The greatest threat to the church in the New Testament era from AD 30 to AD 70 was the great heresy that was the single greatest danger to the Christian faith. We look back on this and it almost seems quaint. A modern evangelical does not fully appreciate just how destructive this heresy was. We read Galatians and the Jerusalem Council in Acts and think that it was all a big misunderstanding. They really just didn t get it.

00:00:03.960 I get it. It's annoying. Everybody asks, but I'm going to tell you why.
00:00:07.700 When you give us a positive review, what that does is it triggers the algorithm
00:00:12.040 so that our podcast shows up on more people's newsfeeds.
00:00:16.260 You and I both know that this ministry is willing to talk about things that most ministries aren't.
00:00:21.820 We need this content for the glory of God to reach more people's ears.
00:00:26.780 The great threat to the church in the New Testament era from AD 30 to AD 70 was the 0.96
00:00:33.020 Judaizers. 1.00
00:00:34.460 This was the great heresy that was the single greatest danger to the future of the Christian 1.00
00:00:39.760 faith. 0.94
00:00:40.760 We look back on this and it almost seems quaint.
00:00:44.860 A modern evangelical does not fully appreciate just how destructive this heresy was.
00:00:50.800 We read Galatians and the Jerusalem council in Acts and think that it was all just a big
00:00:57.820 misunderstanding. They really just didn't get it. We sometimes approach it like there was just a
00:01:04.560 little confusion about the transition from the old covenant to the new covenant, but they got it all
00:01:10.960 cleared up. But the reality is Paul did not treat it like some minor misunderstanding.
00:01:16.300 It was a direct attack by Satan on the church, and it was far more dangerous than the attacks
00:01:23.000 from the outside, the kind that Paul, before his conversion, participated in, dragging 0.97
00:01:29.160 Christians away, imprisoning them, beating them, and killing them. 0.89
00:01:32.920 No, this was far more serious than even that. 1.00
00:01:36.800 This was the church being subverted from the inside.
00:01:40.060 This was not people merely being confused about things.
00:01:43.480 These were people actively destroying the church from within.
00:01:47.840 This is the case with nearly all heresy.
00:01:50.920 Heretics mask their subversion in theological debate and confusion,
00:01:54.800 but their ultimate aim always is control and manipulation of Christ's sheep. 0.91
00:02:13.480 The argument that Paul is making in this book is with the Judaizers. 0.91
00:02:26.820 And I mean, even before we open up the text, I think it's worth talking about what those people were, what did they believe, right?
00:02:34.580 Judaizers were, they were Christians, right?
00:02:39.060 They were Christian teachers, right, people within the church who taught that in order to truly be saved, you had to go into the old covenant. 0.95
00:02:48.560 You had to be circumcised. 0.83
00:02:49.580 You'd be bound to the Mosaic law. 0.95
00:02:51.940 And only then could you truly be a Christian. 0.93
00:02:55.520 And why are they doing this? 0.92
00:02:56.420 Because lots and lots of Gentiles were coming into the church, and they'd see these Gentiles and say, ah, we can't really associate with them until they get circumcised, until they become Jews like us. 0.53
00:03:08.660 Because the Old Covenant wasn't strictly just blood descent. 0.83
00:03:12.440 Right.
00:03:12.600 You could be covenantally joined to Israel via circumcision. 0.94
00:03:17.120 Right.
00:03:17.500 And so they said, you had to go back and do that.
00:03:19.440 That I think is worth reading just right there from the beginning, Galatians 3, 1 through 9, right?
00:03:25.060 Go for it.
00:03:25.640 And Paul says, 0.99
00:03:26.300 Oh, foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you? 0.97
00:03:30.260 It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified. 0.99
00:03:35.060 Let me ask you only this. 1.00
00:03:36.900 did you receive the spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith are you so foolish 0.72
00:03:42.920 having begun by the spirit are you now being perfected by the flesh did you suffer so many
00:03:49.480 things in vain if indeed it was in vain does he who supplies the spirit to you and works miracles
00:03:54.940 among you do so by works of the law or by by hearing with faith just as abraham believed god
00:04:03.640 and it was counted to him as righteousness.
00:04:06.920 Know then that it is those of faith
00:04:09.180 who are the sons of Abraham.
00:04:11.860 And the scripture,
00:04:13.220 foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith,
00:04:15.920 preach the gospel beforehand to Abraham saying,
00:04:19.040 in you, all the nations be blessed.
00:04:22.800 So then those who are of the faith
00:04:25.160 are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.
00:04:29.540 Amen.
00:04:30.040 And the issue, right, it's Jesus plus something else, right?
00:04:33.100 that always is bad that's always wrong but this particularly is especially insidious because it
00:04:40.560 is saying you need to revert to the old covenant the old creation this world that god is destroying
00:04:45.640 that he's about to bring judgment upon right and you're saying that it's by works of the law and
00:04:53.860 this idea of works of the law right that it is this merit-based salvation you know works
00:05:02.600 righteousness and things like that's true they they believed that to that extent but it isn't
00:05:07.320 just simply oh they're adding merit and works to salvation right because they weren't they weren't
00:05:14.180 merely saying uh you need to be faithful in marriage or you need to be a good parent or you
00:05:19.080 need to do this plus faith in jesus yeah but they were speaking to particular works yeah yeah not
00:05:24.760 just the moral law of god which is perpetually binding not for salvation but as a response of
00:05:29.660 gratitude for the free salvation we have by grace. But they weren't doing that. They weren't just
00:05:34.160 adding works to the moral law of God, but particularly they were adding a strict adherence
00:05:39.920 to the ceremonial aspects of the law that were belonging to a particular time
00:05:44.960 under the old covenant that God had clearly communicated was done.
