00:00:00.160CTV News and Bell Media tried to steal my money, but I am happy to report that they have backed down,
00:00:06.880in large part because of the efforts of Ryan and Tanya Davies from the Northern Perspectives YouTube channel.
00:00:13.420It is just maddening that we have legacy media outlets out there like CBC, CTV News, and many of the other ones
00:00:21.600who will copyright claim independent creators' content because you use a tiny little clip from their news broadcast
00:00:29.560which by the way is legal is allowed it's called fair use in the united states and it's called
00:00:35.860fair dealing in canada as long as i'm not just ripping a ctv news video and just re-uploading
00:00:42.360it on my channel which would obviously not do very well my audience would not like that
00:00:47.060it is fair use for me to use sections to make a point for the narrative i'm building or as an
00:00:53.420example for the thing I'm talking about. This is what the video looked like as of a couple days
00:00:59.500ago. It says that CTV News from Bell Media is copyright claiming my video for audio visual
00:01:06.760content. And as you see, in a 32 minute and 17 second video, the most significant portion of
00:01:13.540CTV News footage I played was between 7 minutes and 28 seconds and 8 minutes and 42 seconds,
00:01:19.180a minute and 14 seconds. Now, I do believe I played a little bit more later on in the video,
00:01:24.440maybe another 30 seconds or so, around two minutes in total of a 32-minute video was CTV
00:01:31.320news footage that if you've ever watched my channel, you know I frequently pause because
00:01:36.860I always frequently pause legacy media content in order to comment on it. And as you can see down
00:01:42.600here, this is what I mean when they were trying to steal my money. Impact on video. Video ad
00:01:48.840earnings in escrow. Revenue generated during the dispute period will be paid to the appropriate
00:01:53.760party when your dispute outcome is final. If the claim is released, revenue data in analytics will
00:01:59.660be added in the next one or two months. That is a big deal if you rely on YouTube for your income.
00:02:07.080I don't rely on sponsorships. I don't have any outside money except for the membership program,
00:02:12.660and I always thank all my members. Thank you guys for being monthly contributed to the channel,
00:02:16.920but I don't take any sponsorships from companies to endorse products or anything like that.
00:02:21.600It's just memberships and organic ads on this channel. So when they claim a video,
00:02:27.080it's basically like saying, we're just going to take your money for the day because you have the
00:02:30.840gall to play a minute of our footage, two minutes, even though clearly it's not seeking to be a
00:02:37.700replacement for the CTV News video. CTV News does this themselves, as was pointed out by Ryan and
00:02:44.420Tanya Davies on Northern Perspective. They've had one of their videos used 17 different times,
00:02:50.800an old interview that they did with Pierre Polyev. CTV News clipped that interview 17 separate times
00:02:57.760to play on their YouTube channel to broadcast on national television. And obviously, they never
00:03:04.480made a copyright claim against them because you're allowed to do that. It's a public video.
00:03:09.480other channels are allowed to comment on it other news broadcasters are allowed to comment on it
00:03:14.620and even when ctv news posted a video on their own channel that was made up 75 percent by just
00:03:20.520a northern perspectives clip that's still allowed as long as it's not being framed as this is ctv
00:03:26.500news's video this is our content or trying to scrub who it was made by or adding absolutely
00:03:32.800nothing as long as something was added and it can be argued to be transformative it should stay up
00:03:38.340And so now I want to show you what the video currently looks like on the channel. We have green lights across the board. It used to have the yellow marker on the earnings that it was all going to be an escrow. But again, that was effectively a pseudo legal way of trying to steal money from independent creators that CTV News simply doesn't like or thinks are unfair competition to them.
00:04:02.580you make copyright claim and you can try and intimidate the person into either letting you
00:04:08.280take the money or you have to delete the video if you dispute the claim and they disagree and
00:04:14.020they basically demand it be taken down either they get the money or you take the video down
00:04:18.300and if you refuse to take the video down a copyright strike is applied to you which for
00:04:23.680a youtuber is worse than someone coming and breaking your legs because if all my two legs
00:04:28.420were broken, I could keep doing this channel. That wouldn't affect me. I sit in a chair while
00:04:32.780I do this channel. But if you just de-boost the entire channel by hitting me with a copyright
00:04:38.320strike, obviously now YouTube considers me an untrustworthy channel that they don't want to
00:04:43.800distribute as much. And if your viewership goes down 50% or so, well, you're going to have to
00:04:48.720get a new job because you just cannot make it work anymore because nobody can discover your
00:04:54.220content. You're going to start losing subscribers. People are going to be like, I don't know why I
00:04:58.040haven't seen Wyatt's Channel or Portuguese Pie or Northern Perspective or Moose on the Loose or
00:05:03.760any of these other people who have had these mainstream media companies apply these copyright
00:05:08.240claims to them that could have turned into a strike. If that happened, people would just not
00:05:12.260see you anymore, and they would know it's because you're being treated unfairly. So I hope that in
00:05:17.760the aftermath of all this, although this ended well, mostly because Northern Perspective was
00:05:22.940willing to go to the wall and force CTV News to sue them and beat them in court, which actually
00:05:27.800would have actually done some pretty bad things to them in the short run or the medium term
00:05:31.140because if they take you to court you actually do get a copyright strike put on you until the
00:05:37.120until the court case is over that would have been devastating for them but they were willing to put
00:05:42.660the health of their own channel at risk in order to basically get ctv news to back off the conservative
00:05:48.660party of canada rachel thomas who's one of the conservative mps who sits on the heritage committee
00:05:53.860should actually make an issue of this. Get legacy media outlets in front of the committee who get
00:05:59.820our taxpayer dollars to put on, frankly, bad quality content. Yes, very polished content,
00:06:05.580but the actual substance of the content is bad. They're trying to wipe out their competition on
00:06:11.780YouTube by trying to make false copyright claims. And it was a false claim. When you upload a video,
00:06:17.760the video first uploads, then it processes into the HD quality that YouTube wants to display,
00:06:24.100and then it starts a copyright check. Oftentimes, I upload a video before the copyright check is
00:06:29.060done because my video is me talking about things on Twitter. No one's going to copyright me for
00:06:33.880talking about people's tweets or me just sitting in my room talking. There's no way of doing that.
