00:00:37.700 Being a mackerel-snapping papist, I rarely have the opportunity to encounter the woke Protestant pastors who sometimes make the rounds on social media.
00:00:48.180 Being an adult man, I very rarely see anything on TikTok.
00:00:51.940 I really only see it when my producers bring these videos to me.
00:00:55.520 Chill out, man.
00:00:57.260 What's your problem?
00:00:58.140 You! 0.99
00:00:58.640 You're my problem.
00:00:59.580 But my producer, Mr. Ben Davies, is a Protestant and frequently on TikTok. 0.98
00:01:04.240 So he has assured me I must listen to the brilliant theological musings of Reverend, Reverend...
00:01:13.220 I don't think so.
00:01:14.420 I don't think so.
00:01:15.360 Brandon Robertson, who is a noted author, activist, and public theologian, as opposed to those private theologians, working at the intersections of spirituality, sexuality, and social renewal.
00:01:28.280 He is known as the TikTok pastor.
00:01:30.840 He's garnered over 200,000 followers and 5 million views.
00:01:34.380 Now, speaking of religion, this video is brought to you by Hallow.

00:01:43.280 That is three months free at Hallow.com slash Knowles.
00:01:46.340 More from Hallow in just a bit.
00:01:47.760 Mr. Robertson, take it away.
00:01:49.200 Do you know that Jesus helped his friend come out?
00:01:51.400 So it's been like a year since I made this video where I used the story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead as a metaphor for Jesus calling LGBT people out of the closet.
00:02:01.360 And it's been one of my most new videos ever since.
00:02:04.460 Christians, of course, lost their minds saying, look at you taking that passage out of context. 0.99
00:02:08.620 That's not what the passage is about.
00:02:10.440 Of course, I don't believe the story was literally about Lazarus being gay and coming out of the closet.
00:02:15.220 But for thousands of years, Christians have used biblical stories as metaphors for other things in our life and in our world.
00:02:22.760 And I do firmly believe, based on the Bible, that Jesus wants to see LGBT people step into our full God-created identity as queer people.
00:02:33.280 Jesus wants to call us out of the man-made closets of shame and repression that so many who claim the name of Christ have forced us into.
00:02:41.520 To any LGBT person struggling with their faith. 0.97
00:02:43.860 Oh, he's a gay guy. 1.00
00:02:45.220 Jesus is calling you. 0.99
00:02:46.820 Oh, got it.
00:02:47.780 I didn't know that, but he says it's us, so I assume he's placing himself within the LGBT umbrella. 0.61
00:02:53.720 Gay, gay, gay, gay. 0.93
00:02:55.840 This is an amazing inversion because Christ raises Lazarus from the dead, and this prefigures Christ's own resurrection. 0.97
00:03:02.880 But what does Christ do in this episode with Lazarus?
00:03:06.200 Lazarus is dead, and then Christ brings him back to life.
00:03:10.200 What Pastor Brandon over here is suggesting, though, is that people go in the opposite direction.
00:03:15.880 Because Christ says if you sin, you are dead in sin.
00:03:18.780 The wages of sin are death.
00:03:20.580 And what Christ does is he frees us from our sin, which is death, and gives us life everlasting by embracing all sorts of disordered sexual behaviors.
00:03:28.800 One is going in entirely the opposite direction and pursuing what Christians have always considered to be sin.
00:03:35.060 So it's a devilish little inversion. 0.51
00:03:37.540 Because leftism is a false religion, and it apes all of the language of Christianity, and it apes even many of the rituals of Christianity, but it just distorts, perverts, and ultimately even inverts.
00:03:50.840 Go ahead. 0.53
00:03:52.020 Show me the chapter and verse, bro.
00:03:54.380 Go ahead.
00:03:55.000 Here's the thing.
00:03:55.780 You can comb through the thousands of verses of the Bible and find justification for anything you want to justify.
00:04:01.240 But that's an abuse of the scripture.
00:04:03.340 This ancient book does not have anything to say about modern medical procedures like abortion.
00:04:08.720 It doesn't condemn it, nor does it endorse it.
00:04:11.080 But what the Bible does do is give us principles, morals, overarching themes that we should apply to our thought around these conversations.
00:04:19.060 For instance, the Bible says every human being is made in the image and likeness of God, and therefore is worthy of dignity, equality, respect, and autonomy over our lives and over our bodies.
00:04:30.680 And that same dignity of God and autonomy should be extended to women to make choices about their bodies, their lives, and what they do. 0.99
00:04:39.440 Likewise, the Bible is not a medical text, so it doesn't tell us when life begins or when personhood begins.
00:04:44.960 Those are questions for science, not for scripture.
00:04:46.900 He knows that his argument is quite weak here, so he's not trying to twist scripture to defend his infanticide.
00:04:54.940 What he's saying is, listen, man, we just don't know.
00:04:58.440 Come on, enough of this Bible talk. 1.00
00:05:00.880 The Bible's just kind of, it leaves this issue alone.
00:05:03.800 But the Bible obviously doesn't leave this issue alone because the Bible tells us quite clearly in the Ten Commandments that thou shalt not commit murder. 0.99
00:05:10.780 Kill him.
00:05:11.800 I shouldn't. 0.98
00:05:12.820 We know that God loves the little children.
00:05:15.940 We know that Christ says whoever scandalizes a child, it would be better to have a millstone tied around his neck.
00:05:21.300 There's a hubris that comes along with these modern libs who think that everyone who ever came before them was a total dummy, and they didn't know anything about anything.
