00:00:00.000 The modern view of children is that they're financial leeches.
00:00:04.360 You pay for their schooling and you pay for their sports and then you pay for their college
00:00:10.500 and then you pay for their wedding and then finally they're off the payroll and you can breathe.
00:00:17.020 No, in, you know, just a few generations ago, we had family businesses
00:00:21.700 and the children immediately were taught to be productive in the family business.
00:00:30.960 Radical Christian nationalist pastor, Joel Webben.
00:00:34.860 Joel Webben.
00:00:36.120 I'm going to talk about Joel Webben.
00:00:37.920 Joel Webben is an accident.
00:00:39.840 all right we are back with the third and final episode between myself and joe garracy from
00:01:03.140 backwards planning financial we're talking about how christians can be successful in building
00:01:08.820 generational wealth so that they can leave an inheritance to their children's children.
00:01:13.740 In this episode, right out of the gate, I wanted to start by mentioning an individual,
00:01:18.240 namely Caleb Hammer. Caleb Hammer does his weekly financial audit. This is a guy who does media
00:01:25.260 and podcasting. He's actually local in the greater Austin area. We're just north of Austin with NXR
00:01:32.260 Studios. And so he's in our backyard and you've probably seen, it's wildly popular. He gets a
00:01:38.620 ton of views where he's bringing in people who basically, you know, it's almost like the financial
00:01:48.060 version of Jerry Springer, right? He's bringing in different couples, you know, or individuals
00:01:53.760 every single week and going through their expenses and what is their income and how much debt do they
00:01:58.960 have, all these kinds of things. And every single episode, you know, is pretty much, wow, you're
00:02:04.320 stupid you know wow you're an idiot um and to be fair to caleb hammer the people that he is 1.00
00:02:09.680 bringing on the show they kind of are uh irresponsible uh foolish uh bad financial 1.00
00:02:17.380 planning bad spending habits bad budgeting all those kinds of things um he gives a lot of good
00:02:24.520 practical advice so we're not really going to be critiquing his financial advice in this episode
00:02:30.000 that we're basically doing the opposite of what we did in the first two episodes. In the first
00:02:34.420 two episodes, we talked about how there is an epidemic of people who are virtuous. They are
00:02:41.200 Christians, they are conservatives, they have families, they love children, they have multiple
00:02:46.560 children, and they're poor, right? That they have virtue, but spiritual maturity and Christian 0.96
00:02:54.420 character does not necessarily transfer automatically into financial savviness. It
00:03:02.300 doesn't necessarily translate to being able to build wealth. You can be a virtuous person and
00:03:08.860 still be financially foolish. Maybe you're doing all the basics, right? Living beneath your means 0.96
00:03:14.540 and trying to save and not being lavish in your spending. But that doesn't mean that you're wise
00:03:19.060 and strategic in your investing. It doesn't mean that you're going to be wealthy. Well, today I
00:03:24.400 kind of want to you know pick a little bit on Caleb Hammer his advice is actually from the
00:03:29.940 financial practical side is good advice the problem is the opposite of what we've addressed
00:03:35.740 virtuous people that don't understand financial investments well what Caleb Hammer is doing is
00:03:42.740 being someone who understands financial investments and financial practices but not a virtuous person
00:03:49.040 it's not just the guest he has on his show for this financial audit he himself is a progressive
00:03:56.680 when it comes to his character when it comes to his values he does not see it as being valuable
00:04:03.360 to have traditional families to have traditional values to seek to be fruitful multiply seeing
00:04:10.020 children as as a moral obligation for the good of the world and the glory of god seeing children as
00:04:17.680 a blessing. And so most of the people that he has on the show and even his own counsel to these
00:04:23.820 people is kind of avoiding children or holding off on having kids because children are a financial
00:04:31.320 burden. So that's what I want to talk to you, Joe, about in today's episode is what do we say
00:04:37.640 as Christians that, yeah, we want to get ahead financially. We want to be wise. We want to save.
00:04:43.100 we want to invest, we want to build wealth, and maybe you could do more of it by not having
00:04:49.020 children. But for us as Christians, opting out of children is not actually something that we
00:04:55.460 want to advocate for. We want to see people build wealth and also build the wealth that is their
00:05:01.760 family, that is the next generation, their legacy, their lineage, so that they actually have someone
00:05:07.800 to pass this wealth down to. So we're going to be talking about the financial mistakes,
00:05:13.100 that are killing large families, the avoidable financial decisions that turn children from a
00:05:19.580 blessing into a burden. So I'm going to give it to you just to begin giving some initial thoughts.
00:05:26.540 What are some of the pitfalls that people like us who are conservative, who are Christian,
00:05:31.960 who see children as a blessing, what are some of the mistakes that they're making in their
00:05:36.660 financial habits that are causing these children to be a financial liability instead of a blessing
00:05:45.780 great uh so the modern view of children is that they're financial leeches right and that you pay
00:05:55.500 for their schooling and you pay for their sports and then you pay for their college and then you
00:06:01.760 pay for their wedding and then finally they're off the payroll and you can breathe uh no in you
00:06:09.380 know just a few generations ago we had family businesses and the children immediately were
00:06:15.960 taught to be productive in the family business and there's i'm thinking of uh john moody who
00:06:24.520 started a coffee company specifically to teach his kids entrepreneurship. So we can actually
00:06:33.160 have them be productive members of the family instead of leeches. What can they do to help
00:06:38.720 grow the business, help grow the finances for the family? They are workers. Are you employing them
00:06:48.000 as laborers for the mission.
00:06:51.220 It's also a very unclear mission
00:06:53.400 for the father has for the family,
00:06:55.600 thinking long-term for their kids
00:06:58.720 and for the legacy and for the next generation,
00:07:01.920 thinking as a king is what he should be doing
00:07:05.340 instead of thinking as a dad in modern society.
00:07:08.620 Hey, I have my job.
