00:01:00.320 We brought our children for the first time.
00:01:02.780 We don't tell you anything.
00:01:03.940 Just let's go there and tell us afterwards your experience.
00:01:07.080 My two eldest daughters said,
00:01:09.120 lots of good-looking young men in the church.
00:01:11.280 Latin Mass is very attractive to young men.
00:01:13.500 Because the new Mass is girly. 1.00
00:01:16.060 It's effeminate.
00:01:17.020 it feels trivial and it feels weak. Is that too harsh?
00:01:24.260 An Austrian and an American walk into a studio and all we want to talk about is Latin. I am
00:01:30.760 joined today by my friend, his imperial and royal highness, Edward of Austria, who you've met before
00:01:38.040 when we had Edward Habsburg on to talk about his previous book, The Habsburg Way. And now
00:01:42.500 he is on to talk about, dare I say, an even more exciting subject, the traditional Latin Mass.
00:01:49.580 Edward, thank you for being here. Thank you for hosting me.
00:01:53.040 So I tell the audience a lot about how much I love the Latin Mass. You obviously are quite a
00:01:58.940 devotee of the Latin Mass. You've had some real firsthand experience around the Holy See as the
00:02:03.260 Hungarian ambassador to the Holy See. Congratulations on your retirement after 10 years of service.
00:02:08.920 The question that I get from the people who are a little curious, they say,
00:02:14.780 why would I want to go to church in Latin?
00:02:18.480 Why is it so important that I go hear the Mass in Latin? 0.97
00:02:22.660 Why do you weird trads care so much about this dead language? 0.99
00:02:28.080 What say you?
00:02:29.360 Well, that's a long story.
00:02:32.060 But the short version is because this is the liturgy that all our ancestors, all the great saints of the church from Gregory the Great via St. Teresa of Avila, via all the great saints celebrated liturgy in this form.
00:02:51.240 And I have to say, I understand the sentiment.
00:02:54.500 Why should I go to a Latin mass?
00:02:56.540 I don't even understand what the priest says.
00:02:59.120 And because I, for 50 years, just went to our normal Mass today, and I grew up in this.
00:03:07.120 I loved today's Mass.
00:03:09.040 It shaped me.
00:03:09.820 It made me the Catholic I am today. 0.99
00:03:12.360 And twice I stumbled into a Latin Mass, and that was both times rather catastrophic because
00:03:20.600 I went in there without preparation, without explanation, and without an idea what I'm going 0.94
00:03:29.000 to experience. And I came out afterwards that this is the weirdest, I'm not going to say the
00:03:34.680 word, that I'd ever experienced in a church, never again. Because it's funny you say that.
00:03:41.120 A lot of people, myself included, will say we were raised in the modern liturgy. Sometimes it has
00:03:46.480 acoustic guitars and all kinds of craziness and but then when we found the latin mass i said this
00:03:52.640 is it this is it i'm home it clicked instantly i loved it you walk in and you say actually you
00:03:58.380 know what this is totally nuts and i have no use for it yes i think that the majority of people
00:04:02.520 at least in western europe where i live would react my way but i hear stories of people walking
00:04:10.100 into one of these things and being blown away and saying that's it i never experienced it that way
00:04:15.760 for me, I tried it twice and I said, never again. Because it's very alien. It presses different
00:04:23.740 buttons on your senses, in your ears, in your eyes. The priest looks away from you. You see
00:04:31.140 mostly his back. He moves in a very ritualized way, like on rails. He has no choice, no improvisation.
00:04:39.520 He never turns to you and says, the Lord be with you.
00:04:43.640 Right.
00:04:44.040 But it's all in Latin and away from you. 0.97
00:04:45.860 So it's alien. 0.97
00:04:47.280 In a way, a friend once said, it's like if you have your walk in a park
00:04:52.140 and then somebody takes you and puts you on the surface of the moon
00:04:55.220 and says, have you walk here?
00:04:56.960 So it can be very alien.
