00:00:52.740 spontaneous blessing, but not a blessing that is, quote, liturgical or resembles marriage.

00:00:58.460 No, quote, clothes, gestures, or words that are proper to a wedding can be included so as to,

00:01:05.160 quote, avoid any form of confusion or scandal.

00:01:08.500 The blessings cannot be connected in any way to civil unions and, quote,

00:01:12.880 rites and prayers that could create confusion between what constitutes a marriage,

00:01:16.420 which is the exclusive, stable, and indissoluble union between a man and a woman,

00:01:22.120 naturally open to the generation of children.

00:01:25.340 So, no.

00:01:27.100 Now, the church did not approve the blessing of same-sex unions, exactly.

00:01:33.740 And yet, some liberal priests, including one media-savvy Jesuit in particular who's inordinately

00:01:40.000 obsessed with weird sex stuff, has celebrated the document as, quote, a major step forward

00:01:45.880 and mocked the notion advocated by conservatives that nothing had changed.

00:01:49.880 So, what does this mean?

00:01:52.080 It means, I'm sorry to say, just about whatever you want it to mean.

00:01:57.240 It means that the Vatican has not officially approved blessings for same-sex unions,

00:02:01.960 as many are reporting, but it also means something else.

00:02:05.320 Something that affects not just Catholics, not just professing Christians broadly, but everyone.

00:02:11.320 It means, this is why I even bring up the story, it means that weaponized ambiguity will cause scandal.

00:05:25.720 It's kind of like the Bill Clinton political strategy.

00:05:28.960 And I'm not accusing anyone in the Vatican of intentionally undertaking this strategy,

00:05:33.040 but this is how it's being perceived by a lot of people.

00:05:36.680 The Bill Clinton strategy of you go into a room with 100 people,

00:05:39.820 all of whom disagree,

00:05:40.940 and everyone leaves the room thinking that Bill Clinton agrees with them.

00:05:44.700 Barack Obama had a similar strategy.

00:05:46.480 Go into a room, everyone disagrees,

00:05:48.100 and yet everyone thinks, oh, that guy's on my side.

00:05:50.100 That guy agrees with me.

00:05:52.660 People with wildly different views on marriage,

00:05:56.220 the fundamental political unit,

00:05:59.080 And they're going to think, oh, the church agrees with me.

00:06:02.560 Fairly or unfairly.

00:06:04.040 But that kind of ambiguity is going to be weaponized.

00:06:08.040 And it's going to cause scandal regarding the fundamental political institution.

00:06:14.000 Now, speaking of holy questions,

00:06:15.460 turning to a completely different matter,

00:06:17.600 there is a very disturbing claim coming out of the war in Israel.

00:06:21.840 And the claim is that the IDF, the Israeli army,

00:06:27.380 shot an elderly Christian woman and her daughter

00:06:31.300 on the grounds of a parish, the Holy Family Parish, on Saturday.

00:06:37.120 There's also a claim that a rocket, at least one,

00:06:40.460 fired from an Israeli tank struck a nun's convent,

00:06:45.380 a convent actually for the order that was founded by Mother Teresa.

00:06:49.620 So this is obviously a very disturbing allegation,

00:06:52.260 but it's the fog of war.

00:06:53.480 So who knows if it's true?

00:06:55.300 We hear these sorts of claims.

00:06:56.780 Sometimes it's propaganda coming from Hamas.

00:06:59.040 We hear these sorts of claims.

00:07:00.500 Sometimes they're credible.

00:07:01.520 In this case, the claim is coming from a credible person.

00:07:04.800 That would be the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem.

00:07:06.640 This is the highest ranking official,

00:07:09.860 Catholic official in the Holy Land.

00:07:11.680 It's an office that was established in the 11th century.

00:07:14.540 So what happened?

00:07:15.900 Well, the IDF now is denying it.

00:07:17.660 The IDF is saying that they are refuting the claim

00:07:21.860 that it had targeted a Catholic parish in the Gaza Strip.