00:07:10.040 I take my briefcase too, and I have my lunch,
00:07:12.520 and then I come home, and then I'm done.
00:07:14.400 And there's two different dynamics there going on.
00:07:17.160 Right.
00:07:17.980 Instead, so I was trying to brainstorm some ideas.
00:07:22.260 Imagine, even if you just have this W-2 job, right, which is common.
00:07:26.100 And so the dad goes off to labor and he goes and buys lunch or et cetera.
00:07:31.340 And what can that six-year-old do for dad?
00:07:35.940 Well, imagine the glory of that six-year-old gets up and makes dad's lunch and he gives it.
00:07:42.200 And so when dad eats lunch, he goes, this is what my six-year-old made for me today.
00:07:47.240 and then at the end when he comes home what's that six-year-old gonna do they're gonna jump up and
00:07:52.320 down say hey daddy what how did you enjoy the lunch i made for you the the joy that they're
00:07:58.260 gonna have helping him even in that two w-2 job so but they're thinking as a family instead of
00:08:04.940 thinking you know in two worlds here the family world and the work world we should have them be
00:08:11.080 merging together on that. So my wife works for me. She's an employee, okay? And that's because 1.00
00:08:18.400 she helps my mission to grow my business. Who am I going to trust more to make sure that work
00:08:26.400 gets done well and quality other than my own wife, other than my own family? That should be 0.81
00:08:32.800 the one working the hardest and most glorious is my own family for my mission. But so I have
00:08:41.060 been able to bring her under the fold and have her do that. So it's thinking of a family economy,
00:08:48.220 thinking of a long-term vision. Okay, what do we want this family and income for the family
00:08:55.100 and where the family lives five years from now and 50 years from now and a hundred years from now? 0.90
00:09:04.320 So I was having lunch just Sunday with some friends, the De Reuters, and we're having lunch
00:09:10.800 talking about, hey, they want to have their family together. Imagine the financial savings 0.98
00:09:17.360 of buying land, and so they can combine their finances and have houses on the land together.
00:09:27.480 Right? So when you look at finances together at multi-generational families, you can be more
00:09:33.380 efficient. The difficulty of the 18-year-old launching or the 22-year-old right out of
00:09:39.500 college launching and they don't have the money for a down payment and so they go and rent and
00:09:44.020 the first thing to do is well you have to have first month's rent and last month's rent and a
00:09:48.020 security deposit and this is thousands of dollars it's difficult for a young family to support that
00:09:55.620 rather if they were able to stay with loved ones for the beginning and save up money or if if even
00:10:03.460 have a down payment or have land to build on spoke to a member of your church that's building
00:10:09.000 a house because of an inheritance they were given, and they're able to use that to buy a house. What
00:10:15.460 a glorious thing that they're able to do is do that. So it's unfortunately a lack of long-term
00:10:22.780 foresight and desire to have long-term glory for the sake of current comfort. We live in America's
00:10:29.000 culture. The American dream is comfort, unfortunately, and the Bible doesn't talk 0.92
00:10:34.900 about, hey, you should work hard so you have comfort, right? And physical comfort. Physical
00:10:39.300 comfort is not a sin, but it's not the ultimate goal. That's where I see our problem is that we
00:10:46.120 have had that culture filter into our Christianity and that we focus our finances on what's comfortable
00:10:53.040 rather than what honors God. What does God say that we should be doing with our finances?
00:10:58.380 Let me ask you a question. Does the person who's managing your money actually share your values?
00:11:03.240 For most Christians, the answer is probably no. 0.78
00:11:07.140 Your retirement account is likely sitting with firms like Vanguard or BlackRock, companies
00:11:12.600 that don't share your worldview and certainly are not helping you build wealth with a distinctly
00:11:18.920 Christian vision for your family.
00:11:21.260 That's why I want to tell you about my friend Joe Garracy and the team at Backwards Planning
00:11:27.120 Financial.
00:11:28.400 Joe is one of us.
00:11:29.520 he understands that financial planning is not just about chasing returns. It's about stewarding what
00:11:36.720 God has entrusted to you. Whether it's investments, estate planning, tax strategy, insurance,
00:11:43.420 debt structure, or protecting your business and your family, they help Christians make wise
00:11:49.340 financial decisions that actually align with their convictions. You don't have to figure it all out
00:11:55.560 on your own. And you don't have to keep swimming upstream with advisors who don't share your
00:12:01.220 beliefs. So go to backwardsplanningfinancial.com, backwardsplanningfinancial.com, and you can
00:12:09.000 request a conversation with Joe and his team today. Again, that's backwardsplanningfinancial.com.
00:12:18.080 Right. That's super helpful. What does God say we should be doing with our finances? Also,
00:12:22.760 So at a foundational level, what does God say about who people are?
00:12:28.560 So as Christians, we think, all right, we need to have good theology, right?
00:12:32.040 That's the study of God himself.
00:12:33.740 Who is God, right?
00:12:35.200 What is his character?
00:12:36.100 What is his nature?
00:12:38.020 But then there's also anthropology.
