00:00:20.340 they created themselves. The mayor of Newark arrested amid a clash between ICE officials
00:00:25.740 and Democrat lawmakers, with DHS saying more charges could be on the way. Pope Leo delivers
00:00:32.060 his first Sunday address calling for peace around the world. If there is a successful citizen-led
00:00:37.640 referendum petition that is able to gather the requisite number of signatures, our government
00:00:42.220 will respect the democratic process and include that question on the 2026 provincial referendum
00:00:48.640 ballot as well. Could Alberta ditch Canada and become the 51st state? All that and more coming

00:02:00.960 The Department of Homeland Security investigating a chaotic Friday incident at a New Jersey detention
00:02:10.120 facility involving ICE officials, members of Congress, and the Democrat mayor of Newark.
00:02:15.840 Three Democrat lawmakers, Representatives Bonnie Watson Coleman, Rob Menendez, and LaMonica MacGyver,
00:02:23.200 arriving at Delaney Hall Detention Center in Newark, seeking a tour of the facility.
00:02:27.920 Mayor Ross Baraka, a vocal critic and frequent protester of the privately run facility, also on
00:02:35.040 the scene. What happened next is a he said, she said between the Democrat officials and Homeland
00:02:40.440 Security. Congresswoman LaMonica MacGyver, describing the visit as a matter of routine oversight.
00:02:46.740 It's the reason why we were there in the first place to have a tour of this facility that had just
00:02:51.220 opened up on May 1st. It had over 100 detainees. We were getting reports prior to our tour that
00:02:57.180 children were there. We did not know the status of the facility or the status of the detainees. And so
00:03:03.300 that is why we showed up there to do our job as members. And New Jerseyans count on us to do our
00:03:08.900 job. Immigration has been something that's in the back doors, in the backyards of New Jersey. And it's
00:03:14.160 our jobs to make sure everything is running properly at this facility.
00:03:18.380 Mayor Baraka was denied entry by Homeland Security. But according to interim U.S. Attorney for New Jersey,
00:03:24.460 Alina Habba, the mayor allegedly ignored multiple warnings to leave the facility.
00:03:30.320 Tensions began to escalate. DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin telling CNN the officials then
00:03:36.900 stormed the facility. That these members of Congress, including the mayor as well, in a mob of
00:03:42.480 protesters, as there was a bus full of detainees going through the gate, they stormed the gate and
00:03:48.820 actually entered the first security checkpoint. This put law enforcement at risk. And this actually put
00:03:53.940 the detainees as well at risk. ICE later releasing body camera footage showing Congresswoman McIver
00:03:59.700 appearing to physically engage with a law enforcement officer. That video is available
00:04:04.760 at MegynKelley.com. The mayor arrested at the scene and charged with trespassing,
00:04:10.280 released later that evening without bond. Congresswoman Watson Coleman and Congressman Rob
00:04:16.240 Menendez, son of disgraced former Senator Bob Menendez, laying the blame for the escalation on law
00:04:23.020 enforcement. But there's no reason for it. Nothing happened other than the chaos that they created
00:04:29.400 themselves. If anything, we were pushed and shoved and found in a very vulnerable situation.
00:04:38.620 Over 20 armed individuals for three members of Congress and one mayor. That's an act of
00:04:45.360 intimidation that's meant to silence not just the mayor, not just the three of us, but everyone who's
00:04:50.440 concerned about what's happening in this country right now. DHS's McLaughlin saying the members
00:04:54.840 of Congress may face charges. Are you suggesting that members of Congress will be arrested who
00:04:59.740 were there yesterday? This is an ongoing investigation and that is definitely on the table.
00:05:04.620 The three members of Congress were ultimately provided the tour of the facility on that day.
00:05:09.460 Congresswoman Coleman Watson saying the conditions, quote,
00:05:12.180 aren't bad. It's clean. They're feeding them.
00:05:16.580 President Trump departing this week for the first international working visit of his second
00:05:21.360 administration. The president set to visit Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates on a
00:05:28.080 Middle East swing focusing primarily on business development and economic cooperation.
00:05:33.580 Take a listen to Press Secretary Caroline Levitt on Friday from the briefing room.
00:05:37.980 President Trump will return to reemphasize his continued vision for a proud, prosperous and
00:05:44.120 successful Middle East where the United States and Middle Eastern nations are in cooperative
00:05:48.560 relationships and where extremism is defeated in place of commerce and cultural exchanges.