00:06:38.920But that one, I actually let the full copyright run because I did use a clip from CTV News on
00:06:44.280their channel and i want to make sure that no copyright bot was going to detect i had done
00:06:48.640something wrong their copyright claim claiming that i had unfairly used a minute and 14 seconds
00:06:54.560of their footage and maybe a little bit more later that was manually done they had to go into
00:07:00.560their own channel back end detect if any other channel had used any piece of footage and
00:07:06.460automatically hit them with a copyright claim i know other channels like portuguese pie who said
00:07:11.340multiple of these from ctv news one after another and again how are you supposed to operate if all
00:07:17.760your money is in escrow and you don't know whether or not you're going to be able to get it and by
00:07:22.140the way if you dispute the claim the claim doesn't go to youtube and it arbitrates between you two
00:07:27.620and says whether it's a legitimate claim or not when you dispute the claim goes back to ctv news
00:07:32.920being represented by bell media and they determine if a violation has taken place and if they're
00:07:37.600going to give your money back or not which is a little bit not great because obviously they're
00:07:43.520incentivized if they think they can get away with it to say no i disagree you did violate our
00:07:47.360copyright so give us the money or take the video down because that's what happened to ryan and
00:07:51.680tanya davies first they actually were first rejected by bell media who was saying no you're
00:07:57.580going to have to delete the video or give us the money or you have to retract your dispute and you
00:08:01.780have to give us the money or delete the video or we're going to hit you with a copyright strike
00:08:05.360So before the pressure was applied, they were fully willing to dishonestly use their copyright claim to try and trip up an independent media channel that no doubt per capita gets way more views than CTV News.
00:08:18.240Moose on the Loose actually did this very interesting chart at the end of the year 2025 where he showed how many long-form video views, not counting shorts of course, each of the channels were getting.

00:09:08.600on the loose has like 88 million uh northern perspectives in 2025 i think had like 77 million
00:09:13.780or something like that these are big numbers for channels that are operated by one two people
00:09:19.600sometimes there's like one or two production assistants with some of the more polished
00:09:23.140channels, there's not much going on here. But CTV News, and it's always easy to pull up the
00:09:28.260jealousy card and say they're jealous. You know, it always makes you feel good about yourself. Oh,
00:09:32.080people are jealous of me. But in this case, I think they actually are quite annoyed that with
00:09:37.360all their money, their $30,000 of employee subsidies, all of their grants, all of their
00:09:42.920other Canadian heritage money that they're getting, that they still on a per capita level
00:09:47.400cannot get the viewership that some guy with a camera in his basement gets. Now, I'm not going
00:09:52.120to pretend I'm a journalist. I used to be more of a journalist when I did print articles, but
00:09:56.040Trudeau ruined that for me by passing Bill C-18 so I can't even open my Facebook page anymore
00:10:01.220that I used to post articles on. I've done the investigative work. It's tough. I don't act like,
00:10:06.980oh, I'm as good as the person who goes out into battlefields and reports from there.
00:10:10.880But when it comes to the commentary, we're clearly doing a better job than power and politics,
00:10:15.900than power play than all the bad shows on global news and city tv and whatnot we clearly do a
00:10:22.560better job than them and they don't like that when it comes to political commentary people maybe even
00:10:28.220still trust cbc and ctv news to you know to be able to report on a rainstorm properly and report
00:10:33.640on some general happenings in the world and whatnot but when it comes to analyzing that and
00:10:39.320actually coming to a common sense conclusion they're getting their lunch eaten and i think
00:10:44.060they don't like that their views on YouTube are not as high as they'd like because people would
00:10:48.480rather come to these other channels. You know, there's some people on the left who do commentary
00:10:52.980channels like Klaus Kellerman and Illyria A. and Rachel Gilmore. But other than Klaus obviously
00:10:59.040being extremely boosted on the algorithm, getting massive videos views for just lying to his
00:11:04.680audience, the video views tend to lean more on the right side of the aisle. Frankly, I'm going to say
00:11:10.280it's because, you know, conservative commentators tend to be more common sense with how they cover
00:11:14.640things. I'm sorry, I'm not doing elbows up crap. I don't, I'm not going to pick a side between0.95
00:11:19.540America and Canada when I'm analyzing what a good trade deal is. My thoughts about Canada
00:11:24.160and the United States are irrelevant. Obviously, I'm a patriotic Canadian. I like Canada. I want
00:11:28.560Canada to win. And that's why I have logical views about how we need to hold Mark Carney
00:11:33.260accountable for his actions during the trade deal issue, because it doesn't benefit anybody
00:11:37.720for me to just say, ah, Trump's a bad guy.