00:12:39.980 And as Christians, we don't just look at the Bible and the word of God when it comes to
00:12:44.800 our theology, answering the question, who is God, but then move over to pop psychology
00:12:49.440 and the world humanism when it comes to understanding man we we go to the christian
00:12:54.440 source for both so we're going to look at the scripture in determining our theology who is god
00:12:59.280 we're going to look at the scripture likewise when it comes to determining our anthropology who is
00:13:03.780 man and that anthropology is almost equally as important to understanding god because it's it's
00:13:12.460 really understanding both and i mean this is part and parcel of even the core of our christian faith
00:13:18.460 namely the gospel of jesus christ you cannot appreciate the gospel by merely understanding
00:13:23.400 who god is you must also understand who man is because if you understand god even rightly
00:13:29.300 accurately that god is justice god is love god is thrice holy you know all these things that are
00:13:35.400 true about god but you get your anthropology wrong your understanding of man so if you think
00:13:40.020 god is thrice holy but man is pretty holy god is righteous man is kind of righteous god is just
00:13:45.220 and man is, you know, somewhat just, then you're going to say, okay, the chasm between God and man
00:13:49.840 is only yay big, and the cross of Jesus Christ, the bridges said chasm, is only so large. And so
00:13:57.480 you have actually a truncated, narrowed, minimized gospel, because it is the gospel, right, the work
00:14:05.120 of Jesus on the cross, the grace of God, that grace will be as large in your mind. Now, objectively,
00:14:12.200 the grace of god remains the same no matter what um but subjectively our perception our understanding
00:14:20.100 of god's grace is enlarged subjectively through our perspective based off of how accurately we
00:14:27.640 understand who god is coupled consequently with how accurately we understand who man is now a guy
00:14:35.140 like Caleb Hammer because he's not a Christian. He is a product of the world, the wokeity-woke 0.59
00:14:43.440 progressive world. Because of that, take aside his theology, which I have no doubt is atrocious,
00:14:49.420 he probably doesn't have really any thoughts about who God is whatsoever. And if he does,
00:14:53.880 it's probably some new agey, you know, cliche agnosticism. But I guarantee he has a view of man.
00:15:02.520 he has a view so maybe not a view of who god is but who people are what are people and i'm willing
00:15:11.320 to bet i i call it a disney anthropology i'm willing to bet that he has being a woke progressive
00:15:18.200 secular person he has a disney anthropology right a woke progressive secular company
00:15:24.680 disney disney anthropology i sum it up like this right there's the outward man man temporally
00:15:31.580 externally on the outside, and then man in the more eternal essence, internal. Who is man truly
00:15:42.000 on the inside, and who is man temporally, effectively on the outside, right? The Christian 1.00
00:15:48.740 doctrine teaches us that man externally is good. Now, this is what I mean by good. I don't mean
00:15:59.160 morally i mean that the doctrine of the imago dei that mankind is made in the image of god whether
00:16:06.900 he's a believer or an unbeliever whether he's christian or not all people are made in the image
00:16:11.580 of god and that coupled with the doctrine of common grace says that an atheist who internally
00:16:18.580 is totally depraved and and morally speaking on the inside is not only indifferent or neutral but
00:16:26.620 as romans chapter 8 says the mind of the sinful man is at war enmity hostile towards god's law
00:16:33.480 he cannot submit or does not submit to god's law nor can he he is unwilling and unable he must be
00:16:40.680 born again he must become a new creature in christ jesus a work of the holy spirit have a new heart
00:16:45.380 the heart of of stone replaced with a heart of flesh so internally biblical anthropology the
00:16:51.820 christian anthropology on the inside man is immoral he is hostile towards god on the outside
00:16:58.260 even unregenerate the non-christian man because he's made in the image of god and because of
00:17:04.940 common grace a man who is unregenerate and immoral internally can still be wildly productive
00:17:12.980 and even productive in good ways externally so you can have an atheist who hates god on the inside
00:17:20.900 making suspension bridges or curing cancer or a whole host of different things externally
00:17:27.980 so the christian anthropology and this is vital to understand for this episode the christian
00:17:32.760 anthropology is um even non-christian people are lowercase c creators god is the only capital c
00:17:42.020 creator who creates ex nihilo meaning out of nothing so god he speaks the word and by his
00:17:50.700 word that which was not comes into being right god says let there be light and there is light
00:17:58.520 so god is the only one who creates ex nihilo out of nothing capital c creator because he created us
00:18:05.400 and out of all creation we're the only ones that he created in his image we are lowercase c creators
00:18:12.440 now we don't create ex nihilo out of nothing but what god has enabled us to do is to create
00:18:19.380 and produce effectively and beautifully and wonderfully with the resources that he's baked
00:18:26.400 into the fabric of creation so us as lowercase c creators made in the image of god who is the
00:18:32.500 capital c creator we're able to take the resources in god's creation and produce and multiply whether
00:18:40.720 we're whether we love god or hate him even the person who hates god is able to multiply resources
00:18:47.800 So we as Christians with a Christian anthropology, a biblical anthropology, we believe on the outside, man is a creator and producer.
00:18:57.880 On the inside, man is totally depraved, immoral, and hostile towards God.
00:19:03.700 Disney anthropology, which is probably Caleb Hammer's anthropology, is the exact opposite.
00:19:09.640 Disney anthropology says on the inside, deep down, in your heart of hearts, you're a snowflake.
