00:00:00.000 Good morning, everyone. I'm Megan Kelly. It's Thursday, October 2nd, 2025, and this is your

00:00:08.200 AM Update. But we don't need military intervention in Portland. The National Guard begins training

00:00:13.240 in Oregon ahead of an imminent deployment to protect ICE officials and property in Portland,

00:00:19.080 despite opposition from local officials. Close to 25 percent of these drivers were

00:00:25.300 illegally driving. A sting operation in Oklahoma takes over 100 alleged illegal alien semi-truck

00:00:32.480 drivers off the road. Fed Governor Lisa Cook scores a temporary win at the Supreme Court in her battle

00:00:38.640 to keep her job. And Vice President J.D. Vance says the sombrero memes will continue until the

00:00:45.060 shutdown ends. All that and more coming up in just a moment on your AM Update.

00:01:51.780 Attorney General Pam Bondi, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and White House Homeland Security

00:01:57.240 Advisor Stephen Miller in Memphis, Tennessee last night speaking to federal agents amid a crime

00:02:03.160 crackdown in one of America's most dangerous cities. We are going to work hand in hand to make the most

00:02:10.140 violent crime city in the country have no crime. I see green, blue, black, tan, camouflage. All

00:02:20.100 together, one cause, one city. We are proud to be part of that effort to ensure we're defending the

00:02:26.340 homeland and defending those who defend the homeland. This is a all of government unlimited support

00:02:33.880 operation. ATF, DEA, FBI, ICE, Department of War, every resource we have. And they're not going to be

00:02:42.780 sitting behind a desk at a keyboard. We are sending in real cops with guns and badges to go out with you

00:02:51.700 on the street every single night making arrests. The idea that there is a square inch of block in this

00:02:58.840 city where a citizen doesn't feel safe is unacceptable. This is Memphis. This is the United

00:03:05.040 States of America. And all that bullshit is done. It's over. It's finished. Republican Governor of 0.99

00:03:11.720 Tennessee Bill Lee last month joining President Trump at the White House announcing the plan to

00:03:16.680 deploy the National Guard and more than a dozen federal agencies into the Democrat-run city. It is

00:03:22.540 unclear how long the surge is expected to last. A.G. Bondi posting to X yesterday morning, quote,

00:03:28.160 in just 48 hours, our Memphis Safe Task Force has made 53 arrests and seized 20 illegal firearms.

00:03:37.480 National Guard troops are soon expected to be on the streets of Portland, Oregon.

00:03:41.680 On Wednesday, President Trump posting to Truth Social, quote,

00:03:44.840 As I determined on September 27th, when I activated and called into service the National Guard in Oregon,

00:03:51.460 conditions continue to deteriorate into lawless mayhem. We will never allow mobs to take over our

00:03:57.320 streets, burn our cities, or destroy America. The National Guard is now in place and has been

00:04:02.700 dedicated to restoring law and order and ending the chaos, death, and destruction. We are a nation of law

00:04:09.620 and we will prevail. Fox 12 News reporting the guardsmen began arriving Tuesday, where they will

00:04:16.160 spend several days training in crowd control and use of force before beginning the mission in Portland.

00:04:21.560 As of Wednesday afternoon, an official from the Oregon Military Department saying troops will likely

00:04:27.520 move into Portland over the weekend. Earlier this week, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth mobilizing 200

00:04:33.660 Oregon National Guard troops under federal control for 60 days. This in response to ongoing protests

00:04:40.660 outside of the Portland ICE facility, which have resulted in more than two dozen arrests since June.

00:04:46.680 Democrat Governor Tina Kotek on MSNBC Monday night, MSNOW, calling the deployment unnecessary.

00:04:56.100 Portland, Oregon is a beautiful, vibrant, successful city. We are not a war zone. I was out there all

00:05:02.580 weekend long. People were out and about shopping, going to restaurants, going to soccer matches,

00:05:06.280 going to shows. Portland is a beautiful place and we are not under siege. There's no insurrection here.

00:05:12.040 When the president makes a choice to say I should have military troops in my state, I push back right

00:05:18.660 away. I continue to not understand what the mission is here, but we don't need military intervention in

00:05:24.640 Portland. Brigadier General Alan Grunewald, who leads the Oregon National Guard, penning a memo to

00:05:30.700 his troops on Monday, quote, the mission is straightforward. Protect federal facilities and

00:05:35.720 the federal employees working in them. The following night, DHS reporting six protesters were arrested

00:05:41.800 outside of the facility. DHS Assistant Secretary, Tricia McLaughlin, releasing a statement, quote,

00:05:48.380 they assaulted law enforcement, even putting one member of law enforcement into the hospital,

00:05:53.260 trespassed on federal property, attacked law enforcement by blinding them with strobe lights

00:05:57.720 and blocked the entrance to the facility. The state of Oregon and city of Portland filing a lawsuit

00:06:03.560 on Sunday to stop the deployment. A hearing on the state's motion for a temporary restraining order,

00:06:09.080 or TRO, is set for Friday. Obama-appointed District Judge Michael Simon is overseeing the case.

