00:00:40.760 We look back on this and it almost seems quaint.

00:00:44.860 A modern evangelical does not fully appreciate just how destructive this heresy was.

00:00:50.800 We read Galatians and the Jerusalem council in Acts and think that it was all just a big

00:00:57.820 misunderstanding. They really just didn't get it. We sometimes approach it like there was just a

00:01:04.560 little confusion about the transition from the old covenant to the new covenant, but they got it all

00:01:10.960 cleared up. But the reality is Paul did not treat it like some minor misunderstanding.

00:01:16.300 It was a direct attack by Satan on the church, and it was far more dangerous than the attacks

00:01:23.000 from the outside, the kind that Paul, before his conversion, participated in, dragging 0.97

00:01:29.160 Christians away, imprisoning them, beating them, and killing them. 0.89

00:02:13.480 The argument that Paul is making in this book is with the Judaizers. 0.91

00:02:26.820 And I mean, even before we open up the text, I think it's worth talking about what those people were, what did they believe, right?

00:02:34.580 Judaizers were, they were Christians, right?

00:02:39.060 They were Christian teachers, right, people within the church who taught that in order to truly be saved, you had to go into the old covenant. 0.95

00:02:48.560 You had to be circumcised. 0.83

00:02:49.580 You'd be bound to the Mosaic law. 0.95

00:02:51.940 And only then could you truly be a Christian. 0.93

00:02:55.520 And why are they doing this? 0.92

00:02:56.420 Because lots and lots of Gentiles were coming into the church, and they'd see these Gentiles and say, ah, we can't really associate with them until they get circumcised, until they become Jews like us. 0.53

00:03:12.600 You could be covenantally joined to Israel via circumcision. 0.94

00:03:19.440 That I think is worth reading just right there from the beginning, Galatians 3, 1 through 9, right?

00:04:30.040 And the issue, right, it's Jesus plus something else, right?

00:04:33.100 that always is bad that's always wrong but this particularly is especially insidious because it

00:04:40.560 is saying you need to revert to the old covenant the old creation this world that god is destroying

00:04:45.640 that he's about to bring judgment upon right and you're saying that it's by works of the law and

00:04:53.860 this idea of works of the law right that it is this merit-based salvation you know works

00:05:02.600 righteousness and things like that's true they they believed that to that extent but it isn't

00:05:07.320 just simply oh they're adding merit and works to salvation right because they weren't they weren't

00:05:14.180 merely saying uh you need to be faithful in marriage or you need to be a good parent or you

00:05:19.080 need to do this plus faith in jesus yeah but they were speaking to particular works yeah yeah not

00:05:24.760 just the moral law of god which is perpetually binding not for salvation but as a response of

00:05:29.660 gratitude for the free salvation we have by grace. But they weren't doing that. They weren't just

00:05:34.160 adding works to the moral law of God, but particularly they were adding a strict adherence

00:05:39.920 to the ceremonial aspects of the law that were belonging to a particular time

00:05:44.960 under the old covenant that God had clearly communicated was done.

00:05:51.260 Yeah. Yeah. They're adding this. They're saying you need to go back into the old covenant. You

00:05:56.700 to go back into the old world. And Paul uses this phrase in Galatians and in Ephesians. And when we

00:06:02.700 later episodes, we'll go over Ephesians and really, I think, dig into that in detail.

00:06:08.100 But this phrase that he uses, the elementary principles of the world, right? And he talks

00:06:16.360 about this and it's the old creation, the old creation world, not just for Jews, but also 0.96

00:06:22.640 Gentiles, that Christ has delivered you from the elementary principles of the world. He's 0.92

00:06:28.200 delivered you from this old creation. For Jews, it was the law. It was the mosaic law of clean 1.00

00:06:35.800 and unclean and the various practices they had to keep, circumcision and so forth. And for Gentiles, 1.00

00:06:43.180 it was something very similar, right? They all were under law like the law of Moses, but it was 0.90

00:06:49.840 perverted and messed up and distorted. But they all had, right, Greeks and Egyptians and Persians 1.00

00:06:57.540 and, you know, our ancestors in Northern Europe, right? They all had their gods that they,

00:07:04.760 their demons that they sacrificed to and worshipped and that taught them to don't touch this.