00:19:14.940 you're unique you're lovely you're pure you're beautiful and you just you just gotta let it go
00:19:22.880 let it go you know and and if i just let go of the restraints of society and tradition and my
00:19:29.920 parents then this beautiful butterfly will emerge from the cocoon and internally i'm gorgeous and
00:19:37.460 wonderful uh that's what disney says and then disney also with this worldly anthropology
00:19:43.000 view of man which caleb hammer has says inside you're beautiful outside what are people outside
00:19:51.520 they're not creators they're consumers they're not producers they're not uh assets they're
00:19:59.380 liabilities right this is why oh a global population it's too much uh people should 0.89
00:20:05.280 stop having kids dot dot dot fine print mainly just white people yeah should stop having kids 0.98
00:20:09.980 funny how that works right africans continue to be on usaid and we'll give them billions of dollars 0.99
00:20:15.980 so that they can each have 10 kids but you white guy you should probably stop having kids because
00:20:20.940 of the sun monster you know and environment etc etc etc guarantee you caleb hammer has this view
00:20:27.740 of man his anthropology all everyone's anthropology is twofold outside inside outside inside
00:20:33.460 biblical anthropology our anthropology outside because we're made in the image of god whether
00:20:38.480 you're a christian or not lowercase c creator producer multiplying resources yes right uh and
00:20:46.200 then inside apart from a work of the holy spirit totally depraved not just neutral and or indifferent 0.58
00:20:52.180 but at enmity hostile towards god the disney anthropology of caleb hammer exact opposite so 0.98
00:20:58.540 he looks at all these couples and most of them aren't even married it's two lesbian chicks you
00:21:03.720 or it's two gay guys or whatever or boyfriend and girlfriend who are cohabitating they come in
00:21:10.300 and he thinks of the question of children and he sees children merely as a financial liability
00:21:19.200 extra mouths to feed extra responsibility um downside no zero upside that's how he views it
00:21:30.120 which i don't blame him he's not a christian and this is how the world views children because it's
00:21:36.020 not just related to children it's how the world views humanity do you like to chew gum well
00:21:42.600 congratulations you're still the five-year-old in kindergarten who's putting glue in his mouth

00:23:08.180 or a big human, whether you're five years old or 50, the world truly believes that human beings
00:23:14.600 are a net negative on the planet that they are a liability a parasite a leech a drain that is how
00:23:25.260 our world sees people and and so it it doesn't surprise me that he has the kind of counsel
00:23:33.100 that he has but this is absolutely incorrect the last thing i'd be remiss if i didn't say it i know
00:23:38.720 it's not exactly financial um but i'm laying the groundwork but this is a moral and political
00:23:44.960 implication of what i'm saying is the last one i'll use abortion so many people we have murdered
00:23:52.640 70 million babies in their mother's womb at least this doesn't even include the pill and all all
00:23:58.380 these other but 70 million just that we have counted in the last 50 years since roe roe v wade
00:24:06.020 and that's just in america i if we go global i mean it's it's probably billions but just in our
00:24:12.340 country just in the last half century 70 million children and although caleb hammer who i i can
00:24:20.320 just about guarantee is pro choice right not not saying that if he was here he'd say yes abort every
00:24:26.240 baby but i guarantee he would defend uh the right to choose well it's your choice to abort that baby
00:24:32.680 And I wouldn't be surprised. I haven't watched all of his episodes, but I wouldn't be surprised if there's at least one case where that's come up, where, you know, so-and-so is thinking about having children. He's either advising them not to, or so-and-so is even pregnant. And he's saying, well, you might want to think about whether or not you're going to continue that pregnancy, right?
00:24:54.340 um here's the deal with abortion it's like a caleb hammer uh disney anthropology our world
00:25:01.300 would say 70 million babies murdered well i'm not necessarily going to celebrate it
00:25:06.980 maybe i won't jump in down you know being ecstatic kind of i i kind of am but i just
00:25:11.880 i'm not going to show it i'm going to exercise some restraint but overall hey 70 million less
00:25:18.280 mouths to feed 7 million less this less that you know 70 70 million less people you know
00:25:24.160 taxing the ozone layer, you know, contributing to the sun monster and blah, blah, blah. Like
00:25:29.400 they kind of, if they're honest, they view it as a net positive. Whereas I look at that and I think
00:25:36.480 70 million people created in the image of God, who's to say whether or not one of these babies,
00:25:43.920 these 70 million in the last 50 years, would have been the person who grew up and cured cancer,
00:25:49.160 would have been the person who grew up and found um insane solutions for the entire global
00:25:56.400 environment right it would have solved this that like think of just elon musk first trillionaire
00:26:02.160 1.4 or so at the time of this recording trillion dollars uh i'm closer to being a billionaire than
00:26:09.220 elon musk yep and that's like it's like hey that's a good no what i'm what i'm saying is that he is
00:26:15.640 he has 400 billion more than being a billionaire and i'm still within one billion of being a
00:26:22.260 billionaire give or take so uh but my point is that's just one person is that an extraordinary
00:26:28.340 person yes a unique person but um i don't know maybe that one person maybe he's one out of i
00:26:34.700 don't know let's say 70 million what if in those 70 million babies murdered in their mother's womb
00:26:40.260 there would have been just one more elon musk who would have solved this problem this problem this 0.55
00:26:44.680 problem been able to lift entire nations up out of poverty so if you think of people as mouths
00:26:50.640 to feed rather than hands to serve and to create to make to produce then um you're just you're not
00:26:58.260 a christian you're not so a christian says whether the person is a believer or not because they're
00:27:04.140 made in the image of god because of common grace on the outside externally speaking people produce
00:27:10.660 and internally people need to get saved right disney anthropology on the outside uh people
00:27:18.180 are mean and systems and society hold you down and they're abusive and toxic and they are a drain on
00:27:26.480 gdp and they're a drain on resources and they're bad for the environment and blah blah blah blah 0.86
00:27:32.940 but on the inside snowflakes and beautiful and precious and and great um it's literally the
00:27:38.280 opposite of what the bible teaches and so for you and i taking what you said right here at the outset
00:27:44.800 of the episode um if we're christians and we claim to believe the bible then each and that doesn't
00:27:51.900 mean that there's no family planning that doesn't mean i'm knocking my wife up every second that i
00:27:56.920 possibly can hey you know you're nursing that two-month-old time to wean them right so that
00:28:01.600 you'll start to ovulate again so that we can have another child and have irish twins like i'm not
00:28:06.220 saying we're going for that. And if you have Irish twins, God bless you. That's great. The Lord
00:28:10.380 decides. But you can have some ethical forms of family planning and spacing children out in
00:28:18.140 reasonable ways. So I'm not saying you can't consider what's my income, what can we afford,
00:28:24.080 all those things. But on the whole, the big picture is as Christians, we believe that children
00:28:30.660 are assets we believe that children are a blessing children are a heritage from the lord
00:28:37.000 and blessed is the man whose quiver is full we believe psalm 127 we believe the word of god
00:28:43.900 and not just as some um some trite spiritual platitude yeah no we we literally believe it
00:28:51.000 i believe the word of god that when it says that children are a blessing i i don't think that
00:28:56.860 children are just an eternal blessing or a blessing in the 17th dimension a spiritual blessing i
00:29:02.940 believe that in every single regard including the practical the tangible the earthly and the
00:29:08.740 financial sense that children are a blessing and like any blessing any blessing in life whether it
00:29:16.020 be starting a business that company becomes a blessing is it a a net blessing immediately day
00:29:23.220 one yeah no no right so it's like my company's losing money for the first three years right
00:29:29.240 well uh come back check back in on me in 20 right this company is an immense blessing right and so
00:29:36.560 too with children children are initially in investment but the thing about investment
00:29:41.200 notice i said investment not liability the thing about investments is investments eventually pay
00:29:47.820 off right and the fact that some people's children are not ever paying off is is simply because they
00:29:55.020 have a boomer mentality which is a very novel very modern western idea that when the children
00:30:01.140 grow up exactly like you said and we're done you're on your own you're 18 kicking you out of
00:30:06.780 the house if you want to go to college you need to rack up debt i'm not giving you a dime you know 0.85
00:30:11.360 and we see the tiktok videos of boomers you know or gen xers you know celebrating uh dancing in 0.58
00:30:17.200 the kitchen you know because their son just turned 18 and now he's he's off of the payroll and it's
00:30:22.200 it's not only tragic and sad it's it's it's sin it's actually wicked it's a wicked attitude but
00:30:28.960 the reality is if i'm willing to say no you're always my child you you will always be my son
00:30:34.160 always be my daughter i am with you everything i have is yours like the father says to the
00:30:39.220 prodigal son right uh to his to his not to the prodigal son but the older brother son everything
00:30:43.900 I had was always yours. You have been living under this mentality that you've been a servant
00:30:49.240 in my household, in my estate. You have never been a servant. You have always been a son.
