The Megyn Kelly Show - Trump’s Cartel Crackdown Offer, Possible Alcatraz Reopening, Antarctic Ice Increases： AM Update 5⧸6

00:00:00.000 Good morning, everyone. I'm Megan Kelly. It's Tuesday, May 6th, 2025. And this is your AM

00:00:08.580 Update. If Mexico wanted help with the cartels, we would be honored to go in and do it.

00:00:13.600 President Trump confirms Mexico declined his offer of direct U.S. military support against

00:00:19.060 the cartels for now. But the offer, he says, still stands. Hundreds of thousands of football

00:00:25.340 fans will travel all across our country to cheer them on in person. President Trump takes

00:00:31.200 questions at an event announcing the 2027 NFL Draft, sounding off on everything from Pope

00:00:37.200 Trump memes to self-deportation payouts and a shocking report on Antarctica. Could climate

00:00:44.100 change be reversing? All that and more coming up in just a moment on your AM Update.

00:00:48.660 If you haven't heard about Riverbend Ranch, listen up. They have just introduced their

00:00:58.140 Riverbend Ranch steaks to the marketplace, and you need to try them. Riverbend Ranch raises

00:01:05.000 their own beef on beautiful mountain meadows only a few miles from West Yellowstone. Unlike

00:01:10.840 most ranches, Riverbend Ranch never uses growth hormones or antibiotics. They treat their animals

00:01:16.920 humanely and with respect. There are advantages of buying directly from the ranch. They can track

00:01:22.360 the health of every animal from the day it is born and can guarantee that it has been healthy

00:01:26.800 every day of its life. Riverbend Ranch has its own state-of-the-art processing facility on the ranch

00:01:33.140 that has received several national awards as one of the best in the U.S. But most importantly is the

00:01:38.980 quality of the beef. They age their beef to perfection for 21 days. You simply cannot buy beef like this

00:01:45.600 in a grocery store. You cannot. Ship directly from the ranch to your home, you get a much better price

00:01:50.940 than going through the middlemen. Order directly from riverbendranch.com and use promo code MEGAN

00:01:57.720 to get $20 off your first order. That's riverbendranch.com, code MEGAN. And be prepared. Once you taste it,

00:02:15.640 President Trump on Sunday confirming an offer to deploy U.S. troops to assist Mexico in fighting

00:02:21.280 drug cartels on Mexican soil.

00:02:23.600 It's true. They are horrible people that have been killing people left and right 0.99

00:02:28.360 that have been. They've made a fortune on selling drugs and destroying our people. We lost 300,000 0.99

00:02:34.540 people last year. Two-fifth and all in drugs. They're bad news. Yeah, that's true. If Mexico wanted 0.84

00:02:41.440 help with the cartels, we would be honored to go in and do it. I told her that I would be honored to go

00:02:46.980 in and do it. So if she said that I offered to do that, she's 100 percent right.

00:02:50.720 How are you disappointed that she denied that? Well, she's so afraid of the cartels,

00:02:55.600 she can't walk. So, you know, that's the reason. And I think she's a lovely woman.

00:03:00.140 But the president of Mexico is a lovely woman. But she is so afraid of the cartels that she 1.00

00:03:05.900 can't even think straight. According to the Wall Street Journal,

00:03:08.500 President Trump made the offer on a phone call with Mexican President Claudia Scheinbaum

00:03:12.820 on April 16th. President Scheinbaum rejecting the offer as a matter of national sovereignty.

00:03:18.580 On Saturday, the Mexican president responding to the report at a press conference.

00:03:24.600 In one of the calls, U.S. President Donald Trump said it was important for the U.S. Army to enter

00:03:30.960 Mexico to help us in the fight against drug trafficking. And you know what I told him?

00:03:38.900 No, President Trump. The territory is sacrosanct. Sovereignty is sacrosanct. Sovereignty is not

00:03:47.300 for sale. We can work together, but you can do it in your territory. We can do it in ours.

00:03:53.280 We can share information, but we will never accept the presence of the U.S. Army in our territory.

00:04:00.040 In February, President Trump invoking emergency powers to implement additional tariffs on Mexico

00:04:05.280 until its government stepped up in the war against fentanyl and illegal immigration.

00:04:10.360 The New York Times' The Daily podcast reporting in early March,

00:04:13.980 the tariffs had an immediate impact on cartel fentanyl production.

00:04:17.780 Even though I was really skeptical, I wanted to go back into a lab to see whether all of these

00:04:26.220 threats had led to real changes. What did you find?