00:05:51.260 Yeah. Yeah. They're adding this. They're saying you need to go back into the old covenant. You
00:05:56.700 to go back into the old world. And Paul uses this phrase in Galatians and in Ephesians. And when we
00:06:02.700 later episodes, we'll go over Ephesians and really, I think, dig into that in detail.
00:06:08.100 But this phrase that he uses, the elementary principles of the world, right? And he talks
00:06:16.360 about this and it's the old creation, the old creation world, not just for Jews, but also 0.96
00:06:22.640 Gentiles, that Christ has delivered you from the elementary principles of the world. He's 0.92
00:06:28.200 delivered you from this old creation. For Jews, it was the law. It was the mosaic law of clean 1.00
00:06:35.800 and unclean and the various practices they had to keep, circumcision and so forth. And for Gentiles, 1.00
00:06:43.180 it was something very similar, right? They all were under law like the law of Moses, but it was 0.90
00:06:49.840 perverted and messed up and distorted. But they all had, right, Greeks and Egyptians and Persians 1.00
00:06:57.540 and, you know, our ancestors in Northern Europe, right? They all had their gods that they,
00:07:04.760 their demons that they sacrificed to and worshipped and that taught them to don't touch this.
00:07:10.940 You can touch that. These things are sacred. These things are profane, right? The entire
00:07:14.640 old creation world had this you still see this in in um you know aboriginal tribes and things
00:07:21.000 things like this or animist religions in africa and right they those are very much old creation
00:07:26.800 type world yeah right and and not even just you know uh on the fringes but you find this in places
00:07:33.240 like india yeah oh absolutely like when you think about uh religion it's like well really that's
00:07:38.620 just what you privately, spiritually hold to. Religion, what we believe about God, whether it's
00:07:46.460 the true God or false gods, whether it's one God or three million gods, what we believe in terms
00:07:53.060 of our religion affects all of life, including, and I wouldn't just say including, perhaps the
00:07:57.640 better word would be especially food, right? In terms of clean and unclean. And so you can eat
00:08:04.420 this. You can't eat that. Don't touch this. Cows are sacred. You know, that kind of stuff. This
00:08:09.660 spirit is very much alive. And there was a good expression of it for a time in Israel under the
00:08:18.200 old covenant, a Christian expression of it that came from Yahweh, the one true God. But there were
00:08:23.220 always perverse expressions of it under the old world before the coming of Christ from the pagan 0.83
00:08:28.520 gods, the false gods. And still today, although not quite as strong because Christ has broken
00:08:33.940 some of that stranglehold, but still there are darker places in the world today where those
00:08:38.840 old gods are still at work, not quite with the power to deceive the nations like they once had,
00:08:45.980 but still at work, still saying, don't have this, don't do that. But within Christ and His covenant,
00:08:53.020 the new covenant, where the Spirit is, there is freedom and freedom in Christ. And those who were
00:09:00.880 outside, whether it be in Hinduism or some of these other things, with those old gods still
00:09:06.240 active at some degree, deceiving people and making it about what goes into a man's mouth
00:09:13.060 and purifies instead of what comes out, his speech. That's to be expected. But within the
00:09:19.020 church, subverting the church, Judaizers still trying to get us back to a works-based righteousness 1.00
00:09:26.220 and particularly a ceremonial old covenant works-based righteousness that was pernicious 0.96
00:09:32.520 in the first century, 2,000 years ago. And if it was terrible then, when there was still at least
00:09:40.080 some overlap of the old covenant, how much worse would it be today? Well, and again, it's the
00:09:46.020 question of, right, what is the purpose of God setting Israel apart to do these things, right? 0.65
00:09:50.600 In the Old Covenant, only Jews had to be circumcised and keep the law. 0.88
00:09:57.720 If a Gentile comes in, a Gentile comes into Israel. 0.94
00:10:01.220 There are many examples of Gentiles operating in Israel that are caught fierce, that know the Lord and trust him. 0.93
00:10:07.480 You didn't have to become a Jew in order to be saved in the Old Covenant. 0.90
00:10:10.800 You could be saved under the Noahic Covenant, and many Gentiles were.
00:10:14.560 We see all sorts of Gentiles that are faithful believers all throughout the Old Testament.
00:10:18.920 but they didn't have to go be circumcised and keep the Mosaic law in order to be saved, right?
00:10:25.100 They just were.
00:10:26.600 Israel is set apart for a particular mission under the law, right?
00:10:30.620 That's why they're keeping the law.
00:10:31.700 That's why they have the strictures of the law around them
00:10:35.800 because those are the people in the land that God has chosen.
00:10:39.780 And inside that land is the sanctuary, right?