00:30:55.260 Everything I've ever had has always been yours. All you had to do is come and ask, and I would
00:31:01.660 help you along the way. I'm with you. I'm for you. You are attached to me. We're in this together.
00:31:07.860 Yes.
00:31:08.080 If I win, you win. If you win, I win, and vice versa. If you have that kind of mentality,
00:31:13.900 So children are negative financially if you have this boomer mentality, this modern novel idea that I'm going to pay to feed them and to house them and to clothe them for 18 years, and then they're going to be completely severed and completely autonomous, and therefore I don't have any more responsibility. 0.75
00:31:34.040 right you're trying to save yourself cash in a wicked selfish way but also um by doing so uh 0.75
00:31:40.840 yeah you're right that when he's 35 uh no wonder he doesn't come back around and say hey dad can
00:31:46.300 i help right or hey you know what instead of shipping you guys off to the glue factory now
00:31:51.640 that you're 70 years old uh why don't you come live with me and my wife and my family right but
00:31:56.100 why is he not inviting you back in now that he is well established and has resources because you
00:32:01.580 kicked him out and he's treating you the same way you treated him right but if if you viewed
00:32:07.020 children as as as always belonging to that family and viewing the family as a collective in a unit
00:32:15.080 where every one person wins everybody wins right and you treated them that way in young adulthood
00:32:20.920 and in their 20s and continue to partner with them it doesn't always mean handouts of cash but
00:32:25.760 counsel and advice and all and doing things together then children would not actually be
00:32:31.600 strictly a liability but actually an investment first 18 years of your their lives yeah you're
00:32:37.660 you're spending more money on them than you're getting yep but later in life you could hit the
00:32:42.780 jackpot you could absolutely it's like my goodness uh we only had five kids and i wish we had seven
00:32:49.800 because uh we'd be even richer look at the way that they're creating the way they're producing
00:32:54.600 the way they've brought us along into their endeavors we've all benefited together as an
00:32:59.720 extended family um that is the christian view and caleb hammer i'm afraid although he has some
00:33:06.040 decent practical advice for spending for debt for investing for these kinds of things he has decent
00:33:11.860 practical advice he does not have a biblical anthropology and so children never make their
00:33:17.680 into the equation and if they come up at all in the counsel he gives it's essentially um only
00:33:24.920 viewed through the lens of children being an added cost exactly no um i agree 100 yeah i knew you
00:33:33.560 would so what are some practical ways that people can in today's economy which is tough yes it is
00:33:40.180 tough to have a single income household because here's the thing about children um it's not just
00:33:44.900 that we have more mouths to feed but in terms of working outside of the home at least initially
00:33:49.460 when the children are young yes we have more mouths to feed and we have one pair of less hands
00:33:55.340 to work right because you're going from right you're newly married you're typically more often
00:34:00.880 than not uh newly married and you haven't had kids yet you're going from two people working right
00:34:06.740 and two mouths to feed and then you have kids and you go to one person working yeah so half the
00:34:13.540 labor and more people that need stuff, right? And so what is some of your practical advice
00:34:22.700 to young Christians who are saying, I want to be financially wise, I want to build generational
00:34:31.720 wealth, but one of the implications of generational wealth is there's actually going to be a next
00:34:37.740 generation for me to pass it down to. What do you say to them?
00:34:40.900 so there's not one universal for everyone because everyone's starting from a different place so
00:34:47.040 let's talk about different starting places and what are the different things that they can do
00:34:50.380 at different places so what unfortunately a lot of people are missing is that help from the previous
00:34:56.660 generation our parents to help going and so therefore we're starting from scratch okay i
00:35:02.440 started with massive student loans myself and so how do you do this um how did i do this i did this 0.99
00:35:10.880 by living at stupid poverty level 1.00
00:35:14.600 and working a stupid amount. 1.00
00:35:17.120 That's what I did to accomplish this, okay? 0.98
00:35:20.380 My story's not ready for everybody.
00:35:22.940 That's not where I'm trying to go.
00:35:25.200 I'm thinking of a family that I know up in Minnesota
00:35:28.240 where the husband is a pastor and the wife stays at home.
00:35:32.680 I think they have six kids.
00:35:35.040 This is the Stombergs, they have a podcast.
