning Center.
00:07:58.740 They spelt learning wrong.
00:08:00.600 That reporting triggering a multi-agency federal response,
00:08:04.600 including a freeze by HHS on childcare payments in Minnesota,
00:08:09.400 along with additional freezes from other agencies pending audits.
00:08:13.800 That's scrutiny taking center stage at yesterday's hearing.
00:08:17.320 Here, part of Shirley's opening statement.
00:08:20.240 We the people have had enough of our hard-earned money going towards fraudsters as if it's no big deal.
00:08:26.900 Governor Waltz has said he's been fighting fraud in Minnesota since 2019
00:08:30.560 and said the buck stops with him.
00:08:32.540 However, how long would it take for you to notice a million dollars leaving your bank account
00:08:38.740 and not knowing where it's going?
00:08:41.660 That's essentially what had been happening in Minnesota for years,
00:08:44.720 as billions of dollars has been misplaced.
00:08:47.680 And meanwhile, while people like Governor Tim Waltz called people like me
00:08:51.120 a white supremacist, delusional conspiracy theorist,
00:08:54.680 he actually decided to drop out of re-election 0.94
00:08:56.820 because, I believe, of how deep and extensive this fraud is.
00:09:01.500 One witness, Scott Dexter, a former police officer and fraud investigator,
00:09:07.120 testifying just how blatant the alleged fraud appeared on the ground.
00:09:10.620 In your investigation, sir, were they as, was the fraud as obvious as it seems to me
00:09:16.020 that it appeared in the videos and the other evidence that I've reviewed?
00:09:19.620 Yes.
00:09:20.040 As a matter of fact, when we would go out to do our investigations,
00:09:24.140 one of the things that we would have to do or I would have to do is we would scout out a location
00:09:29.620 for our surveillance cameras that allowed us a direct line of sight to the centers,
00:09:35.140 all their accesses.
00:09:36.120 A lot of that, because of the location where we were in these industrial, commercial areas,
00:09:41.740 meant we had to go to businesses and ask them permission.
00:09:45.140 And the number one comment they made was,
00:09:47.300 oh, you mean that daycare center over there where there's no children?
00:09:50.860 So everyone else around it saw it.
00:09:53.180 Democrats repeatedly shifting focus away from Minnesota,
00:09:57.040 arguing fraud happens everywhere rather than engaging directly
00:10:00.640 with the specific failures exposed in Minnesota.
00:10:03.740 Fraud is endemic in government all over the world.
00:10:08.380 Even our president has been convicted of 34 accounts of criminal fraud.
00:10:13.960 Just last week, Trump added quite a few fraudsters to his growing list of people that he has pardoned,
00:10:20.440 not because they are deserving a second chance, but because they hired his friends.
00:10:25.300 Congressman Kevin Kiley of California, a Republican,
00:10:28.800 agreeing that fraud in other states is worth investigating.
00:10:32.060 I have a particular interest in California, being from that state,
00:10:35.500 and we know that there's been a lot of fraud.
00:10:38.860 Yeah, and fraud in California might be worse than the fraud in Minnesota.
00:10:42.220 What makes you say that?
00:10:43.480 Well, $24 billion went missing for homelessness.
00:10:46.880 So $24 billion in homelessness, and yet the homeless population went up,
00:10:52.340 and a state audit found that they couldn't even figure out where the money went
00:10:56.080 or what the outcomes linked to that spending were.
00:10:58.740 Is that something that is kind of a red flag for you?
00:11:00.320 Yeah, it's a major red flag.
00:11:01.980 Well, unfortunately, our state legislators haven't managed to figure that out,
00:11:05.500 or at least the governor hasn't.
00:11:06.540 So what are you saying about him?
00:11:08.060 They're not smart.
00:11:09.200 No, but yeah, I mean, it's so obvious, and that's what we saw in Minnesota,
00:11:12.820 is how complicit the government has been in enabling this fraud to happen.
00:11:16.080 A former prosecutor in Minnesota saying the fraud could amount to as much as $9 billion.
00:11:21.380 Coming up, President Trump announces a deal between the U.S. and NATO on Greenland,
00:11:29.020 and the House Oversight Committee votes to hold Bill and Hillary Clinton in contempt of Congress.
00:11:34.280 Our sponsor, the Electronic Payments Coalition, says Washington politicians are always getting in your wallet,
00:11:45.640 and that now they're messing with your credit card.
00:11:47.960 They say your credit card and the security it offers are under attack,
00:11:51.000 and that Senators Dick Durbin and Roger Marshall want to change the nation's payment system
00:11:54.780 in a way that would benefit corporate megastores like Walmart and Target at the expense of everyday Americans.
00:12:00.560 Credit cards can keep your payments secure, and they can provide rewards that families use
00:12:06.420 to help make everyday purchases more affordable.
00:12:08.760 The Electronic Payments Coalition says the Durbin Marshall mandates would let corporate megastores
00:12:13.940 cut corners on credit card processing, routing transactions over cheaper, untested networks
00:12:19.000 with weaker security and fewer protections.
00:12:21.920 Find out more at guardyourcard.com and consider telling Congress to guard your card.
00:12:26.280 Hours after a highly anticipated speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos,
00:12:33.940 President Trump announcing that the U.S. and NATO allies have reached a framework for a future agreement on Greenland.