00:07:10.940 You can touch that. These things are sacred. These things are profane, right? The entire

00:07:14.640 old creation world had this you still see this in in um you know aboriginal tribes and things

00:07:21.000 things like this or animist religions in africa and right they those are very much old creation

00:07:26.800 type world yeah right and and not even just you know uh on the fringes but you find this in places

00:07:33.240 like india yeah oh absolutely like when you think about uh religion it's like well really that's

00:07:38.620 just what you privately, spiritually hold to. Religion, what we believe about God, whether it's

00:07:46.460 the true God or false gods, whether it's one God or three million gods, what we believe in terms

00:07:53.060 of our religion affects all of life, including, and I wouldn't just say including, perhaps the

00:07:57.640 better word would be especially food, right? In terms of clean and unclean. And so you can eat

00:08:04.420 this. You can't eat that. Don't touch this. Cows are sacred. You know, that kind of stuff. This

00:08:09.660 spirit is very much alive. And there was a good expression of it for a time in Israel under the

00:08:18.200 old covenant, a Christian expression of it that came from Yahweh, the one true God. But there were

00:08:23.220 always perverse expressions of it under the old world before the coming of Christ from the pagan 0.83

00:08:28.520 gods, the false gods. And still today, although not quite as strong because Christ has broken

00:08:33.940 some of that stranglehold, but still there are darker places in the world today where those

00:08:38.840 old gods are still at work, not quite with the power to deceive the nations like they once had,

00:08:45.980 but still at work, still saying, don't have this, don't do that. But within Christ and His covenant,

00:08:53.020 the new covenant, where the Spirit is, there is freedom and freedom in Christ. And those who were

00:09:00.880 outside, whether it be in Hinduism or some of these other things, with those old gods still

00:09:06.240 active at some degree, deceiving people and making it about what goes into a man's mouth

00:09:13.060 and purifies instead of what comes out, his speech. That's to be expected. But within the

00:09:19.020 church, subverting the church, Judaizers still trying to get us back to a works-based righteousness 1.00

00:09:26.220 and particularly a ceremonial old covenant works-based righteousness that was pernicious 0.96

00:09:32.520 in the first century, 2,000 years ago. And if it was terrible then, when there was still at least

00:09:40.080 some overlap of the old covenant, how much worse would it be today? Well, and again, it's the

00:09:46.020 question of, right, what is the purpose of God setting Israel apart to do these things, right? 0.65

00:09:50.600 In the Old Covenant, only Jews had to be circumcised and keep the law. 0.88

00:09:57.720 If a Gentile comes in, a Gentile comes into Israel. 0.94

00:10:01.220 There are many examples of Gentiles operating in Israel that are caught fierce, that know the Lord and trust him. 0.93

00:10:07.480 You didn't have to become a Jew in order to be saved in the Old Covenant. 0.90

00:10:10.800 You could be saved under the Noahic Covenant, and many Gentiles were.

00:10:14.560 We see all sorts of Gentiles that are faithful believers all throughout the Old Testament.

00:10:18.920 but they didn't have to go be circumcised and keep the Mosaic law in order to be saved, right?

00:10:26.600 Israel is set apart for a particular mission under the law, right?

00:10:30.620 That's why they're keeping the law.

00:10:31.700 That's why they have the strictures of the law around them

00:10:35.800 because those are the people in the land that God has chosen.

00:10:39.780 And inside that land is the sanctuary, right?

00:10:41.780 The same in the last episode we talked about, right?

00:10:44.160 You have the world, the land and the sanctuary, right?

00:10:47.840 that's why they're given the law to be that priestly people that ministers to all of the

00:10:52.680 nations. So you're saying that a sojourner, a foreigner could come in and receive citizenship 0.81

00:10:58.740 in Israel, right? The alien, the sojourner is not an illegal immigrant. They are an immigrant,

00:11:04.920 but not illegally, but they would be permitted to come into Israel, expected though to assimilate

00:11:11.560 and expected to obey certain aspects of the law,

00:11:15.400 eternally binding moral aspects.

00:11:17.560 For instance, they would not be allowed to come in

00:11:19.400 and set up high places to demon worship.

00:11:23.100 But they would be, for instance,

00:11:25.300 so they would have to obey the first commandment.

00:11:27.660 Thou shalt have no other gods before Yahweh, the true God.

00:11:30.880 But they could come in legally,

00:11:35.120 attain citizenship with the expectation to assimilate.

00:11:38.100 And part of that assimilation culturally

00:11:39.900 would also be religiously in terms of the moral law of God,

00:11:43.220 but not necessarily some of the ceremonial aspects.

00:12:36.220 It is the things in Leviticus, I think it's Leviticus 19, right?

00:12:43.720 You can't do abominable degenerate sexual practices, right?

00:12:49.520 You can't eat things, you know, strangled or with blood, right?

00:12:54.880 Which is an occult ritual, right?