00:04:29.700 It was really remarkable. The dynamics, it seemed, had completely changed from the last time we were

00:04:37.620 there. But when we started talking to our cartel contacts, they told us there was basically no

00:04:43.300 production of fentanyl happening in the city. It had totally plummeted.

00:04:49.100 In the months since, the Mexican government increasing cooperation with the Trump administration.

00:04:53.400 President Scheinbaum deploying 10,000 Mexican National Guard troops to the nearly 2,000-mile

00:04:58.940 U.S.-Mexico border. Troops patrolling the area for signs of traffickers and smugglers.

00:05:04.720 In February, NBC reporting one patrol discovering, quote, a large, sophisticated tunnel just feet

00:05:10.260 from El Paso, Texas. It measured four by six feet across with a complete lighting and ventilation system.

00:05:16.860 Also in February, the Mexican government handing over 29 imprisoned drug bosses.

00:05:21.660 Wanted in the U.S. on charges relating to racketeering, drug trafficking, murder,

00:05:26.660 illegal use of firearms, money laundering, and more. Mexican officials also stepping up efforts

00:05:31.900 within their own country to crack down on cartels. The Associated Press reporting in April,

00:05:37.500 Mexico's security chief quietly forming an elite force to take on the cartels. Quote,

00:05:42.620 the unit began to form shortly after Scheinbaum took office, and it hopes to have 800 members by the

00:05:48.020 end of the year, according to one federal official. For now, Mexico drawing a firm line against U.S.

00:05:53.560 pressure, but the Trump administration is making one thing clear. The U.S. is ready to act.

00:06:00.840 On Sunday, President Trump shaking up the news cycle with a pair of surprise announcements,

00:06:06.020 the potential reopening of Alcatraz prison and a 100 percent tariff on foreign films.

00:06:11.480 President Trump posting to Truth Social, quote, rebuild and open Alcatraz. Today,

00:06:16.640 I am directing the Bureau of Prisons, together with the Department of Justice, FBI, and Homeland

00:06:21.180 Security, to reopen a substantially enlarged and rebuilt Alcatraz to house America's most ruthless

00:06:27.920 and violent offenders. We will no longer be held hostage to criminals, thugs, and judges that are

00:06:32.840 afraid to do their job and allow us to remove criminals who came into our country illegally. 0.99

00:06:37.840 The Trump administration growing increasingly frustrated with legal roadblocks stalling its

00:06:43.100 mass deportation agenda. Moves President Trump argues illegally interfere with his authority to

00:06:48.380 enforce immigration law. President Trump telling reporters on the White House lawn the idea to

00:06:53.280 reopen Alcatraz was inspired by the many legal challenges. Where did you get the idea for

00:06:59.060 reopening Alcatraz? Just an idea I've had, and I guess because the judges, so many of these radicalized

00:07:05.740 judges, they want to have trials for every single, think of it, every single person that's in our

00:07:12.280 country illegally that came in illegally, that would mean millions of trials, and it's just so

00:07:17.560 ridiculous what's happening. It's long been a symbol, Alcatraz. A sad symbol, but it's a symbol of

00:07:24.720 law and order. You know, it's got quite a history, frankly. So I think we're going to do that, and we're

00:07:29.420 looking at it right now. Alcatraz Island was converted from a military facility to a federal prison back in

00:07:35.120 1934. In that time, it housed some of America's most notorious criminals, including Al Capone and

00:07:41.660 James Whitey Bulger. The Rocky Island, located just over a mile from the San Francisco shore,

00:07:47.520 considered inescapable due to the freezing water and deadly currents. Dozens attempted escape,

00:07:52.720 though only three men evaded recapture. They were never found, and it's unknown if they survived the

00:07:58.320 swim from the infamous island or drowned. Ultimately, the prison was shut down in 1963 due to increasing

00:08:05.060 operating costs and the need for repairs. Even some non-Trump-hating legal experts had

00:08:11.440 questions about the practicality of Alcatraz. Here's Greg Jarrett on Fox.

00:08:16.400 It's a provocative idea, Brian, which may be why Trump is proposing it. So the sound you hear

00:08:22.180 are all the liberal heads exploding at the same time. It is, however, federal property. So this can be done,

00:08:30.260 but it'd have to be rebuilt almost entirely. It's so outdated and crumbling. And here's the important

00:08:36.200 part. It has landmark status. So there would be an avalanche of lawsuits that would probably tie it

00:08:43.120 up for years. In a second surprise Sunday announcement, President Trump writing on True

00:08:47.080 Social, quote, the movie industry in America is dying a very fast death. Other countries are offering

00:08:52.660 all sorts of incentives to draw our filmmakers and studios away from the United States.

