00:02:34.420 if they're allowed to embrace what is being taught. They're asking, is this acceptable?

00:02:40.240 Am I the only one who sees this? Am I going to be attacked for believing what is being said here?

00:02:46.140 And they do this because many people, honestly, they fear man more than they fear God.

00:02:53.360 So one simple way that you can help kind of fight this consensus war is by leaving a clear,

00:03:00.620 positive comment wherever you see or listen or watch this episode.

00:03:06.140 It's a great way, again, to move the ball forward down the court in the right direction.

00:03:10.400 So on that note, let's go ahead and begin.

00:03:12.120 Imagine a civilization where, for nearly 2,000 years, everyone used the same dictionary.

00:03:20.120 Words had stable meanings, judges used it, teachers used it, parents taught it to their

00:03:24.620 children. Every great work of literature assumed the same definitions. If someone asked what

00:03:31.060 courage or marriage or justice or freedom meant, the answer wasn't a matter of opinion. It had

00:03:36.440 been settled for centuries. But then, a rebellious professor comes along and decides to publish

00:03:43.920 a new dictionary. He didn't remove or burn the old dictionary, he simply printed something new.

00:03:51.160 And at first, hardly anyone noticed, and many of the words stayed the same.

00:03:55.040 But a few of the most important words were quietly redefined. The professor knew that novelty

00:04:01.620 is the universal attraction he understood that people loved what is new even if it's worse

00:04:07.880 than the old and he was right to the untrained this new dictionary felt fresh it felt insightful

00:04:16.480 it seemed to unlock hidden meanings that previous generations had supposedly missed and for many

00:04:24.200 that was part of its appeal it made them feel as though they had discovered something deeper

00:04:30.500 something special, something the rest of history had failed to see. And not long after, schools

00:04:37.640 adopted this new dictionary. Universities taught it, journalists quoted it, judges began interpreting

00:04:44.100 laws through it, and then children grew up learning it as though it had always been the standard.

00:04:50.600 Now, the old dictionary did not just disappear overnight. It was simply set aside, right? Then

00:04:57.140 it was treated as unnecessary then it was treated as being outdated and then dangerous and eventually

00:05:04.760 the very dictionary that had defined the civilization understanding of words for nearly

00:05:11.140 2 000 years was spoken of as though it had been the problem all along this is how perversion works

00:05:19.160 it does not always begin by burning the past sometimes it simply publishes a revised version

00:05:26.360 of it. It changes a few definitions. It waits for a generation to forget and then accuses the old

00:05:33.360 meaning of being strange or narrow or extreme. And before long, the new is called historic,

00:05:40.200 and the historic is called new. And this is actually remarkably similar to what has happened

00:05:47.080 in modern evangelical theology. For 18 centuries, the church understood the relationship between

00:05:53.640 Israel, the church, the covenants, the kingdom, in what was called covenant theology. And I want

00:05:59.800 to talk about this for a second because that is the old dictionary. Then in the 19th century,

00:06:05.560 a new interpretive system emerged called dispensationalism. It was fresh. It claimed

00:06:10.900 to recover truths the church had supposedly missed for centuries. And because it felt new and

00:06:16.680 exciting, it spread rapidly through Bible conferences and seminaries and study Bibles

00:06:22.160 and eventually entire denominations. Now today, many Christians have grown up assuming that this

00:06:28.760 newer system is simply what Christians have always believed. So when they encounter the old 0.62

00:06:34.400 historic understanding held throughout all of church history, they label it something new or

00:06:39.800 what they call replacement theology, as though covenant theology were something novel. And as I

00:06:46.140 said before, eventually the new is called historic and the historic is called new. And that's exactly

00:06:52.980 what's happening. So today dispensationalism has become the standard in America and covenant

00:07:01.120 theology is now treated as some sort of departure. And this is not some abstract seminary debate.

00:07:07.800 This theology is not some sort of footnote for pastors and professors. This is one of the most

00:07:14.440 important doctrinal questions shaping American life, politics, foreign policy, evangelical

00:07:21.360 loyalty, the conscience of millions of Christians. Because one of the great dividing lines in America

00:07:28.400 today is our relationship with Israel. Should America support the modern nation state of Israel?

