00:01:44.700All right, all jokes aside, that was a pretty baller edit, but our day's episode is going to be focusing on, first, George Lucas. It's important that we get this out of the way right from the beginning. He is a boomer, and he is terrible, absolutely terrible.
00:01:59.600And so the cinematic genius of Star Wars, I think that that's there.
00:02:05.700I think that the prequels got a bad rap unfairly.
00:02:09.120And that kind of plays into the issue of nostalgia.
00:02:12.420You've got boomers and especially Gen X that remember going to the theater with their father
00:02:17.900when they're a kid or a teenager and watching The Empire Strikes Back.
00:02:21.920And then these prequels come out years and years later.
00:02:24.920And it does not produce the same kind of feeling.
00:02:27.760the same euphoric sense that watching a movie on the big screen in the theaters with their dad
00:02:36.180when they're 12 years old produced for them. That's the problem with nostalgia is that nostalgia
00:02:41.260doesn't just try to recreate something, but it has to recreate the feeling that you experienced
00:02:46.780when that something occurred. And that's really something that's impossible to do. So cinematic
00:02:52.460genius when it comes to the prequels of the Star Wars, I think that some of that's there. I don't
00:02:58.520actually think that the films deserve to be knocked as hard as they were. But in terms of
00:03:03.500the message, right, so get away from just the cinematography and some of the characters and
00:03:10.220just the overarching world, the universe that George Lucas created, and get to the moral
00:03:16.280messaging that he's trying to convey throughout the entirety of the Star Wars films, right? All
00:03:21.720three of these trilogies. It's a terrible message, and it's exactly what you would expect from a0.53
00:03:28.100boomer. The message is rebellion, right? It's the rebellion rising up against the authoritarian
00:03:35.680figure who's doing what? Bringing law and order to the universe. There's great aesthetics,
00:03:42.360right? Everything's organized. Everything's put in place. There's stability. There's security.
00:03:46.940there's uh but but people aren't free to do whatever they want there's no democracy yeah
00:03:53.100this can't be good people aren't free to do whatever they want where's our sacred democracy
00:03:57.160um and that's what you're supposed to be upset about and so gen z right the memes are going
00:04:03.680viral you know and there's a lot of really good ones but gen z uh is kind of saying hey well no
00:04:08.420we actually resonate with anakin um we actually what's what's the problem with anakin uh he's
00:04:14.760not allowed to love anyone, be attached to anyone. He's not allowed to have a family.
00:04:19.420He's not allowed to get married. He's not allowed to have children, posterity.
00:04:22.720All these things that are innate to human nature that he rightfully desires, he's not allowed to
00:04:29.020have in order to have any kind of leadership. What are the prerequisites? What are the standards?
00:04:33.640You have to be utterly detached. You have to be loveless. You have to be loveless. You have to
00:04:39.280have no attachment to anything except the system. Your full allegiance is to the Republic, right?
00:04:46.080You have this allegiance to the Republic, and why is Anakin not allowed to be—well, his gifting is
00:04:51.800off the chart. You know, he's a young white man with a really high, you know, midichlorian or
00:04:56.940whatever, you know, IQ. He's gifted. He's got great SAT scores and all these things, but he's not
00:05:03.620qualified at the end of the day because he was not ripped away from his mother young enough.
00:05:10.100And so he remembers her and loves her and actually goes back to try to save her. And
00:05:16.000Sam people have captured her, raped her, murdered her, and he reacted with justice, killing them,0.99
00:05:25.080and he actually felt something. He felt anger, right? Why is he not qualified? Why is he not0.99
00:05:31.160allowed to be on this Jedi council because he's a human being who loves his family and his heritage,
00:05:38.200his mother, and wants a family of his own, right? Wants to be married and have children.
00:05:43.260And when terrible things are done, he doesn't have the response of a robot that actually feels
00:05:48.420something for people that he loves. He goes to Yoda and Yoda warns him that that attachment to
00:05:52.480his mother is the path to fear. And he says, fear is a path to the dark side because with fear comes
00:05:57.000with anger and with anger comes hate. So literally he says, I have this strong, deep love and
00:06:02.020attachment to my mother who's not been rescued from this planet. What should I do? Wise old man,
00:06:07.540wise old green person in this story. And he says, well, you should rid yourself of all that1.00
00:06:11.320attachment that you have and be like me, attached to nothing except, I guess, the prophets of
00:06:15.920fighting the Republic's wars. Rid yourself of love, essentially. That's ultimately the message
00:06:20.520is you need to be a loveless, rootless, deracinated human being. It's really barely
00:06:27.580human at all in order to be virtuous, in order to be moral. And then you look at the Jedi Council
00:06:35.000themselves, and it's like this thing that Anakin wants to be recognized. He wants the acknowledgement.
00:06:40.440He wants to arrive and be positioned and not passed over. What do they represent? They're
00:06:45.840like, well, you killed sand demons with anger in your heart because he killed your mother,
00:06:49.540and you actually are a human being who loved your mother0.96
00:07:46.480So we work for a system, a managerial system, and we go and fight wars for the managerial system that is incredibly corrupt with a Sith Lord at the helm, and he's our friend, and we haven't even noticed.
