00:01:45.460 and on this episode we're going to be talking about the freemasons and how it's not okay
00:01:50.600 for Christians to be masons but before we get to that I want to thank you for tuning in thank you 0.90
00:01:56.840 for liking and subscribing and following and all of that good stuff and remember that we are
00:02:01.360 brothers and sisters in Christ first and foremost leave your comments below we'll get some of them
00:02:05.680 after the show. On the 24th of June 1717 four London lodgers gathered at the Goose and Gridiron
00:02:15.540 tavern in St Paul's churchyard. There they declared themselves a Grand Lodge, the first
00:02:22.920 in the world, and elected a gentleman named Anthony Sayer as their Grand Master. 21 years
00:02:30.820 later, a Pope forbade every Catholic on earth from joining them. Where did this brotherhood
00:02:36.540 really come from? Is it as ancient as its legends claim, descended from the builders
00:02:42.120 of Solomon's Temple or from the Knights Templar? How does it operate today and how many still
00:02:49.220 attend? And why has the church forbidden her children to enter its lodges for the last
00:02:54.760 three centuries? The story begins not in a tavern but on the building sites of medieval
00:03:01.600 England. The masons who raised the cathedrals worked from a lodge, a workshop where they
00:03:07.940 cut stone, kept their tools, and took their meals. And at York Minster, written rules governed their
00:03:15.440 hours in the lodge, as early as 1370. The most skilled carved freestone, fine stone for ornament,
00:03:24.020 and the freestone mason is the usual explanation of the word freemason. These were Catholic
00:03:31.280 craftsmen through and through. Their oldest surviving text, a Middle English poem known as
00:03:37.660 Regius, manuscript written in the first half of the 15th century, honours the four crowned martyrs,
00:03:44.940 the patron saints of Masons, and teaches its readers how to behave in church. And in the old
00:03:51.540 charges read to work in Masons for generations afterwards, the first duty was always the same,
00:03:58.760 that you be true to God and Holy Church and use no error or heresy. The same manuscripts wrapped
00:04:06.560 the trade in legend, tracing it back to Euclid, and to a great assembly of masons under the Saxon
00:04:13.580 king, Athelstan. Here is the first misconception, that Freemasonry is as old as the pyramids or
00:04:20.320 the Temple of Solomon. These were pious legends, and once later Masonic writers had embroiled them,
00:04:27.860 even the Masonic scholar Albert Mackey called the result little more than a collection of fables.
00:04:33.180 The real transformation came in Scotland. In 1598 and 1599, William Shaw, master of works to King
00:04:44.060 James VI, issued statutes for the Masons of the kingdom, ranking the lodges of Edinburgh,
00:04:51.280 Kilwinning and Stirling, and requiring them to keep written records. The historian David
00:04:58.680 Stevenson argues that Shaw, in effect, created Freemasonry, establishing lodges with the grades
00:05:05.080 of entered apprentice and fellow craft, which over the following century admitted more and more men
00:05:10.740 who had never cut a stone. In 1641, Edinburgh masons serving with the Scottish army at Newcastle
00:05:18.420 admitted Robert Moray, a future founder of the Royal Society. In the earliest recorded initiation
00:05:26.800 of a gentleman on English soil. In England, the story took a different turn. On the 16th of October
00:05:34.720 1646, the antiquary Elias Ashmaul wrote in his diary, I was made a Freemason at Warrington in
00:05:43.180 Lancashire. A Victorian researcher who studied the men Ashmaul named found no evidence that a single
00:05:50.240 working mason was among them, and from the 1660s the evidence of gentlemen being made Freemasons
00:05:56.060 grows. Here is the second misunderstanding, that Freemasonry is simply the medieval builder's
00:06:02.900 guild carried on. In Scotland, the line from working lodge to gentleman's lodge is real,