00:06:15.380 If the TRO is granted, the deployment will be immediately paused as the case continues through

00:06:20.880 the court system. Oklahoma Highway Patrol teaming up with ICE to run a sting operation at a way station

00:06:28.620 near the Texas border last week. In just three days, authorities are arresting 130 commercial

00:06:35.020 drivers. Oklahoma's Republican Governor Kevin Stitt on Fox News yesterday, raising concerns about the

00:06:41.780 sheer number of illegal aliens obtaining commercial driver's licenses, then operating 80,000-pound trucks

00:06:48.560 across this country. Yeah, you know, when my head of Highway Patrol called me and was, we were talking

00:06:53.140 about this operation, and to us, it's pretty simple. We're just going to enforce the law. And until

00:06:57.820 drive on roads in Oklahoma, you've got to be able to read and understand English, especially the people

00:07:03.420 driving 18-wheelers. So when he told me that he pulled over 520 vehicles at one of our checkpoints

00:07:09.940 as an operation, and over close to 25 percent of these drivers were illegally driving. They were from

00:07:18.300 China, Russia, Venezuela. It is unbelievable. And these aren't people that are here legally with a

00:07:25.420 legal CDL. They had overstayed their visa. They had illegally obtained this CDL. And they're just

00:07:33.260 violating the intent of the law and the absolute law. I think the American people need to understand

00:07:38.440 this is a problem, and we have to be a law-and-order state and a law-and-order country.

00:07:43.880 Authorities say many of the licenses were issued by sanctuary states, including one New York license

00:07:49.360 stating, no name given for a driver's first and middle name. No name given. The New York Department

00:07:56.880 of Motor Vehicles confirming to the New York Post the license is real. A DMV spokesperson telling the

00:08:02.340 Post, quote, the commercial driver's license was issued in accordance with all proper procedures,

00:08:07.860 including verification of the individual's identity through federally issued documentation,

00:08:13.340 adding, it's not uncommon for individuals to have only one name. Well, isn't that comforting?

00:08:18.100 According to Oklahoma Public Safety Commissioner Tim Tipton, many of the licenses were expired or

00:08:23.900 listed under a single name, making identification impossible. This operation comes just over one month

00:08:30.440 after three people in Florida were killed in an accident involving an illegal immigrant truck driver

00:08:36.200 making an illegal U-turn that suddenly blocked all lanes of traffic on a busy highway. The 28-year-old

00:08:43.420 driver did not speak English and failed to accurately identify three of four highway traffic signs in

00:08:49.220 an exam. Despite the accused man's lack of English language proficiency, he was granted a commercial

00:08:55.280 driver's license in Washington and then again in California. That driver, Harjinder Singh, pleading not

00:09:01.960 guilty earlier this week in Florida. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy last week announcing an emergency

00:09:07.720 action drastically restricting eligibility for commercial learner's permits and driver's

00:09:12.920 licenses to non-citizens after a nationwide audit exposed, quote, a catastrophic pattern of states

00:09:19.700 issuing licenses illegally to foreign drivers. Coming up, the Supreme Court grants embattled Federal

00:09:27.520 Reserve Governor Lisa Cook a temporary win as the president seeks to fire her. And Vice President J.D.

00:09:33.580 Vance offers advice to House Speaker Hakeem Jeffries on how to stop the president from mocking him on

00:09:39.460 social media. It's that time for Medicare annual enrollment again. The mailers, the robocalls,

00:09:49.520 the texts blowing up your phone. It can be a circus, but this is one Medicare message you need to hear.

00:09:55.540 Here is the truth. Medicare plans can change every year. And in 2026, premiums are jumping while many

00:10:02.460 benefits are being cut. That means even if you like your current plan, your costs could go up or you could

00:10:08.720 lose coverage for things you depend on. So let me tell you about Chapter. They are the only advisors who

00:10:15.220 compare every plan nationwide to make sure you are on the plan that best fits your needs. On average, they save

00:10:21.080 people $1,100 a year. I get it. Nobody wants to deal with Medicare. But in under 20 minutes, Chapter can review

00:10:28.280 your options. If your plan is already the best for 2026. Great. You're done. If not, they will help you

00:10:41.480 people who know Medicare inside and out. Call Chapter today at 27 Medicare. That's 27 Medicare to talk to a

00:10:50.160 trusted advisor today. The U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday agreeing to take up President Trump's

00:10:58.200 case to fire Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook. The high court also in a short unsigned order allowing

00:11:04.360 Ms. Cook to retain her position pending oral arguments set for January. The decision favoring Cook, at least

00:11:11.260 temporarily, is a bit of a departure for the court, which has routinely sided with President Trump's

00:11:16.040 authority to run the executive branch as he sees fit, permitting the firings of bureaucrats from independent

00:11:21.700 agencies, including the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the National Labor Relations Board, Federal Trade

00:11:27.640 Commission, and more. However, in May, the Supreme Court describing the Fed as a uniquely structured quasi-private

00:11:34.340 entity with a distinct historical position, setting it apart from other so-called independent executive

00:11:40.080 agencies. The Federal Reserve, responsible for setting interest rates and managing inflation, is part of the