00:10:41.780 The same in the last episode we talked about, right?
00:10:44.160 You have the world, the land and the sanctuary, right?
00:10:47.840 that's why they're given the law to be that priestly people that ministers to all of the
00:10:52.680 nations. So you're saying that a sojourner, a foreigner could come in and receive citizenship 0.81
00:10:58.740 in Israel, right? The alien, the sojourner is not an illegal immigrant. They are an immigrant,
00:11:04.920 but not illegally, but they would be permitted to come into Israel, expected though to assimilate
00:11:11.560 and expected to obey certain aspects of the law,
00:11:15.400 eternally binding moral aspects.
00:11:17.560 For instance, they would not be allowed to come in
00:11:19.400 and set up high places to demon worship.
00:11:23.100 But they would be, for instance,
00:11:25.300 so they would have to obey the first commandment.
00:11:27.660 Thou shalt have no other gods before Yahweh, the true God.
00:11:30.880 But they could come in legally,
00:11:35.120 attain citizenship with the expectation to assimilate.
00:11:38.100 And part of that assimilation culturally
00:11:39.900 would also be religiously in terms of the moral law of God,
00:11:43.220 but not necessarily some of the ceremonial aspects.
00:11:45.560 Yeah, I wouldn't say being a citizen
00:11:47.060 because you couldn't enter the assembly
00:11:49.300 unless you were an Israelite. 0.99
00:11:52.840 Well, I'm saying eventually, the posterity, 0.95
00:11:55.200 eventually down the line, third generation. 1.00
00:11:57.140 Yeah, so you have that, but also you have Gentiles 1.00
00:12:04.960 that are able to come in all the time 0.75
00:12:07.020 and worship at the tabernacle and at the temple.
00:12:09.900 and they aren't required to become Jews.
00:12:13.740 They aren't required to become Israelites.
00:12:15.020 They aren't required to keep the Mosaic law.
00:12:17.580 And you look at Acts 15.
00:12:21.000 What do the apostles, when they assemble together in a council in Acts 15,
00:12:26.820 what do they determine? 1.00
00:12:27.620 Okay, what do we do about these Gentiles that are coming into the church? 1.00
00:12:30.340 What do they have to keep? 1.00
00:12:32.000 What's the lowest common denominator?
00:12:34.080 What do we require?
00:12:35.200 Right, and so you look at it.
00:12:36.220 It is the things in Leviticus, I think it's Leviticus 19, right?
00:12:40.720 You can't sacrifice to idols, right?
00:12:43.720 You can't do abominable degenerate sexual practices, right?
00:12:49.520 You can't eat things, you know, strangled or with blood, right?
00:12:54.880 Which is an occult ritual, right?
00:12:57.080 So you can't do pagan worship and you can't do pagan sexual stuff, right? 0.73
00:13:02.780 That's what they said is for the Gentiles. 0.99
00:13:04.700 They didn't say, all right, all these Gentiles need to be circumcised. 1.00
00:13:07.500 All of them need to stop eating pork, right? 0.99
00:13:09.700 They said, no, you could continue being Gentiles, right? 0.99
00:13:11.540 You don't have to become Jews. 0.92
00:13:13.480 You, instead, right, it's the same status that they had, the same way of life that they had in the Old Covenant.
00:13:19.980 You don't have to become Jews, but you do have to become Christians. 0.76
00:13:22.680 Yeah, you still have to believe. 0.69
00:13:23.960 And this was the standard in the Old Covenant for Gentile God-fearers as well. 0.82
00:13:30.900 And so, the major threat in Galatians is to say, actually, the new covenant is even more restrictive on the Gentiles than the old covenant was. 0.90
00:13:43.020 The new covenant, you need to go back into and become a Jew and be bound to the law and slavery to the law. 0.91
00:13:50.880 And Paul is saying, Christ has set us free, both Jew and Gentile, both from this. 1.00
00:13:58.120 There's a reason why after 87, after the destruction of the temple, Jewish Christians, 0.99
00:14:04.620 like ethnically Jewish Christians, they didn't circumcise their sons anymore. 0.95
00:14:10.180 They didn't follow the Mosaic law anymore. 0.98
00:14:13.280 There was no Mosaic law to follow.
00:14:14.580 There's no temple.
00:14:15.220 There's no old covenant any longer. 1.00
00:14:16.920 Now they're just Christians. 0.80
00:14:18.420 Those categories had come to an end. 1.00
00:14:20.640 And while the temple is still standing, that's why there's this major threat of the Judaizers. 0.94
00:14:25.520 because they're saying, well, the temple's still here, right? 0.99
00:14:28.040 We still should be keeping Passover.
00:14:29.600 We still should be keeping the feasts. 1.00
00:14:31.100 We should circumcise all of these Gentiles coming in. 1.00
00:14:35.040 And it's subverting the church because it's saying, 1.00
00:14:38.100 you aren't really saved unless you're a Jew, right?
00:14:41.680 That is the issue with Paul in the book of Galatians. 1.00
00:14:47.680 And it's a threat to us today, right?
00:14:52.100 Not in the same way, right?