00:04:59.500 And today's mass has sort of programmed us to expect a certain set of impressions,
00:05:06.420 experiences sounds and smells when you go to liturgy and in the Latin mass some of these
00:05:12.620 things are very different so there is a lot of silence there is a lot of silence in fact
00:05:18.300 when I finally found my way to the Latin mass while I was in Rome as ambassador and kicking
00:05:24.760 and screaming because my wife said let's check that out and I said oh no no no no you won't drag 0.98
00:05:30.900 me through those crazy treads no way no more trouble i don't want that and so i still went
00:05:36.860 and i remember i was in my first latin mass desperately trying to read along in the little
00:05:41.900 brochure i had with a text and not understanding which part of the mass i was in and then came the
00:05:48.060 holy holy the sanctus and then suddenly there was silence and the silence endured and endured it was
00:05:58.340 like a like an oasis of total silence and i saw the priest was doing something on the altar he was
00:06:04.220 working there was a book he was silence silence says you're not used to silence in today's mass
00:06:10.420 because once you've experienced the latin mass and you go back to today's mass which i regularly
00:06:15.160 still go to today's mass too and you notice how well filled it is between answering and singing
00:06:22.920 and reacting and you're busy all the time in the latin mass there is long stretches where the
00:06:29.720 silence almost presses on your ears and then in the middle of that oasis of silence there was the
00:06:36.220 consecration and it was very devout and it was very beautiful and then the silence continued it
00:06:42.180 was that was one of those moments where i said oh what is this and then i i was curious and then
00:06:51.640 a priest offered me to serve as an altar boy at his latin mass in the morning at 6 30 at a side
00:06:58.400 altar and i said i can handle that i've been altar boy all my life boy was that a humiliating
00:07:05.280 experience because you know serving as an altar boy in today's mass is you do three things you
00:07:11.580 stand around then you bring water and wine then you ring bells and then you walk out again
00:07:16.160 Latin mass altar boy is very complex you have to know a whole set of prayers you have to know a
00:07:23.780 set of moves you have to know which side of the altar to stand and but doing that I understood
00:07:30.500 the liturgy better and then we brought our children for the first time and it was very
00:07:37.660 interesting we said we don't tell you anything all of them they were all of them in Rome said
00:07:42.840 just let's go there and and tell us afterwards your experience what what did you think of it
00:07:49.300 yeah the young one said it's in latin it's very long it's very reverent different things
00:07:55.800 my two eldest daughters said lots of good-looking young men in the church
00:08:01.040 you laugh but we are used to young men out of the church after communion or latest after
00:08:10.980 after confirmation. Latin Mass is very attractive to young men. Yes. I still haven't figured out
00:08:17.360 why, but it is. Because the new Mass, not intrinsically perhaps, but as it is practiced
00:08:24.200 at many parishes, is girly. It's effeminate, it's saccharine, it's sappy, it feels trivial,
00:08:31.080 and it feels weak. Now, I'm not saying it has to be that way, but there have been deformations
00:08:37.480 in the implementation to the liturgical reform
00:08:40.300 that have, I think, been unfortunate
00:08:43.700 for the whole lay faithful,
00:08:45.220 but which have been particularly rough on men.
00:08:49.500 And it has helped to drive men out of the church.
00:08:52.180 Is that too harsh?
00:08:53.420 No, I think it's harsh.
00:08:54.540 I'm a diplomat.
00:08:55.260 I would say things differently.
00:08:57.040 But I suppose these temptations exist.
00:09:00.480 But what you feel is that
00:09:01.860 if young people go to the church today,
00:09:04.940 or as we know,
00:09:05.840 a lot of them find their way back into the Catholic Church.
00:09:09.620 There is a whole number of baptisms, confirmations these years.
00:09:16.320 Yes.
00:09:16.900 Then they will find their way to a more traditional liturgy.
00:09:20.980 Doesn't have to be traditional Latin Mass.
00:09:23.060 Can be reverent new Mass.
00:09:25.880 But young people today look for something real and reverent.
00:09:30.080 And some of them find it, I mean, as we're speaking in these days,
00:09:34.560 is going to be the Chartres pilgrimage.
00:09:36.960 This year, it's 200,000 young people walking
00:09:39.880 from Paris to Chartres to have a Latin mass.
00:09:43.040 200,000 young people walking.
00:09:46.340 It gives you an idea that it's going to play a role
00:09:49.120 in the future of the church.
00:09:51.880 But yeah, that was my experience.
00:09:53.820 I was really surprised by it.
