00:02:56.060They say they're going to proceed with the layoffs,
00:02:58.020and they don't believe they've broken any undertakings.
00:03:00.060You talked about full force of the law.
00:03:01.820So what are you going to do now that they're basically calling your bluff?
00:03:04.540Well, first and foremost, we expect Stelco.
00:03:09.800to follow the undertakings uh that they've committed to uh uh to the government of canada
00:03:15.960and um right now a business decision or even a change in market conditions cannot be used
00:03:25.800to not follow their commitment so we're reviewing the stelco letter but let me be clear they were
00:03:31.480supposed to by the way it's wednesday they were supposed to take them to court on tuesday
00:03:35.320The Stelco CEO, I believe it's a different company that's the, you know, the umbrella corporation that he's the CEO of, but, you know, by proxy, he's also the head of Stelco.
00:03:45.000He went out and said that, no, we've never signed a commitment that we had to ever keep a certain level of employment.
00:03:52.120And the idea that that, even if they did, that you wouldn't be able to lay people off if market conditions change is absolutely ridiculous.
00:04:00.560As Mark Warner, the trade lawyer on the CBC, pointed out, then the Canadian economy is basically a suicide pact if you ever invest here.
00:04:09.580If you invest here, if a significant tariff hits your industry for a major export hub for you and you cannot produce goods for them anymore or sell to them, no, no, no.
00:04:19.380You must keep every employee that you have.
00:04:27.340but she is walking back here because clearly they talked way too tough about an issue that they1.00
00:04:32.900didn't understand and they look like a bunch of hypocrites and they look like they're just making0.81
00:04:37.640excuses by going after Stelco while every other area of the economy is also losing jobs. By the0.98
00:04:43.600way they even laid off a bunch of education and health care workers publicly so what are we
00:04:49.060talking about? Are you guys not supposed to keep those people employed but Stelco is?
00:04:54.140Under Section 40 of the Investment Canada Act, a few possible outcomes of a court process can lead to financial penalties towards the company, forcing them to abide by the commitment, and also a forced divestiture.
00:05:15.040So, forcing them to sell their Canadian assets.
00:06:01.300But we're going to take Stelko to court and potentially threaten to nationalize them, force a divestment of their company,
00:06:09.600and sell it to the Canadian government or some other partner of the Canadian government,
00:06:13.580because they won't keep people employed despite the fact that much of their production cannot be sold right now because of the tariffs.
00:06:20.720This is just economic fascism. The government starts quotas, tells you how many employees you must hire, how much you must produce, and what you can sell it for and how much profit you can keep.
00:06:31.280But it's still a private firm in name only, but the government tells you exactly what you have to do every step of the way.
00:06:37.780Therefore, I'm always open to sit down with the company and find a solution, but we're looking at everything that is possible to keep jobs in Canada.
00:06:49.840I'm saying that what Canada's actions are, they are tantamount to election interference.
00:07:04.000You briefly said in there that you didn't want to comment, but he did call you out by name.
00:07:08.240So I want to ask, is it fair for him to say that what Canada's doing is election interference?
00:07:12.500Absolutely not. And we'd never do that. And we'd never accept that also being done to us in Canada.
00:07:22.540Basically, what the question was there was that the American government has called out the Canadian government.
00:07:28.000I actually believe that was Howard Lutnick saying that the Canadian government is interfering in American elections by through many of the actions of their own of their own government officials,
00:07:40.000including people like Anthony Housefather, who literally campaigned directly on the ground with a Democrat, that they are interfering in American elections,
00:07:47.260which is far more significant than the recent claim the Americans are trying to interfere in the Alberta independence referendum
00:07:54.680because some independence guys went to Michigan to talk to a GOP strategist and it went absolutely nowhere.
00:08:01.000In the past months, as many of my colleagues, I've been to Boston engaging with the governor there.
00:08:08.740I've been also to Illinois and also engaging with the governor, J.P. Pritzker, there.
00:08:19.080I've been also to NASA in Florida, engaging also with the administrator at NASA
00:08:27.880and meeting with state representatives.
00:08:30.720I've engaged with Democrats and Republicans.
00:08:34.140Fundamentally, what I've done in the U.S. is to attract investments.
00:08:36.960and i but how many investments have we gotten we've literally still been losing more investment
00:08:42.340dollars from canada than we've been bringing in and as mark warner and other people point out
00:08:46.940what is the sense in punishing stelco right now for bad economic conditions that mark carney and
00:08:53.940the liberals are significantly responsible for because outside of the trade conflict
00:08:58.780canada was already not a great investment because of the terrible taxes and regulations in this
00:09:04.020economy. The tariffs were just a cherry on top of what was not a very good Sunday to begin with.