00:06:08.820 but the Freemasonry the world knows today, with its grand lodges and printed constitutions,
00:06:14.400 is, as the Catholic Encyclopedia put it, a new order of no greater antiquity than the first
00:06:20.920 quarter of the 18th century. Which brings us back to the Goose and Gridiron. The only account of
00:06:27.260 that meeting was written by the Reverend James Anderson more than 20 years later, and some
00:06:32.520 historians now argue that the Grand Lodge was really founded in 1721, when the Duke of Montagu
00:06:39.220 became its first noble Grand Master, though others defend the traditional date. Either way,
00:06:45.660 the decisive text came in 1723. Anderson's constitutions set aside the old charge to be
00:06:53.840 true to God and Holy Church, and obliged a mason only to that religion in which all men agree,
00:07:00.420 leaving their particular opinions to themselves. From London, the fraternity spread with astonishing
00:07:07.380 speed. Grand Lodges followed in Ireland in 1725 and in Scotland in 1736, and in 1813 the London
00:07:17.020 Grand Lodge merged with a rival, founded in 1751 by Irish and Scottish Masons, to form
00:07:24.780 the United Grand Lodge of England. In America, Benjamin Franklin reprinted the Constitutions
00:07:33.020 in 1734, and George Washington was initiated in Virginia in 1752. On the continent, the fraternity
00:07:41.600 acquired a grande pedigree. In 1737, the Chevalier Andrew Michael Ramsey, a Scotsman in Paris,
00:07:50.460 told his brethren that their ancestors were the Crusaders, and in the 1750s, the German Baron
00:07:57.400 Karl Gotthelf von Hund built an entire right on the baseless claim that Freemasonry descended
00:08:04.080 from the Knights Templar. This is the third misconception, and the most stubborn. Pope
00:08:08.900 Clement V dissolved the Templars in 1312, and no record links any order of Knights to
00:08:15.340 Freemasonry before Ramsey's speech more than four centuries later. Rome had been watching.
00:08:20.580 In April 1738, Pope Clement XII issued the bull in Ementi Apostolus Specula.
00:08:29.100 It described men of any religion or sect, satisfied with the appearance of natural probity,
00:08:36.420 bound together by an oath upon the Holy Bible to keep an inviolable silence about all that they do in secret together. 0.61
00:08:44.480 Any Catholic who joined was excommunicated by the act itself.
00:08:49.920 Pope after Pope renewed the ban, and in 1884, Leo XIII devoted an entire encyclical, Humanum Genus, to the subject,
00:09:00.120 charging the bishops to tear away the mask from Freemasonry.
00:09:04.460 Yet he judged the society as a whole, not each member, granting that not a few, though guilty of joining,
00:09:11.640 had no part in its crimes and knew nothing of its final aims.
00:09:16.060 so why such severity events in catholic europe seemed to confirm the pope's fears
00:09:23.420 in 1877 the grand orient of france dropped the requirement of belief in god and the english
00:09:30.200 grand lodge broke off relations a breach that has never healed between 1900 and 1904 lodges
00:09:38.360 of the grand orient helped compile some 20 000 secret files on army officers for the minister
00:09:44.240 of war, General Louis André, noting, among other things, who went to Mass, so that practising
00:09:51.120 Catholics could be denied promotion. When the Affaire des Fiches was exposed in October 1904,
00:09:58.080 it cost the minister his post. So how does Freemasonry operate today?
00:10:02.640 There is no world headquarters and no supreme master. Each Grand Lodge is sovereign within
00:10:08.240 its own territory, usually a country or a state, and decides for itself which others it recognizes
00:10:14.580 as regular. The United Grand Lodge of England, led since 1967 by His Royal Highness Prince Edward,
00:10:22.700 the Duke of Kent, admits only men over 18 who can affirm a belief in a supreme being,
00:10:28.960 while women have Grand Lodges of their own. Now let's take a word from our sponsors. 0.99
00:10:33.360 The modern food industry looked at our food and thought, hey, you know what beef needs?