00:07:36.420 Is the nation of Israel God's chosen people?

00:07:41.140 Should American soldiers, American tax dollars, American foreign policy be tied to the preservation

00:07:48.640 of the Jewish people?

00:07:50.600 Should churches raise money for Jewish causes?

00:07:54.660 Was America truly built on Judeo-Christian values?

00:07:59.440 And beyond these questions, there's actually more questions.

00:08:01.900 Is it good that AIPAC funds our national elections? Why do organizations like the United Democracy Project or the American Israel Education Fund or the Anti-Defamation League and Christians United for Israel wield so much outsized influence in American politics and culture?

00:09:52.580 have been woven into the fabric of American life. And these questions are tearing the country apart,

00:10:00.500 literally. They are dividing the Republican Party. They are dividing churches and denominations.

00:10:05.800 They are shaping elections. They are influencing wars. They are determining who gets called 0.68

00:10:11.220 faithful and who gets called dangerous. And that is why this topic is such a massive issue.

00:10:18.400 If America embraces the historic position of covenant theology, these questions have

00:10:25.060 a particular set of answers and will lead America in one direction, away from the nation 0.91

00:10:30.920 of Christ-rejecting Israel, which is in step with all of church history.

00:10:36.400 But if we embrace dispensationalism, these questions have an entirely different set of 0.54

00:10:42.080 answers and will lead America in an entirely different direction, becoming more united

00:10:47.220 with Christ rejecting Israel, which is out of step with all of church history. So what I'm saying 0.84

00:10:54.260 is that our national conflict over Israel is almost entirely not political. It's doctrinal.

00:11:01.880 It's theological. And this is why Ted Cruz, in his interview with Tucker Carlson,

00:11:07.380 defended America's relationship with Israel by what? Appealing to Genesis 12. It's also why

00:11:14.400 the United States ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, does not defend his position on the

00:11:20.320 basis of clear American interests or strategic foreign policies, but on the basis of theology.

00:11:27.300 And this is why the issues matter so much. I believe that if dispensationalism is exposed

00:11:34.800 as a modern, incoherent, and unbiblical theological system, much of America's

00:11:40.800 unquestioned loyalty to Israel will begin to collapse with it. What I mean by that is if I

00:11:47.100 can contribute to disproving this theology, I can help loosen the entire framework that has made

00:11:55.160 America's allegiance to Israel feel like some sort of sacred obligation rather than a political

00:12:01.480 decision. So that's my aim in this episode is to explain what dispensationalism is, where it came

00:12:09.100 from and why when you test it against scripture and church history, it doesn't stand. But before

00:12:15.740 we look at the new dictionary of dispensationalism, we need to actually understand the old dictionary

00:12:22.000 of covenant theology. So before dispensationalism entered the scene, the Christian church did not

00:12:29.220 read the Bible as two separate stories. Okay. One story for Israel and another story for the church.

00:12:35.420 Okay, Christians did not believe the Old Testament was Judaism and the New Testament was Christianity.

00:12:42.220 No, the whole Bible was Christian scripture, okay?

00:12:45.620 The whole Bible was the story of Christ. 0.94

00:12:48.740 The whole Bible was the unfolding of one redemptive plan. 0.99

00:12:53.160 Adam was a Christian. 0.97

00:12:59.080 David was a Christian, okay?

00:13:00.600 So from the earliest centuries of the church, Christians understood that God had one people,

00:13:07.960 one promise, one Savior, one covenantal purpose, and one way of salvation by grace through faith

00:13:14.520 in Christ. The saints before Christ trusted in the Christ who was to come, and the saints after

00:13:23.460 Christ, trust in the Christ who came. But both are saved by the same Savior, and they're saved

00:13:31.500 through the same plan of redemption, and they're brought into the same household of God and made

00:13:37.180 heirs of the same promises. Okay, that is the historic Christian understanding of the Bible.

00:13:44.720 Covenant theology is simply the recognition that God's plan unfolds through covenant.

00:13:50.540 So before the foundation of the world, the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit

00:13:54.920 purposed to redeem a particular people.

00:13:58.940 You can call it the elect, you can call it the church, whatever you want to call it.

00:14:03.220 Then in history, God revealed that purpose through successive covenants

00:14:09.080 with Adam, with Noah, Abraham, Moses, David.