00:11:46.020 executive branch, though it operates independently. Board members are nominated by the President and

00:11:52.580 confirmed by the Senate for 14-year terms. The High Court will need to determine just how independent

00:11:58.080 any executive branch agency, even the Fed, can be. Cook, nominated by Biden and narrowly confirmed to a

00:12:05.240 position expiring in 2038. The President can only fire Fed board members, quote, for cause, but that term is not

00:12:12.080 defined. In August, the nation's top housing finance regulator, Bill Pulte, submitting two criminal

00:12:18.520 referrals against Cook, alleging fraud on mortgage loan applications across three properties, where Cook is

00:12:24.420 accused of wrongly classifying the purpose of those properties, potentially to secure more favorable

00:12:29.440 financial terms. President Trump then attempted to fire Cook, who in return filed a lawsuit. Cook's team, arguing the

00:12:36.580 allegations do not qualify as cause for her termination because the mortgage applications were submitted before

00:12:43.020 before she joined the board. Solicitor General John Sauer, writing in a filing, quote, put simply, the President may

00:12:49.520 reasonably determine that interest rates paid by the American people should not be set by a governor who appears to have

00:12:55.540 lied about facts material to the interest rates she secured for herself. Sauer also noting Cook has not denied nor

00:13:02.580 attempted to explain the allegations against her. Quote, instead, in her latest brief, she once again

00:13:07.920 promises a full-throated rebuttal to be provided at some unspecified future date and in some unspecified

00:13:14.240 future proceeding. Her silence on this point speaks volumes. Cook, arguing her ouster, even temporarily,

00:13:21.420 could cause chaos in financial markets and, quote, eviscerate the independence of the Federal Reserve Board.

00:13:27.520 The Federal Reserve is scheduled to meet two more times before January, where they are expected

00:13:32.540 to vote on more interest rate cuts, which President Trump says are too late. Press Secretary Caroline

00:13:38.620 Levitt reacting on Wednesday. Look, we have respect for the Supreme Court, but they're going to hear the

00:13:43.400 actual case and make a determination on the legal argument in January, and we look forward to that

00:13:49.260 because we maintain that she was fired well within the president's legal authority to do so. She was

00:13:54.700 removed from the board, and we look forward to that case being fully played out at the Supreme Court.

00:13:59.520 Vice President J.D. Vance on Wednesday joining the White House press briefing, speaking out about

00:14:06.560 the government shutdown, asking Democrats to join Republicans in passing a temporary funding

00:14:11.840 extension so negotiations can begin on other funding priorities. Mr. Vance questioned twice by

00:14:18.480 reporters regarding memes shared by President Trump depicting House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries

00:14:23.940 sporting a curly mustache and sombrero as mariachi music plays in the background. The memes meant

00:14:30.400 to emphasize the Democrats' proposal to repeal measures in the big, beautiful bill that has

00:14:35.500 already been passed that end taxpayer health benefits for illegal immigrants. First up, a reporter from

00:14:42.340 Reuters. And is it helpful to post pictures of Leader Jeffries and a sombrero if you're trying to have

00:14:48.020 good faith talks with him? Oh, I think it's funny. The president's joking, and we're having a good

00:14:53.220 time. You can negotiate in good faith while also poking a little bit of fun at some of the absurdities

00:14:57.860 of the Democrats' positions and even, you know, poking some fun at the absurdity of the Democrats

00:15:02.420 themselves. I mean, I'll tell Hakeem Jeffries right now, I make this solemn promise to you that if you

00:15:07.480 help us reopen the government, the sombrero memes will stop. And I've talked to the president

00:15:11.560 of the United States about that. An AFP news agency correspondent hitting the racial angle.

00:15:17.680 Just going back to the sombrero, you said that the president's joking, but Hakeem Jeffries says

00:15:22.920 that these, you know, these memes were racist. What's your response to that? Hakeem Jeffries said

00:15:26.860 it was racist. And I know that he said that. And I honestly don't even know what that means. Like,

00:15:32.340 is he a Mexican-American that is offended by having a sombrero meme? I mean, I saw one of the major 0.63

00:15:39.440 TV stations put the meme up and then say, this is AI generated. And he had like the curly animated

00:15:46.360 mustache too. It's like, do the American people, do you really not realize the American people

00:15:50.620 recognize that he did not actually come to the White House wearing a sombrero and a black curly

00:15:55.700 animation mustache? Like, give the country a little bit of credit. We're all trying to do a very

00:16:00.640 important job for the American people. The president of the United States likes to have a little bit of

00:16:03.960 fun when he's doing it. And I think that's okay. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries responding on

00:16:08.760 X by posting a clip of the vice president with a widely popular right-wing meme of Mr. Vance's

00:16:14.780 distorted face superimposed over his actual face. Mr. Jeffries writing, quote, J.D. Vance thinks we

00:16:22.260 will surrender to the Republican effort to gut health care because of a sombrero meme. Not happening,

00:16:28.580 bro. You didn't burn me. I burned you, bro. And that'll do it for your AM update. I'm Megan Kelly.
