00:00:00.000 Good morning, everyone. I'm Megan Kelly. It's Friday, March 7th, 2025, and this is your AM

00:00:08.320 Update. We just weren't treated right. We were ripped off as a country. I've been saying

00:00:12.880 it for a long time. President Trump temporarily pausing some tariffs on Mexico, but promising

00:00:18.000 the relief stops for every country come April 2nd. China publicly challenges Trump's tariff

00:00:23.860 threats, but what's really happening behind the scenes? So that's easy to call out, the

00:00:27.960 unfairness of that. California Governor Gavin Newsom breaking ranks with Democrats, calling

00:00:32.620 boys and girls sports unfair. Is the sudden dose of common sense a sign of larger political ambitions?

00:00:40.000 Texas Congressman Al Green censured for his outburst, but that's not the end of the story.

00:00:45.260 Dozens of other Democrats now at risk of losing their committee assignments.

00:00:49.720 All that and more coming up in just a moment on your AM Update.

00:01:59.620 President Trump pausing some tariffs on Mexico until April 2nd, when reciprocal tariffs kick in for

00:02:05.540 everyone. All Mexican goods under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement, signed under the first Trump

00:02:11.240 administration to replace NAFTA, granted reprieve. President Trump posting to Truth Social, quote,

00:02:17.740 I did this as an accommodation and out of respect for President Scheinbaum. Our relationship has been

00:02:23.560 a very good one, and we are working hard together on the border, both in terms of stopping illegal aliens 1.00

00:02:29.160 from entering the United States and likewise stopping fentanyl. The market's continuing to slide in reaction to

00:02:35.700 the back and forth actions. President Trump reacting to the market drop from the Oval.

00:02:40.380 Well, a lot of them are globalist countries and companies that won't be doing as well because

00:02:46.160 we're taking back things that have been taken from us many years ago. We've been treated very

00:02:52.680 unfairly as a country. We protect everybody. We do everything for all these countries. And a lot of

00:02:59.720 these are globalist in nature. You know, if you're outside of the United States, it's going to be a

00:03:05.540 little bit different. We just weren't treated right. We were ripped off as a country. I've been

00:03:10.040 saying it for a long time. Democrats highly critical of the tariffs, arguing the economic

00:03:14.880 uncertainty is harming their constituents. His tariffs on allies like Canada will raise prices on

00:03:20.760 energy, lumber and cars. Average American families can expect that these Trump tariffs are going to cost

00:03:26.460 them about two thousand dollars annually. So considering the president ran on a platform of

00:03:32.080 bringing down costs, he seems to be doing exactly the opposite. Trump started this. This is not only

00:03:37.720 going to put, you know, pain and suffering for Canadian families. It's also going to be for 0.58

00:03:42.140 Minnesota families and families all across the United States. Public support for tariffs falling along

00:03:47.220 party lines. An Economist YouGov poll showing 68 percent of Republicans support a 25 percent tariff on

00:03:53.880 Mexico versus only 11 percent of Democrats. On CNBC, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick pressed about the

00:04:01.780 seemingly chaotic thinking of the White House. First, the tariffs were announced, then paused, then

00:04:07.180 implemented, now paused again in some capacity. Are you unsure of what President Trump wants?

00:04:13.000 I speak to him all the time. You've got to be kidding me. The president knows exactly what he wants.

00:04:18.800 We know exactly what he wants. And our job is to try to execute exactly what he wants.

00:04:23.300 You communicated fully with your counterparts in Mexico and Canada, for example, exactly what the

00:04:28.380 president wants, I assume. Like yesterday and the day before yesterday. Of course. Like, come on.

00:04:35.880 Mr. Lutnick telling NBC this month it's all about fentanyl. But beginning April 2nd, attention turns to

00:04:41.720 busting down trade barriers throughout the world, especially with China. At the Economic Club of New York,

00:04:48.520 Treasury Secretary Scott Besson laying out the fuller strategy with President Trump's upcoming tariff

00:04:53.600 wars. I know it's what President Trump believes. He believes three things. One, that it is a good

00:05:00.560 source of revenues. Two, it protects our important industries and the employees. And three, he's added

00:05:08.300 the third leg to the stool and he uses it for negotiating. The popular argument against the Trump tariffs,

00:05:13.920 even from right-wing economists, is there are attacks on American consumers and increased costs

00:05:20.180 on American businesses. Economist Vance Ginn, who worked in the OMB in the first Trump administration,

00:05:26.460 writing in the Courier-Journal, quote,

00:05:27.960 A trade deficit is not a sign of economic weakness. It reflects strong capital inflows and consumer

00:05:34.460 purchasing power. Trying to fix it with tariffs only distorts markets and raises costs.

