The Megyn Kelly Show - Trump's Plan to Fix Crime in D.C, Putin Summit Details, Cuomo Teases ＂Zohran's Law＂： AM Update 8⧸12

00:00:00.000 Good morning, everyone. I'm Megan Kelly. It's Tuesday, August 12th, 2025. And this

00:00:07.720 is your AM update. This is Liberation Day in D.C. and we're going to take our capital

00:00:13.180 back. President Trump declaring a crime emergency in Washington, D.C., announcing a federal

00:00:19.160 takeover of the city's police department and the deployment of the National Guard.

00:00:23.940 So I'm going in to speak to Vladimir Putin and I'm going to be telling him you got to

00:00:29.680 end this war. Mr. Trump also previewing his message to Russian President Vladimir Putin

00:00:34.520 ahead of their high stakes summit this Friday over the Ukraine war. And things get personal

00:00:40.500 in New York City's mayoral election with candidates Andrew Cuomo and socialist Zoran Mamdani trading

00:00:46.440 attacks. All that and more coming up in just a moment on your AM update. I've been talking a lot

00:00:55.020 about Riverbend Ranch lately because I love their stakes. Those Riverbend Ranch steaks

00:01:00.420 are something else. Riverbend Ranch has taken black Angus beef to a whole new level. Did you

00:01:06.760 recently hear RFKJ, head of the Maha movement, saying really all he eats is red meat and fermented

00:01:12.540 products? Hello? Riverbend Ranch has got you covered. For the last 35 years, Riverbend Ranch has been

00:01:19.280 creating a very elite Angus herd by using ultrasound to select genetically superior cattle with a focus

00:01:26.100 on flavor and tenderness. When you buy from Riverbend Ranch, you're not only supporting the 64 cowboys and

00:01:32.020 cowgirls and their families who work on the ranch, but you're also supporting over 260 other U.S. ranches

00:01:37.860 and the hundreds of American families who work on them. It is born in the USA, raised in the USA and

00:01:44.440 processed in the USA. It is aged to perfection for 21 days and shipped directly from the ranch to your

00:01:50.300 home. This is not your average black Angus beef. So order from Riverbend Ranch dot com. Use the promo

00:01:56.660 code Megan for 20 bucks off your first order and let me know what you think. Riverbend Ranch dot com

00:02:01.860 promo code Megan. President Trump declaring Monday at the White House that he has seen enough in Washington,

00:02:10.260 D.C. when it comes to crime, homelessness and general squalor. The president invoking Section 740 of the

00:02:18.000 D.C. Home Rule Act to take over the city's police department, as well as deploying 800 members of the

00:02:23.980 National Guard to the city's streets. I'm announcing a historic action to rescue our nation's capital from

00:02:31.900 crime, bloodshed, bedlam and squalor and worse. This is Liberation Day in D.C. and we're going to take our

00:02:41.540 capital back. We're taking it back under the authorities vested in me as the president of the

00:02:47.580 United States. I'm officially invoking Section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act. You know what

00:02:54.240 that is. And placing the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department under direct federal control. And you'll

00:03:01.920 be meeting the people that will be directly involved with that. Very good people, but they're tough

00:03:09.560 and they know what's happening and they've done it before. In addition, I'm deploying the National Guard to

00:03:17.520 help reestablish law, order of public safety in Washington, D.C. And they're going to be allowed to do

00:03:23.760 their job properly. President Trump also signing an executive order declaring a crime emergency in

00:03:29.380 Washington, delegating control of the D.C. police force to Attorney General Pam Bondi. Ms. Bondi 0.97

00:03:35.800 emphasizing the need to make the city safe for its millions of visitors every year. Let me be crystal

00:03:41.780 clear. Crime in D.C. is ending and ending today. We are going to use every power we have to fight

00:03:48.800 criminals here. Families come here every summer. Our museums are free. We have the National Zoo.