00:14:53.620 not in the same danger, but we're, we're starting when we say, right, well, there is this old 0.61
00:15:00.140 covenant category still of these people called Jews and that God has preserved that category
00:15:04.540 all throughout time. He hasn't ended the old covenant totally and completely. And it, it
00:15:12.040 subverts us in a, in a very similar way, right? Because, right, imagine if, right, you have this
00:15:19.700 perspective you think well we need to keep the jews around forever all right well then you're 0.99
00:15:23.880 not going to evangelize them and try to convert them right and right you can maybe be um subverted 0.99
00:15:29.940 by this aberrant theology that says actually we need to give them billions of dollars and give
00:15:34.440 them their own country and all of these things right of an eight pack handler forever one of
00:15:39.460 our american yeah i think it's a species of of galatianism i think so yeah and and so right but 0.82
00:15:46.240 You read the things that Paul says and it's relevant to us here today because, right, what Paul says in Galatians 3 is the death knell for this aberrant theology just like it was to the Judaizers, right?
00:16:02.240 So this idea of, you know, whether it's Nikki Haley or Mike Johnson or, you know, John Hagee or whomever saying we need to bless Israel because, you know, whoever blesses Israel, God is going to bless. 0.77
00:16:18.320 Whoever curses Israel, God is going to curse.
00:16:20.580 That promise to Abraham and to his seed, right? 0.80
00:16:24.280 They assume that.
00:16:25.240 Well, that's, Paul says the opposite.
00:16:27.460 Which is, I mean, it's absolutely true.
00:16:29.060 That's why I always do my best to bless Christians.
00:16:31.880 That's right.
00:16:32.960 That's right.
00:16:34.140 And that's what Paul says, right?
00:16:36.380 In Galatians 3.29, right?
00:16:37.980 He says, if you are Christ, then you are Abraham's offspring and heirs according to the promise.
00:16:42.700 That's right. 0.85
00:16:43.360 You are Israel. 0.97
00:16:44.880 It is incontrovertible that that's, who are the promises to Abraham for today? 0.97
00:16:51.160 It's not for a nation state on the Eastern Mediterranean.
00:16:56.120 It's not for people of particular genetic descent.
00:16:58.860 it is to Christ, the true Israel, the faithful Israel, and to those united to him by faith,
00:17:08.500 right? Both Jew and Gentile. In Christ, there's neither Jew nor Gentile. They're united to him 0.94
00:17:13.080 by faith. And that is who the heir of the promises that God has made, because that's always the
00:17:19.880 objection you get from a lot of well-meaning Christian folks that have been psyoped by this
00:17:28.500 thing where it's like, well, Andrew, right? God says we got to bless Israel, right? We got to
00:17:33.940 bless Israel. You know, Jerusalem is the apple of my eye, right? Well, it is. And, you know,
00:17:41.960 just the other day when we were in church, we were in Jerusalem, right? We were in the apple
00:17:46.980 of God's eye, right? All of these, I mean, they say, well, he's making an everlasting covenant,
00:17:52.900 an everlasting promise. And you're saying that he's breaking that promise, that it's gone to
00:17:58.140 somebody else. And I'm saying, no, it has not. It's still to Israel, right? It's still to Abraham's
00:18:06.840 seed, to Abraham's descendants, right? Paul is saying, who is that? That is Christ and his people.

00:20:16.940 Again, that's rightresponseconference.com.
00:20:20.320 Yeah, the seeds, it's not plural, but singular.
00:20:22.840 The promise is made to Abraham's seed.
00:20:24.640 That means it's made to Jesus. 0.77
00:20:26.580 And it's made, therefore, to Jesus
00:20:28.740 and all those who have union with him,
00:20:30.780 who are co-heirs with Christ through faith.
00:20:32.540 If you put on Christ, if you've been baptized,
00:20:34.260 you put on Christ and you are an heir.
00:20:36.880 You are a royal son of God in the family of God.
00:20:41.040 So Abraham and Israel, according to the flesh, would inherit a particular land, a land of promise.
00:20:47.740 But to Christ, his seed was promised that he would inherit all the land, all the kingdoms of the earth.
00:20:53.000 Including him, all the nations of the world would be blessed.
00:20:56.440 And who inherits these lands and all the earth?
00:21:02.740 Christ and those who have union with him.
00:21:04.960 So it's Christians.
00:21:06.940 And that's what we're doing by God's grace.
00:21:08.860 and we're doing it with love, we're doing it with gospel preaching, but we're also doing it with
00:21:14.000 ethical, biblical, political expressions and applications and all these different ways in
00:21:19.460 the civil sphere, the church, ecclesiastical sphere with word and sacrament as in the sphere
00:21:25.160 of the home, as fathers and mothers, catechizing our children, not giving them over to the state
00:21:30.660 and public school and training them to fear the Lord in all these different ways. What we're doing
00:21:36.120 is, you know, march on, pray on, you know, we're gaining ground, you know, and little by little, 0.96
00:21:41.760 we are inheriting, the meek shall inherit the earth, not just heaven, but the earth as co-heirs
00:21:48.800 with Christ, the promise is ours, and little by little, the knowledge of the glory of God will 0.96
00:21:55.540 cover the whole earth as the waters cover the sea, and the meek will inherit the whole earth,
00:22:00.560 the nations belong to Christ and His people, and little by little by little, the nations are 0.96
00:22:05.780 becoming Christian. The goal is not to build a third temple, which would be an abomination 0.96
00:22:11.500 to God in Israel on the temple mount. Now, the goal... 0.83
00:22:15.580 Yeah, because what would you be doing? You'd be offering sacrifices after the sacrifice
00:22:19.840 has already been done.