00:05:54.440 This trip ultimately highlights how we stand on the brink of the golden age for both America and the
00:05:59.920 Middle East, united by a shared vision of stability, opportunity and mutual respect.
00:06:05.200 Mr. Trump breaking with tradition, choosing Saudi Arabia for the first working visit as opposed
00:06:11.000 to more historic allies like the UK, Mexico or Canada. With this week's trip, the Saudis launching
00:06:17.900 a Saudi U.S. investment forum with more than 2,000 delegates expected to attend, including Elon Musk,
00:06:25.080 Mark Zuckerberg, BlackRock CEO Larry Fink and White House AI and crypto czar David Sachs.
00:06:32.380 Despite the White House's desire to focus primarily on business and investments, the trip comes amid
00:06:38.580 rising tensions on multiple fronts. The Trump team is in active negotiations on a new Iran nuclear
00:06:45.140 deal, supported by the Saudis and the other Gulf states who would like to see diplomatic efforts
00:06:50.600 prevail over military force. Qatar also mediating talks between Hamas and Israel. Seeking a resolution
00:06:57.760 to conflict is a major priority of the Trump administration. Many more deals to be discussed,
00:07:03.920 including the Saudis' desire to develop their own civilian nuclear energy capabilities.
00:07:09.140 Last week, President Trump teasing a major announcement ahead of the trip.
00:07:12.760 We're going to have a very, very big announcement to make, like as big as it gets. And I won't
00:07:19.080 tell you on what, but it's going to and it's very positive. I'd also I tell you if it was negative
00:07:24.060 or positive. I can't keep that up. It is really, really positive. And that announcement will be made
00:07:30.900 either Thursday or Friday or Monday before we leave. But it'll be one of the most important
00:07:36.780 announcements that have been made in many years about a certain subject, a very important subject.
00:07:43.240 The Associated Press, citing anonymous sources, says President Trump is expected to announce the
00:07:49.260 U.S. will rename the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Arabia. The reports, not yet officially confirmed,
00:07:56.560 though if true, would be a snub to the Iranians, who see the current name as a symbol of their
00:08:01.940 regional influence. In advance of the trip, ABC's Jonathan Karl made waves yesterday with his
00:08:08.160 exclusive reporting that the Trump administration is poised to accept a, quote, palace in the sky,
00:08:14.920 end quote, from the Qatari government. According to ABC, the Trump administration will accept a,
00:08:21.400 quote, super luxury Boeing 747 jumbo jet for use as the new Air Force One until shortly before he
00:08:28.740 leaves office, at which time ownership of the plane will be transferred to the Trump Presidential
00:08:33.620 Library Foundation. ABC continuing, quote, the highly unusual, unprecedented arrangement is sure
00:08:41.600 to raise questions about whether it is legal for the Trump administration and ultimately the Trump
00:08:46.940 Presidential Library Foundation to accept such a valuable gift from a foreign power. Under Article 1,
00:08:53.920 Section 9, Clause 8 of the Constitution, quote, no person holding any office of trust shall,
00:09:01.260 without the consent of Congress, accept any present or emolument, end quote. An emolument is a fee for a
00:09:08.360 service. Attorney General Pam Bondi claims the gift does not violate the Constitution because it is not
00:09:16.120 conditioned on an official act and it is not being given to an individual, but to the U.S. government and
00:09:22.580 then to a presidential library foundation. A Qatari government spokesperson pushing back on the
00:09:28.540 story saying, quote, the matter remains under review by the respective legal departments and no decision
00:09:34.760 has been made. A Wall Street Journal report from early May revealed that President Trump was so
00:09:40.520 frustrated with Boeing's failure to deliver an on-time and on-budget order for two new Air Force One
00:09:45.880 planes placed during his first administration but delayed until at least 2035. He instead commissioned
00:09:52.720 a smaller U.S. defense contractor to outfit a plane formerly used by the Qatari government. ABC was
00:09:59.140 first to reveal the plane would be a gift, not a purchase. The Qatari plane would only serve as an
00:10:04.360 interim solution until Boeing eventually completes the order or until Mr. Trump leaves office, taking it with
00:10:10.460 him. Coming up, Pope Leo's first Sunday address from the Vatican and talk of a referendum brewing in
00:10:17.560 Alberta. Could Canada's oil-rich province become America's 51st state?
