00:03:37.640 Another briefing set for this morning.

00:03:41.680 Late last night, authorities in Rhode Island announcing the release of a person of interest

00:03:47.320 taken into custody early Sunday morning in connection with the mass shooting at Brown University

00:03:53.080 on Saturday that left two dead, nine injured.

00:03:57.340 Providence Mayor Brett Smiley announcing the decision.

00:04:00.320 Shortly, we will be releasing the person of interest who had been detained earlier today,

00:04:08.860 but we want to inform the community that that individual will shortly be released from Providence Police.

00:04:15.780 Our investigation into this horrific act remains ongoing.

00:04:20.080 It has been ongoing, and I know there's been some frustration from members of the community and others

00:04:25.960 about the language that we've been using about the person of interest and such,

00:04:31.420 and that speaks to directly the fact that this investigation was and continues ongoing,

00:04:36.900 and we will continue to endeavor to not confirm any information that is not yet confirmable.

00:04:42.920 And that is how we can best be transparent with all the members of our community

00:04:47.880 to share the best information that we have.

00:04:50.960 Law enforcement sources telling the New York Post earlier in the day

00:04:53.960 the person of interest was found in a hotel about half an hour away

00:04:58.620 with a revolver and a small handgun featuring a, quote,

00:05:02.960 unique laser light on the handgun, which sources say helped lead investigators to this person.

00:05:09.100 Authorities not going into specifics about what evidence may or may not have been recovered from the hotel.

00:05:15.980 Instead, Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Nerona offering this.

00:05:21.140 Certainly there was some degree of evidence that pointed to this individual,

00:05:25.820 but that evidence needed to be corroborated and confirmed.

00:05:29.580 And over the last 24 hours, leading into just very, very recently,

00:05:35.080 that evidence now points in a different direction.

00:05:38.040 So what that means is that this person of interest needs to be and should be released.

00:05:43.400 I think what is really unfortunate, that this person's name was leaked to the public.

00:05:50.400 It's hard to put that back in the bottle, okay?

00:05:54.460 So we're going to proceed very carefully here.

00:05:57.800 There is too much at stake for the victims of this horrific crime and their families

00:06:02.660 to take chances with respect to this investigation.

00:06:05.900 We have not yet solved this case, but I'm confident we're going to do that.

00:06:11.600 And I'm confident we're going to do that in the very near future.

00:06:15.180 Providence Chief of Police Oscar Perez saying the tip, pointing to the person of interest,

00:06:20.680 was picked up by detectives and handed to the FBI, who ran it down.

00:06:24.940 Yesterday afternoon, FBI Director Kash Patel posting an update on X,

00:06:30.860 saying the FBI established a command post to intake, develop, and analyze leads and run them to ground.

00:06:37.720 We activated the FBI's cellular analysis survey team to provide critical geolocation capabilities.

00:06:44.160 As a result, early this morning, FBI Boston's Safe Streets Task Force,

00:06:49.740 with assistance from the U.S. Marshals and the Coventry, Rhode Island Police Department,

00:06:54.520 detained a person of interest in a hotel room in Coventry, Rhode Island.

00:06:59.200 Turns out authorities now say that wasn't the guy.

00:07:03.000 Mayor Smiley saying a new shelter-in-place alert will not be imposed,

00:07:07.540 despite the AG saying a murderer is on the loose.

00:07:10.520 The mayor saying there's no need for a new shelter-in-place order,

00:07:14.440 because no new shootings have taken place since the one on Saturday afternoon.

00:07:20.240 Authorities saying all video evidence has been examined and more footage is required,

00:07:25.140 asking residents to upload any video that might be helpful to

00:07:28.680 FBI.gov forward slash Brown University shooting.

00:07:33.540 AG Nerona saying the building where the shooting took place is old and lacks security cameras.

00:07:39.020 The mass shooting occurring around 4 p.m. Saturday,

00:07:42.640 when shots began ringing out inside the engineering and physics building of Brown University.

00:07:48.340 Teaching assistant John Oduro yesterday on CNN,

00:07:51.700 describing the moment the shooter, dressed in black, entered his classroom.

00:07:55.940 I was giving my closing remarks,

00:07:58.720 and then as soon as everybody stood up and started exiting the room,

00:08:02.800 we heard what sounded like gunshots outside the door,

00:08:05.900 and we heard screaming from various students.

00:08:10.980 And then about five seconds later,

00:08:13.120 we see a gunman entered the room,

00:08:15.480 and then we just screamed something and just started shooting.

00:08:19.920 I was standing in the front of the auditorium,

00:08:22.400 and he came through the bag,

00:08:24.840 so we pretty much directly made eye contact.

00:08:28.180 And then as soon as that happened,

00:08:31.100 I looked at my students and signaled them to come to the front,

00:08:35.260 and then I just ducked.

00:08:36.820 And was the gunman shooting when he entered the room?

00:08:40.760 No, he came in, pointed the gun,

00:08:44.000 and then screamed something.