00:12:40.540 The announcement coming after a day of back-to-back meetings between Mr. Trump and other world leaders
00:12:45.780 as uncertainty over the future of the semi-autonomous territory and the NATO alliance hung in the balance.
00:12:53.040 Earlier in the day, President Trump moving to ease immediate tensions by explicitly ruling out the use of military force
00:13:00.720 to take Greenland from NATO-allied Denmark, though the broader campaign remained active
00:13:05.820 with the threat of additional tariffs looming.
00:13:09.080 Mr. Trump meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Britta, a longtime ally who has shown a greater willingness
00:13:15.120 than many European leaders to publicly back the President's hard-line negotiating tactics.
00:13:20.760 President Trump addressing reporters shortly after that meeting.
00:13:24.480 It's a deal that people jumped at.
00:13:28.360 Really fantastic for the USA.
00:13:31.180 Gets everything we wanted, including especially real national security and international security.
00:13:37.320 How so? Can you give us some details, please?
00:13:39.220 The deal is going to be put out pretty soon.
00:13:42.200 We'll see.
00:13:43.400 It's right now a little bit in progress, but pretty far along.
00:13:47.100 It gets us everything we needed to get.
00:13:49.000 Does it still include the United States having ownership of Greenland like you've said you wanted?
00:13:53.680 It's a long-term deal.
00:13:56.100 It's the ultimate long-term deal.
00:13:58.800 And I think it puts everybody in a really good position,
00:14:02.140 especially as it pertains to security and minerals and everything else.
00:14:06.020 How long would the deal be, Mr. President?
00:14:08.940 Infinite.
00:14:09.460 According to the New York Times, officials discussing a compromise allowing the U.S.
00:14:14.680 to take limited pockets of sovereignty to build military bases on Greenland.
00:14:19.680 President Trump, posting to Truth Social, quote,
00:14:22.400 Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st.
00:14:28.960 Additional discussions are being held concerning the Golden Dome as it pertains to Greenland.
00:14:34.260 The president going on to say Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio,
00:14:39.940 and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff will lead the negotiations.
00:14:44.320 Denmark's Foreign Minister Lars Luka Rasmussen, reacting on social media, quote,
00:14:49.460 The day is ending on a better note than it began.
00:14:52.340 We welcome that POTUS has ruled out taking Greenland by force and paused the trade war.
00:14:57.780 Now, let's sit down and find out how we can address the American security concerns in the Arctic
00:15:02.880 while respecting the red lines of the Kingdom of Denmark.
00:15:07.500 The stock market, nervous about the threat of additional tariffs, rallying on the news.
00:15:13.280 It's unclear when the full details of the framework will be made available.
00:15:17.000 The House Oversight Committee yesterday voting to hold former President Bill Clinton
00:15:22.940 and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in contempt of Congress for defying subpoenas
00:15:28.600 related to its probe into the Jeffrey Epstein investigation.
00:15:33.000 The vote to hold Mr. Clinton in contempt, passing 34 to 8, with two members voting present.
00:15:39.200 The vote on Mrs. Clinton passing 28 to 15, with one voting present.
00:15:43.920 Both measures passing with some bipartisan support.
00:15:48.140 The Clintons declining to appear for depositions last week,
00:15:51.760 following months of negotiations over the terms of their testimony.
00:15:56.000 Last week, the Clintons releasing a letter sent to the committee,
00:15:59.500 outlining their push to avoid testimony by submitting a sworn statement,
00:16:04.460 attesting that they do not have relevant knowledge to the investigation.
00:16:08.580 Here's committee chairman James Comer ahead of yesterday's vote.
00:16:11.980 The subpoenas are not mere suggestions.
00:16:15.260 They carry the force of law and require compliance.
00:16:18.820 We've offered flexibility on scheduling.
00:16:22.100 The response we received was not cooperation, but defiance,
00:16:26.480 marked by repeated delays, excuses, and obstruction.
00:16:31.120 The Clintons claim they have been treated unfairly because this committee accepted written statements
00:16:35.160 under penalty of perjury from former U.S. Attorneys General Holder, Lynch, Sessions, and Garland,
00:16:42.480 as well as former FBI Director Comey.
00:16:45.620 Those written statements were accepted because none of those officials recalled information relevant
00:16:51.120 to the Epstein investigation, nor did they have personal relationships with Epstein.
00:16:57.960 By contrast, the committee required in-person testimony from former U.S. Attorney General Barr
00:17:04.740 and former U.S. Secretary of Labor and U.S. Attorney Acosta, both Republicans,
00:17:11.800 because they possessed information directly relevant to the investigation.
00:17:16.160 Last Friday, Team Clinton making a final bid to the committee,
00:17:20.800 offering to meet in New York with the chairman and ranking member for an interview,
00:17:24.460 each accompanied by staff members allowed to take notes, which the committee rejected.
00:17:30.380 Under the law, contempt of Congress carries a maximum penalty of up to one year in prison
00:17:35.620 and a fine of up to $100,000.
00:17:39.000 The contempt citations now move to the House for a full vote before they can be referred to the DOJ
00:17:45.760 for possible prosecution.
00:17:48.080 It is not clear when the full vote will be held.
00:17:50.520 That'll do it for your AM update.