00:09:55.720 Even down to just the way the priest is facing,
00:09:59.440 because we think from the perspective of new liturgy
00:10:02.320 after the Vatican Council and after the liturgical reform, we say, well, the priest faces us.
00:10:08.900 Exactly.
00:10:09.420 And then at the Old Mass, he's facing away from us. You say, well, what if we are not the center
00:10:14.500 point of the Mass? Yes.
00:10:15.980 You know, in the Old Liturgy, the priest didn't think of himself as facing away from the people.
00:10:19.840 He thought of himself as facing toward the altar. That is to say, facing God.
00:10:23.420 Yes.
00:10:23.860 Who's really, truly present. And I think for, especially for the young men who are a little
00:10:29.680 less emotional sometimes, or a little less swayed by emotion. We want to be grounded in objective
00:10:35.260 realities. I think there's this recognition that in the seriousness of the old liturgy,
00:10:41.820 where the priest is at work, and the altar boys are at work, that it feels as though we're really
00:10:47.900 doing something here together, that this is real. Whereas even when you just have the priest
00:10:52.600 facing you, it feels as though you are there to be entertained. And if I'm going to be entertained,
00:10:58.160 I watch the Yankees. That's what I watch to be entertained. And the Yankees are great. They're
00:11:01.680 very entertaining. I'll go listen to music. I'll go watch a movie. In other words, if I am going
00:11:08.660 to mass, I want to feel as though we're really doing something rather than just spending time
00:11:16.080 like we do throughout the entire week, which is amusing ourselves. Yes. And Catholic liturgy can
00:11:20.640 never compete with really great entertainment outside if it's not the real deal. And the real 0.98
00:11:26.960 deal is attractive i think it's one of the only moments where young people have total silence for
00:11:32.380 over an hour yes in their lives because you're entertained from the morning to the evening you
00:11:36.860 switch on your phone before you switch on your light and you switch on your off your phone when
00:11:41.160 you switch off the light in the evening and in between you're constantly checking there's always
00:11:45.120 noise noise noise noise the traditional liturgy is very quiet over long stretches and you can pray
00:11:51.420 It's impressive.
00:11:52.780 So my idea in writing that book,
00:11:55.080 Discovering the Latin Mass,
00:11:56.880 was to give people a little travel guide,
00:12:01.080 a little hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy
00:12:02.840 that gives you, opens the door,
00:12:06.340 takes away the prejudice,
00:12:08.220 gives you, explains you what you're going to see there,
00:12:11.480 how to behave, where to find a Latin Mass.
00:12:14.580 Because, you know, not everybody publishes, announces
00:12:17.520 when he says Latin Mass
00:12:19.300 due to certain restrictions over the last years.
00:12:22.840 So you just have to find one first, and then...
00:12:25.400 It's crazy. It feels like the catacombs sometimes.
00:12:27.800 Not to be grandiose about it, but I was traveling.
00:12:30.800 I won't say where, because I don't want to get them in trouble.
00:12:33.780 But I was asking around for the young people
00:12:36.980 who were attracted to the traditional mass.
00:12:39.080 I said, hey, I'm going to be in town with my family.
00:12:41.480 Where can I get the TLM? Where can I get the goods?
00:12:45.740 They looked around.
00:12:46.480 Yeah, make sure no one's listening.
00:12:48.660 And they said, well, it's at this church at this time.
00:12:52.080 By the way, it's not on the website.
00:12:53.220 It's not listed.
00:12:54.120 I email the church.
00:12:55.220 I say, hey, I'm going to be in town with this.
00:12:58.040 And their responses are so caged.
00:13:01.040 They say, well, yes, the diocese will be celebrating the extraordinary form of this.
00:13:06.280 You know, as if, you know, heaven forfend a bishop were to see this.
00:13:10.860 So what's the deal?
00:13:11.820 Why are the bishops, why have some recent popes been so, Francis really,
00:13:17.160 Why have they been so harsh on the traditional liturgy?
00:13:21.640 Well, I think it's a historical problem.
00:13:26.220 I think many of the elderly clerics brought a lot of prejudice against the Latin mass from their youth.
00:13:36.680 And I think with Francis there must have been some sort of bad experiences.
00:13:42.200 And I think many of today's bishops and the people they consecrated,
00:13:48.480 the founding myth of their youth and their priesthood was
00:13:51.420 that Vatican II is going to be the real beginning.