00:10:27.220 As President Trump is settling into his new administration, one of the top Democrats in Congress
00:10:31.780 aiming to undermine the Trump agenda is Democrat Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois. And according to our sponsor,
00:10:38.400 the Electronic Payments Coalition, Senator Durbin has a new plan, a government takeover of your credit
00:10:44.600 card. Today, Americans have thousands of choices in credit cards, but they say Senator Durbin's plan
00:10:50.240 will result in less competition and less security, which means more risk for your credit and your
00:10:55.920 identity. You can learn more for yourself at guardyourcard.org, and you could consider telling
00:11:02.680 your senators to stop Dick Durbin's government takeover of your credit card before it's too late.
00:11:08.400 Pope Leo XIV making his first Sunday address from the Vatican since being chosen to head the
00:11:17.240 Catholic Church. The Pope calling for peace around the world, saying we are facing the tragedy of a
00:11:23.340 quote, third world war in pieces. The pontiff speaking in Italian, calling attention to the war in Ukraine.
00:11:30.320 I carry in my heart the suffering of the beloved Ukrainian people. May whatever is possible be done
00:11:42.380 to reach an authentic, true and lasting peace as quickly as possible. May all the prisoners be freed.
00:11:52.540 May children return to their families.
00:11:55.240 Pope Leo also praising the newly announced ceasefire between nuclear-armed India and Pakistan,
00:12:02.580 following escalating tensions in a series of cross-border attacks. Pope Leo also commenting
00:12:08.580 on the war in Gaza.
00:12:09.680 I'm deeply hurt by what is happening in the Gaza Strip. May a ceasefire immediately come into effect.
00:12:22.900 May humanitarian aid be allowed to the civilian population and may all hostages be freed.
00:12:32.100 The Pope will hold a media availability later today ahead of Sunday's papal inauguration.
00:12:37.680 And speaking of Gaza, President Trump with some good news. Eden Alexander, an American held hostage
00:12:45.060 by Hamas, is coming home. President Trump calling this a step taken in good faith toward the U.S.
00:12:51.780 and a first of the final steps, quote, to put an end to this very brutal war.
00:12:57.640 Though Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is adamant that his country will never become the 51st state,
00:13:03.440 some Albertans are not ruling it out. The oil-rich Canadian province growing increasingly angry,
00:13:09.820 frustrated with federal policies seen as stifling Alberta's oil industry. The Alberta Premier,
00:13:15.900 the Canadian version of Governor, Danielle Smith, laying out her constituents' concerns last week.
00:13:21.820 Our province has contributed hundreds of billions of dollars more to the federal treasury for use in
00:13:27.220 other parts of the country than will ever receive back in benefits. We have allowed this to occur because,
00:13:33.140 quite frankly, we know how blessed our province is with an endowment of natural resources that no
00:13:38.960 other country on earth possesses. And we want all of our friends, families, and fellow Canadians
00:13:44.880 across the country to benefit from it. We don't ask for special treatment or handouts. We just want to
00:13:51.660 be free, free to develop and export that incredible wealth of resources we have for the benefit of our
00:13:57.880 families and future generations. The Premier also announcing the creation of a negotiating team
00:14:03.940 to engage with Prime Minister Carney's administration. Premier Smith sending a veiled threat ahead of
00:14:09.820 negotiations. While she may not personally support an independence referendum, Alberta's government
00:14:15.680 won't stand in the way if its people demand one. To be clear from the outset, our government will not be
00:14:21.600 putting a vote on separation from Canada on the referendum ballot. However, if there is a successful
00:14:28.300 citizen-led referendum petition that is able to gather the requisite number of signatures requesting
00:14:34.080 such a question to be put on a referendum, our government will respect the democratic process
00:14:40.240 and include that question on the 2026 provincial referendum ballot as well.
00:14:45.560 A new poll from a non-profit organization, the Angus Reid Institute, showing 36% of Albertans support
00:14:53.200 leaving Canada versus 60% who favor staying. In a recent rally supporting separation, some Albertans
00:15:00.840 going as far as to urge their neighbors to write to the White House in support of joining the U.S.
00:15:06.140 Alberta, one of Canada's western provinces, holds vast oil reserves, responsible for about 84%
00:15:12.880 of Canada's total oil production.
00:15:16.460 That'll do it for your AM update.