00:10:37.860 more corn syrup, soy, preservatives, and ingredients that no one can actually pronounce.
00:10:44.240 It's almost impressive. If you'd rather eat something that your great-grandfather would
00:10:49.000 actually recognize as food, then check out Paleo Valley's 100% grass-fed beef sticks.
00:10:56.020 They're made from 100% grass-fed and grass-finished beef, packed with protein, and they're the kind
00:11:02.760 of snack that you can keep in your truck, your office, or your backpack without feeling like
00:11:07.660 you're eating edible chemistry. So use code NXR at checkout for 15% off, or you can just click the
00:11:16.880 link in the description below to get started. That's Paleo Valley, because food should have
00:11:22.700 ingredients, not a rap sheet. Joining is now strikingly open. A man can register his interest
00:11:29.620 online and a local Freemason will contact him. Once accepted, he passes through three ceremonies,
00:11:36.020 which English Freemasons themselves describe as one-act plays, becoming in turn an entered
00:11:43.140 apprentice, a fellow craft, and a master mason. Members wear the aprons of their old trade,
00:11:50.120 pay dues, averaging about ÂŁ200 a year, and dine together after their meetings. How many are there?
00:11:57.980 Estimates of worldwide membership range from 2 to 6 million.
00:12:02.680 The United Grand Lodge of England counts around 170,000 members in more than 7,000 lodges.
00:12:10.500 In the United States, membership peaked at more than 4 million around 1960
00:12:16.160 and had fallen below 870,000 by 2023.
00:12:21.660 There is the fourth misconception, that Freemasons secretly rule the world today.
00:12:28.500 In Catholic Europe a century or more ago, the lodges did wield real political power,
00:12:33.480 as Leo XIII warned, and the Affaires de Fiche showed.
00:12:38.680 But a society that has lost nearly four in every five of its American members in two generations
00:12:44.920 is hardly an invisible empire.
00:12:47.960 Suspicion lingers all the same.
00:12:50.340 Since December 2025, London's Metropolitan Police have required officers and staff to declare whether they are or have been Freemasons,
00:13:01.420 as an inquiry into the unsolved murder of a private investigator had recommended,
00:13:06.220 and in February 2026, the High Court threw out the Freemasons' challenge.
00:13:12.260 And the Church?
00:13:14.360 Here we meet the last misconception,
00:13:16.920 that she quietly lifted her ban in 1983,
00:13:19.920 when the new code of canon law stopped naming Freemasonry
00:13:22.960 and spoke only of associations that plot against the Church.
00:13:26.840 In fact, on the 26th of November that year,
00:13:30.840 the day before the new code took effect,
00:13:32.540 the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith,
00:13:35.040 under Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger,
00:13:37.220 with the approval of Pope John Paul II,
00:13:39.880 declared the Church's judgment unchanged,
00:13:41.960 because Masonic principles have always been irreconcilable with her doctrine.
00:13:48.180 The faithful who enroll in Masonic associations, it's said,
00:13:51.880 are in a state of grave sin and may not receive Holy Communion.
00:13:56.220 In 2023, answering a bishop in the Philippines whose faithful were joining the lodges in growing numbers,
00:14:02.980 the Dicastry for the Doctrine of the Faith, with Pope Francis' approval,
00:14:06.400 repeated that active membership is forbidden and asked that every parish be taught why.
00:14:13.880 So let us answer our questions. Freemasonry did not descend from Solomon's Temple or the Templars.
00:14:20.820 It grew out of the lodges of medieval Catholic stonemasons, took shape in Scotland around 1600,
00:14:27.900 drew an English gentleman during the 17th century, and was organised into grand lodges in London
00:14:33.780 between 1717 and 1721.
00:14:37.920 Today, it is a loose network of sovereign grand lodgers
00:14:41.360 with between two and six million members,
00:14:44.840 far smaller than in its heyday and more open than ever,
00:14:47.720 though it still calls itself private rather than secret.