00:13:55.520 This is a blooming springtime of the Church, a thing of beauty.
00:14:00.400 And therefore, today, the new Mass is the greatest thing in the world.
00:14:04.340 And that old thing has finally been put on the dunghill of history.
00:14:08.740 and we can finally march forward and really be relevant in today's world
00:14:12.480 and embrace the world as it is today.
00:14:15.380 And it must be difficult for people who have this frame of mind
00:14:18.940 to see young people going back to exactly that liturgy that you thought
00:14:23.660 was history, ancient history.
00:14:26.360 So there are some, I think, biographical, historical aggressions.
00:14:31.300 And again, I'm trying to overcome these prejudices by writing that book
00:14:36.220 and by speaking about the Latin mass.
00:14:37.740 Because the other side, I have to say, is influencers on the internet who sometimes are freshly converted, sometimes have discovered tradition very recently.
00:14:51.080 And the first thing they do is they grab a microphone and speak about it.
00:14:54.960 And the second thing they do, they sometimes speak in a very judgmental and loud way, also probably in order to prove that they're really Catholic.
00:15:02.820 Yeah, yeah.
00:15:03.880 And that's not helpful.
00:15:05.120 No.
00:15:05.440 And that shapes the image of how traditional people are
00:15:09.440 because you just need a dad and a webcam
00:15:12.540 and you can do a lot of great things
00:15:14.760 and also a lot of damage.
00:15:16.160 Yes.
00:15:16.500 And the Catholic Church is a very sensitive field
00:15:19.560 where you have to cage your words
00:15:21.240 and have lots of respects for different.
00:15:23.100 If you're a cradle Catholic like me,
00:15:25.480 you know that the church goes from here to here.
00:15:28.480 We're all Catholic.
00:15:29.400 Even if I don't agree with someone on, we're Catholic.
00:15:33.120 And I think that's the problem.
00:15:34.660 So the impression that people get about the Latin mass is not from the families with children who, with full of fidelity, go every week and now have to travel sometimes four or five hours to get to a Latin mass because masses have been shut down in a diocese.
00:15:52.800 But their impression is those loud people on the internet.
00:15:56.180 I'm not talking about you, of course.
00:15:57.760 No, never me.
00:15:58.860 I would never be loud on the internet. 0.99
00:16:00.820 But I think you're totally right, which is when you go to the Latin mass,
00:16:05.680 the median age is about eight because everyone has a ton of children.
00:16:09.180 And even of the adults, the median age is probably 32 or something.
00:16:12.260 It's very, very young.
00:16:13.840 There are some people there, though, who have held firm even during the restrictions,
00:16:17.240 who are elderly, who were dedicated the whole time.
00:16:21.220 But the PR that the traditional Latin mass gets is in no small part
00:16:26.860 a handful of schizos on the internet who converted 37 seconds ago. And that's not helpful. So then
00:16:34.060 for the people who say, all right, I'm speaking to a serious person who's charitable, who has a
00:16:39.360 lot of experience with this, who was persuaded of the Latin mass, who didn't like it originally.
00:16:44.440 First objection, why does it have to be in Latin? Why can't you do, why can't you have the reverence
00:16:50.480 and the, you know, the priest facing the altar and the silence? Why does it have to be in Latin?
00:16:54.740 Why can't you just do that in English?
00:16:56.860 Because in the traditional Latin mass,
00:16:59.280 the language and the entire structure are deeply intertwined,
00:17:02.800 and this was the way it was done for the last 1,500 years.
00:17:05.940 It shaped all our ancestors.
00:17:07.520 I always like to say that when Charlemagne followed the mass in the year 800,
00:17:13.720 Latin was already an alien language for us.
00:17:16.040 We have this idea that everybody spoke colloquial Latin up until the 1960s.
00:17:20.500 But in reality, Charlemagne followed along and he tried to read along and tried to understand the Latin.
00:17:28.560 The idea is not, this must be immediately accessible.
00:17:31.320 The idea is, I brought an aunt for the first time to a Latin mass and she was furious.
00:17:37.420 And she said, but I don't understand what he's saying.
00:17:40.180 I can't follow the mass.