00:05:40.480 President Trump argues that global free trade doesn't really exist because countries like

00:05:45.500 China, with authoritarian governments, don't play fair. More from Secretary Besson.

00:05:50.460 We can accumulate all of the strategic mineral deposits that we need, but China still processes

00:05:58.360 85 percent, does 85 percent of the processing. And every time a plant, every time a private sector

00:06:06.340 company tries to stand up a processing facility outside of China, China drops their prices and puts them

00:06:14.320 out of business. Right. There are several in the United States that are just sitting idle because the

00:06:21.020 Chinese saw what was happening and dropped it, and that's unacceptable. The U.S. is the largest 1.00

00:06:26.600 importer in the world, purchasing 4.1 trillion worth of goods and services last year from

00:06:32.100 everywhere else. Mr. Trump believes the U.S. can leverage that massive purchasing power to force

00:06:37.840 other countries to bend to his will. Americans have a lot of money to spend. If you want access

00:06:43.220 to this market, you either deal with a tariff or build your factory here. Secretary Lutnik spells it

00:06:49.240 out on CNBC. If you want to buy things from other countries and you want to bring it into America,

00:06:56.040 then the price is going to rise. But if you make it here, then of course the price won't rise. So

00:07:02.340 make it here. Apple builds it all in China. Why are they building it all in China and giving us our 0.67

00:07:08.800 iPhone? Why don't they make it here? Wages are lower over there. And now there are robots who can do it.

00:07:15.880 You're going to see robotic production of iPhones and the jobs that are going to be created. These are

00:07:22.900 great, high-paying jobs. And you don't need a college education to do it. This is the recreation

00:07:29.080 of tradecraft in the United States of America. And Donald Trump is on it. He's bringing it back.

00:07:35.760 Publicly, the Chinese are responding to tariff threats with bravado. A Chinese foreign ministry

00:07:40.620 spokesman saying late Tuesday, if war is what the U.S. wants, be it a tariff war, a trade war, or any other

00:07:47.540 type of war, we're ready to fight to the end. The Wall Street Journal reporting behind the scenes,

00:07:53.420 China's worried they can't win a trade war. The Journal writing, quote, the vision haunting Xi is

00:07:59.280 one where China finds itself cut off by trade restrictions and sanctions, suffering Soviet-style

00:08:05.320 isolation with fewer outlets for its goods and limited access to crucial technologies. China's

00:08:11.740 economy depends on U.S. demand. Last year, the U.S. imported $439 billion worth of goods from China,

00:08:18.120 one of their top sources of revenue. Losing that access would not just hurt, it could destabilize

00:08:24.200 China's economic foundation. And that's what President Trump is gambling on. Coming up,

00:08:30.220 California Governor Gavin Newsom bucks his party and actually agrees that biological males playing

00:08:35.780 against girls in sports is unfair. What? What's behind this sudden dose of common sense?

00:08:42.780 And the censure of Texas Congressman Al Green may only be the start of the fallout resulting from his

00:08:48.100 outburst at President Trump's joint address. You might have heard about the new brand called XXXY

00:08:55.980 Athletics. They're the only athletic brand that is standing up for women's sports. It was founded by

00:09:00.860 former elite gymnast and longtime Levi's executive Jennifer Say. Jennifer was the first

00:09:05.480 gymnast to speak out about the abuse in women's gymnastics. And then she pushed back on lockdowns 1.00

00:09:10.740 and closed schools during COVID. And for that, she was canceled by corporate America. So she started

00:09:15.700 her own brand, XXXY Athletics. And this is the only athletic brand that actually knows men cannot

00:09:20.560 become women. Amazing. And the fight is not over, folks. The brand's not a gimmick. They make world-class

00:09:25.800 products, including super soft sweats and performance wear, including leggings and workout tees that

00:09:31.200 hold up to the toughest workouts. Go to thetruthfits.com to check it out. Use the code MK20

00:09:47.660 California Governor Gavin Newsom breaking ranks with fellow Democrats on the debate over transgender

00:09:56.120 participation in sports. The governor, joined by conservative Turning Point USA founder Charlie

00:10:01.320 Kirk in the first episode of his new podcast, weighing in on the issue.

00:10:05.760 Would you do something like that? Would you say no men in female sports? 1.00

00:10:08.460 Well, I think it's an issue of fairness. I completely agree with you on that. So that's easy to call out,

00:10:12.760 the unfairness of that. The governor's policies when it comes to so-called trans children have

00:10:17.840 been downright radical. Last week, every single Senate Democrat voted against advancing the

00:10:23.820 Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, a bill banning men's participation in women's sports.