00:35:37.020 but they do massive bulk food where they're buying bulk foods or raising bulk foods and
00:35:46.600 canning bulk foods and they're teaching their kids to actually do all the work to grow this
00:35:52.840 and save it for long term. The tiny little income that they have for the six kids is amazing that
00:36:00.760 they're able to accomplish what they do. So there is a uncomfortable way to accomplish goals in life
00:36:10.260 and most breakthroughs are accomplished through pain. Nobody likes pain. No one likes it.
00:36:18.680 But the necessity of invention comes typically through pain. So from, hey, we need food or,
00:36:28.520 hey we're gonna do work to accomplish this or hey we need the kids to go and create labor in a job
00:36:38.000 to raise money or we're gonna take on a second job there's no one size fits everyone because we
00:36:43.520 have different rural or urban situations that we're living in there's not just one thing that
00:36:50.420 a family can do unfortunately um if there's at any way possible that they have another generation
00:36:56.240 that can help them out um that is it sometimes what i have seen is that the they need to actually
00:37:03.620 ask their boomer parents and or gen x parents or uncles and aunts they are sitting there waiting
00:37:13.200 to help but they're waiting for the ask which which to me is kind of bizarre like shouldn't
00:37:18.580 the older member saying, hey, look, this is how we can help. Let us move close to you so we can
00:37:26.120 watch those kids so you can be freed up for more labor. That's actually the biblical model is
00:37:31.840 helping physically the next generation. This is why having kids young is important,
00:37:38.680 is so that the grandparents have energy. They still have vitality. Yes, right. 70-year-old
00:37:44.080 grandparents can't help four-year-olds yeah can't handle it right so so if you have kids young
00:37:50.580 right when first born having children you will be able to be grandparents to them and but you
00:37:57.300 have to be thinking long term and that's not the situation we have right now in our culture we've
00:38:03.360 had massive gaps in ages before kids we're having that a lot people are waiting to getting married
00:38:10.640 till their late 20s and then having a couple kids.
00:38:14.300 So we have this perpetual large age gap.
00:38:17.700 That's a problem.
00:38:18.580 Well, we need to have that different 1.00
00:38:19.840 in our Christian culture, 0.95
00:38:21.940 but we need help to accomplish that.
00:38:24.680 What we need are wealthy folks in our church
00:38:27.240 helping that, surrogate parents.
00:38:30.320 We have a lot of first-generational parents
00:38:32.100 or a lot of young folks
00:38:34.760 that have their parents unwilling to help.
00:38:38.240 The wealthy folks,
00:38:40.000 and there are wealthy folks in Christian churches.
00:38:43.380 They need to be willing to be surrogate parents
00:38:46.220 financially to these young folks.
00:38:48.300 You can provide jobs.
00:38:49.800 This is what we talked about earlier,
00:38:51.540 the glory of providing jobs for them that pay well,
00:38:55.000 that give them an opportunity to make unlimited money.
00:38:58.460 You want more money?
00:38:59.360 If you work more, you will make a direct increase
00:39:02.320 in proportion to your income based on your work.
00:39:04.360 What a glorious opportunity to give a father,
00:39:06.980 say, look, yep, you're starting off hard
00:39:09.140 and i'll give you a direct increase just work hard go get it yeah that's good um so um we can
00:39:15.240 provide that business owners can provide that opportunity um we can provide money in loans
00:39:21.920 right you talked about on sunday we it is absolutely reasonable and honorable to be
00:39:28.300 providing loans right could we those that have money offer loans internally at our own detriment
00:39:36.320 Yes, we could offer that.
00:39:38.680 If God has provided us funds,
00:39:40.500 why not take the risk and provide loans
00:39:43.760 at a detrimental interest rate?
00:39:46.260 It's not something you have to do
00:39:47.700 and you want to do it and et cetera,
00:39:49.540 but it's something we can help these young generations.
00:39:53.340 Yeah, we're not just talking about strangers,
00:39:54.760 but for family, it's like, okay, we're doing really well.
00:39:59.060 We actually don't have to make a return on this,
00:40:01.580 but this money would be life-changing.
00:40:05.400 yes right for for my son and daughter-in-law um at this stage of their life at 30 years old
00:40:12.820 um and so maybe we can't afford to give it but uh but maybe we can afford to loan it without
00:40:18.800 interest right you know right or loan it at a low interest yes um or even at the normal interest
00:40:26.520 but they they wouldn't get approved but we but we can do it like in all those ways um you are
00:40:33.140 providing an advantage yes um to your your children that's going to directly benefit your
00:40:39.700 own grandchildren why wouldn't that be right to consideration uh here's here's one question that
00:40:45.260 i think is really important maybe we could even just spend the rest of our time on this we're
00:40:49.000 getting near the end of the episode but it's important how can parents christian parents help
00:40:53.860 adult children launch successfully uh but also without creating dependency right i think that's
00:41:01.460 what a lot of people struggle with now i i think that you know people give in to their own
00:41:05.500 selfishness and their own stinginess and and they'll they'll cope right they'll use well i
00:41:12.580 don't um like it meaning it's it's not honest they're not being honest it's like i don't want
00:41:17.540 to create codependency or whatever you know with my adult child so i'm not going to give them
00:41:22.540 anything you know or my dad didn't give me anything and i had to learn the hard way and so
00:41:26.740 he's going to learn too like i mean you have billionaires you know uh heads of companies
00:41:32.220 who are like yeah we uh our children are not in the will or we're going to give each of them you
00:41:36.740 know 150 bucks and the rest is going to go to charity because because we want to teach them a
00:41:41.220 lesson right so um i i think that that that mentality that a lot of boomers actually have
00:41:47.860 sadly uh well i just uh the inheritance that i'm leaving for my adult children is uh is the school
00:41:54.220 of hard knocks right learning learning the hard way getting their teeth kicked in you know
00:41:59.520 financially um i think that that's wrong yes but to be fair on the flip side um i i think that you
00:42:07.640 know there is some kind of mitigating principle like there is a way of just having the trust fund
00:42:12.820 baby who never gets a job who never learns responsibility so so obviously there's got to
00:42:18.740 be some kind of happy medium sure how can um how can those seasoned saints the older generation
00:42:25.720 help their adult children to ensure that they get ahead but also ensure that their that their
00:42:34.380 financial aid that their help isn't um taken advantage of so that it actually puts them
00:42:40.480 behind because it instills bad lessons of entitlement and so on and so forth so there's
00:42:46.960 a principle in finance at both the family level, at the national level, there's a principle that
00:42:53.960 absolutely applies here. And that is reward what you want to continue and tax what you don't.