00:14:13.180 And finally, in the new covenant, it was revealed with Christ.

00:14:17.140 And so the best way I've learned to think about this is the eternal covenant of redemption

00:14:23.560 is like the engagement or the intent.

00:14:28.280 The covenants throughout history, you know, with Adam and Noah and, you know, Abraham

00:14:34.760 and Moses, et cetera, are the love letters.

00:14:38.100 And the new covenant is like the wedding.

00:14:41.340 So every promise in the Old Testament, every sacrifice, every priest, every temple,

00:14:46.560 uh, every King, every prophet, every covenant sign was preparing people for and pointing people to

00:14:54.180 Christ, the bridegroom. Okay. There were shadows, um, but he was the substance. Uh, there were,

00:15:01.600 um, scaffolding before, but he's the house. Um, you know, all of those things before were the

00:15:08.300 cradle, but he is the child. Uh, they were the letters, but he is the reality. In other words,

00:15:15.180 Jesus was the true sacrificial lamb. Jesus was the true high priest. Jesus was the true temple

00:15:23.840 of God. Jesus was the true son of Abraham. Jesus was the true son of David. Jesus was the true

00:15:31.440 Israel. Okay. So in covenant theology, the nation of Israel was never the intent of the end of the 0.95

00:15:40.960 story. Ethnic Israel was the womb through which the Messiah came. Okay. The nation was the vessel. 0.86

00:15:48.980 Christ was the treasure. Okay. The physical people were the outward administration of this

00:15:55.400 redemptive plan. The elect remnant within that nation were the true heirs. And this is why Paul 0.96

00:16:02.860 says, not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel. And that sentence alone destroys the

00:16:11.780 entire idea that ethnic descent automatically equals some sort of covenantal inheritance.

00:16:18.200 Okay, Paul does not say all ethnic Israel is true Israel. No, he says the opposite. There is Israel

00:16:26.140 according to the flesh, and there is Israel according to the promise. There is the visible 0.92

00:16:33.020 nation of Israel, and then there is the faithful remnant within Israel that's the true Israel,

00:16:39.880 the chosen, the elect, the faithful. There are the children of the flesh, and then there are

00:16:46.320 the children of the Spirit. And that is, in the nation of Israel, there are some who are part of

00:16:53.860 the church and many who are apostate. And that distinction is not a footnote, okay? It is the

00:16:59.760 key to understanding the whole Bible and covenant theology. Jesus actually confronted this same

00:17:07.440 error of thinking that ethnic descent had some sort of right to covenantal promises. And he's

00:17:17.220 talking to the Pharisees. They assumed that because Abraham was their genetic father,

00:17:22.340 according to the flesh, that they were secure in the covenant. But Jesus told them,

00:17:28.220 if you were Abraham's children, you would do the works of Abraham. And then he said something even

00:17:33.160 more devastating. He said, quote, you are of your father, the devil, end quote. In other words, 0.96

00:17:40.480 Jesus did not treat bloodline as covenant security, okay? He treated faith as covenant security.

00:17:50.520 So John the Baptist said the same thing.

00:17:53.400 Do not presume to say to yourselves, we have Abraham as our father, for I tell you, God

00:17:58.620 is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham, end quote.

00:18:03.400 Paul says actually the same thing in a different way in Galatians.

00:18:06.380 He says, quote, those who are of faith are the sons of Abraham, end quote.

00:18:12.040 Not those who merely share Abraham's DNA, right?

00:18:16.220 Those who share Abraham's faith.

00:18:18.560 And that means that covenant identity is not defined by ethnicity, but by election.

00:18:24.100 It's not by bloodline, but it's by the blood of Christ.

00:18:27.580 It's not by descent from Abraham according to the flesh, but by union with Abraham's

00:18:33.220 promised seed, Jesus Christ.

00:18:35.880 And this is why the apostles constantly emphasize that believing Jews and believing Gentiles 0.85

00:18:41.940 are one people in Christ, one body, one olive tree, one household, one flock, one temple, 0.82

00:18:48.380 one bride, one new man. Okay, Paul even says that the dividing wall has been torn down.

00:18:56.440 The Gentiles are not second-class citizens. They are not temporary guests in a Jewish program.