00:03:55.700 We have the National Gallery. D.C. should be a place where everyone can come and feel safe. Behind me

00:04:03.540 and to my side, we have some of the best career law enforcement and prosecutors in the country who are

00:04:10.040 ready to take this on. We're going to all work together. That's what we all do in this room. We work

00:04:16.280 together. We fight. Do not underestimate one person in this room. We're going to make D.C. beautiful.

00:04:23.140 We're going to make D.C. safe again. Under the Home Rule Act, the emergency controls expire in 30 days

00:04:29.320 unless Congress authorizes extended federal control. Mr. Trump's foes pointing to statistics showing D.C.'s

00:04:36.700 crime problem is on a downward slope. Hillary Clinton writing on X, as you listen to an unhinged Trump

00:04:43.420 tried to justify deploying the National Guard in D.C., here's reality. Violent crime in D.C. is at a 30-year

00:04:50.720 low. CNN's Dana Bash using the story as an opportunity to bring up, what else, January 6th.

00:04:58.080 I think I should note that the most violent moment in recent history in D.C. was January 6th. And it was

00:05:06.220 an attack on the United States Capitol by a lot of people who were doing it in the name of Donald Trump.

00:05:11.340 And it included the people who were hurt, included members of law enforcement.

00:05:16.140 And of course, there's the race angle. MSNBC's Eugene Daniels asking D.C.'s Democrat

00:05:21.340 Mayor Muriel Bowser Sunday if Donald Trump was targeting the city due to its high minority population.

00:05:27.740 One of the things that we have seen over and over from the president, from his team,

00:05:32.460 you know, Stephen Miller saying it's like Baghdad and Ethiopia, they seem to hold their harshest 1.00

00:05:38.120 criticism sometimes for cities that are majority black and brown. Do you see that? And what do

00:05:43.060 you think that means? I think that I have been dealing kind of with this issue for a number of

00:05:51.020 years. It's kind of easy fodder on the campaign trail. But now we're talking about governing.

00:05:58.560 Mayor Bowser reacting Monday after President Trump's announcement, also pointing to stats that show crime

00:06:04.300 is down in the district, but affirming the city will comply with President Trump's orders while

00:06:09.640 appearing to take a shot at the president's characterization of her city.

00:06:13.240 This year, crime isn't just down from 2023. It's also down from 2019 before the pandemic.

00:06:23.540 And we're at a 30-year violent crime low. We're not satisfied. We haven't taken our foot off the gas.

00:06:34.180 And we continue to look for ways to make our city safer. The Home Rule Charter requires the mayor to

00:06:41.920 provide the services of MPD during special conditions of an emergency. And we will follow the law.

00:06:51.060 And while this action today is unsettling and unprecedented, I can't say that given some of the rhetoric

00:06:59.700 of the past, that we're totally surprised. Attorney General Bondi calling newly confirmed U.S.

00:07:06.400 Attorney for the District of Columbia, Janine Pirro, the administration's secret weapon in combating D.C.

00:07:12.380 crime. Judge Pirro appearing on ABC to push back on claims that the nation's capital does not need help

00:07:18.620 to combat crime. There is a crime emergency in D.C. And, you know, people say, well, you know,

00:07:25.540 crime is down from last year. Well, so what? Last year, crime was too high. You know, we had the fourth

00:07:32.080 largest, highest homicide rate in the nation. I mean, so let's stop, you know, Namby-Pamby-ing this. 1.00

00:07:38.460 What we've got in this great city, and the president has a constitutional obligation

00:07:43.460 to make sure that this city is safe. And he is doing just that by today deploying the National

00:07:50.680 Guard and making sure that there is enough armed forces, I should say enough forces with the DEA,

00:07:57.700 the FBI, the ATF, the National Guard, to make sure that we send a message to young people and

00:08:03.980 criminals throughout the district that we are watching you, that it's not going to be the same

00:08:08.960 old, same old, that we are taking crime seriously. NBC News' Washington affiliate reported last month

00:08:15.760 that a D.C. police commander had been suspended and was under investigation for changing crime

00:08:21.640 statistics in a way that made the city appear less dangerous, allegations he denies. D.C. Police

00:08:28.420 Union Chairman Greg Pemberton announcing his union's support for President Trump's plan,

00:08:33.740 saying in a statement, quote,

00:08:34.800 We stand with the president in recognizing that Washington, D.C. cannot continue on this trajectory.