00:43:02.100 So if you see the young man, the young man and wife with children, this young single,
00:43:09.680 you see them working hard okay you see them doing the uh god honoring labor that's the person that
00:43:20.180 you can infuse money to and and you can give them a little and see what they do and if they treat it
00:43:27.120 honorably and then you support more and then you can support more like you can this doesn't have
00:43:32.120 to be here's five hundred thousand or nothing right you can start with well you know what i'll
00:43:38.960 make the next three car payments for you right and what do they do with the difference watch them
00:43:44.400 oh you went out to a movie and vacations and took an extra trip yep you you're gonna not get more
00:43:51.660 because you're not being honorable with the gift you know are they willing to hear that okay the
00:43:57.640 young the young man and woman need to be willing to say hey you weren't being wise here i want to
00:44:02.640 help you but i'm but i'm hesitant because you're not being wise with your own money right and then
00:44:08.300 hopefully they learn from this and you give them more as some help and some more and it can be an
00:44:14.640 increasing because some people who are young most people are young can't handle large amounts of
00:44:21.200 money right they can't handle the load the heaviness of that amount of fruit to be wise
00:44:26.220 so you trickle it over to them you can help them with the down payment on the house or maybe it's
00:44:32.200 5,000 of the down payment on the house and see what they do. But that should not start when
00:44:38.740 they're adults. It could be because you're just learning this now. You should start this when
00:44:42.840 they're young little kids, right? But some people are not little kids now. And we have folks that
00:44:48.500 are 65 and 70. How do I help the younger generation now? How do I make a difference?
00:44:54.240 Well, you can have an education. Okay. Son, daughter, grandson, et cetera. We would like to
00:45:00.960 pass on money but this is what we would prefer to use it for for long-term growth and this is how
00:45:08.180 we suggest you do it right and see if they do that now what what's most likely is going to say
00:45:15.640 hey let's pay off your four percent house which is not the greatest use of money see the other
00:45:19.840 podcast that we just did um but if that's what the grandparents want to do it'll still be a help
00:45:25.020 it'll be a slower help for the multi-generations but take it and have gratitude for that you know
00:45:31.240 show gratitude for the small amounts and if it's a loan work hard and repay that loan they'll
00:45:37.320 likely start sending gifts if you have a loan and you repay it yeah so the older generation can start
00:45:45.720 small and grow should be willing to do so right away and offer that help hey i see you fighting
00:45:52.980 you know can I be helpful or are you open to some help and where would be the best place to deploy
00:46:00.620 it and help them strategize help that young couple hey you know where do you want to be 30 years from
00:46:07.340 now do you want to have two kids or do you want to have seven and do you need a young father do you
00:46:14.660 need some tooling to re-change your trajectory because you got into a low trajectory industry
00:46:21.320 maybe we can help you finance that trajectory change right like so if you're thinking of
00:46:28.260 your family long term in the gloriness that you can provide if you're doing wise with your own
00:46:34.640 money there's all kinds of tax strategies that can be helped how about educating them on taxes
00:46:40.620 okay most generations i find the biggest hole biggest one of the biggest hole is being efficient
00:46:49.700 and not paying taxes they don't need to this is called legal tax avoidance i'm not talking about
00:46:55.600 tax fraud there's a drastic difference but tax avoidance is legal and we're actually called to
00:47:02.000 do it we're called to be shrewd that means not giving money to this evil government that's
00:47:07.140 supporting things that are against our beliefs let's limit the amount based on the rules they've
00:47:13.000 given us to reduce. Let's pass on that generational knowledge. Let's have conferences
00:47:20.960 on do that. Let's learn about these things, about how to tithe or how to flow income into the family
00:47:29.280 if you're a business owner. One of the businesses I recently took over from another financial advisor
00:47:34.140 was the husband and wife were both employees. They had 20 employees in total. Husband and wife
00:47:39.900 were being paid the same and i was like that's inefficient they wanted to have a retirement plan
00:47:46.260 for have both to contribute they were making roughly 200 000 each and and i said well you're 0.87
00:47:51.140 already an s corp correct yes take three quarters of the wife's income put it underneath the husband
00:47:59.220 have it as k1 and then you don't pay self-employment tax on that which you are paying 0.99
00:48:05.100 self-employment tax now on that money still going to go to the family by just flowing it different
00:48:11.140 you'll reduce the taxes so understanding how money flows that can be passed on from one generation to
00:48:17.640 the next how about how about the grandparents bringing on and taking time and hiring the kids
00:48:24.260 if you have a business owner hire the grandkids that's a wonderful thing you can do because one
00:48:30.120 you can give some relief because those young kids have energy and parents need relief right you can
00:48:35.080 take time off of the parents and give them relief and you can hire them and you can teach them the
00:48:40.440 principles because grandparents should be involved in the lives of those grandchildren. It's a
00:48:45.760 glorious blessing. Grandkids love being with grandparents, right? It's somebody different.
