00:16:32.020 On the stand, Prosecutor Jeff Ashton brings George back to the Pontiac and asks what he recognized.

00:20:30.900 It was just a figure of speech. Two days after the 911 call, Deputy Jason Forgy is called in
00:20:37.800 with his cadaver dog to search the Pontiac. Before the dog ever alerts, Forgy says he smells it
00:20:44.520 himself. Then the dog works the Pontiac and alerts at the trunk. After that, investigators send
00:20:51.640 Deputy Forgy and the dog to the Anthony house. I didn't see anything in the trunk. I smelt it
00:20:57.300 clear as day. Then Forgy takes the dog into the Anthony backyard. The dog alerts again. Crime
00:21:05.440 scene technicians come in and dig up the spot but find nothing. Forgy brings him back the next day
00:21:12.240 after the ground has been turned over and this time the dog gives him nothing. On cross-examination
00:21:19.000 of Deputy 4G, Defense Attorney Jose Baez slows the whole thing down and takes 4G through it
00:21:25.780 one step at a time. There are such things as false alerts, right? Yes. Okay. Dogs are not
00:21:32.400 infallible. They are not perfect. No. Okay. Like humans. There is one more thing in that trunk
00:21:39.200 the jury has already seen in photos, a dark stain on the liner. Investigators test it for blood,
00:21:46.680 then they test it again. Both tests come back negative. Lead defense attorney Jose Baez takes
00:21:53.960 the state's own crime scene investigator, Gerardo Boise, through those results one by one.
00:22:01.060 In fact, Blue Star is one of the leading forensic tools to help you identify blood.
00:22:09.120 Correct. And this is important, obviously, in a case like this, because

00:22:45.800 Investigators find something else inside the trunk of the Pontiac.
00:22:49.160 A single hair, about nine inches long, light to medium brown, untreated, with a dark ring just above the root.
00:22:59.280 That band of color comes from a phenomenon known as post-mortem root banding.
00:23:05.940 Stephen Shaw, the FBI examiner behind the root banding validation study,
00:23:10.640 is anything but defensive when the defense gets its turn with him on the stand.
00:23:15.420 Baez asks him about this area of forensic science while casting doubt on its accuracy.
00:23:21.760 You don't know if post-mortem root banding is exclusively from people who are deceased, correct?

00:23:30.080 Okay. And you can never testify in a court of law to such a fact.

00:23:50.360 It's a pretty well-established discipline,
00:23:57.880 but it's mostly, for the most part, based on the experience,
00:24:01.680 experience of hair examiners and observing hairs known to be from deceased individuals,
00:24:07.580 hairs known to be from living individuals, and noticing these differences.
00:24:12.680 The defense gets Shaw to admit that he submitted his root banding validation study for approval
00:24:18.380 only after he'd already been deposed in this case and after he'd already given his opinion
00:24:24.380 on the hair evidence. They elicit an admission that Shaw then asked to have the study expedited
00:24:30.860 so it would be finished before trial.
00:24:33.800 He looks agenda-driven, perhaps even self-aggrandizing.
00:24:37.660 Then prosecutor Jeff Ashton gets up to rehabilitate Shaw.
00:24:42.220 The studies that you base your opinions on

00:33:07.860 called NetAnalysis. Stinger had generated both reports from the same Anthony family computer.
00:33:14.240 He first used a program called Net Analysis, then ran the data again through a newer program called Cash Back, which he believed would give him a more reliable result.
00:33:26.380 This time, Baez puts the earlier Net Analysis report in front of Stinger and takes him through it slowly, line by line, until they reach the Chloroform website, an entry from the afternoon of March 21st at 2.16 p.m.
00:33:42.320 And how many times does it show that that website was visited?

00:33:46.920 Then Baez puts the cash back report, the one the state had introduced,
00:33:51.040 in front of Sergeant Stinger and takes him to the very same entry.