00:08:41.100 Crime is out of control, and our officers are stretched beyond their limits. For President

00:08:46.540 Trump, it's not just about crime. It's about cleanliness and the image of the capital city.

00:08:52.060 And we're getting rid of the slums, too. We have slums here. We're getting rid of them. I know it's 1.00

00:08:55.860 not politically correct. You'll say, oh, so terrible. No, we're getting rid of the slums where they live. 1.00

00:09:01.460 We're going to be removing homeless encampments from all over our parks, our beautiful,

00:09:07.380 beautiful parks, which now a lot of people can't walk on. They've been very, very dirty,

00:09:13.400 very, got a lot of problems. But we've already started that. We're moving the encampments

00:09:18.900 away, trying to take care of people. You know, my father always used to tell me, I had a wonderful

00:09:23.940 father, very smart. And he used to say, son, when you walk into a restaurant and you see a dirty front

00:09:30.300 door, don't go in. Because if the front door is dirty, the kitchen's dirty also. Same thing with

00:09:36.460 the Capitol. If our Capitol's dirty, our whole country is dirty. And they don't respect us.

00:09:43.860 Coming up, President Trump gives a preview of what to expect at his Alaska summit with Vladimir Putin

00:09:49.260 and insults fly in New York City's mayoral election, with Andrew Cuomo unveiling his Zoran's Law.

00:10:01.580 Have you ever heard of Karoluma? It's an edible cactus. Yes, edible cactus that grows in India,

00:10:08.340 and it can be a natural appetite suppressant. Now you're paying attention. Karoluma is just one of

00:10:13.720 the natural ingredients doctors added to a weight loss supplement called Lean. If you have a bold

00:10:19.400 summer weight loss goal, but injections are not for you, here's what the doctors who formulated Lean

00:10:24.520 have to say. They say this supplement is close to the benefits of those popular injections. Like

00:10:31.640 injections, Lean was created to help maintain healthy blood sugar and help control appetite and cravings.

00:10:37.040 But those who created Lean say the rare ingredients in Lean are also designed to help burn fat by converting

00:10:43.240 fat into energy. And of course, no needles. They say it's a healthier way to lose weight by capturing

00:10:50.540 the power of natural ingredients. Give it a try with 20% off by using the code MK20 at TakeLean.com.

00:10:59.120 That's code MK20 at TakeLean.com. These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not

00:11:05.620 intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease, and is not a substitute or alternative for

00:11:10.840 care from a health care provider. President Trump set to meet with his Russian counterpart Vladimir

00:11:18.140 Putin in Alaska this Friday to discuss the war in Ukraine. There are still no details about the event,

00:11:24.760 including timing or where exactly in the state it will take place. But President Trump revealing to

00:11:30.040 Reporters Monday what he plans to say to President Putin. So I'm going in to speak to Vladimir Putin and I'm

00:11:38.440 going to be telling him, you got to end this war, you got to end it. And he wasn't going to mess with

00:11:43.480 me. He was, this war would have never happened. You know, we had a discussion about it one time and

00:11:48.720 we never had that discussion again. Would have never happened. This could end up in a third world 1.00

00:11:52.900 war. This could have been a third world war. I don't think that's going to happen now. But I thought it 1.00

00:11:57.060 was very respectful that the president of Russia is coming to our country as opposed to us going to his

00:12:04.520 country or even a third party place. But I think we'll have constructive conversations.

00:12:10.080 Mr. Trump saying a deal will involve some sort of land swapping.

00:12:14.780 There'll be some land swapping going on. I know that through Russia and through conversations with

00:12:21.000 everybody to the good for the good of Ukraine. Good stuff, not bad stuff. Also some bad stuff for

00:12:27.960 both. So it's good and there's bad. But it's very complex because you have lines that are very

00:12:33.340 uneven. And there'll be some swapping. There'll be some changes in land. And the word that they

00:12:40.660 will use is, you know, they make changes. We're going to change the lines, the battle lines.

