00:04:18.080 get involved in such assorted crimes such as this?

00:04:27.960 really, really matter in our society.

00:04:32.640 especially at elite universities,

00:04:34.640 carry a ton of weight in the society.

00:04:37.760 They're incredibly valuable.

00:04:39.380 And so parents who want to give their kids a leg up

00:04:43.500 to get their kids in there.

00:04:45.900 there's a flip side to this,

00:05:26.360 And even then, it's very hard to get in.

00:05:29.840 it's a lot easier to stay in.

00:05:34.380 it's still hard, I guess, to get an A.

00:05:36.460 But to get an A minus or a B plus is pretty easy.

00:06:10.420 They were able to stay in them.

00:06:20.360 So there are a lot of questions that are raised.

00:06:24.820 is it just these kids?

00:06:26.360 I don't think it's just these kids who cheated.

00:06:30.700 against the meritocratic college system we have.

00:06:33.140 What about athletes?

00:06:34.460 One way, actually,

00:06:35.680 that these kids were cheating to get in

00:06:37.360 is that the parents would pay these consultants

00:06:40.160 to bribe coaches

00:06:41.880 at all of these elite universities.

00:06:43.800 the coaches would pretend

00:06:45.880 that they were recruiting the kids for athletics.

00:06:48.320 They'd pocket the money

00:06:49.380 or they'd give the money

00:06:50.140 to the school's athletic program.

00:06:51.740 Then the kids would get to the school

00:06:53.180 and then all of a sudden

00:06:54.660 they would drop out of the sport.

00:06:56.560 Because at these elite universities,

00:06:58.160 you don't actually have to play the sport

00:07:01.000 I remember this from Yale.

00:07:02.000 I had a good friend at Yale.

00:07:02.940 He was recruited for football.

00:07:04.740 He comes over to Yale

00:07:05.680 and he decides he wants to

00:07:10.000 He wants to really devote all of his time

00:07:11.640 to classics and to thinking.

00:07:13.640 I guess it's sort of the opposite of this scam.

00:07:15.600 It's the opposite of these kids.

00:07:16.720 He actually wanted to become

00:07:17.520 much more academically rigorous.

00:07:19.340 So I think his freshman year,

00:07:20.560 he quit the football team.

00:07:21.720 Doesn't matter.

00:07:22.420 Because at these elite schools,

00:07:23.980 your scholarship,

00:07:26.020 your whatever,

00:07:26.480 is not tied to athletics.

00:07:29.280 So you get in for football or whatever.

00:07:32.240 They lower the academic standards for you.

00:07:33.980 And then you quit football immediately.

00:07:36.440 So, okay, that's one aspect of it.

00:07:38.500 But let's not also forget

00:08:03.300 How come that's not cheating,

00:08:04.840 but this is cheating?

00:08:08.620 it's because at least the rich people