00:08:06.560And so you wonder, why does Gen Z identify with Anakin?0.74
00:08:33.360about, and all the while, they are befriending, completely oblivious, the most demonic, evil man
00:08:41.720in all the galaxy. So, all that being said, at a cinematic level, the prequels to the Star Wars
00:08:49.480get a bad rap that they don't deserve. In terms of the message, like, what's the message behind it?
00:08:55.240Well, the message comes from George Lucas, a liberal boomer, and so the message basically just,
00:09:00.680if you devote your entire life to the opposite of everything that George Lucas intended,
00:09:05.780you, I mean, you'll be a saint. You could save the world. You certainly will hear,
00:09:11.940well done, good and faithful servant from the Lord when this life is over and you stand before him
00:09:15.620because the message could not be more wrong. I mean, the message is absolutely insane. Loveless,
00:09:21.860rootless, non-feeling, no family, no posterity, no ancestors that you honor or feel beholden to1.00
00:09:30.220whatsoever being a bludgeon of the state and the state being controlled by a bunch of retards,1.00
00:09:37.980right, aka the people, democracy, waging war on their behalf. Meanwhile, the true source of all1.00
00:09:44.200evil you're best friends with and don't have a clue. Well, George Lucas does the same thing that
00:09:49.100Frank Herbert, the author of Dune, does in that he's a lib and he sets out to write this story
00:09:54.300warning against hierarchy and warning against fascism and warning against charismatic leaders.
00:09:59.360But in the process, because he's actually a good storyteller, he actually ends up writing a very right-wing story.
00:10:05.860The overview of Dune is the rise, obviously, of Paul Atreides, who sets off this holy war.
00:10:11.580But the way he actually ends up writing the story, what happens is the war forces humanity to expand so they can't ultimately be wiped out.
00:10:19.300So even despite the war and even despite this leader who leads to billions of people dying, it's actually the thing that saves humanity.
00:10:25.840So because he's such a good storyteller and because reality aligns with right wing ideals such as strong leaders, authority, responsibility, hierarchy, when a good storyteller gets a hold of something and they write a good story, they can't help it to be right wing.
00:10:41.100In the same way, George Lucas unintentionally creates a very right wing story about the plight of young men under a system, an ossified old system that's crushing and overbearing.
00:10:53.660Kongman Lee had a great tweet on this.
00:15:18.800You have to use my link in the description and the pinned comment.
00:15:23.520Yeah, it's also interesting in this analysis as you realize that we are all like men of our times, right?
00:15:28.640So, and this is like, this isn't the only example you can think of countless examples probably of art that ages different than its intention, right? You write a book in the early 1920s and then the book by the 60s is interpreted kind of through this different, through a different lens, right?
00:15:43.700And so you can imagine if you're in the 80s and the 90s and you're watching the Star Wars films, your interpretation is simply just the zeitgeist.
00:15:51.260It's, well, culturally, societally, what are the relevant themes?
00:15:56.400What are the topics that people talk about?
00:27:46.520So they try to think about, well, what are key events?
00:27:49.240For example, if you're if you're Gen Z or sorry, millennial, one key event as a generational divide is that you remember 9-11, right?
00:27:58.540And so there's all of these cultural, religious, different elements and trends that happen that come to define a generation, a generation's worldview, a generation's outlook, their principles, their dogmas, etc.
00:28:13.060And so if you if you describe it as a generational divide, I think that's exactly right, which is these movies came and appealed to in one particular sense of of a generation's proclivities of their biases, if you will.
00:28:27.160And another generation now takes them and interprets them in their biases and in their, you know, and Jordan Peterson actually back in like 2018, he wrote that book, I think it was called Beyond Order.
00:28:37.740but he actually talked about this in one of the famous interviews that he did
00:28:40.860because the journalist left-wing journalist was asking him like why did you write a book
00:28:44.500on order uh the masculine order and not the feminine chaos and he said because we live in
00:28:50.500a world that's chaotic right so we don't need any kind of emphasis on what would a world that's more
00:28:56.620free and like we know that we know what that looks like what are people craving now people
00:29:00.900are craving the order right and so um and going back to young men and how they're interpreting
00:29:05.640these these movies and art and historical figures all of it is truly at root just just a desire for
00:29:12.420order but we're going to talk about this in a couple weeks in el salvador one of the keys to
00:29:16.860their revitalization has been the giving up of some of their freedoms in order to attain order
00:29:22.180so the younger generation saying yeah we have as much freedom so to speak whether it be sexually
00:29:27.520economically travel we can go anywhere in the world do anything and we actually hate it and
00:29:32.340we would be willing to give that up to have order, to have trust, to have a clean society.
00:29:37.100They're willing to give that up because they recognize, yeah, order actually, that's appealing.
00:29:41.820That's why so many people find the empire appealing.
00:29:44.200And the empire, honestly, in the movies, Death Star aside, it's actually pretty orderly.