00:35:50.580 The medical examiner sends samples to Bruce Goldberger, a nationally recognized forensic toxicologist at the University of Florida, for testing.
00:35:59.860 a piece of bone marrow scraped from inside the thigh bone and a hair taken from the mat around
00:36:06.860 the remains. Goldberger tests those samples for a long list of substances. Chloroform is one of
00:36:13.480 them. He finds none. But in his report, he adds an important caution. A negative test does not
00:36:20.900 prove that Kaylee was never exposed to chloroform before she died. In her opening statement,
00:36:26.360 Prosecutor Linda Drain Burdick told the jury the duct tape would explain how Kaylee died.
00:36:32.160 Now the state turns to the duct tape itself.
00:36:35.660 Several overlapping pieces of tape were found across the front of the lower skull,
00:36:40.680 over the lower jaw, and part of the upper jaw as well as still caught in Kaylee's hair.
00:36:45.980 In the written autopsy report, the medical examiner is unequivocal about when it was put there.
00:36:52.100 Quote,
00:36:52.240 This duct tape was clearly placed prior to decomposition, keeping the mandible in place.
00:36:58.980 In other words, the report says the tape was already on Kaylee before her face decomposed.
00:37:05.340 But then doctors take the stand.
00:37:07.380 Three of them examine the same remains,
00:37:09.820 and they do not all agree on whether that tape was holding Kaylee's jaw in place.
00:37:14.560 The first doctor is associate medical examiner Dr. Gary Utz.
00:37:19.740 He tells the jury that once a body reaches this stage of decomposition,
00:37:23.960 the lower jaw usually separates from the skull completely.
00:37:27.880 But Cayley's had not.
00:37:29.880 So the prosecutor asks him what was holding it there.
00:37:33.580 Utz does not say duct tape.
00:37:35.900 He points instead to the mat of hair around the skull
00:37:38.860 with plant roots grown through it, binding the bones together.
00:37:43.240 Then the state calls its second doctor, forensic anthropologist,
00:37:47.540 Dr. John Schultz, and puts the same photo in front of him. He's asked essentially the same
00:37:53.040 question. I think the tape was, was it here to the hair, but I don't recall it holding the
00:37:59.720 mandible in place in this view. Then comes the third doctor, forensic anthropologist Michael
00:38:05.040 Warren. He looks at the same remains and reaches a different conclusion. To Warren, the fact that
00:38:11.180 Kaylee's jaw is still lined up with the skull means something had to be holding it there.
00:38:16.240 And when prosecutor Jeff Ashton asks what that something was, Warren has one answer, the duct tape.
00:38:24.600 Do you have an opinion as to whether the duct tape was placed on Kaylee Anthony before decomposition?
00:38:31.740 It was placed on prior to decomposition.
00:38:34.220 What do you base that on?
00:38:35.860 On the position of the mandible still articulated with the rest of the cranium.

00:39:51.860 Garavaglia finds no trauma anywhere on Kaylee's skeleton, and she tells the jury that means less than they might surmise.

00:40:05.380 By the time Kaylee was found, there was no soft tissue left to examine, no bruising, no organs, no way to see injuries that might never have marked the bones at all.

00:40:22.260 The brand of duct tape, Henkel, is not a common brand, but the bold label stamped on the tape itself makes it easy to identify.

00:40:36.500 the Anthony house. The only matching tape they found on property was a patch covering the vent
00:40:43.380 on one of George Anthony's gas cans, one of the same gas cans Casey stole on June 24th, 2008.
00:40:52.580 On the stand, George is asked whether the tape is his. He evades the question.
00:40:59.060 Prosecutor Jeff Ashton later writes that in a deposition, Cindy told prosecutors that the
00:41:04.720 duct tape from the Anthony house had been used at a command center passing out missing flyers 0.90
00:41:10.840 for Kaylee. News footage shows the command center, George, and a roll of Henkel brand duct tape on
00:41:18.360 the table. The defense will later play it for the court, and George will continue to evade the
00:41:23.940 question of whether the duct tape is his. Before the tape ever reaches the DNA lab,
00:41:30.480 it goes first to the FBI's latent print section. An examiner named Elizabeth Fontaine is looking
00:41:37.660 for fingerprints. Near the end of her work, she puts one of the three pieces of tape under
00:41:43.120 ultraviolet light, and there, near one edge, she sees the outline of a heart, tiny, about the size
00:41:51.280 of a dime. Fontaine makes a note of it, tells the other investigators, and finishes the fingerprint
00:41:57.520 work she is there to do. Then she goes back to photograph the heart. It's gone. So the tape is
00:42:05.080 sent to another FBI examiner, Lori Gottesman, with a very specific job. Find that heart.
00:42:12.740 Gottesman runs the tape under different lights, different filters, equipment designed to pick up
00:42:17.800 things the naked eye cannot see. She finds nothing at all. But there is another heart in this case
00:42:24.740 and this one is not on the tape. Out in the woods, about 30 feet from Kaylee's skull, a crime scene
00:42:32.340 investigator finds a small piece of cardboard with a raised pink heart on it. The ground around it is
00:42:38.820 cluttered with dumped trash, old tires, even a discarded toilet seat. Police also search the
00:42:45.860 Anthony house. Their warrant specifically includes craft supplies, and inside Casey's bedroom they
00:42:52.300 find heart-shaped stickers. So now there is a heart seen briefly on the duct tape, a pink heart found
00:43:00.080 with trash in the woods, and heart stickers in Casey's room. But there is no hard evidence tying
00:43:06.200 all those hearts together. More than two years before the jury hears any of this, cable news
00:43:12.600 coverage had already gone much further, telling viewers definitively that a killer had placed a
00:43:18.860 heart-shaped sticker over Kaylee's mouth. The jury never hears that claim, and no evidence at trial
00:43:27.400 ever establishes that there was a heart-shaped sticker on the duct tape. The tape from Kaylee's
00:43:34.160 remains is then tested for DNA. One usable profile comes back. It belongs to Lori Gottesman,
00:43:42.960 the FBI examiner who had been trying to find the heart. Defense attorney Jose Baez asks her how
00:43:49.600 her DNA ended up on that tape. Can you recall a situation where you believe you might have
00:43:56.020 contaminated the duct tape? No, I have no idea how it happened or when
00:44:01.100 in this particular case.
00:44:03.780 And that is the only usable DNA profile

00:47:50.260 for the jury to decide. Kaylee's death has been ruled a homicide. The prosecution has laid out