00:08:56.880 Hollywood and many other areas within the USA are being devastated. Therefore, I am authorizing

00:09:02.680 the Department of Commerce and the U.S. Trade Representative to immediately begin the process of

00:09:07.280 instituting a 100 percent tariff on any and all movies coming into our country that are produced in

00:09:13.120 foreign lands. We want movies made in America again. The president elaborating Sunday on the White

00:09:19.500 House Salon. Other nations have been stealing the movies, the movie making capabilities from the 0.98

00:09:26.900 United States. There have been some very strong research over the last week. And we're making

00:09:32.440 very few movies now. Hollywood is being destroyed. Now, you have an incompetent, grossly incompetent

00:09:38.180 governor that allowed that to happen. So I'm not just blaming other nations, but other nations, 0.93

00:09:43.580 a lot of them, have stolen our movie industry. And I'm saying, if they're not willing to make a movie

00:09:49.520 inside the United States, then we should have a tariff on movies that come in. And not only that,

00:09:55.900 governments are actually giving big money. I mean, they're supporting them financially. So that's sort

00:10:01.140 of a threat to our country, in a sense. And it's been a very popular thing. I can tell you what,

00:10:07.680 the movie makers love it. Democrat Governor of California, Gavin Newsom, facing growing criticism

00:10:13.380 from within the entertainment industry for not only failing to incentivize movie making in Hollywood,

00:10:19.160 but for making it entirely cost prohibitive. Critics say the governor is failing to keep Hollywood

00:10:23.920 competitive with other countries. The dissatisfaction recently aired on a podcast hosted by actor Rob Lowe,

00:10:29.840 featuring Severn star Adam Scott. It's cheaper to bring a hundred American people to Ireland than to

00:10:37.300 walk across the lot. Right. Fox. Right. Past the sound stages and do it there. Crazy. Do you think

00:10:43.360 if we shot Parks right now, we would be in Budapest? 100% we would be. We'd be in Budapest. We would be.

00:10:49.020 It's so weird. There's nothing shoots in Los Angeles. Nothing. I'm not just too expensive to shoot here.

00:10:54.840 There are no tax credits. So like all those other places are offering 40%. Yeah. 40%. Yeah. And then

00:11:02.620 on top of that, there's other stuff that they do. Yeah. And then that's not even talking about the union

00:11:08.940 stuff. That's just tax economics of it all. So it's it's it's it's criminal. What what what the

00:11:16.100 California and L.A. have let happen. It's criminal. Everybody should be fired. Exact details on how a

00:11:21.900 tariff on productions will be assessed or enforced. Not yet known. Coming up, President Trump weighs in

00:11:28.240 on the 2027 NFL draft, the Pope meme and on self deportation incentives. Plus, new data out of

00:11:36.180 Antarctica flips the climate change narrative. Tax day may have passed, but for millions of Americans,

00:11:46.740 the real trouble is just beginning. If you miss the April 15th deadline or still owe back taxes,

00:11:52.300 the IRS is ramping up enforcement and every day you wait might make things worse. With over 5000 new tax

00:11:58.900 liens filed daily and tools like property seizures, bank levies and wage garnishments, you don't want to

00:12:04.520 mess around. OK, the good news is there's still time for Tax Network USA to help self-employed or a

00:12:46.360 President Trump on Monday bringing NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to the White House,

00:12:50.700 signaling a new chapter in their otherwise contentious history to announce the 2027 host

00:12:56.140 city for the NFL draft. I'm pleased to reveal that the 2027 NFL draft, that's a big thing,

00:13:04.380 will be held right here in our nation's capital, Washington, D.C. on the National Mall.

00:13:11.000 Every year, hundreds of young football players have their dreams come true as the NFL teams across

00:13:16.960 the land. And you just saw that last week, select the best young players in America to join their

00:13:22.180 ranks. Hundreds of thousands of football fans will travel all across our country to cheer them on in

00:13:29.320 person. President Trump also inviting to the podium a longtime political adversary, D.C. Mayor Muriel

00:13:35.060 Bowser, who once painted Black Lives Matter in bold yellow letters on the street leading to the White House

00:13:40.160 in direct protest of his presidency. Thanks, I'm Muriel Bowser. I'm the mayor of the best city in the

00:13:45.880 world and also the sports capital. And we are delighted to be here, to be here with the Washington