00:22:21.420 So, the goal is not to offend God. The goal is to please God. The goal is the true third temple,
00:22:27.800 which is made with living stones, not brick and mortar, but living stones. Those living stones
00:22:33.180 being the saints, those with faith in Jesus Christ and have union with him by the Spirit.
00:22:38.180 The goal is that that temple would not just have a specific geographic locale, but that it would
00:22:43.920 fill the whole world. And that the whole earth would be filled with this third temple, aka the
00:22:50.020 church. And that God would be pleased with that. And that really is, you've said it several times,
00:22:55.240 but it's all the way back to Genesis 1. That's the original mandate. It's Adam's eschaton. He
00:23:00.820 had an eschaton. And then the second Adam, Christ, also, and those who have union with him, we also
00:23:07.100 have an eschaton. And it's the same as Adam's in the conceptual form, but just a greater catalytic
00:23:14.680 exponential degree. Adam, it was not- It was glorious, but it's even more-
00:23:19.200 Right. Adam was to be fruitful multiply. So, they were to multiply worshipers of God,
00:23:25.360 the triune God, and to train them and teach them in the ways of God. But image bearers filling the 0.88
00:23:32.940 earth, but also the whole creation was good, but the whole creation wasn't a paradise. Adam was
00:23:40.120 actually formed from the dust of the ground in the wilderness outside of the garden and then placed
00:23:44.620 into the garden. So, the goal was one, multiply worshipers and two, expand the temple, expand the
00:23:52.760 garden so that the whole earth would eventually be a garden and the whole garden that covers the
00:23:58.200 whole earth would be filled with worshipers. So it would be a global temple filled with
00:24:03.980 worshipers of the triune God. And we are doing that now through the eschaton given to the second 1.00
00:24:10.880 Adam, Christ. That's now our promise. And where Adam, the first Adam failed, the second Adam has 0.79
00:24:18.460 succeeded and his success is ours as we have union with him by grace through faith. And anything
00:24:24.960 that detours from that is a perversion of the gospel. Yeah. I mean, the issue that Paul has
00:24:34.360 is, right, if this is true what Paul is saying, and it is true what Paul is saying, that the 0.97
00:24:42.120 Gentiles are co-heirs of these promises, right? Not by being circumcised, right? Because if they're 0.68
00:24:48.280 circumcised, you're no longer Gentiles, right? They're Jews now because the covenant wasn't just 1.00
00:24:52.740 genetic. It was a covenant, right? You could be grafted into the old covenant too. Gentiles could 0.98
00:24:57.720 be grafted in and many were, right? But Paul is saying, no, the Gentiles as Gentiles are being 1.00
00:25:05.440 brought into the covenant and they're made heirs of the promise via faith. And for the Judaizers 0.99
00:25:10.900 to do what they are doing is to say, these promises, right, can only be ascertained via 0.97
00:25:20.240 the law, right, via adhering to the law, going and being enslaved and bound under the law.
00:25:27.740 And so, he's grounding this theology in a theology of the promises and who the promises
00:25:33.360 are for. And so, today, for us, if we say, all right, all of those promises, right, most of the
00:25:40.280 promises all throughout the Old Testament. Okay, I'll grant that they go to the church, but the
00:25:44.140 land promises, right? The land promises, we're going to separate those out. You know, how? Well,
00:25:50.060 we just are. And we're going to give them to these other people, the Jews, right? And that's 1.00
00:25:56.100 for them, right? The spiritual promises, right? The spiritual promises, yeah, okay, I'll grant
00:26:00.980 you, Paul, that they get to have that. What you're saying is these promises, right? We can divide up
00:26:06.780 the promises of God and say that some of them come via the law, some of them come via adhering 0.91
00:26:12.460 to the law and being circumcised and maintaining these traditions of the old creation world 0.77
00:26:17.060 that God has destroyed. And that's simply not true, right? All the promises of God are yes and 0.64
00:26:23.060 amen in Christ, all of them. And they only belong to those who are Abraham's seed. And he's clear, 0.97
00:26:30.340 like, who is Abraham's seed, right? It's those who have the faith of Abraham, right? Those who
00:26:35.460 have the faith of Abraham, not those who follow the covenant stricture to the Mosaic covenant,
00:26:43.220 right? Not those who are genetically descended from Abraham. It's those who have the faith of
00:26:48.440 Abraham, right? That's the basis of Paul's objection to the Galatian heresy is that the
00:26:56.340 promises are given via faith, not via circumcision, right? Not via membership in Israel.
00:27:04.620 And we have to take that seriously now today
00:27:07.100 because if people are coming and saying,
00:27:09.100 no, the promises of God,
00:27:10.720 some of them go to this group 0.99
00:27:12.680 who have them via circumcision
00:27:14.700 and via membership in Israel.
00:27:16.760 And that group is really special.