00:17:41.940 And I said to her, look at my daughters.
00:17:45.740 Do you have the impression that they can't follow the mass?
00:17:47.800 They had their book open.
00:17:49.060 They read along.
00:17:49.960 they prayed, they knell, they knew exactly where you were.
00:17:54.920 And I believe your soul is being shaped by the liturgy and by the language.
00:18:01.180 And if you follow the Latin Mass from your childhood, you will understand it.
00:18:05.960 It takes a while, but it's natural.
00:18:08.680 It goes into your bones.
00:18:11.120 You know, one key experience for me was, I live in Vienna.
00:18:16.040 There is a fantastic art museum, Kunsthistorisches.
00:18:19.120 and there is one painting in one of the rooms
00:18:24.360 where you see a church in the Netherlands in the 1600s.
00:18:31.780 And it's a typical interior of a church.
00:18:34.620 You see people standing in the foreground talking.
00:18:36.720 You see the whole perspective of the church.
00:18:39.040 In the background, there's an altar.
00:18:40.640 It's about that big.
00:18:43.100 A priest is saying mass, very far in the background.
00:18:46.280 from where he's standing you know exactly at what part of the mass you are i asked my children
00:18:52.260 which part of the mass and they said he is at the preparation of bread and wine at that time of the
00:19:00.160 mass and he's doing that gesture it's that small so what i say is the gestures and the language
00:19:05.540 of the Latin mass will get into your body and into your cells and it will shape you my my advice to
00:19:12.160 people who say but i don't understand it but this is different but why is it like this is like
00:19:16.960 perhaps god invites you to learn something new yeah something that shaped all the great saints
00:19:22.980 of church history perhaps god invites you to open yourself up and to to bow your head under
00:19:29.320 tradition and not just say does it please me if it pleases me it's good but it's like perhaps i
00:19:34.720 can learn something perhaps once god wants to find a new way to my heart that's what i would say
00:19:39.920 It strikes me that so many of the objections to the old mass are really actually objections to the
00:19:47.240 new mass. They're actually defenses of the old mass, as you're describing this, that you can
00:19:50.820 identify exactly where the mass was in this painting, just from the stance of the priest.
00:19:55.540 I think the whole idea was, we need to make the mass more accessible. So first of all,
00:20:00.220 as you say, even Charlemagne in the year 800, he didn't speak ecclesiastical Latin as his
00:20:06.040 normal tongue. So same is true for us today. We're in the same position. Good to be in the
00:20:11.340 same position as Charlemagne. But furthermore, I was in the Santa Maria Maggiore, the papal
00:20:18.240 basilica in Rome. I take my family there. We were in Rome for one night, and we go to mass.
00:20:24.080 And the mass was in Italian to be accessible to the people. How many people there actually
00:20:30.160 spoke Italian? This is Rome. This is a city full of tourists. I happen to speak Italian.
00:20:34.360 no one else in my family does. And so the kids are all sitting there. My wife's sitting there
00:20:39.480 nicely, but they couldn't understand a thing that's going on. Now, the irony is, had the
00:20:44.400 priest been speaking Latin, had the liturgy been the old Latin mass, no one would have spoken Latin
00:20:49.440 as their daily language. And every person from everywhere on earth would have known exactly what
00:20:54.960 was going on. And I think in the creed, we say, including many Protestants say, that we believe
00:21:03.000 in one holy Catholic and apostolic church. And some Protestants have redefinitions of the word
00:21:09.420 Catholic to try to make that fit. But we say, okay, one holy Catholic and apostolic church.