00:08:45.800 I don't know what he said,

00:08:47.820 and none of the other students know what he said,

00:08:50.400 but yeah, then he just started shooting right after that.

00:08:54.320 Authorities say the shooter, carrying a handgun,

00:08:57.060 firing more than 40 rounds during the attack.

00:09:00.220 Brown University President Christina Paxson

00:09:20.380 Were they leaving for a club?

00:09:22.100 I don't know. I don't know.

00:16:26.420 in Palmyra,

00:16:28.100 a city in central Syria,

00:16:30.060 believed to be carried out

00:16:34.260 security forces.

00:16:36.060 Three more U.S. soldiers

00:16:48.080 were meeting with

00:16:49.100 local counterparts,

00:16:50.100 according to the New York Times.

00:16:51.980 The lone attacker

00:16:52.680 opening fire

00:16:53.480 with an automatic weapon

00:16:54.780 from a nearby building.

00:16:56.600 Syrian security forces

00:16:57.860 returning fire,

00:17:02.420 for treatment

00:17:02.980 to a military base

00:17:04.200 in southeastern Syria.

00:17:06.140 President Trump

00:17:06.760 reporting yesterday,

00:17:08.000 two of the wounded

00:17:08.780 service members

00:17:09.500 have been released

00:17:10.340 from the hospital.

00:17:11.560 The third is expected

00:17:12.660 to recover.

00:17:14.120 Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds

00:17:15.500 confirming the deceased

00:17:16.740 soldiers were part

00:17:18.060 of the Iowa National Guard.

00:17:20.220 Secretary of War Pete Hegseth

00:17:21.740 in a social media statement

00:17:23.120 saying, quote,

00:17:24.120 let it be known

00:17:24.820 if you target Americans

00:17:26.300 anywhere in the world,

00:17:27.800 you will spend the rest

00:17:28.580 of your brief anxious life

00:17:30.000 knowing the United States

00:17:31.440 will hunt you, 0.70

00:17:32.820 find you, 1.00

00:17:33.580 and ruthlessly kill you. 1.00

00:17:35.500 President Trump 1.00

00:17:36.180 from the White House lawn

00:17:37.200 on Saturday.

00:17:38.400 We warned the loss

00:17:39.780 of three great patriots

00:17:41.940 in Syria.

00:17:43.620 You know how it happened.

00:17:44.840 there was an ambush

00:17:46.680 bearable.

00:17:48.000 We also have three wounded.

00:17:49.520 They seem to be doing

00:17:50.520 pretty well.

00:17:52.360 But we warned the loss.

00:17:53.400 These are great,

00:17:54.180 three great people.

00:17:55.960 And it's just a terrible thing.

00:17:58.640 Syria, by the way,

00:17:59.580 was fighting along with us.

00:18:01.100 The president,

00:18:01.920 the new president of Syria

00:18:03.800 is, as they told me,

00:18:05.900 and I'm not surprised,

00:18:07.300 he's devastated

00:18:08.100 by what happened.

00:18:10.080 This was an ISIS attack 0.77

00:18:11.560 on us and Syria.

00:18:14.440 And again,

00:18:15.940 we mourn the loss

00:18:17.140 and we pray for them

00:18:18.760 and their parents

00:18:19.520 and their loved ones.

00:18:21.200 Very, very sad.

00:18:22.220 Mr. President,

00:18:23.060 will the U.S.

00:18:23.860 retaliate against ISIS?

00:18:25.940 Yeah, we will.

00:18:26.980 We will retaliate.

00:18:28.400 Thank you very much.

00:18:29.100 U.S. and Syrian officials

00:18:31.140 telling the Wall Street Journal

00:18:32.240 the attacker

00:18:32.780 was a member

00:18:33.560 of the Syrian security forces

00:18:35.360 who was about to be fired

00:18:37.060 for holding extremist views.

00:18:39.620 As mentioned,

00:18:40.380 the attacker

00:18:40.780 is believed to be

00:18:41.740 a member of ISIS

00:18:42.740 who, CBS News reports,

00:18:45.060 had infiltrated

00:18:45.900 the local security force,

00:18:47.540 though no group

00:18:48.200 has claimed responsibility

00:18:49.300 for the attack.

00:18:50.680 This attack

00:18:51.500 marking the first

00:18:52.300 American casualties

00:18:53.420 since dictator

00:18:54.620 Bashar al-Assad's regime

00:18:56.020 was toppled last year.

00:18:57.280 U.S. officials

00:18:58.440 have not yet indicated

00:18:59.560 if the attack

00:19:00.200 will prompt

00:19:00.760 any policy changes

00:19:02.000 in the region.

00:19:04.060 What began

00:19:05.200 as an internal

00:19:06.140 personnel matter

00:19:07.180 within the prestigious

00:19:08.140 University of Michigan

00:19:09.500 football program

00:19:10.520 rapidly exploding

00:19:12.060 into a wild scandal,

00:19:14.140 leading to now-former

00:19:15.400 star head coach

00:19:16.480 Sharon Moore's arrest.