00:12:45.740 Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has previously insisted his country would not trade

00:12:50.660 land for peace. President Trump did not directly answer a question about whether Zelensky would be

00:12:56.140 invited to Alaska, but revealed that there are plans for Presidents Putin and Zelensky to meet with one

00:13:02.700 another at a future summit that may or may not involve President Trump. The next meeting will be

00:13:08.500 with Zelensky and Putin or Zelensky and Putin and me. I'll be there if they need. But I want to have a

00:13:14.980 meeting set up between the two leaders. Mr. Trump also revealing he will communicate with Zelensky and

00:13:20.920 European leaders soon after the Alaska summit concludes. So I'm going to go and see the

00:13:26.500 parameters. Now I may leave and say, good luck. And that'll be the end. I may say this, this is not

00:13:32.600 going to be settled. I mean, there are those that believe that Putin wanted all of Ukraine. I happen 1.00

00:13:37.300 to be one of them, by the way. I think if it weren't for me, he would not be even talking to anybody else

00:13:41.860 right now. But I'm going to meet with him. We're going to see what the parameters are. I'm then going to

00:13:46.640 call up President Zelensky and the European leaders right after the meeting. And I'm going

00:13:51.220 to tell him what kind of a deal. I'm not going to make a deal. It's not up to me to make a deal.

00:13:55.280 I think a deal should be made for both. President Trump adding Monday that he will know very early

00:14:00.120 in his conversation with Mr. Putin if an agreement can be reached, as only he can. Well, we're going to

00:14:06.080 have a meeting with Vladimir Putin. And at the end of that meeting, probably in the first two minutes,

00:14:10.440 I'll know exactly whether or not a deal can be made. Because that's what I do. I make deals.

00:14:16.640 The New York City mayoral race heating up ahead of November's election, with former New York

00:14:23.260 Governor Andrew Cuomo attacking Democratic primary winner and socialist Zoram Mamdani for living in

00:14:28.980 a rent-stabilized apartment. Mamdani, who makes $142,000 a year as a state assemblyman and who is

00:14:37.060 the son of a movie director mother and a Columbia professor father, lives in a $2,300 a month

00:14:44.280 one-bedroom apartment in Queens, an amazing deal by New York City standards. Former Governor Cuomo saying

00:14:51.040 he's proposing Zoran's law that would prevent wealthy New Yorkers from living in rent-stabilized

00:14:57.280 apartments in a video that went viral on X.

00:14:59.900 Rent-stabilized units when they're vacant should only be rented to people who need

00:15:06.520 affordable housing, not people like Zoran Mamdani. You don't need to be renting rent-stabilized

00:15:12.900 units to wealthy people. Otherwise, what you're doing is you're abusing the system. I'm going to

00:15:18.820 propose not rent that apartment by law except to a person who actually needs affordable housing.

00:15:26.400 And I'm going to call it Zoran's law because it's an abuse of the system. 0.92

00:15:31.200 Mr. Cuomo not offering specifics on the law other than it would create a, quote,

00:15:35.680 means test for rent-stabilized apartments. Mamdani responding Monday.

00:15:40.620 What do we know about this policy proposal beyond the fact that it seeks to evict me from my apartment?

00:15:46.900 Like so much of Andrew Cuomo's politics, it is characterized by a petty vindictiveness.

00:15:52.260 What Andrew Cuomo is proposing, be it the rent control he cited, the rent stabilization he intends

00:16:00.980 to speak about, is in many ways reflective of the fact that I live rent-free in his head.

00:16:05.960 Between now and November, you can expect a whole lot more of this from one man who stares dreamily

00:16:12.000 at communist China and another who stares amorously only at himself. Okay, that's just my opinion.

00:16:18.760 It's not fact. Well, it was kind of factual. It's pretty factual. We report, you decide.

00:16:25.800 And that'll do it for your AM update. I'm Megan Kelly. Join me back here for The Megan Kelly Show,