00:19:03.800 They are fellow heirs, members of the same body, partakers of the same promise in Christ Jesus.

00:19:10.240 Okay, that, again, understanding covenant theology, that is the old perspective,

00:19:15.600 the historic perspective. That's the old dictionary, and all of Christendom agreed.

00:19:22.120 And this isn't just like a reformed position, because I'm reformed. It's not a Protestant

00:19:27.880 position. This was the universal position of the entire church, okay? Roman Catholics,

00:19:34.780 Eastern Orthodox, Lutherans, Anglicans, Presbyterians. And think about this. They all

00:19:40.300 disagreed on many, many things, but they did not disagree on this. And that should really tell you

00:19:46.720 something. That should tell you something for sure. This is also why throughout Christian

00:19:52.780 history, the Holy Land was called holy, not because it belonged to ethnic Christ-rejecting

00:19:59.560 Israel, but because Christ was born there, died there, rose there, ascended from there.

00:20:06.620 And, you know, if you think about it, like when the medieval crusades fought for Jerusalem

00:20:11.320 in 1099, they were not fighting because they believed that the holy land belonged to the

00:20:17.180 Jews.

00:20:17.940 They were fighting because they believed it belonged to Christ and therefore to Christendom.

00:20:22.840 It is the church.

00:20:24.680 That is our land.

00:20:26.680 Okay.

00:20:27.160 Jerusalem is not treated as some sort of inheritance to unbelieving Israel, but it's the sacred

00:20:35.100 ground of the church. You know, we know that the meek will inherit the earth. That would certainly 1.00

00:20:40.800 include Jerusalem, but that is the Holy Land is the church's land. And ultimately, the historical

00:20:48.040 theological assumption was clear. Christ rejecting Judaism was not considered an older sister

00:20:57.820 faith of Christianity walking alongside us. It was universally considered a false religion.

00:21:05.100 that had rejected Christ and serves now a false God. And that is another major confusion today.

00:21:13.820 Okay, many modern Christians, they assume Judaism is simply like, I don't know, Old Testament

00:21:20.760 religion without Jesus. But that's not true. Okay, Old Covenant religion had a temple and a priesthood,

00:21:28.280 an altar, sacrifices, purification rites, covenantal ceremonies ordained by God. Again,

00:21:35.000 this was Old Testament Christianity, not Old Testament Judaism. There was never been such a 1.00

00:21:41.180 thing as Judaism. Okay. Modern rabbinic Judaism has none of those things from the Old Testament. 0.97

00:21:49.840 No temple, no Levitical priesthood, no sacrificial system, no blood atonement. Biblical Israel was 0.87

00:21:56.320 ordered around sacrifice and priesthood and promise, all of which did what? Well, they pointed 1.00

00:22:02.780 forward to Christ. But rabbinic Judaism developed after the destruction of the temple and this kind 1.00

00:22:11.440 of religion of those who rejected Christ, they rebuilt their identity around rabbinic man-made

00:22:19.200 traditions. And so Judaism is not Old Testament religion faithfully continuing without Jesus.

00:22:25.840 It is a post-Christian false religion developed by those who are anti-Christ. That is to say that 0.91

00:22:33.940 the Old Testament does not terminate in the Talmud. It terminates in Christ. The priesthood

00:22:41.760 terminated in Christ. The sacrifices terminated in Christ. The temple terminated in Christ. The 0.61

00:22:48.140 promises all terminated in Christ. The land, the throne, the kingdom, the blessings of Abraham,

00:22:54.140 They all find their yes and amen in Jesus Christ.

00:22:58.780 And I wish I could go into more details around, you know, Jesus's phrases around, you know,

00:23:05.720 if you hate the son, you can't love the father. 0.92

00:23:08.500 And we know that the Jews reject the son, so they can't love the father. 1.00

00:23:12.540 They don't serve the same God as us. 0.99

00:23:15.000 So the historic Christian position is not that the church replaced Israel as though God abandoned 0.77

00:23:25.880 one plan and then invented another. The position is that the church is the true Israel, that it

00:23:33.480 started in the nation of ethnic Israel, the elect within the nation of Israel, and then it expanded

00:23:41.720 and exploded into the world where we have been grafted in. And so this is not replacement

00:23:48.140 theology. This is fulfillment theology. Okay. The unbelieving branches, they're broken off.