00:14:52.440 And the church forbids her children to join
00:14:55.260 because she has always judged its principles
00:14:57.680 irreconcilable with the faith.
00:15:00.800 What Freemasons actually believe
00:15:02.460 and why the church judges it so seemingly harshly
00:15:05.400 is a story for another episode.
00:15:08.000 So here's what Christians should understand from all of this.
00:15:11.720 The first is that the church's judgment is settled.
00:15:15.040 From Clement XII to the note of 2023,
00:15:18.860 the teaching has never wavered. 0.88
00:15:20.420 A Catholic may not join a Masonic lodge
00:15:22.960 and one who knowingly does so may not receive Holy Communion.
00:15:28.840 Good works, however generous, do not change the nature
00:15:32.180 of the society that performs them. The second is that a Christian needs no secret oaths.
00:15:38.720 Christ told the high priest, I speak openly to the world, and in secret have I said nothing.
00:15:45.420 The catechism teaches that an oath must be refused when it is required for purposes contrary
00:15:50.580 to the dignity of persons or to the ecclesial communion. And Leo XIII urged that the young be
00:15:58.520 taught never to join any society without the knowledge of their parents or the advice of their
00:16:03.660 parish priest. The third is that Christ is not one option among many. A brotherhood that asks a man
00:16:11.780 to keep his faith to himself cannot be squared with the Lord who said, I am the way, the truth,
00:16:17.940 and the life. No man cometh unto the Father but by me. The fourth is that we must be truthful
00:16:25.740 even about those we oppose. For 12 years many Catholics were duped by the hoaxer Leo Taxil
00:16:33.000 whom I described in my episode on Satanism until he confessed in 1897 that his tales of devil
00:16:39.920 worship in the lodges were pure invention. Remember we are taught that thou shalt not bear
00:16:45.960 false witness against thy neighbour. Many Freemasons are ordinary men drawn by friendship and charity
00:16:52.020 and by engaging truthfully, we maximise our chances of conversion.
00:16:57.320 And the fifth is that the Church is no enemy of brotherhood.
00:17:00.600 The first Masons were her sons,
00:17:02.740 and Leo XIII urged the Catholic guilds of workmen to be restored.
00:17:07.320 The fellowship men seek in the Lodge is offered freely in the Church.
00:17:11.960 For as our Lord said,
00:17:13.700 One is your Master, even Christ, and all ye are brethren.
00:17:18.560 let's take a look at some of the comments now looking at the episode on poland having zero
00:17:28.140 crime super cladding says thank you again for a better perspective on the things happening
00:17:34.400 that are contributing to the destruction of the west you are more than welcome we do what we can
00:17:39.000 here rob knee said thank you for what you do for all of us god bless you that's very sweet
00:17:47.480 colette said awesome episode father calvin so informative thank you and god bless you
00:17:52.180 god bless you too all of you dust branch said calvin's a good man thank you i try to be we
00:17:58.560 all strive to be good men right we all try to be better mirrors of christ
00:18:04.140 heimdall said first hype first comment yeah well thank you for that um it seems unfortunately or
00:18:14.440 otherwise that we must place ethnos first christianity first ideally maybe but it only
00:18:20.040 succeeds in the right hands preaching jesus didn't fix africa or haiti actually preaching
00:18:25.040 jesus fixed much of africa for for quite a long time um but you're i mean yeah christianity first
00:18:30.720 absolutely everything else comes second everything comes after christ including ethnos but our faith
00:18:36.280 is part of our ethnicity you know it's it's a it's an ancestry lineage it's a it's a people
00:18:41.740 in a place with a faith and a language and a culture so it's it's part of it jerry
00:18:49.240 pauliac said polish person here saying we didn't let mass migration is a misnomer we kind of didn't
00:18:56.560 have to they don't want to come to poland because there are no social benefits here almost none
00:19:02.180 besides subsidy for kids that's draining our economy so yeah it's not like we did any big
00:19:09.360 fight. The border wall is on Russia's side, not Carpathia or Germany for a reason. Migrants 0.56
00:19:16.580 weren't it. Yeah, he makes a fair point. If you don't give away freebies to everyone that comes 1.00
00:19:22.660 in, you have fewer people coming in. Makes sense, right? Let's take a look at some of the comments
00:19:27.100 from the episode on Rome, Athens, and Galgotha. Brightest Angel City said, thank you for your
00:19:32.240 voice, Calvin. Thank you for that comment. James Neves said, wow, such an enriching rendering.