00:27:18.760 And really, in the sight of God,
00:27:21.240 that group is superior. 0.96
00:27:22.760 The Christians are the adopted stepchildren of God. 1.00
00:27:28.700 But the natural born sons that God prefers, 0.98
00:27:32.880 actually, his favorite is Israel according to the flesh or this modern nation state of Israel.
00:27:41.520 And there's so many problems with that. One, it minimizes the finished work of Christ and the
00:27:48.520 promises that belong not just to Christians, but belong to him because all the promises for
00:27:52.640 Christians are the promises that were given to Christ. So it actually minimizes Christ's 0.84
00:27:57.220 inheritance, which is ours. But then beyond that, not only is it bad for Christians by virtue of 0.91
00:28:02.860 Christians being co-heirs with Christ, it's bad for Christ, minimizes his inheritance and what he 0.55
00:28:09.080 is worthy of and what he has earned through his obedience and his finished work. So, not only is 0.84
00:28:14.300 it bad for Christians, it's also, and I think it's important for the listener to hear this, 1.00
00:28:18.000 it's bad for modern Jews. Because I really believe that if we dropped the rhetoric of 0.86
00:28:23.020 this is, you know, there are Christians, there are non-Christians, and then there's this third
00:28:28.720 way, this third category of these special people that are the natural-born sons and daughters of
00:28:35.620 God that he loves best, that rhetoric of God's favorite people, God's special people,
00:28:42.180 that is not a great ingredient if you're trying to avoid hatred from the world.
00:28:50.180 Yeah, you want...
00:28:51.340 You're antagonizing the nations.
00:28:53.480 Yeah, and you don't want people to be...
00:28:55.960 When I see one of my kids telling their siblings, mom and dad love me best.
00:29:00.300 You know what I tell them to do?
00:29:01.480 Stop it.
00:29:02.120 Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:29:02.680 Stop that.
00:29:04.080 You're asking to get beat up.
00:29:05.480 Yeah, I think you bring up a good point that I don't want people to be persecuted or mistreated or certainly not killed or anything and face violence, all of that.
00:29:19.320 Of course not.
00:29:19.700 And for Christians to say, yeah, these are the special, holy, chosen people, right?
00:29:26.220 What that does is when people discover that's not true, right? 0.89
00:29:31.480 They swing to the other end.
00:29:33.500 They get radicalized and angry.
00:29:35.360 They are especially bad people, right?
00:29:38.640 They go from these are the holiest people on earth to these are the most evil people on earth. 0.91
00:29:42.780 Right.
00:29:43.340 When my perspective is they're just people.
00:29:46.060 Right.
00:29:46.240 There's people, and there's a lot of people that do a lot of bad stuff.
00:29:50.700 And there are a lot of problems.
00:29:52.540 The reality of the world is just not that simple.
00:29:55.760 I wish it was.
00:29:56.420 It's complex. 1.00
00:29:57.300 At a simple level, the biggest problem right now in our world is not Jews. 1.00
00:30:01.460 It's sin. 1.00
00:30:02.340 The biggest problem is sin. 1.00
00:30:03.720 And sin is found in the hearts of all men, especially unbelievers. 1.00
00:30:07.420 Christians are sinners, but unbelievers are totally depraved. 1.00
00:30:11.020 And total depravity exists in the heart of every unbeliever. 1.00
00:30:16.240 regardless of nationality or race or religion or any of those things. 0.98
00:30:21.040 So, number one, first, in a 30,000-foot view, the chief problem is sin.
00:30:26.820 Beyond that, though, within the realm of total depravity,
00:30:31.020 in terms of outward manifestations of evil,
00:30:34.880 there are, throughout history, occasions where a certain individual
00:30:40.120 or even groups of individuals would do outwardly especially pernicious things
00:30:45.400 that would cause large ramifications of consequences and destruction and those kinds of
00:30:51.160 things. And I do think that there are modern day Jews who have done those things, but not 1.00
00:31:00.540 exclusively Jews and certainly not all of the Jews. And so to say, look, the problem is sin 0.58
00:31:07.380 and there are some Jews who disproportionately are responsible for pornography. That is just, 0.98
00:31:14.940 That's not anti-Semitic.
00:31:16.620 That's just saying, you know, opening your eyes.
00:31:20.400 That's a tree.
00:31:21.460 That's a mountain.
00:31:23.000 That's just part of it.
00:31:24.080 But then the question is, what do we do about it?
00:31:25.920 Well, yeah, we're not egalitarians.
00:31:27.940 Like groups, right?
00:31:29.380 Some groups do worse stuff than other groups.
00:31:32.080 It's a fact, right?
00:31:34.820 And especially—
00:31:35.940 And then within those groups, it's not always every individual member of that group.
00:31:39.520 Yeah, of course not.
00:31:41.120 We're talking about general statistics.
00:31:43.000 Yeah, you can notice patterns and act accordingly. And the issue is that if there's a group whose the core of their identity isn't even necessarily what they positively believe religiously or culturally or anything else.
00:32:06.100 There are positive aspects of what they believe.
00:32:10.100 But the very core of it is, whatever I am, I am not a Christian.
00:32:15.340 The core identity is a rejection of Christ.