00:21:13.220 So the first mark of the church is unity. And the irony is that the result of making the mass
00:21:21.760 supposedly more acceptable is that you've totally destroyed liturgical unity. You could drop down
00:21:27.420 into the middle of Papua New Guinea, perhaps, before the reform. And you would have understood 0.65
00:21:32.940 the mass. It would have been almost the same as the mass in your hometown. Yes. And it's even more
00:21:38.060 when you begin to go to the Latin mass, you will consult your breviary, your missile, 0.66
00:21:44.640 your missile quite a lot. The longer you go, the less you will need it because all the rhythms and 0.97
00:21:51.620 all the words will will get closer to you and again i profoundly believe that this liturgy
00:21:57.760 shapes us it transforms us into what god wants us to be and that is sometimes new and painful
00:22:04.800 for people and it's but god wants you to grow god wants you to to get in deeper and again i will at
00:22:13.520 no point criticize the new mass because i i regularly go to the new mass too and i encounter
00:22:19.300 Christ there I did it all my life but this was like an old dog that learned a very new trick
00:22:26.940 and I have learned everything from Medjugorje via Opus Dei friends via Dominican friends via
00:22:34.120 I was for 10 years a charismatic I lifted my arms and I spoke in tongues so I'm not your typical
00:22:42.140 tread yeah and then i was totally surprised and overwhelmed by a new experience and uh
00:22:50.100 and that's for my entire family so i i can only suggest to people to try it out but before you
00:22:57.700 try it out read the little booklet the great thing is that sofia press is going to publish it
00:23:04.040 for free you just pay for the postage because i want many people to be able to read it
00:23:12.380 and it's a it's a very easy light introduction it's not this big brick of a book it's a
00:23:20.040 little booklet that tells you what you need to know to try it out and all the rest you will
00:23:26.300 learn on your own then so that's that's the idea of discovering the letter you know my very favorite
00:23:31.900 kind of book is a free book. And in fact, my reversion to Christianity came about in part
00:23:38.240 playing on my cheapness and my desire for free books because I was on campus in college and a
00:23:43.980 Protestant missionary type guy was giving away books, some books that I didn't care about,
00:23:48.800 but C.S. Lewis too. I said, oh, I should, maybe I should read that. I'd love a good free book.
00:23:52.340 And I took it. It really helped to transform my life. So this is very good. You can get it just
00:23:58.020 for postage. Unbelievable. You have to get it. It's discovering the Latin Mass. Before I let you
00:24:02.400 go, Edward, you've just retired as the ambassador to the Holy See. The previous Pope put some
00:24:09.840 restrictions on the Latin Mass. This Pope, I was very excited about this pontificate. In fact,
00:24:15.940 I called the name. I was hoping for the name Leo XIV. Now, we were talking about the schizophrenics
00:24:22.760 with Twitter accounts who decide to speak for the Catholic Church. All sorts of people are
00:24:27.580 babbling and making all sorts of claims about this pontificate. With your expert view, how do
00:24:33.980 you see the early days of Pope Leo's pontificate unfolding? Well, I have the privilege to have
00:24:40.380 spoken with him alone for four minutes when I left and had a few very short encounters with him
00:24:46.460 before. So I think I have an idea a bit what kind of man he is. The word I heard most around the
00:24:57.000 Holy See about him from people who work there is he's a just man. He's a very just man. He's someone
00:25:04.420 who is not rash, who doesn't shoot from the hip. He's someone who listens, who thinks. He's a man
00:25:12.000 of prayer. He has a great devotion to Our Lady. I know that he has a great devotion to Our Lady
00:25:17.700 of Pompeii. As you probably saw a few days ago, he went to Pompeii and he led the prayers in the
00:25:24.080 sanctuary of Pompeii. I think we're in good hands in the Catholic Church. I think he's a balanced
00:25:32.480 man. He has his political opinions, I think. We know he has siblings with other political
00:25:38.540 opinions, perhaps. That's true. But he's very nice. He's a reserved man. With Pope Francis,
00:25:48.080 when you threw him a joke he threw it back better with pope leo when you throw him a joke
00:25:56.540 he smiles and shakes your hand there is a reserve in him and he doesn't want to be your body
00:26:04.500 but i think the church is in extremely good hands and as for the latin mass i don't expect him to
00:26:13.880 be rash on that. He's going to listen to many sides. He's going to speak to many sides. He's
00:26:19.580 meeting with many different sides. And I'm full of hope for the church.
00:26:25.880 Very good. A good place to leave it. You need to go get your book. I thought I was going to tell
00:26:30.300 you to spend money and buy a book. And it would be worth spending the money too. I already pre-ordered
00:26:33.980 the book on Amazon. But you can even get it for free and just pay postage. That is how important
00:26:38.640 it is for you to avail yourself of this wonderful opportunity to rediscover the Latin Mass
00:26:43.500 in a book by Archduke Edward Habsburg. Edward, thank you for being here.
00:26:48.760 Thank you for having me.