00:09:11.940The liberals think that they can keep blaming everything on the Americans while they're not
00:09:16.660actually trying to do anything to solve the problem. And I've been very happy to see the way
00:09:21.000that that that Pierre Polyev has been dealing with this issue. I think he's been getting a lot
00:09:26.380more aggressive on it recently. And then we're going to jump into some polls that show how much
00:09:31.260this sort of, uh, the Trump issue is now sliding for, uh, Mark Carney. So, here, Polly over here
00:09:36.980says, Trump is tough to deal with, but Mark Carney should have known that when he made a promise in
00:09:41.980the election to get a good deal with the U.S. He made the promise, he broke that promise. The U.S.
00:09:47.160tariffs have more than doubled and broadened on Canadian businesses since Carney took office,
00:09:52.200promising he could handle Trump. Everything is worse. Canadians can eat, can't eat speeches or
00:09:57.640pay rent with his political theatrics. It's time for results. And I think this is a good moment
00:10:02.780for the conservatives to stiffen their necks. Anyone who goes after you for defending the
00:10:07.660Trump administration, that can easily be waved off. Because you're saying, I'm not saying I
00:10:12.520like the tariffs. I'm not saying that Trump's right in any way. I'm saying he said he could
00:10:17.140solve it, and he's not even in the room trying to do anything. He's just sitting here saying,
00:10:21.800oh man, that Trump guy's really tough to deal with. It's like, really? Maybe you should let
00:10:26.780poliev be prime minister instead right now because at least you'd actually try and focus on the
00:10:30.960things that matter not walking away from the table over the u.s apparently rejecting a exemption on0.92
00:10:38.040tariffs for evs just the sort of product that carney started letting the chinese dump into the0.77
00:10:43.320canadian economy to the tune of tens of thousands of chinese evs per year and then like it's just1.00
00:10:50.400ridiculous why would they want to sign a deal on lower steel tariffs right now while we are letting0.99
00:10:56.420the Chinese dumps a cheap steel into our economy that if there was no tariff on Canada could start0.95
00:11:02.440getting shipped over the border into the United States even if the Americans had a direct tariff
00:11:08.480on China because it would just be relabeled a Canadian product once it hits our shores. It's
00:11:13.280not saying I like the tariffs from the United States. Obviously not. I'm saying these are their
00:11:18.680red lines and we need to deal with them. But Carney's red lines are like opposite and delusional
00:11:24.860that he wants to be able to do as much with China as possible
00:11:28.140despite calling them a national security threat
00:11:30.640he wants to protect our censorship laws
00:11:33.680and then he wants to maintain our supply management system
00:11:37.500absolutely despite the fact that it only kind of benefits
00:12:11.120One of the most interesting findings in our new poll, concern about Trump is fading slightly.
00:12:16.30046% have identified Trump as top issue in early September, 44% late September, today 40%.
00:12:24.080Still a major concern, but no longer quite as dominant.
00:12:27.220And I think in the next couple of months, we could see this being in the low 30s, if not the high 20s.
00:12:31.840And then it's not really a great environment anymore for Mark Carney.
00:12:36.880Whenever he can get the Trump issue into the 40s or higher, he's doing well.
00:12:41.060When it starts slipping, that's when the polls start tightening significantly.
00:12:45.660And here's another interesting finding from the next, from the poll from Abacus Data.
00:12:52.240Again, despite the fact that Liberals are still doing well, which is, again, just kind of a holdover from what the current news cycle is and all the Trump stuff,
00:12:59.640but as the job numbers and all the failures on the domestic economy front start hitting,
00:13:05.020I think you're going to start seeing the polling numbers for the Liberals decline significantly.
00:13:17.420Carney is at a plus 26 net approval rating, but that's down 5% since the last one they did in late September.
00:13:25.240Polyev has actually increased by 4, and he's now at a negative 8, and Avi Lewis is at negative 11.
00:13:30.820I actually think Avi Lewis is also going to start seeing an uptick in his approval rating over time,
00:13:35.880because despite being the NDP leader and being anti-Trump, Carney is viewed as not Trump.
00:13:41.660And if you're not Carney, then you are somehow pro-Trump, even if you're Polyev or Avi Lewis.
00:13:48.860Now, neither of them are like pro-Trump tariffs, obviously, but because they're not Carney and Carney's the one being viewed as fighting Trump, that is what hurts their approval rating significantly.
00:13:58.980It's not because people actually dislike Polyev.
00:14:01.060This whole narrative that, oh, Canadians just hate him.
00:14:05.260Most people just trust Carney on Trump, and anyone who's not him rubs people the wrong way.
00:14:12.360But if it starts kind of getting out there and more people start absorbing the fact that Carney's doing absolutely nothing significant to actually get a deal or to fight for Canada,
00:14:21.780and he's actually been enabling Trump's tariffs over time, that will start to dig at his approval ratings and start boosting Polyev, Lewis, and the polling numbers for both the Conservative Party as well as the NDP.
00:14:35.020Anyways, I believe there was something else I wanted to hit on here.