00:23:54.080 And then the believing Gentiles are grafted in. Believing Jews remain in and any unbelieving Jew 1.00

00:24:02.260 who turns to Christ is grafted back into that olive tree. But there is only one tree. There 0.97

00:24:08.840 are not two peoples. There's not two plans of redemption. There's not two destinies. There's

00:24:14.180 not two ways of inheriting the promises of God. There is Christ and there are those who belong

00:24:19.840 to him. That was the old dictionary. Okay. That is how all of Christendom understood the scriptures

00:24:28.700 and the plan of redemption. But then we had this new dictionary come out and it all began

00:24:37.440 in the early 1830s with an Irishman named John Nelson Darby. Now, Darby was not some fringe

00:24:47.460 outsider at the start, okay? He was an Anglican priest. He was ordained as a deacon in 1825 and

00:24:54.140 then as a priest in 1826 within the Church of Ireland. But in the late 1820s, I think around

00:25:01.460 1828, 1829, he grew deeply dissatisfied with the state-established churches, and he left

00:25:08.500 Anglicanism and became one of the co-founders of what's called the Plymouth Brethren Movement.

00:25:14.560 Now, it was in that context that Darby began developing an entirely new system of theology.

00:25:21.740 Now, there's a saying among theologians that I really like, and I think it's very good

00:25:25.520 to memorize this or remember it. It's, quote, if a doctrine is new, it is probably not true.

00:25:33.280 And if a doctrine is true, it is probably not new. In other words, after nearly 2,000 years

00:25:41.360 of church history, we should be suspicious of doctrines that suddenly appear and claim to

00:25:49.140 correct the entire historic tradition. So I want you to think about it for a second.

00:25:54.520 For centuries, the scriptures have been studied, preached, translated, debated, defended, confessed.

00:26:02.280 I mean, thousands of pastors and theologians and scholars and councils, creeds, synods, they've labored.

00:26:08.780 They've fought over the meaning of God's word on every possible element you can imagine.

00:26:14.780 The Bible has been copied by hand.

00:26:16.840 It's been printed into the masses, translated into multiple languages.

00:26:20.400 and now it's debated openly all across the internet by millions of people.

00:26:26.060 So when someone arrives late in history claiming to have discovered a doctrine

00:26:33.060 that the church somehow missed for millennia, we should really, really slow down, okay?

00:26:42.260 Because if a teaching is truly biblical at this point in history,

00:26:45.460 we should expect to find it somewhere in the historic witness of the church.

00:26:49.940 And if no one seemed to believe it, to teach it, to confess it, or build doctrine around it until

00:26:58.080 the modern era, then there's a good chance that we are not looking at recovered truth. We're

00:27:03.920 looking at theological novelty or heresy. Now, it's important to understand that the world in

00:27:11.300 which dispensationalism was born was quite unique. The 1830s were not an age of calm theological

00:27:21.020 continuity. They were an age of religious upheaval. The cold rationalism of the Enlightenment

00:27:28.120 era had left many people spiritually starved. And institutional Christianity at that time was

00:27:35.240 increasingly viewed, especially as things started pushing West in the United States,

00:27:40.760 it was viewed with suspicion. And especially in America, because America had this kind of

00:27:47.040 revolutionary spirit among them. It was a non-conformist kind of culture. And as a result,

00:27:53.900 the 19th century became a breeding ground for all these new movements, new prophets, new systems,

00:28:00.380 new prophetic schemes. So in 1801, we saw the Church of Christ get its start. 1830,

00:28:08.060 we saw Mormonism was born. 1840s, the Millerite movement began gaining some momentum.

00:28:15.160 The late 1850s, dispensationalism began its move across the Atlantic into America.

00:28:22.740 1863, you have the Seventh-day Adventists emerging on the scene. 1870s, you have Jehovah's

00:28:29.620 witnesses began to take shape with their doctrine. In other words, the dispensationalist

00:28:35.780 doctrine didn't arise out of thin air, okay? It came out of an era marked by unique religious

00:28:45.240 experimentation that we had not seen in previous generations. It was this kind of anti-institutional

00:28:52.120 suspicion, prophetic speculation, fascination with kind of new revelations around the end times.

