00:04:25.640 morning in Boulder, Colorado, less than four degrees outside. Candy canes line the winding

00:04:31.820 walkway to the Ramsey house at 755 15th street. It's a large brick Tudor style home in a well-to-do

00:04:39.660 neighborhood, elegantly decorated for Christmas. John Ramsey is up before dawn, puttering around.

00:04:47.160 He talked about that morning with CNN. We were planning to get up early and fly to Michigan

00:04:52.660 to meet my older kids for like a second Christmas. Our normal routine like that, if we're going to

00:05:00.880 go somewhere, is let the kids stay in bed. And then when we're ready to go, we get them up and

00:08:14.840 paper are waiting. Patsy spoke with CNN a week after the murder. It was quite early in the

00:08:22.180 morning, and I'd gotten dressed and was on my way to the kitchen to make some coffee.

00:17:29.500 Whitson pulls up to the Ramsey house. He parks and quickly reads the ransom note. He thinks about

00:17:35.420 the unusual nature of a child being held for ransom. The first he's heard of this in 22 years

00:17:42.200 on the force. He calls in the FBI. John takes Burke to a nearby friend's house. He phones a

00:17:48.320 banker friend who raises his credit limit to $118,000, the exact amount of the ransom,

00:17:55.320 and they wait. Hours go by, but no word from the kidnappers.

00:18:30.680 staircases narrow hallways and rooms that do not connect in any obvious way john and patsy had

00:18:37.560 converted the top floor into their master suite, JonBenet's bedroom is one level below near Burke's

00:18:43.780 room and almost across the house from her parents. A sound in the middle of the night would be

00:18:49.480 nearly impossible to hear. Soon more police arrive, including detectives and a forensics team.

00:18:56.520 They dust the house for fingerprints and search for other clues, but find no obvious signs of a

00:19:01.640 struggle and no clear crime scene. A phone call is made and police put a canine unit with a tracking

00:19:08.620 dog on standby. The dog is never called to the house. Sergeant Robert Whitson goes upstairs and

00:19:17.460 looks in JonBenet's bedroom. It appears largely undisturbed. Her clothes and toys are there.

00:19:24.480 The bed is not made and has clearly been slept in, but no JonBenet. He shuts her door, has officers

00:19:38.060 police do not cordon off the rest of the house. Below all the bedrooms lies the main living level,

00:19:45.080 the kitchen, dining areas, and the back spiral staircase the family uses every day.

00:19:50.260 And then there's the basement, a maze of storage rooms, utility spaces, and passages. Burke keeps

00:19:57.960 an electric train set in the basement in what's known as the train room. Nearby is a small windowless

00:20:03.920 storage room the family calls the wine cellar, even though no wine is kept there. This is the

00:20:09.300 room Officer French passed in his early morning search without opening the door. Officers ask

00:20:17.040 for handwriting samples from John and Patsy to compare to the ransom note. John provides two

00:20:22.940 notepads, one with his writing, one with Patsy's. The Boulder PD handwriting expert, Detective

00:20:29.100 Jeff Kithcart, finds something immediately interesting. Behind the obvious sample of

00:20:35.420 Patsy's handwriting, one page of the notepad contains a partial phrase, Mr. and Mrs., followed

00:20:43.460 by a black vertical line. To Kithcart, this line looks very much like the beginnings of an R and

00:20:51.300 like this page is the first draft of the ransom note. Suddenly, it seems the ransom note was

00:20:57.640 written inside the Ramsey home, using the family's very own scribble pad. The ransom note had promised

00:21:05.460 that the kidnapper or kidnappers would call between 8 and 10 a.m. 8 a.m. rolls around, 8.30.

00:21:13.620 John paces the floor. 9 a.m. comes and goes. The mood in the house becomes increasingly tense.

00:21:47.220 Detective Linda Arndt finds herself the only law enforcement officer at the house

00:21:51.360 to control seven civilians, John and Patsy, four family friends,

00:21:55.440 and the Ramseys' pastor, the Reverend Roll Hoverstock of St. John's Episcopal Church.

00:23:34.480 And I opened the door and, of course, immediately found JonBenet.

00:23:38.880 JonBenet's body lies in a pile, covered with a white blanket.

00:25:01.340 And, um, um, and I think, um, we walked into the living room, and she was there, and John said, she's, she's gone.

00:26:26.860 Law enforcement and the forensics team rush back to the Ramsey house,

00:26:30.940 though moving the body twice presents a unique challenge for evidence collection.

00:26:36.600 Officers hurry to clear the scene so John and Patsy relocate to a friend's house in South Boulder.

00:26:42.020 We rushered out of the house pretty quickly, and we never went back in that home.

00:26:52.100 Past Santa Claus in his sleigh and a double row of candy canes,

00:26:56.480 deputy coroners brought the body of six-year-old JonBenet Ramsey from her upscale home.

00:27:01.680 Someone inside this house had made a 911 call saying that little JonBenet had been kidnapped.

00:27:07.120 Well, when police got here, they went inside the house,

00:27:09.640 And a short time later, they found the little girl's body.

00:27:12.880 The Boulder County coroner arrives at the Ramsey home around 8 p.m. on December 26th.

00:27:18.260 His examination is short, lasting about 10 minutes.

00:27:21.960 But several things become clear right away.

00:27:25.120 According to the autopsy, whoever killed JonBenet took white olefin cord and tied her wrists together.

00:27:33.380 The person used the same cord to make what's commonly known as a garrote or a ligature.

00:27:39.640 to strangle JonBenet. A garrote is a brutally simple mechanism. It uses a cord around the neck

00:27:45.800 and some kind of handle to twist that cord tighter. The more it's twisted, the more pressure

00:27:51.660 it puts on the neck, cutting off air and blood flow. It's similar to a tourniquet, but with a

00:27:57.120 deadly purpose. Police say the knot on this garrote was tied by someone who understood how a garrote

00:28:03.420 is made, and the fact that her hair and her gold cross necklace are tangled in it suggests that