00:07:27.220 They are stressing that the IDF, quote,

00:07:29.760 does not target civilians no matter their religion.

00:07:33.180 They say that they spoke with church representatives

00:07:36.420 about an incident in the Holy Family Parish,

00:07:38.500 but, quote, no reports of a hit on the church,

00:07:41.960 nor civilians being injured or killed,

00:07:43.780 were raised during this phone call

00:07:47.040 that they had with church officials.

00:07:49.880 And then the IDF says,

00:07:50.820 a review of the IDF's operational findings support this.

00:07:52.980 The IDF takes claims regarding harm to sensitive sites

00:07:55.120 with the utmost seriousness,

00:07:56.320 especially churches considering that Christian communities

00:07:58.840 are a minority group in the Middle East.

00:08:00.240 Okay, I don't like this denial

00:08:02.060 because notice they're not exactly denying it.

00:08:06.580 Notice the language.

00:08:07.660 The language here is very, very precise.

00:08:09.780 The IDF is saying they didn't target a Catholic parish.

00:08:13.520 Well, okay, they might not have targeted the parish,

00:08:15.800 but they might have accidentally shot these people.

00:08:19.220 I mean, the IDF just admitted

00:08:20.180 to accidentally killing Israeli hostages

00:08:22.860 that were being held by Hamas.

00:08:28.200 I'm not saying these things are not understandable in any way.

00:08:32.700 It's the fog of war and accidents happen.

00:08:34.440 That's why we have clinical terms that are so ghastly,

00:08:36.720 but terms like collateral damage or, you know,

00:08:40.580 bad and accidental things happen in war.

00:08:43.500 The IDF is not denying, it seems to me,

00:08:46.000 that a bad and accidental thing happened.

00:08:47.800 They're just saying we don't target it.

00:08:49.760 We don't target civilians, no matter their religion.

00:08:55.360 but they were contacted by church representatives

00:08:57.640 about an incident in the parish.

00:08:59.380 Well, what does that mean?

00:09:05.600 would have called the IDF about an incident in the parish

00:09:08.540 if that did not pertain to some kind of hit on the church,

00:09:13.000 unless the IDF is drawing a very fine distinction here

00:09:15.820 between the church and the parish.

00:09:17.960 Maybe it were some other building.

00:09:19.180 Maybe it were a convent.

00:09:20.760 Maybe it were a dormitory.

00:09:23.360 but this distinction seems to me to be a little too precise

00:09:31.800 And then you have to deal with the IDF's first statement.

00:09:36.340 When the IDF first came out here, they said,

00:09:38.320 an initial review suggests that IDF troops

00:09:40.380 who were operating against Hamas,

00:09:42.540 terrorists in the area,

00:09:43.820 operated against a threat that they identified

00:09:45.780 in the area of the church.

00:09:47.200 The IDF is conducting a thorough review of the incident.

00:09:49.080 So initially, the IDF seems to admit

00:09:51.820 that they were conducting some kind of operation around here.

00:09:55.040 And the operation could even have been justified

00:09:57.800 to say, well, we were going after Hamas terrorists

00:09:59.620 and we just got it wrong. 0.56

00:10:01.640 We just, we thought we were killing Hamas terrorists. 0.60

00:10:03.340 We killed two innocent Christians, civilians, 1.00

00:10:05.560 who were just taking shelter.

00:10:08.800 But whatever this denial is, it is not sufficient.

00:10:15.680 Seems very weak.

00:10:19.180 not coming from some, you know, Hamas media outlet,

00:10:22.080 not coming from some Islamist news organization,

00:10:25.800 but it's coming from the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem

00:10:28.320 that has a fair bit of credibility, let's say.

00:10:31.620 The IDF needs to answer for this.

00:10:33.960 Not just in the name of justice,

00:10:39.660 The IDF, the State of Israel,

00:10:41.320 should take this incident very, very seriously.

00:10:45.660 if for no other reason than out of self-interest.

00:10:49.060 If you are a supporter of the State of Israel,

00:10:55.540 in an answer for this incident.
