Jagmeet Singh is trying to make his fake fight against Justin Trudeau look like a real fight, but it's just a fake fight. It's a bait and switch tax relief plan that doesn't actually need to be made permanent.
00:00:00.000Hey guys, Wyatt Claypool here. You probably heard me talking a couple of days ago about Jagmeet Singh pretending like he was going on the offensive against Justin Trudeau, and it's all a big fake fight.
00:00:12.460The GST-HST freeze was something that Jagmeet Singh and the NDP were supporting as soon as the liberals proposed it, but then a few days ago, Singh realized that he was looking really weak and pathetic, both supporting this very minor tax relief at the same time he doesn't care about the carbon tax doubling in April, and he was also attacking the conservatives for not being in favor of it, which just made him look even more like Justin Trudeau's secretary.
00:00:38.920So then all of a sudden, he wants certain aspects of the GST freeze to be made permanent, to permanently take the GST-HST off of certain items, or I guess just the GST because provinces can choose if they want to keep their provincial tax side of the HST on essential items, but he wants it off of diapers and certain foods and certain different ready-made meals and whatnot, and it's been all a very, very weak play by him.
00:01:08.400So this is what Jagmeet Singh said this morning, trying to push this Monday vote about trying to make it permanent, even though he could have been talking about this from the start and didn't.
00:01:19.720No parent should struggle to afford diapers for their child. Not now, not ever. New Democrats secured a GST holiday for Canadians.
00:01:28.060Today, Parliament will vote on our motion to permanently remove the GST off essentials. How will conservatives and liberals vote?
00:01:35.040Now, this is such a curious thing to say. He says,
00:01:38.000New Democrats secured a GST holiday for Canadians.
00:01:41.720So he's admitting he is both the person who helped conceive the two-month GST-HST freeze with the liberals.
00:01:50.840At the same time, now suddenly he's attacking his own piece of legislation, his own tax holiday, because it's not permanent.
00:01:59.360Well, which one is it? Did you create the temporary version, or did you always want the permanent version?
00:02:05.820Because it was only as of like three days ago that Jagmeet Singh actually came out and said,
00:02:10.820I would like the GST freeze to be permanent on essential items.
00:02:14.980By the way, too, the only reason people need this tax relief, which it's completely fake, it's a bait and switch.
00:02:22.140They're about to double the carbon tax in April. That's also why they're giving out $250 checks in April, which is going to be purely paid for through inflation.
00:02:29.780They're doing this to soften the blow for greater tax increases.
00:02:33.880But the only reason people need tax relief or need dental care or need free pharma care, which they don't really need it,
00:02:40.320is because the government, through high taxes and regulations, have bankrupted a lot of people.
00:05:39.440Now it's getting into all the screenshots of headlines saying that Jagmeet Singh will not be voting in favor of the conservatives' non-confidence votes and will be supporting the liberals.
00:05:48.420After all those statements against Trudeau and the liberals.
00:07:08.340That's why you're trying to modify it.
00:07:09.600You can't then say, like, Pierre, you're a bootlicker for billionaires.
00:07:14.720This is an anti-small business tax relief bill, tax relief measure, because it's two months.
00:07:20.480It goes from December 14th to February 14th or 17th.
00:07:23.340I forget what the end date is exactly.
00:07:25.360And what it ends up doing is causing crazy amounts of problems for small businesses.
00:07:29.440Because the logic of what is tax-exempt during this time and what is not is clownish.
00:07:38.240Here is Kevin Vaughn, the independent MP for Spadina Fort York, laying out some of these ridiculous contradictions in the bill.
00:07:47.720I'm going to try and pull it up here so it looks a bit better.
00:07:50.100But the thing is that you will, it will literally, the taxes will apply to one thing and then not another, which are completely arbitrary.
00:07:57.060So I'll just read out Kevin Vaughn's post here, because I think he sums it up quite well.
00:08:01.580Again, I wish that, I hope that Kevin gets added to the Conservative Party Caucus.
00:08:05.980He is, without a doubt, one of the most effective MPs currently in Parliament.
00:08:10.700He was somebody who actually named names of people probably involved in foreign interference.
00:08:14.560You can't read the NSCOP report, but through journalists, they were able to kind of compile a list of people definitely involved in Chinese Communist Party fret groups and all that sort of stuff.
00:08:23.760But here's his take on the GST tax relief.
00:08:58.740Imagine a small business who has to individually code into your point of sale terminal all the exemptions for what is or isn't tax exempt, and then charge it all back two months later.
00:09:09.160This is what happens when you have government comms shop setting policy.
00:09:13.060When folks ask me how I could have agreed to run when I asked, it's because new to politics, Kevin wanted to bring a clearly missing small business perspective that I naively thought would be welcome.
00:09:23.780He's saying this part because Kevin Vaughn actually originally ran as a Liberal, and I don't blame him.
00:09:30.780You're either going to win that riding as a Liberal or a New Democrat.
00:09:34.000And he never even sat in Parliament as a Liberal because the Liberals threw him out over this really stupid smear campaign about some stupid sexual accusation against him.
00:09:44.680Really, it's just because Trudeau is quite bad with women over time.
00:09:48.300So they kicked out Kevin over something nonsense to pretend the Liberal party actually cares about that sort of thing.
00:09:54.900So and finishing off a statement, he says,
00:09:57.240We need people who know the pressure of making payroll, the stressors of low sale of months, and the weight of your staff counting on you to pay their rent and mortgage.
00:10:05.100And I think that's also a good thing to talk about here.
00:10:09.080This is a tax exemption, a partial tax exemption that is only taking place, that is only effective during the two months of the year where sales are down significantly.
00:10:23.900People have mostly paid for all the holiday stuff that they're going to pay for.
00:10:27.900January and February are notorious low sale months for everything.
00:10:32.000So people coming, it's stupid to have a tax exemption that's going to put stress on small business owners.
00:10:39.460And I think they've calculated that the average savings that Canadians will get from this 5% GST reduction, HST reduction, it'll be bigger in certain areas.
00:10:50.580But the average saving will be like $5 over the two months, $5.
00:10:56.580Because 5% is really not that much in the grand scheme of things, especially when it's only applying to certain items.
00:11:03.280And those items are only a couple dollars themselves, that it's going to take a while before this adds up into absolutely anything.
00:11:11.380Anyways, that should be it for me today, guys.