00:13:53.500 commanders, the NFL and the president to talk about this very exciting announcement. We're just

00:13:59.780 delighted to be here and we want to thank everybody for all the hard work to get here. The president,

00:14:05.060 estimating more than one million football fans, will turn up to the National Mall to watch the

00:14:09.600 draft in person. The 2026 draft will take place in Pittsburgh. Following official remarks, the

00:14:15.260 president opening the floor to questions. One reporter asking about an AI-generated image posted to the

00:14:20.880 president's Truth Social account, portraying Mr. Trump as the new pope. Critics slamming the image as

00:14:26.340 offensive and in poor taste. Supporters, including many Catholics, dismissed the outrage as overblown or

00:14:32.560 fake, pointing instead to what they see as far more serious attacks on the faith during the Biden

00:14:37.120 and Obama years. President Trump responding. Some Catholics were not so happy about the image of you

00:14:44.020 looking like the pope. Oh, I see. You mean they can't take a joke. You don't mean the Catholics. 0.99

00:14:49.600 You mean the fake news media. Not the Catholics loved it. I just saw it last evening. Actually,

00:14:56.920 my wife thought it was cute. She said, isn't that nice? Actually, I would not be able to be married,

00:15:03.120 though. That would be a lot. I'd have to, to the best of my knowledge, popes aren't big on

00:15:08.840 getting married, are they? Not that we know of, no. Even though it was AI-generated, it was a joke,

00:15:15.200 it was a meme. Does it at all diminish the substance of the official White House account to have it go out

00:15:21.200 Give me a break. It was just, somebody did it in fun. It's fine. You have to have a little fun,

00:15:28.980 don't you? On a more serious note, President Trump weighing in on a new DHS program encouraging

00:15:34.340 illegal immigrants to self-deport. First reported by Fox, the plan offers to cover travel costs and

00:15:40.720 promises an additional $1,000 once the individual is confirmed to have left the country.

00:15:45.500 We're being obstructed. It's very unfair what's happening because the court system is being,

00:15:51.240 it's very unfair. We have to get them out fast. But what we thought we'd do is a self-deport

00:15:55.900 where we're going to pay each one a certain amount of money, and we're going to get them a beautiful

00:16:01.900 flight back to where they came from, and they have a period of time. And if they make it, we're going

00:16:07.860 to work with them so that maybe someday, with a little work, they can come back in if they're good

00:16:12.820 people. If they miss that limit, they're going to be taken out of our country, and they will never

00:16:18.740 get a path to come back in, and it'll be a much tougher process. According to DHS, the program is

00:16:24.680 expected to save taxpayers up to 70% compared to the cost of traditional deportation. There's alarming

00:16:31.280 new evidence out today showing once again the dramatic impact of climate change. Scientists warn that

00:16:37.280 a large part of Antarctica is melting and cannot be stopped. Without stronger climate action,

00:16:44.700 Antarctic ice will continue to melt at an accelerating rate. News for Greta Turnberg,

00:16:50.260 a new peer-reviewed study published in partnership with one of the world's top scientific publishers,

00:16:55.820 finds for the first time in decades the Antarctic ice sheet gained mass. Ice sheets store two-thirds

00:17:03.420 of the planet's freshwater. They act as sort of water towers, storing water as frozen ice that

00:17:09.040 would otherwise be in our oceans. Earth currently has two ice sheets, one in Antarctica and one in

00:17:15.240 Greenland. As they melt, they have contributed to rising oceans. The research is based on satellite

00:17:20.540 data from 2002 to 2023, published in Science China Earth Sciences. Researchers found from 2002 to 2010,

00:17:29.800 melting ice in Antarctica, melting ice in Antarctica contributed to about 0.2 millimeters per year

00:17:35.740 in global sea level rise. That rate doubled from 2011 to 2020, increasing the rise in sea levels by

00:17:42.940 0.4 millimeters per year. However, the trend flipped dramatically from 2020 to 2023, increased snowfall

00:17:51.860 in East Antarctica, which led to an accumulation of snow and ice, offsetting rising sea levels by about

00:17:59.580 0.3 millimeters per year. A relatively small increase, but a new record nonetheless. Four major glacier

00:18:07.640 basins, which had been losing the most mass, instead experienced mass gain, reversing losses they had

00:18:14.380 suffered. While scientists caution it's too soon to call it a trend, the recent gains suggest Antarctica may

00:18:21.000 be more resilient or more influenced by natural cycles than we've been led to believe. That'll do it for