00:05:28.140 But no, they did.
00:05:28.780 People knew what babies were.
00:05:30.280 They knew what pregnancy was. 0.99
00:05:32.240 There were people who attempted to kill babies in the womb to end pregnancies long before Pastor Brandon ever came around.
00:05:39.040 And the church addressed this question from the very earliest centuries, and the church said, you can't do it.
00:05:45.660 And the church has been consistent on this point for 2,000 years.
00:05:50.580 And we see the reasoning for that in the Bible, and we can see the reasoning for that in the natural law and the objective moral order.
00:05:57.220 And we see it consistently for 2 millennia, no matter what Pastor Brandon says in the year of our Lord, 2023.

00:07:06.860 Despite your name calling, I'll answer your question.
00:07:09.720 There is not a single condemnation in all of the Bible of premarital sex.
00:07:16.440 There is a mistranslation in the New Testament of the Greek word porneia into the old English word fornication,
00:07:23.040 which does in fact mean premarital sex.
00:07:25.480 But if you look up the Greek word porneia, it does not neatly translate to fornication.
00:07:31.720 It's a mistranslation. 0.97
00:07:33.200 Porneia in Greek is what we would call a junk drawer word that means all sorts of sexual immorality.
00:07:39.140 And that category of what is sexually immoral is different based on what culture or values you have. 0.68
00:07:45.020 So there is no clear condemnation of premarital sex in the Bible.
00:07:48.160 Now, yes, I do believe lust is a sin.
00:07:50.560 Lust is when you objectify another person.
00:07:53.340 You strip them of their humanity and make them an object of your sexual gratification. 0.99
00:07:57.920 That is condemned in the Bible because the Bible tells us to treat every human with full dignity and respect.
00:08:03.900 So that is why lust is condemned.
00:08:06.380 This is the most coherent thing I've heard this guy say.
00:08:09.160 He points out that porneia is a difficult word to translate.
00:08:12.260 And it doesn't neatly translate into any specific sexual category that we use in English.
00:08:19.020 And that's true.
00:08:22.780 Now, he comes to the wrong conclusion.
00:08:24.560 He says, and because we know that sexual immorality is contingent on one's culture,
00:08:31.040 we know that today, presumably because our culture approves of premarital sex, 0.93
00:08:36.360 that premarital sex is not a sin.
00:08:37.580 That's where he goes wrong because sexual morality is not contingent on one's culture
00:08:42.720 or on one's own personal views, but it's objective.
00:08:45.760 It's established by God.
00:08:47.260 And so once we've figured that out, we realize that premarital sex is in fact immoral. 0.90
00:08:51.560 But then we can take it further, as Pastor Brandon is pointing out,
00:08:55.180 and say actually all sorts of sexual activities are immoral as well.
00:08:59.540 That sex has a purpose, just like our bodies have a purpose, like our marriages have a purpose.
00:09:02.780 When we twist those things away from their purpose or to undermine their purpose,
00:09:06.520 then things go awry.
00:09:08.680 Talk about twisting the Bible to fit your own agenda.
00:09:11.960 Jesus never said that marriage is between a man and a woman.
00:09:15.120 What you're referring to is a passage in which Jesus was asked a specific question about a specific-
00:09:20.500 About marriage.
00:09:21.920 He was asked by one of the teachers of the law if it was lawful for a man to divorce his wife.
00:09:28.000 He was asked a question about heterosexual marriage.
00:09:31.880 And he responds-
00:09:33.240 Also known as marriage.
00:09:34.300 About that heterosexual marriage. 0.92
00:09:35.940 He quotes from the book of Genesis and says,
00:09:37.880 A man must leave his father and mother and cling to his wife, and the two become one flesh. 0.99
00:09:42.720 Therefore, divorce is a sin.
00:09:46.180 Jesus was condemning the divorce of a heterosexual couple.
00:09:50.400 He was never asked about marriage between two people of the same gender.
00:09:54.480 Because that's not possible.
00:09:56.520 He kind of undermines his own point here because he says,
00:10:03.800 What Christ is referring to can be seen in the book of Genesis
00:10:06.820 when marriage is described as the union between a man and a woman.
00:10:10.420 Oh, whoops, I wasn't supposed to say that one.
00:10:11.920 Jesus was asked a specific question about marriage in specific terms,
00:10:15.400 and so he refers to an earlier description in the Bible
00:10:18.640 about how marriage is between a man and a woman.
00:10:20.440 Oh, whoopsie-daisy.
00:10:21.100 At the time of our Lord's sojourn on Earth, and for all manner of millennia before then,
00:10:30.260 no one anywhere seriously believed that marriage could exist between two men or two women. 0.89
00:10:38.840 Lesbians! 1.00
00:10:39.440 Marriage was understood for all of that time until about, I don't know, like 2015,
00:10:44.660 to be about sexual difference, the union of man and woman as coupling,
00:10:50.040 complementary human beings for the good of the spouses
00:10:53.460 and for the sake of the generation and education of children.
00:10:56.600 And so to try to apply this scripture to LGBT marriage and relationships
00:11:00.940 is to take it out of its context and to twist its meaning.
00:11:04.660 Stop twisting the Bible.
00:11:06.680 Yes, stop. Please. Please stop twisting the Bible. 0.97
00:11:09.740 Sorry, Pastor Brandon.
00:11:10.520 Would be happy to have him on the show, though, to discuss these things.
00:11:13.120 Until then, I'm Michael Knowles. See you next time.
00:11:15.660 Maybe minorities, sexual and gender minorities, have something to teach the church.