00:48:51.120 It's not mom and dad. It's different that provide love for them, but that love doesn't just need to
00:48:56.260 be emotional. They can teach them how to work. They can teach them how to run money. They can
00:49:02.900 teach them about taxes they can teach them about growth what are those skills that you want passed
00:49:08.480 on right and then support that with money right right it's not just money to buy candy and toys
00:49:14.720 we don't need more candy and toys right what we need is more growth mindsets at all generation
00:49:20.920 and working together as a family unit that's what real love is if you're looking at love for the
00:49:26.480 next generations well what do you want them to know about life that you have now okay so that's
00:49:35.920 that's the love of thinking generationally with your money and thinking generationally with your
00:49:41.880 skills and generationally with your time we're not just here for comfort and and enjoyment of
00:49:49.460 god's creation which is an honoring thing to god but we also are called to think in how to grow
00:49:54.860 long term right that's what i want love uh people to be able to do um also and then thinking of the
00:50:01.440 gentleman and i just brain farted his name earlier that you're mentioning with the podcast
00:50:05.500 um that the financial podcast oh yeah caleb hammer thank you um he's bringing on folks about
00:50:13.540 finances but he's doing the finances in a twist of a god-honoring way if i may talk a little bit
00:50:19.920 about this craziness that my life had recently.
00:50:23.760 And that is actually switching
00:50:27.200 from one financial company to a next
00:50:29.760 so that we could honor God with our company
00:50:33.260 and honor God with our finances,
00:50:34.980 which we were restricted in doing.
00:50:37.080 We had a values disalignment that happened.
00:50:39.620 When I started originally in this industry,
00:50:42.140 we were actually at a company that prayed in Jesus' name
00:50:45.960 at every single level,
00:50:47.040 at the large company level of tens of thousands of people
00:50:50.920 and at the small level of 20 people.
00:50:54.100 They had, and this is why I joined them
00:50:56.400 besides being an excellent firm.
00:50:58.540 But now in the month of June,
00:51:01.000 the entire corporate headquarters is lined up in rainbows
00:51:04.300 and they are proud of the fact
00:51:07.640 that they are one of the most respected
00:51:09.520 and open companies to hire the LGBT crowd.
00:51:17.040 Hmm. Totally different switch. And so we moved, this was as a few months ago, we moved and now
00:51:24.360 we have a suite of tools for those of our clients that want it, that actually will invest money
00:51:31.480 based on God's principles. We are desiring purposeful to eliminate the porn and the LGBT 1.00
00:51:38.720 and those unbiblical, horrible things out of someone's portfolio. So we don't make money on 1.00
00:51:44.520 those right and then we're voting this is one i think things people miss a lot we're voting the
00:51:50.500 shares based on god's principles what vanguard and blackrock are doing in state street is they're
00:51:57.940 actually voting by proxy when you buy their etfs and their mutual funds you're giving your right
00:52:04.140 to vote to them you're they're voting by proxy in the communists we are taking over that power
00:52:11.660 and say, no, we're going to vote based on God's principles.
00:52:15.680 And then we're doing corporate outreach.
00:52:18.040 We're using that power to go to market and not just be passive by voting,
00:52:23.140 but reaching out to these companies. 0.92
00:52:24.760 Like recently, Walmart was going to bring transvestite surgeries
00:52:29.520 as a medical benefit to their employees' kids. 0.97
00:52:32.760 And we said, hey, we don't like that.
00:52:35.200 And because we have enough power, they took that away.
00:52:38.160 Wow.
00:52:38.760 we we're able to have costco pull abortion drugs off of their shelves so we are reaching out to
00:52:46.920 take dominion for christ on every aspect of finance in the world and we're doing that because
00:52:52.520 we have a lot of clients and we're using their combined finances to go to market with power
00:52:57.880 if you go to market by your own self you're not gonna have enough power right so that's the whole
00:53:03.240 sleeve of tools we are bringing to our clients look do you want to take dominion you want to
00:53:08.740 take dominion in wall street and in main street well we will help you use your money powerfully
00:53:14.540 in this way this is one of the major reasons why we change so now we can continue supporting
00:53:19.840 organizations like nxr like new christian press like we desire to use profit to support christian
00:53:28.060 organizations promote themselves and grow and have their own power in their industries that's
00:53:32.660 incredible um so right here at the end um i want to highly recommend and commend you as someone
00:53:41.360 that our listeners should consider working with thank you um i know that you're very busy and
00:53:46.080 have very many clients but um i know at the same time that you want to help uh the type of person
00:53:52.540 who listens to nxr yeah young men who are ambitious who are trying to get ahead and you specialize
00:53:59.620 not only in investment strategy and building wealth,
00:54:03.040 but also, like you mentioned briefly a moment ago,
00:54:05.640 legal tax avoidance, right?
00:54:08.320 Not tax fraud, but legal tax avoidance
00:54:10.460 to help guys who are losing thousands
00:54:13.180 or even tens of thousands of dollars
00:54:15.020 on a wicked government that hates you
00:54:16.920 and is promoting all the things
00:54:19.420 that we would stand against.
00:54:21.280 And lo and behold, the tax book is 14,000 pages long,
00:54:25.380 but you know some of the tricks of the trade
00:54:27.100 to legally get them their own hard-earned money
00:54:31.160 where they can keep it
00:54:32.420 and not be supporting this behemoth
00:54:34.660 that's doing all this destruction.
00:54:37.020 So what do people do?
00:54:38.740 Where do they go if they want to use you
00:54:41.080 as a financial advisor?
00:54:42.620 Sure.

00:57:07.620 Christians. So we should be outstanding and excellent in our profession. And that's one of
00:57:13.500 my passions. And that's why I'm always learning. I'm bugging other people. Hey, if you know more
00:57:18.720 than me in a subject, then I'm going to bug you and learn what you know, because I want to

00:57:28.320 Yes. Awesome. Joe, thank you. Thank you. Everything we do here at NXR Studios is simply
00:57:33.820 one part of a three-pronged approach to winning America for Christ. On the ground, we have our
00:57:40.340 local church, where I preach the Bible and administer word and sacrament. Here at NXR
00:57:46.100 Studios, we focus on politics and culture. But we have a third organization that I am the president
00:57:52.940 of, Right Response Ministries, that sits between the church and NXR Studios. Right Response Ministries
00:58:00.260 puts out weekly written and audio content
00:58:03.440 focused on theology, discipleship, and the church at large.