00:19:18.820 Last Wednesday,

00:19:19.700 the Michigan athletic director

00:19:21.120 firing 39-year-old Moore,

00:19:23.920 terminating his

00:19:24.580 $27.5 million contract

00:19:27.060 over five years

00:19:28.160 for cause,

00:19:29.580 thus voiding the deal

00:19:30.440 and nullifying

00:19:31.100 the payment obligations.

00:19:32.660 This upon learning

00:19:33.640 of a, quote,

00:19:34.420 inappropriate relationship

00:19:35.960 Moore had been having

00:19:36.940 with an employee.

00:19:38.540 While the university

00:19:39.540 has not publicly

00:19:40.400 named that staffer,

00:19:42.400 several outlets

00:19:43.100 reporting it was

00:19:43.960 his executive assistant,

00:19:45.520 32-year-old Paige Shiver.

00:19:48.040 University policy

00:19:49.120 stipulates that

00:19:50.000 a supervisor

00:19:50.640 may not initiate

00:19:51.700 or attempt to initiate

00:19:52.880 an intimate relationship

00:19:54.280 with someone

00:19:54.840 over whom

00:19:55.560 they have

00:19:56.280 supervisory authority.

00:19:58.040 The Wall Street Journal

00:19:59.220 reporting the saga

00:20:00.120 began in mid-October

00:20:01.700 when a tipster

00:20:02.680 alerted school officials

00:20:04.040 that Moore was having

00:20:05.420 an inappropriate relationship

00:20:06.880 with a staff member.

00:20:08.440 The university

00:20:09.120 opening an investigation

00:20:10.320 at the time,

00:20:11.440 but Moore,

00:20:12.120 who is married

00:20:12.960 with three kids,

00:20:14.260 and the alleged mistress

00:20:15.440 denied the relationship.

00:20:17.440 The school then hiring

00:20:18.320 an outside law firm

00:20:19.460 to investigate further.

00:20:20.600 Blue and May's Review,

00:20:22.980 a Michigan sports-focused outlet,

00:20:25.100 reporting on Monday

00:20:25.940 amid rumors of the affair,

00:20:27.660 but without substantial proof,

00:20:29.980 university officials

00:20:30.900 advised Moore

00:20:31.740 not to work directly

00:20:33.240 with Shiver,

00:20:34.440 Moore then reportedly

00:20:35.380 moving to fire Shiver

00:20:36.960 rather than relocating her

00:20:38.600 to another department.

00:20:40.140 Not it.

00:20:40.920 Not it, sir.

00:20:42.320 A prosecutor saying

00:20:43.280 Shiver ended

00:20:44.160 the relationship

00:20:44.820 last Monday.

00:20:46.460 On Wednesday,

00:20:47.260 the Wall Street Journal

00:20:47.920 reporting,

00:20:48.860 Shiver contacted

00:20:49.880 the law firm

00:20:50.680 to confirm

00:20:51.580 the relationship

00:20:52.280 from about 2022

00:20:54.060 to 2024,

00:20:56.100 saying she had emails,

00:20:57.360 texts,

00:20:57.840 and phone records

00:20:58.780 to prove it.

00:21:00.400 Later that same day,

00:21:01.980 Moore was let go,

00:21:03.460 reportedly going

00:21:04.220 to Shiver's home

00:21:05.380 where he then

00:21:06.100 allegedly broke in

00:21:07.360 and threatened her

00:21:08.280 and himself

00:21:09.220 with a knife.

00:21:11.000 Shiver calling 911

00:21:11.980 telling dispatchers

00:21:13.060 Moore was attacking her

00:21:14.180 and had been

00:21:15.040 stalking her for months.

00:21:17.180 A prosecutor,

00:21:18.080 later saying Moore,

00:21:18.980 armed with butter knives,

00:21:21.020 told Shiver,

00:21:21.680 quote, 0.99

00:21:21.880 I'm going to kill myself. 1.00

00:21:23.360 I'm going to make you watch. 1.00

00:21:25.060 My blood is on your hands. 1.00

00:21:26.840 You've ruined my life. 0.98

00:21:28.800 Moore then fleeing the home

00:21:30.040 with authorities

00:21:30.620 arresting him

00:21:31.280 a short time later.

00:21:32.840 He was booked

00:21:33.340 into the county jail

00:21:34.280 spending Wednesday

00:21:35.060 and Thursday night

00:21:36.040 in custody

00:21:36.720 before his Friday arraignment.

00:21:39.240 Authorities charging Moore

00:21:40.140 with felony

00:21:40.880 third-degree home invasion

00:21:42.360 and two misdemeanor charges,

00:21:44.640 stalking and breaking

00:21:45.700 and entering,

00:21:46.680 the felony charge

00:21:47.460 carrying up to five years

00:21:48.800 in prison,

00:21:50.020 Moore pleading

00:21:50.480 not guilty to the charges,

00:21:52.780 a magistrate setting bond

00:21:53.920 at $25,000