00:12:57.080 So you can't do pagan worship and you can't do pagan sexual stuff, right? 0.73

00:13:02.780 That's what they said is for the Gentiles. 0.99

00:13:04.700 They didn't say, all right, all these Gentiles need to be circumcised. 1.00

00:13:07.500 All of them need to stop eating pork, right? 0.99

00:13:09.700 They said, no, you could continue being Gentiles, right? 0.99

00:13:11.540 You don't have to become Jews. 0.92

00:13:13.480 You, instead, right, it's the same status that they had, the same way of life that they had in the Old Covenant.

00:13:19.980 You don't have to become Jews, but you do have to become Christians. 0.76

00:13:23.960 And this was the standard in the Old Covenant for Gentile God-fearers as well. 0.82

00:13:30.900 And so, the major threat in Galatians is to say, actually, the new covenant is even more restrictive on the Gentiles than the old covenant was. 0.90

00:13:43.020 The new covenant, you need to go back into and become a Jew and be bound to the law and slavery to the law. 0.91

00:13:50.880 And Paul is saying, Christ has set us free, both Jew and Gentile, both from this. 1.00

00:13:58.120 There's a reason why after 87, after the destruction of the temple, Jewish Christians, 0.99

00:14:04.620 like ethnically Jewish Christians, they didn't circumcise their sons anymore. 0.95

00:14:20.640 And while the temple is still standing, that's why there's this major threat of the Judaizers. 0.94

00:14:31.100 We should circumcise all of these Gentiles coming in. 1.00

00:14:35.040 And it's subverting the church because it's saying, 1.00

00:14:38.100 you aren't really saved unless you're a Jew, right?

00:14:41.680 That is the issue with Paul in the book of Galatians. 1.00

00:14:47.680 And it's a threat to us today, right?

00:14:52.100 Not in the same way, right?

00:14:53.620 not in the same danger, but we're, we're starting when we say, right, well, there is this old 0.61

00:15:00.140 covenant category still of these people called Jews and that God has preserved that category

00:15:04.540 all throughout time. He hasn't ended the old covenant totally and completely. And it, it

00:15:12.040 subverts us in a, in a very similar way, right? Because, right, imagine if, right, you have this

00:15:19.700 perspective you think well we need to keep the jews around forever all right well then you're 0.99

00:15:23.880 not going to evangelize them and try to convert them right and right you can maybe be um subverted 0.99

00:15:29.940 by this aberrant theology that says actually we need to give them billions of dollars and give

00:15:34.440 them their own country and all of these things right of an eight pack handler forever one of

00:15:39.460 our american yeah i think it's a species of of galatianism i think so yeah and and so right but 0.82

00:15:46.240 You read the things that Paul says and it's relevant to us here today because, right, what Paul says in Galatians 3 is the death knell for this aberrant theology just like it was to the Judaizers, right?

00:16:02.240 So this idea of, you know, whether it's Nikki Haley or Mike Johnson or, you know, John Hagee or whomever saying we need to bless Israel because, you know, whoever blesses Israel, God is going to bless. 0.77

00:16:18.320 Whoever curses Israel, God is going to curse.

00:16:20.580 That promise to Abraham and to his seed, right? 0.80

00:16:24.280 They assume that.

00:16:25.240 Well, that's, Paul says the opposite.

00:16:27.460 Which is, I mean, it's absolutely true.

00:16:29.060 That's why I always do my best to bless Christians.

00:16:36.380 In Galatians 3.29, right?

00:16:37.980 He says, if you are Christ, then you are Abraham's offspring and heirs according to the promise.

00:16:44.880 It is incontrovertible that that's, who are the promises to Abraham for today? 0.97

00:16:51.160 It's not for a nation state on the Eastern Mediterranean.

00:16:58.860 it is to Christ, the true Israel, the faithful Israel, and to those united to him by faith,

00:17:08.500 right? Both Jew and Gentile. In Christ, there's neither Jew nor Gentile. They're united to him 0.94

00:17:13.080 by faith. And that is who the heir of the promises that God has made, because that's always the

00:17:19.880 objection you get from a lot of well-meaning Christian folks that have been psyoped by this

00:17:28.500 thing where it's like, well, Andrew, right? God says we got to bless Israel, right? We got to

00:17:33.940 bless Israel. You know, Jerusalem is the apple of my eye, right? Well, it is. And, you know,

00:17:41.960 just the other day when we were in church, we were in Jerusalem, right? We were in the apple

00:17:46.980 of God's eye, right? All of these, I mean, they say, well, he's making an everlasting covenant,

00:17:52.900 an everlasting promise. And you're saying that he's breaking that promise, that it's gone to

00:17:58.140 somebody else. And I'm saying, no, it has not. It's still to Israel, right? It's still to Abraham's

00:18:06.840 seed, to Abraham's descendants, right? Paul is saying, who is that? That is Christ and his people.