00:32:17.540 Yeah, yeah.
00:32:18.360 You've taught me this before.
00:32:19.860 Correct me if I'm wrong.
00:32:20.900 But I think I got this from you.
00:32:22.440 But you said, in the technical sense, you can be a secular Jew. 0.98
00:32:27.040 You can be a gay Jew. 0.96
00:32:28.880 You can be an Islamic Jew. 0.99
00:32:30.640 I don't know about Islamic, but yeah. 1.00
00:32:32.020 Okay, all right.
00:32:32.660 But atheist Jew, maybe a Hindu Jew. 0.83
00:32:36.100 But the only thing that you really cannot be is a Christian. 0.97
00:32:40.400 At the very least, right, if you adopt some other cultural identity or whatever, 1.00
00:32:47.040 your family probably won't disown you and cut you off
00:32:50.080 and all your friends and neighbors and everybody you grew up with.
00:32:52.620 But if you become a Christian, you're done. 0.96
00:32:54.580 You're done. 1.00
00:32:55.280 You are no longer part of our family.
00:32:58.380 You are cut out of the inheritance.
00:32:59.800 Because that's the core identity is that Jesus is not the Messiah.
00:33:02.840 Yeah.
00:33:03.020 He's not the Christ. 1.00
00:33:03.800 because Christians are, are very bad, right? They're, they're viewed in this, this friend enemy 0.98
00:33:10.160 way. And, and so some of it is just for Christians to better understand the other,
00:33:15.960 right? I think that's what this, this does. And, and my hope in talking about these things,
00:33:22.140 and I say this all the time, and, and my, my hope is that if we're better able to understand the 0.93
00:33:27.480 other, this group that is not like us, right? Rather than having this weird view that these
00:33:32.600 are the special holy very very godly chosen people right they just they just don't have
00:33:37.840 the new testament but whatever right they're still very holy wonderful people um right that
00:33:45.500 that causes problems for people because they they don't think like you can look at the statistics
00:33:51.320 like how do different religious groups view other religious groups and and evangelical christians
00:33:57.420 in america right their view of jews is almost universally positive but then you turn it around
00:34:03.540 and then then other religions you know islam is probably the lowest right and um and then you 0.58
00:34:09.520 turn it around right how the average jews view of evangelicals is the very low the muslims higher
00:34:16.080 than than us and and it's and it's like wow that's kind of interesting right our greatest ally
00:34:23.320 Yeah, and it's like, we should at least come to grips with that reality, that these maybe are not, we don't have to treat them as enemies, but we shouldn't just assume that they are friends and friendly to us.
00:34:35.960 The feelings are not mutual.
00:34:37.300 Yeah.
00:34:38.080 Yeah, so let's end the episode like this.
00:34:40.680 This is how I want to end it, is I've thought this several times.
00:34:44.960 I may have said it in a previous episode we've already recorded, but I want to get it out, and I think this episode is a good one to get out this concept.
00:34:51.840 for anybody here at the end of the episode who's listening and feels as though what we're espousing
00:34:58.440 is jarring, shocking, right? And you're like, that's anti-Semitic. But you're a Christian.
00:35:05.360 Let's say you really are a Christian and you do in general, you disagree with what we're saying
00:35:09.700 in specific in this episode, but in general, you do understand the concept, the importance of
00:35:15.080 taking no part, as Ephesians says, no part in the deeds done in darkness, but rather expose them.
00:35:21.160 So not just avoiding false doctrines, but actually exposing false doctrines.
00:35:25.020 So you're somebody who, for instance, would like the podcast Cultish that sheds light on the false doctrines that have dire consequences of Hinduism or Islam or whatever.
00:35:40.340 Then let me just present this to you for your prayerful consideration. 0.60
00:35:44.900 Do you think it's necessary that Christians, and in this case, pastors like Andrew and I, provide biblical teachings and sermons and podcasts, material and even books on exposing why Christians should not view Muslims as they're on the team?
00:36:06.760 As God's chosen people.
00:36:08.080 They believe in God.
00:36:09.740 It's an Abrahamic God.
00:36:10.940 Well, here's maybe even a better example. 0.94
00:36:13.400 Do you think it's necessary for Christian pastors to do podcasts, sermons, and books
00:36:18.720 on why Mormons are not actually a different subspecies of Christian? 0.73
00:36:27.380 That Mormons are not actually Christian adjacent, but that it's anti-Christ.
00:36:34.480 And you might say, well, that's different.
00:36:36.740 Well, here's the old adage.
00:36:37.820 People say, well, Judaism is just, you know, it's the Bible minus the New Testament.
00:36:43.400 Well, this is what you're missing. Mormonism is actually not the Bible minus the New Testament.
00:36:49.080 It's both the Old and New Testament. Mormonism is the whole Bible. But then it's not that they 0.76
00:36:53.520 take away, but they add. What do they add? The Book of Mormon. And the problem is that the Book
00:36:58.240 of Mormon is the authoritative lens for then reading both the Old and New Testament. And what
00:37:03.840 the Book of Mormon does is it eradicates and overrides and perverts the Bible. Well, think
00:37:09.700 of the same thing with Talmudic Judaism. It's not just that they're half of Christianity,
00:37:15.600 the old minus the new, the Torah, but they're no Christianity because what they have, like
00:37:21.300 Mormonism, instead of Old and New Testament, but overridden by the Book of Mormon, they have only
00:37:27.420 the Old Testament overridden by the Talmud. The Talmud is the equivalent to the Book of Mormon,
00:37:33.960 And the Talmud is especially pernicious.
