00:03:48.640 relationship and that if it is mishandled, the two countries could have, quote,

00:03:53.380 clashes or even conflicts. Beijing claiming Taiwan, a small island nation off its coast,

00:03:59.400 as part of China, while Taiwan operates as its own self-governing democracy.

00:04:05.320 For decades, the U.S. walking a careful line on Taiwan, maintaining unofficial ties with the

00:04:10.300 island, supporting its ability to defend itself, and publicly opposing any attempt by China to

00:04:16.220 take it by force. Washington does not formally recognize Taiwan as an independent country,

00:04:21.760 but it does supply Taiwan with weapons. The U.S. approach, known as strategic ambiguity,

00:04:28.240 leaving unclear exactly how far Washington would go to defend Taiwan in an effort to deter China

00:04:34.280 from invading without encouraging Taiwan to formally declare its independence.

00:04:39.840 After the U.S.-China meeting, Secretary of State Marco Rubio telling NBC

00:04:48.460 From our perspective, any forced change in the status quo and the situation that's there now would be bad for both countries.