00:21:06.940 And that's what we're doing by God's grace.

00:21:08.860 and we're doing it with love, we're doing it with gospel preaching, but we're also doing it with

00:21:14.000 ethical, biblical, political expressions and applications and all these different ways in

00:21:19.460 the civil sphere, the church, ecclesiastical sphere with word and sacrament as in the sphere

00:21:25.160 of the home, as fathers and mothers, catechizing our children, not giving them over to the state

00:21:30.660 and public school and training them to fear the Lord in all these different ways. What we're doing

00:21:36.120 is, you know, march on, pray on, you know, we're gaining ground, you know, and little by little, 0.96

00:21:41.760 we are inheriting, the meek shall inherit the earth, not just heaven, but the earth as co-heirs

00:21:48.800 with Christ, the promise is ours, and little by little, the knowledge of the glory of God will 0.96

00:21:55.540 cover the whole earth as the waters cover the sea, and the meek will inherit the whole earth,

00:22:00.560 the nations belong to Christ and His people, and little by little by little, the nations are 0.96

00:22:05.780 becoming Christian. The goal is not to build a third temple, which would be an abomination 0.96

00:22:15.580 Yeah, because what would you be doing? You'd be offering sacrifices after the sacrifice

00:22:21.420 So, the goal is not to offend God. The goal is to please God. The goal is the true third temple,

00:22:27.800 which is made with living stones, not brick and mortar, but living stones. Those living stones

00:22:33.180 being the saints, those with faith in Jesus Christ and have union with him by the Spirit.

00:22:38.180 The goal is that that temple would not just have a specific geographic locale, but that it would

00:22:43.920 fill the whole world. And that the whole earth would be filled with this third temple, aka the

00:22:50.020 church. And that God would be pleased with that. And that really is, you've said it several times,

00:22:55.240 but it's all the way back to Genesis 1. That's the original mandate. It's Adam's eschaton. He

00:23:00.820 had an eschaton. And then the second Adam, Christ, also, and those who have union with him, we also

00:23:07.100 have an eschaton. And it's the same as Adam's in the conceptual form, but just a greater catalytic

00:23:14.680 exponential degree. Adam, it was not- It was glorious, but it's even more-

00:23:19.200 Right. Adam was to be fruitful multiply. So, they were to multiply worshipers of God,

00:23:25.360 the triune God, and to train them and teach them in the ways of God. But image bearers filling the 0.88

00:23:32.940 earth, but also the whole creation was good, but the whole creation wasn't a paradise. Adam was

00:23:40.120 actually formed from the dust of the ground in the wilderness outside of the garden and then placed

00:23:44.620 into the garden. So, the goal was one, multiply worshipers and two, expand the temple, expand the

00:23:52.760 garden so that the whole earth would eventually be a garden and the whole garden that covers the

00:23:58.200 whole earth would be filled with worshipers. So it would be a global temple filled with

00:24:03.980 worshipers of the triune God. And we are doing that now through the eschaton given to the second 1.00

00:24:10.880 Adam, Christ. That's now our promise. And where Adam, the first Adam failed, the second Adam has 0.79

00:24:18.460 succeeded and his success is ours as we have union with him by grace through faith. And anything

00:24:24.960 that detours from that is a perversion of the gospel. Yeah. I mean, the issue that Paul has

00:24:34.360 is, right, if this is true what Paul is saying, and it is true what Paul is saying, that the 0.97

00:24:42.120 Gentiles are co-heirs of these promises, right? Not by being circumcised, right? Because if they're 0.68

00:24:48.280 circumcised, you're no longer Gentiles, right? They're Jews now because the covenant wasn't just 1.00

00:24:52.740 genetic. It was a covenant, right? You could be grafted into the old covenant too. Gentiles could 0.98

00:37:15.600 the old minus the new, the Torah, but they're no Christianity because what they have, like

00:37:21.300 Mormonism, instead of Old and New Testament, but overridden by the Book of Mormon, they have only

00:37:27.420 the Old Testament overridden by the Talmud. The Talmud is the equivalent to the Book of Mormon,

00:37:33.960 And the Talmud is especially pernicious.

00:37:37.300 It is as bad as the Book of Mormon, if not arguably worse. 0.98

00:37:41.400 And then the Book of Mormon is a lens for at least the Mormons keep Old and New Testament.
