00:03:01.720 Genesis, Jacob struggles through the night with a mysterious stranger, and at daybreak he receives

00:03:08.020 a new name. Quote, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel. For as a prince hast thou

00:03:16.840 power with God and with men, and has prevailed. Jacob called the place Peniel, for I have seen

00:03:26.500 God face to face. From one man the name passed to his twelve sons, the children of Israel,

00:03:34.580 and from them to a nation, called at Sinai to be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.

00:03:41.840 Here is the first misunderstanding, that Israel and Jew have the same meaning.

00:03:50.040 They have not. After Solomon's death, the kingdom split in two. The ten northern tribes kept the

00:03:57.200 name Israel, while the south became the kingdom of Judah. And in the 8th century before Christ,

00:04:03.480 the northern kingdom was swept away by Assyria. Our word Jew descends from Judah. Only later,

00:06:05.400 my kingdom is not of this world. And the epistle to the Hebrews reminds Christians that

00:06:11.240 here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come.

00:06:17.160 All this sounds very straightforward. So why does a nation full of Christ deniers insist upon using

00:06:23.460 the very word which unifies all Christians. After the Romans destroyed the temple in the year 70,

00:06:30.600 the priestly party of the Sadducees vanished. And the Judaism that survived grew from the

00:06:37.880 teaching of the Pharisees. Historians call it Rabbinic Judaism. In its usage, Israel means the

00:06:46.060 Jewish people themselves, the descendants of Jacob together with those who convert under

00:06:50.980 rabbinic law and it's Israel is their land. A baptised Gentile is not Israel at all and the

00:06:59.260 church's claim to be the true Israel is rejected in this teaching. Here is the heart of the matter

00:07:04.540 though. Each community uses the same word for itself drawn from the same scriptures and each

00:07:11.800 defines it in a way that the other cannot accept. For the church the Israel of God is gathered by

00:07:18.720 faith in Christ. For rabbinic Judaism, Israel is the people formed by birth and by the covenant

00:07:26.420 of the law in which the gospel has no place. Nothing shows the collision more vividly than

00:07:32.620 the case of brother Daniel. Oswald Rufiessen was born to Jewish parents in Poland in 1922.

00:07:41.340 During the Nazi occupation, by the account of Israel's own Supreme Court, he rescued hundreds

00:07:46.400 of fellow Jews from the Gestapo. While hiding in a convent in 1942, he became a Catholic.

00:07:54.640 And after the war, he joined the Carmelites. In 1958, he moved to Israel and claimed citizenship

00:08:01.000 as a Jew under the law of return. In December 1962, the Supreme Court refused him by four votes

00:08:09.200 to one. Every judge accepted that under rabbinic law, he was still a Jew. Yet the majority held

00:08:16.860 that for the secular purposes of the law, Jew and Christian are, quote, a contradiction in terms.

00:08:25.280 In 1970, the Knesset wrote the principle into statute, a Jew for the purposes of return is one

00:08:32.740 born of a Jewish mother or converted to Judaism who is not a member of another religion. An atheist

00:08:38.980 may move there. A Jew who confesses Jesus as the Messiah may not. Yet when Christ saw

00:08:45.740 Nathaniel approaching, he said, Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile. By

00:08:51.660 the measure of the gospel, brother Daniel was an Israelite indeed. By the measure of

00:08:56.060 the state, he was not a Jew at all. Further, how did a modern state with its creation

00:09:01.740 orchestrated by Christians come to bear this ancient name? Political Zionism was founded

00:09:07.060 by Theodor Herzl, a secular journalist in Vienna. Most orthodox rabbis at first opposed his movement,

00:09:14.480 but they still do, believing that only God and the Messiah could restore Israel to its land.

00:09:20.320 In January 1904, Herzl sought the support of Pope Saint Pius X. The Pope would not prevent

00:09:27.720 the Jews from going to Jerusalem, but would never sanction it, and he gave his reason in one

00:09:33.540 sentence. Quote, the Jews have not recognized our Lord, therefore we cannot recognize the Jewish

00:09:40.740 people. End quote. This exemplifies the Christian stance perfectly, as the Pope bound the recognition

00:09:49.240 of the people to the recognition of the Messiah. When statehood came on the 14th of May 1948,

00:09:57.080 the name had been settled only two days earlier.

00:10:01.280 Most had expected Judea,

00:10:03.220 but historic Judea seemed unlikely to fall within the new borders,

00:10:07.300 and Zion was merely a hill in Jerusalem.

00:13:12.740 that the promises made to Israel were fulfilled in Christ

00:13:19.900 In 1985, the Holy See instructed Catholics to view the existence and policies of the State of Israel

00:14:54.380 So here is what Christians should understand from all of this.

00:14:56.900 The first is that our citizenship lies in the Israel of God.

00:15:02.800 Baptism makes us an heir of Abraham.

00:15:06.940 Baptism makes us heirs of Abraham and sharers in the dignity of Israel.

00:15:12.260 And our true homeland is the heavenly Jerusalem, which is the mother of us all.

00:15:17.900 No earthly flag can add to that inheritance or take it away.

00:15:21.740 The second is that we must not confuse the Israel of the Bible,

00:15:25.060 the Jewish people, and the modern state. Supporting or criticizing a government in

00:15:31.400 the Middle East with a name we recognize is a judgment of a secular body, not an article of faith.

00:15:39.540 The third is that the moral law binds every nation equally. The catechism lists the state

00:15:46.100 among the idols men set in place of God, and its teaching on just war, on sparing non-combatants,

00:15:52.660 and unwelcoming the stranger applies to Israel, to her enemies, and to every nation alike.

00:15:59.560 To idolise a state offends the first commandment.

00:16:03.620 To despise a people offends charity.

00:16:07.400 The fourth is that hatred has no place in a Christian heart.

00:16:11.940 St. Paul warned the Gentile branches grafted onto Israel's olive tree,

00:16:18.120 charity seeks the salvation of every soul and so we pray as the church prays that all

00:16:25.640 may come to know christ in order to be saved through him and the fifth is to remember the

00:16:32.800 christians of the holy land catholics and orthodox arab and hebrew speaking who are too often

00:16:38.700 forgotten by christians abroad saint peter called the faithful lively stones pray for them and pray

00:16:46.680 for the peace of Jerusalem. They shall prosper that love thee. Jacob received the name Israel

00:16:53.260 at daybreak after a long night of struggle in the place where he saw God face to face.

00:16:59.520 The church prays that every soul be joined to that name by baptism and that everyone

00:17:06.740 will one day see that face in Christ.