00:37:37.300 It is as bad as the Book of Mormon, if not arguably worse. 0.98
00:37:41.400 And then the Book of Mormon is a lens for at least the Mormons keep Old and New Testament.
00:37:47.400 But the Book of Mormon is a terrible lens. 0.93
00:37:50.820 Well, in the case of Talmudic Judaism, they have instead of Book of Mormon to pervert Old and New Testament, 0.97
00:37:56.460 you have Talmud, which is even a darker lens to pervert only half. 0.97
00:38:01.500 You're only starting with half the Old Testament and no new.
00:38:04.920 It perverts the new because it says it doesn't exist and it's invalid and it's fake.
00:38:07.940 Exactly.
00:38:08.660 And so my point is this.
00:38:10.320 My point is this.
00:38:11.140 If a podcast like this jars you, I think you should be honestly asking yourself some questions and saying,
00:38:22.040 why am I comfortable listening to James White and the Dividing Line for three hours talking about the problems with Mormonism?
00:38:28.500 but I am so uncomfortable for the last 40 minutes listening to Joel and Andrew talk about
00:38:37.100 Talmudic Judaism. I would say, there's your sign. You, brother and sister in Christ, 0.93
00:38:43.320 have been Psyot. We should be just as comfortable talking about the heresies of Judaism as we are 1.00
00:38:51.380 Mormonism, and we do not currently have a Mormon representative who speaks with every single one
00:39:00.120 of our leading officials in the GOP, except for Thomas Massey, before they come up to voting on
00:39:07.220 a certain issue. So, if anything, because of the political applications, this should be talked
00:39:13.660 about even more. It should be talked about with wisdom, with respect, with kindness, but it should
00:39:20.260 be talked about yeah absolutely and and right i don't no one when uh yeah when when dr white
00:39:27.020 and and the guys in who we love in yeah um i was just using it as an example because he does good
00:39:32.540 work yeah when they're talking about cults yeah when they're talking about mormonism right no one
00:39:38.140 is saying oh these guys are anti-mormon they want mormons to be persecuted they want mormons put in
00:39:42.440 camps exactly right they and and like mormons were persecuted don't you know in the in the 19th
00:39:47.720 century, their leaders were killed. Like Joseph Smith was, what is he, killed in Nauvoo, Illinois,
00:39:53.160 like, and they were driven out of the country, out into the wilderness, right? That, you arguing
00:39:58.480 against Mormonism must mean you think all that stuff was okay. Right. Right. Well, nobody says 1.00
00:40:03.760 that. Nobody says that. When you talk about that, or if you talk about Islam, right? Nobody is
00:40:07.220 saying, well, we should just go kill all the Muslims. Like, no, nobody thinks you're saying 1.00
00:40:11.340 that and why and why because let's just be honest mormons uh don't have a stranglehold yeah they 1.00
00:40:19.180 have a lot of power they do not not to the same degree but not to the same degree and muslims do 0.93
00:40:24.080 not have to the same degree that much the reason why we i believe that we are more fearful to say 0.75
00:40:29.960 things it's not because the christian faith mandates a special place in our heart for
00:40:34.920 judaism i i don't think that's it i really don't think that's it i think we're afraid i think we're
00:40:40.200 afraid. Because in our present culture and political moment, there are lots of false
00:40:46.620 religions. But there is one false religion that has a unique degree of influence over our country.
00:40:52.940 There's one false religion you cannot criticize in America today. And it's that one. And that's
00:40:57.840 why it's worth talking about. Yes. And I think it's for two reasons. One, because of bad Christian
00:41:02.060 theology that has carved out this Christian adjacent space for Israel. And we've spent 0.91
00:41:07.560 lots of time talking about that. But then also in a cultural, that's a theological reason,
00:41:12.700 but in a cultural political reason, in this present moment, Israel has a disproportional, 0.82
00:41:19.500 unique degree of power over our country. And so many Christians are either psyoped and deceived, 0.75
00:41:27.200 so they don't say anything, or they know, but they're afraid. 0.86
00:41:32.560 They don't want to say anything.
00:41:33.480 Right. And what we want to do is carve out a space where, no, we do say something because
00:41:37.780 Christians need to be taught and discipled and informed. But we say something from the scripture.
00:41:42.840 That's why we started with scripture. And we say something with wisdom, poise, not unhinged,
00:41:49.900 not foolish. We want to produce the kind of podcast that you could share with your
00:41:55.460 just be Boomer Grandma.
00:41:56.920 Yeah.
00:41:57.280 And she will probably disagree.
00:42:00.580 Maybe strongly.
00:42:01.360 But at least she wouldn't have a heart attack listening to it.
00:42:05.660 Yeah, absolutely.
00:42:06.800 Thank you guys for tuning in.
00:42:07.960 We hope that this has been a blessing to you.
00:42:10.460 We'll catch you with the next one.