00:28:59.620 And so out of that same atmosphere came Darby. And Darby divided redemptive history into seven

00:29:08.980 distinct dispensations, teaching that God deals with humanity in different ways during different

00:29:15.660 ages. And he introduced the idea of kind of a secret pre-tribulational rapture of the church.

00:29:23.060 And he taught that God has two separate peoples with two separate prophetic programs or plans

00:29:30.140 of redemption, one for the church and one for the nation of Israel, which would resume

00:29:36.360 after the church age. In other words, according to Darby, God had kind of an original plan

00:29:46.200 for national Israel, but the plan was postponed because the Jews rejected Jesus. So God instituted 0.63

00:33:41.640 at the heart of dispensationalism is this. Dispensationalism takes what Christ united

00:33:48.620 together and it separates them again. It rebuilds the dividing wall that the apostles said that

00:33:55.600 Christ tore down. It literally changes the gospel. Now, dispensationalism might have remained like a

00:34:03.640 small Plymouth Brethren heresy had it not been packaged for mass consumption. So I want to talk

00:34:10.940 about the history of that, but let me just give you a little bit of the backstory. In 1870, Darby

00:34:16.220 met an American man named D.L. Moody. Many of you guys have heard of his name. Moody, who lived in

00:34:22.760 Chicago and was a Baptist and a very renowned preacher. He was a congregationalist and he bought

00:34:29.140 into Darby's doctrine. Now, Moody, he partnered up with a gentleman named Cyrus Schofield. Now,

00:34:38.700 the Bible, especially the King James Bible, that was basically what everybody was reading at that

00:34:43.680 time, has always been challenging for the average reader, okay? Many Christians have struggled to

00:34:51.740 understand the contextual meaning of a particular verse that they're going through. So in 1909,

00:34:58.240 Schofield published what became known as the Schofield Reference Bible through Oxford University

00:35:03.940 press. Now, it was essentially the first study Bible, and a study Bible has essentially

00:35:10.820 commentaries, notes that are printed alongside the text of Scripture. Now, Schofield's notes

00:35:17.780 were not neutral. They taught a sharp separation between Israel and the church, promoted 0.92

00:35:24.980 this future literal restoration of national Israel, instructed Christians that they had

00:35:31.180 a duty to support Jewish people because they remained God's chosen people. And some notes

00:35:37.920 even suggested that Christ's return was tied to Christian support for the Jews themselves.

00:35:43.080 And essentially, all of these notes were dispensational notes. Now, who was behind

00:35:49.100 this project of getting this Schofield guy connected with Oxford University Press to produce

00:35:57.460 this great study Bible that would be promoted all across the world. A New York Jewish lawyer named

00:36:05.600 Samuel Untemeier played a really significant role in funding, promoting, networking, connecting

00:36:13.060 Schofield's work. Okay. Untemeier was not even a Christian. Okay. He was a Jew who rejected Christ

00:36:21.740 and he recognized that dispensationalism could be used as a powerful tool to generate Zionist 0.68

00:36:29.640 support in the West. And he invested his resources and his relationships to help advance Schofield's

00:36:36.120 Bible and its distribution. That's weird, okay? That should just go, why is there a guy who

00:36:42.240 doesn't believe in Jesus supporting this book to be sent all over the world? Now, the reference

00:36:51.120 Bible became the first book in Oxford University Press's history to sell over a million copies. 0.98

00:37:08.540 marginal notes as nearly like as authoritative as the Bible itself. And within a single generation,

00:37:20.800 theology that's informed by dispensationalism, it became the dominant theological lens for most of

00:37:26.500 American evangelicalism. Now, by the end, or by the middle of the 20th century, dispensationalism

00:37:33.640 had become the default framework for so many people, especially in America. And then came 1948.

