00:06:40.320 of wish I saw it in IMAX. Also, it's not the Odyssey. There are these woke elements to it,

00:06:46.160 very overtly woke elements that make me wonder if Christopher Nolan is not merely depicting

00:06:51.200 Odysseus, but actually channeling his inner Odysseus? Is he being a little wily? Is he being

00:06:55.980 a little crafty here in the ways that he's playing on the Hollywood rules of DEI, especially when it

00:07:03.140 comes to the Academy Awards? But beyond that, the moment of the Odyssey that has probably

00:07:09.500 attracted the most attention for the wokeness or the DEI is the casting of this trans-identifying

00:07:14.980 actress Ellen Page to play a man. And she plays this character Sinon. And it was initially rumored

00:07:22.160 that Ellen Page played Achilles. But then you find out she's playing this character Sinon.

00:07:26.520 And what's interesting is that Sinon doesn't appear in the Odyssey. Achilles does appear in

00:07:30.820 the Odyssey. Sinon does not appear in the Odyssey. Sinon comes from a later Latin poem, Virgil's

00:07:36.260 Aeneid. And then you see Sinon through the later Western tradition. You see Sinon in Dante,

00:07:41.360 also Odysseus. You see him in Dante too. You see Sinon, references to Sinon in Shakespeare and so

00:07:47.120 forth. So what this tells you is that Christopher Nolan is reading the Odyssey through a later

00:07:54.820 Western tradition. But what's interesting about the rumors that Ellen Page was playing Achilles

00:07:59.960 is that the Sinon character that Christopher Nolan inserts into the Odyssey in crucial ways

00:08:06.960 fulfills the Achilles character. And notably, this comes, a little bit of a spoiler alert,

00:08:11.880 in the scene from Hades. Odysseus goes down to Hades, and in the poem, he talks to Achilles.

00:08:17.660 And he tries to comfort Achilles about his death. And Achilles says, don't comfort me about my

00:08:21.680 death. There is no comfort in death, which is a very Greek pagan view of death. Death is always

00:08:27.780 worse than life, and all the people in the land of the dead are just looking up to the land of the

00:08:31.320 living. And that speech, Christopher Nolan takes out of the mouth of Achilles and puts into the

00:08:36.600 mouth of Sinon, which I think is part of why those rumors started to float around. It's very

00:21:47.040 like a true patriot, just ate it at that time because he felt it would be too damaging to

00:21:51.620 the country to challenge the election, especially during the Cold War. So he ate it, but he may have

00:21:56.320 had that election stolen from him. And what it really goes back to is that when Richard Nixon

00:22:01.720 was a congressman, he nailed Alger Hiss. He nailed this communist who was in the State Department.

00:22:08.760 We hear about McCarthyism and the House Un-American Activities Committee,

00:22:14.480 HUAC, as its detractors call it. And we hear about the Red Scare and all of this. But

00:22:21.620 In fact, there were communists who had infiltrated the U.S. government.

00:22:24.740 They worked at very, very high levels, including Alger Hiss, who was at such a high level in the State Department, he helped found the United Nations. 0.62

00:22:30.540 Alger Hiss was a communist spy, and he was ratted on by his former comrade, Whitaker Chambers, who was this communist who became disillusioned with communism, became a Quaker. 0.63

00:28:43.140 different ingredients that go into the conservative movement. There's this concerted effort right now

00:28:49.160 to try to take J.D. Vance down a peg. And some people are getting really angry about it. Some

00:28:56.000 people are getting very frustrated. I take it as a fait accompli. This is just part of politics.

00:29:00.240 It is simply a fact that many of, if not most of, the most strident voices against J.D. Vance right now were, 10 years ago, the most strident voices against Trump.

00:31:05.800 Trump, because Trump wanted the nomination again, his lane, his only real base of support

00:31:11.720 were the people who didn't like Trump. So you had this immediate paradox of the campaign.

00:31:17.360 Really, it's just a contradiction. DeSantis, at his best, was the next evolution of Trump.

00:31:25.460 But the people who would support a candidate over Trump in 2024 were the guys who hated the first

00:32:32.080 lane. You could see that shaping up, but it's basically all going to be contingent

00:32:48.320 think Vance is the guy. You saw this just within the last few days with Barack Obama,

00:32:54.120 not only going after Vance, but attacking him in the nastiest, ugliest, most nauseous of ways.