00:19:39.000 Thank you, Father Calvin Robinson, Crusader.
00:19:43.700 Thank you.
00:19:44.580 God bless you.
00:19:45.260 Very kind.
00:19:46.640 Eric John Jorgensen said, Hallelujah.
00:19:49.440 Collette said, Such a stunningly informative show.
00:19:52.180 Thank you.
00:19:52.740 God bless you and your team, Father Calvin.
00:19:54.520 Thank you.
00:19:55.100 And I'll pass that on to the team.
00:19:58.920 Baptist702 said, I would say the lighting is too bright on you this time, Father Calvin.
00:20:04.180 The former dimmer lighting fits you best.
00:20:06.380 Thanks.
00:20:06.760 I'll take that into consideration.
00:20:07.800 we haven't changed anything so maybe it's post production but i'll have a look thanks uh miguel
00:20:14.960 logistics said science rose because of the european nobility constantly warring against
00:20:20.440 one another had they not needed to compete and war the nobility would not have invested a penny
00:20:26.280 in any of it yeah perhaps i mean there are always um multiple competing motivating factors but uh
00:20:32.740 you know you're not entirely wrong there um at 25 25 do you'll say honor the way we say honor
00:20:40.320 i'm not sure if you'll pronounce the h or not in that word uh so we say honor yeah with a
00:20:47.140 with a silent h i've never one i've never really understood why there's a silent h in h you would
00:20:52.440 expect it to be h um but yeah i don't think we say honor no we say honor and why do some words
00:20:59.340 have a silent H. One of the things I've noticed since coming out here is, you know, we say
00:21:02.780 herb in England, Americans say herb with no H. It's all, I don't get it. Very well could
00:21:11.600 be a dialect thing, as the American accent is actually the original English accent before
00:21:15.040 we split off from Britain. To some extent, the southern accent is a kind of drawn out
00:21:20.500 extended version of some old English accents, but remember there is no English accent. There
00:21:25.220 are as many dialects in England as there are in America, which not all due to America, 0.73
00:21:32.120 but a majority of the reason the Brits developed the accents you all did is because of wanting
00:21:36.120 to spite Americans and have more aristocratic dialect.
00:21:39.340 Yeah, I'm not entirely sure that's true either.
00:21:42.020 I don't think most of the nobility in England really cared for America.
00:21:46.580 So I don't think, you know, up until post-Edwardian Britain, people actually paid much attention
00:21:51.520 to what was going on in America.
00:21:53.520 Britain was a response of Britain.
00:21:55.220 Now it's a response to America. Everywhere it is, because America is the superpower. But prior to the Great War and World War II, I don't think that's the case at all. 0.53
00:22:05.120 And Elsa said, the only identity that matters is Catholic. All the rest belongs to the material world. Our Catholic identity is over genes, over frontiers, over man, traditions, over languages, over flags, over all. 0.80
00:22:20.680 as catholic i identify me better with the lone male juror in lindsey c because his catholic faith
00:22:29.080 and moral principles as the people in my own race or in my own country yeah amen to that our
00:22:34.260 identity is in christ first and foremost and you're right and that means in his church thank
00:22:39.500 you for the lovely comments keep them coming we'll read more next week now let's take a moment to pray
00:22:43.700 in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen grant we beseech thee merciful
00:22:49.700 Lord, to thy faithful people, pardon and peace, that they may be cleansed from all their sins