00:10:29.540 A January New York Times poll shows 70% of Democrats are against allowing biological males

00:10:35.880 into women's leagues. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who also voted against the bill,

00:10:41.000 stumbled in his response to Governor Newsom's new stance.

00:10:45.120 I want to ask about California Governor Gavin Newsom's comments saying that Democrats were in the

00:10:51.500 wrong for allowing transgender athletes to compete in female and girls' sports. 1.00

00:10:56.340 What is your response to that after Democrats had opposed the women and girls in sports?

00:11:00.480 I haven't seen his comments. What Democrats opposed was unleashing sexual predators

00:11:11.280 on girls throughout the United States of America.

00:11:16.040 Reaction from Governor Newsom's fellow Democrats ranging from anger to disappointment.

00:11:20.820 A joint statement from the leaders of the California Assembly and State Senate LGBTQ

00:11:25.080 caucus saying, quote, we woke up profoundly sickened and frustrated by these remarks.

00:11:30.620 It's not the first time in recent weeks the governor rejected far-left policies.

00:11:34.740 In February, Mr. Newsom vowed to veto a bill banning California prisons from cooperating with ICE.

00:11:40.960 The moderate pivot, leaving many suspicious that Governor Newsom

00:11:44.580 is eyeing a title bump come 2028.

00:11:47.700 Democrat congressman from Texas, Al Green, officially censured by the House of Representatives

00:11:55.800 for his outburst during President Trump's joint address.

00:12:00.000 Ten Democrats joining with Republicans to reprimand the congressman in a final vote of 224 to 198.

00:12:08.040 Just ten Democrats.

00:12:10.620 Once the censure resolution is passed, the offending party is to stand before the chamber

00:12:14.720 while the resolution is read.

00:12:17.420 A group of several dozen Dems staging a protest of their own.

00:12:22.060 Representative Al Green, be censured with public reading of this resolution by the Speaker.

00:12:36.980 The House had come to order. The House had come to order.

00:12:41.240 That cacophony drowning out Speaker Johnson, an attempt at singing the civil rights anthem,

00:12:47.740 We Shall Overcome.

00:12:49.980 Congressman Green standing front and center, waving his cane like a conductor.

00:12:54.860 Speaker Johnson banging the gavel multiple times, eventually forced to call a recess.

00:12:59.460 In response, Republican congressman from Tennessee, Andy Ogles,

00:13:03.560 filing a resolution to remove participating Democrats from their committee assignments.

00:13:08.100 Mr. Ogles posting on X, quote,

00:13:09.800 If you want to act like a child in the halls of Congress, you will be treated like a child.

00:13:14.500 The House Freedom Caucus filing a similar resolution against Congressman Green,

00:13:18.820 seeking to oust him from his committee assignments as well.

00:13:22.320 A vote on that is expected next week.

00:13:24.480 The Speaker has not yet commented.

00:13:29.660 Liberal darling Lin-Manuel Miranda pulling musical Hamilton from its upcoming run at the Kennedy Center.

00:13:35.760 The move comes in response to President Trump's dismissal of the entire board

00:13:39.700 and his naming of staunch ally Rick Grinnell as its interim executive director.

00:13:45.060 Mr. Grinnell tasked with ensuring the Kennedy Center promotes values aligning with the America First vision.

00:13:51.140 Mr. Miranda, along with lead producer Jeffrey Seller, telling the New York Times the show must not go on.

00:13:57.200 Mr. Seller, stating, quote,

00:13:59.240 It became untenable for us to participate in an organization that had become so deeply politicized.

00:14:04.980 The Kennedy Center, opening in 1971 to serve as the National Cultural Center of the U.S.

00:14:10.820 In 2024, there were at least three drag events hosted in the space.

00:14:16.460 In 2019, the center named Mark Bamuthi Joseph, Vice President and Artistic Director of Social Impact.

00:14:23.440 In 2017, prior to that appointment, the Kennedy Center commissioned Mr. Joseph to write the play Pelota.

00:14:30.280 The Boston Globe called that show, quote,

00:14:32.300 A poetic and impassioned meditation on race, on racism, and on the experience of immigration.

00:14:39.440 Rick Grinnell, responding to Lin-Manuel Miranda on X, quote,

00:14:42.940 This is a publicity stunt that will backfire.

00:14:45.680 It's clear he and Seller don't want Republicans going to their shows.