00:37:42.160 And when the modern state of Israel was established, which we will talk about

00:37:47.200 how that happens in the next episode. Many Christians did not see it as a political

00:37:53.760 development produced by wars and diplomacy and Zionist activism, British policy, and post-Holocaust

00:38:01.420 manipulation. Okay, they saw it as a prophecy unfolding in real time. And because dispensationalism

00:38:09.520 had already taught them to expect this kind of great end times national restoration of Israel, 0.81

00:38:15.940 the existence of the modern nation state became, in their minds, undeniable proof that this system 0.86

00:38:24.540 of dispensationalism was true. And in that sense, 1948 functioned almost like a self-fulfilling 0.71

00:38:48.680 though the very system that had trained them to expect it essentially came to pass. And so

00:38:55.160 after 1948, America's relationship with Israel was no longer shaped merely by geopolitics or

00:39:04.920 national interest. For millions of Christians, it became like a theological obligation, okay?

00:39:10.720 Supporting Israel felt like supporting God himself. You know, if you rejected Israel,

00:39:16.400 it's like throwing your Bible in the trash. And opposing America's kind of unconditional

00:39:21.220 alliance with Israel felt like opposing God's plan for the world. But how did dispensationalism

00:39:28.720 actually affect America? And that is a key question. And it's what I really want you to

00:39:36.420 get from this episode. So I'm going to give you four, at least four ways. There's probably a

00:39:42.260 hundred ways, but I'm going to give you, I think, four key ways that this really did affect America.

00:39:49.920 Number one is eschatological pessimism. Okay. Eschatology is just another word for end times.

00:39:56.900 All right. Dispensationalism taught millions of Christians to read Revelation and Matthew 24 0.89

00:40:05.720 as though they are primarily describing the end of the world. The problem with this is that they

00:40:13.680 are actually describing the destruction of Jerusalem, the fall of the temple, and the end

00:40:20.500 of the old covenant age in AD 70. And I did an entire sermon series on this. If you wanted to

00:40:33.280 consequences on the nation. Instead of believing that Christ is reigning now, that his kingdom is

00:40:40.160 advancing now, and that the nations are being discipled now, Christians were trained to believe 0.67

00:40:45.240 that the kingdom was after the rapture. The kingdom was not yet. It was after the rapture to

00:40:51.400 come. And until then, we should expect cultural collapse. Ultimately, they believed the world

00:40:58.480 must actually get worse. Evil must increase. The church must lose its influence. Culture must decay.

00:41:06.080 Nations must rebel. And only then will Christ return. It's why John MacArthur said just a few

00:41:14.220 years ago in his sermon, we lose down here. Don't you get it? We lose down here. And this produced

00:41:24.040 a theology of defeat. Okay. Historically, we had an eschatology of victory. Dispensationalism

00:41:31.780 created an eschatology of defeat. Yes, we quote, win in the end, but in history, we lose. That's

00:41:39.700 the position of dispensationalism. The church that once built cathedrals that took hundreds of years

00:41:45.720 to build, the once church that built universities and shaped laws and discipled nations and

00:41:52.400 started new nations and sent missionaries and established hospitals and composed hymns and

00:41:58.940 hymnals and built institutions and expected the kingdom of Christ to grow throughout history,

00:42:03.920 was taught to see itself as a small remnant now waiting for evacuation. The church went from

00:42:12.520 building the kingdom to waiting for the rapture. It went from discipling the nations to watching

00:42:19.180 the headlines and waiting for everything to collapse. It went from generational dominion to

00:42:24.400 end times speculation. And once Christians believed the world was prophetically destined 0.96

00:42:30.380 to fall apart, retreat began to sound like faithfulness. So cultural defeat was rebranded 0.91

00:42:37.260 as biblical expectation. Losing ground was interpreted as like the proof that the prophecy

00:42:43.160 was being fulfilled. And this is why so many Christians checked out of politics and education 0.99

00:42:50.320 and economics and media and law and national affairs. They were told that don't polish brass

00:42:59.340 on a sinking ship. This thing's going to hell in a handbasket. You can't stop it. In fact, 0.91

00:43:06.280 if you're paying attention, you should want it to get worse faster because that means Christ

00:43:12.040 comes back sooner. Why preserve a nation that prophecy says must collapse? And that is the

00:43:20.000 fruit of dispensational pessimism. It did not make the American church more courageous. It made her

00:43:28.180 more passive. It did not produce builders. It produced spectators. It did not train Christians 0.96

00:43:34.340 to conquer through faithfulness. It trained them to lose with theological confidence. 0.90

00:43:40.980 Okay. Second, second point is the doctrine of the imminent return of Christ.

00:43:50.060 This is kind of the other side of the dispensational retreat theology. Dispensationalism

00:43:56.520 did not merely teach Christians that the world would get worse. It taught them that Christ

00:44:04.400 could return at any moment to remove the church from history through the rapture.

00:44:12.160 And that produced an entire culture of waiting instead of working. And since the rise of

00:44:18.760 dispensationalism in the 19th century, the church has seen an explosion of end times predictions,

00:44:25.880 prophecy charts, date setting, rapture series, and antichrist speculation, newspaper exegesis,

00:44:33.660 right? Again and again, Christians were told, this is it. Okay? These are the signs. The rapture

00:44:40.780 is near. Jesus is going to be back this Wednesday. In fact, there are more predictions since the

00:44:46.980 middle of the 1800s to the current day than there have been throughout all of church history.

00:44:53.600 But when you believe Christ is probably returning in your lifetime or in the next decade or in the

00:45:01.480 next year, it shortens your vision. Why build institutions? Why start schools? Why plant

00:45:06.880 generational churches? Why buy land? Why reform nations? Why build businesses for your grandchildren 0.78

00:45:12.580 or great-grandchildren? Why build cathedrals that are going to take 300 or 400 years to finish?

00:45:17.960 Why create art and architecture and, you know, libraries and seminaries and farms and publishing

00:45:24.280 houses and civilizations if you believe the whole thing is about to be abandoned? And this is how

00:45:30.400 rapture theology reshaped Christian civilization. It trained believers to think in terms of escape, 0.64

00:45:37.160 not inheritance, evacuation, not dominion, survival, not legacy. I actually once knew

00:45:44.340 a couple who never had children. They were members at our church for a period of time.

00:45:49.660 They have repented for this position that they held. But during their fertile years,

00:45:56.060 they were deeply entrenched in dispensational end times thinking, and they believed the return

00:46:01.180 of Christ was so near that having children seemed unnecessary. And so they never did.

00:46:05.240 and so this isn't just like a small theological error this is doctrine reaching into the womb

00:46:14.940 into the household into the future into it's convincing christians not to build what god

00:46:21.320 commanded them to build it again it creates this escapism and that is the danger christianity used

00:46:28.220 to be a force in the world until this doctrine came in like a disease. And so the church stops

00:46:36.480 acting like an heir and starts acting like a tenant. Okay, everything is temporary. Everything

00:46:42.180 is disposable. Everything is held loosely because in their minds, history is not something to

00:46:47.260 inherit, cultivate, hand down. It's something to escape. And my sermon series, I talk about the

00:46:54.920 alternative to dispensationalism, which is post-millennialism, which is an eschatology

00:46:59.560 of victory, an eschatology of hope. It's an eschatology of kingdom building. It's the

00:47:06.300 eschatology that fueled America and fueled Christendom. And so hopefully you get a chance

00:47:11.700 to go back and listen to that series. All right, third, the theft of Christian resources for modern 0.91

00:47:19.320 Israel. So when tens of millions of Christians are taught that modern Israel remains the central 0.77

00:47:28.700 object of God's prophetic concern, their loyalty begins to shift. Okay. They are told that the

00:47:33.740 Jewish people are God's chosen people and that the modern nation state of Israel occupies a sacred

00:47:40.340 place in redemptive history. And that supporting Israel is not merely a political preference,

00:47:46.560 but a spiritual obligation. And once that idea takes hold, resources begin to follow.

00:47:53.380 Money follows. Votes follow. Foreign policy follows. Church priorities follow. Billions

00:47:59.840 of dollars through private donations, lobbying efforts, military aid, political commitments

00:48:06.660 are directed toward a nation that officially rejects Jesus Christ. While Christians around 1.00

00:48:14.000 the world suffer persecution, poverty, displacement, and neglect. Okay. I want you, I just want you to 0.69

00:48:20.340 think about this for a second. Okay. What could have been built if those resources had been

00:48:25.740 directed toward the true Israel of God, the church of Jesus Christ? How many Christian schools could 0.94

00:48:33.140 have been founded? How many churches could have been planted? How many persecuted believers could

00:48:38.780 have been protected? How many widows and orphans and missionaries and pastors and Christian families
