00:00:00.000 Hello and welcome to another episode of RealPolitik.
00:00:03.000 I am your host, Firas Maudad, and today we're going to be talking about Russia-Ukraine for
00:00:08.080 a little bit and the Middle East.
00:00:10.520 Unfortunately, for those of you who believe that it should be nuked, it hasn't happened
00:00:16.920 yet, and I'm not sure there are enough nukes, but that's a different conversation for another
00:00:21.680 time.
00:00:22.880 Now, starting off with Russia-Ukraine and what's happening there.
00:00:26.240 yesterday or two days ago yeah yesterday Trump announced that there was a energy ceasefire in
00:00:34.540 effect between in the war between Russia and Ukraine and both parties have supposedly agreed
00:00:40.900 to it don't break it says Donald Trump this came as a bit of a shock to everybody involved
00:00:47.500 um really it was surprising uh but it came also with trump saying that there are going to be
00:00:57.480 uh massive diesel purchases by the united states from russia when i say massive i think i might
00:01:05.220 be exaggerating what is being supplied by the russians according to trump from uh two days
00:01:10.620 before, is about 12 days worth of United States consumption of diesel that is going to come from
00:01:19.940 Russia. This is important because what it shows is that the level of damage to energy infrastructure
00:01:27.940 as a result of the Russia and Ukraine war and as a result of the Middle East war has put enough
00:01:35.340 pressure on the U.S. administration for it to start thinking about ways of shifting the dynamics of
00:01:43.480 these conflicts. It is having a geopolitical effect by the look of it. Now, mind you, neither
00:01:50.620 side seems to really care about Trump's announcement, at least initially. For one thing,
00:01:58.020 the Russians, pretty much right after the announcement, delivered a massive strike
00:02:03.400 against Ukrainian energy infrastructure, particularly power infrastructure, that knocked
00:02:09.120 out power in Kiev. They basically went ahead with their policy of continuing to destroy
00:02:17.660 infrastructure in Ukraine. And the Ukrainians weren't idle either. They hit an oil terminal 1.00
00:02:26.380 in Rostov, Rostov-on-Don, close to the Ukrainian border. They hit a Russian facility there.
00:02:35.420 Neither side is really adhering to this thing, but Trump is trying to force it down to their
00:02:41.560 throats anyway. And I thought I'd explain what the Russians are thinking in this here,
00:02:48.360 because that would be helpful. The only reason that Russia would accept this is to try to drive 0.75
00:02:57.600 a deeper wedge between the Americans and the Ukrainians and try to highlight that it's Zelensky
00:03:05.580 who is the bad guy for refusing American requests. Because what the Russians have been doing 0.99
00:03:10.820 is that they've been severely damaging the energy infrastructure and the power infrastructure all 0.71
00:03:15.920 over Ukraine in the hope of isolating the Ukrainian forces on the wrong side of the Dnieper
00:03:24.880 River, which I think I have a map up here somewhere, don't I? On the other side of the Dnieper
00:03:32.560 River, that's Yemen, with the idea being that they will force the Ukrainians to spend a winter 0.60
00:03:42.000 with no power, with no supplies, because Russia hasn't just been hitting all of the energy
00:03:49.100 infrastructure around Kiev and trying to create a blackout in Kiev. It's also been destroying
00:03:54.940 the fuel pumping stations all over the country. It's been hitting power transmitters, especially
00:04:02.400 in the east. And the idea is that Russia will try to force the Ukrainian army to end up
00:04:11.420 unsupplied, no power, no food, no diesel, no fuel for the duration of the coming winter.
00:04:21.500 And that's why you're seeing the Russians attacking the bridges in Kiev. That's why you
00:04:27.940 are seeing the Russians hitting all of the energy infrastructure in Kiev with the objective of
00:04:37.220 putting the Ukrainian army in the east of the country where it's actually concentrated
00:04:43.420 in the same position that the French forces under Napoleon and the German forces under the Nazis
00:04:51.140 ended up in Russia, which is far away from logistics, far away from resupply,
00:04:58.060 facing a more numerous Russian enemy, and therefore giving the Russians the ability to
00:05:04.040 slowly isolate and crush the Ukrainian military, which means that the strikes that the Russians
00:05:10.840 are conducting are much more important than any particular developments on the battlefield,
00:05:18.120 because if they succeed, the Ukrainian counter-offensives that are happening now
00:05:23.620 won't really make any difference. It would make sense for the Russians to just withdraw in the
00:05:29.740 face of any Ukrainian offensive if they had to, and just bide their time until the attacks on 0.74
00:05:38.520 civilian life, on warehouses, on infrastructure, on power, water, everything really, succeed in 0.63
00:05:50.060 isolating the Ukrainian military and keeping it in a position where it can't be supplied.
00:05:56.740 That's the change in Russian tactics. So the Russians are actually pretty close to achieving this
00:06:02.980 and signing onto a ceasefire imposed by the Americans that protects their own energy
00:06:09.540 resources ends up working for them. That's why Zelensky is so angry about this. That's why you
00:06:17.620 see headlines from The Guardian saying that Zelensky is furious as Trump announces a deal
00:06:23.220 to buy Russian diesel. What's Trump doing here? He's saying that the priority is
00:06:34.180 his elections and the midterms, and that he will throw Ukraine and Europe under the bus
00:06:43.060 just to boost his electoral chances in November. And he will do so for a pretty small quantity of
00:06:50.500 diesel, just 12 days of supply, that are intended to bring the price down temporarily. 0.95
00:06:57.060 And if you're Zelensky, well, this really looks like a stab in the back. 0.99
00:07:00.820 This really looks like a betrayal. And so you see The Guardian presenting this as
00:07:06.180 Zelensky reacting furiously and saying that it's absolutely terrible that the Americans want to
00:07:11.140 buy diesel from Russia. It's not fair and it's not honest, because now the Ukrainians can actually 1.00
00:07:16.100 correctly claim that the United States is financing the Russian war machine.
00:07:21.900 The Russian war machine is mainly financed through the sale of natural resources, which
00:07:26.380 is Russia's biggest export to the world.
00:07:30.280 These exports are then spent on the import of a lot of Chinese material that is used
00:07:37.420 in Russian military industries.
00:07:40.480 materiel then become drones, missiles, weapons that are used in Ukraine. So Zelensky is pretty
00:07:48.860 upset. And not only that, Trump has been calling for replacing Zelensky so that he can make a deal
00:07:55.860 with Russia. And he's gone back to the earlier position that he had taken on the Russia-Ukraine
00:08:00.880 war, which is that Zelensky needs to change his mind or to go so that there can be a peace with
00:08:07.960 the Russians. It's too soon to say that this is Trump completely changing policies. It's much
00:08:15.020 more likely that the pressure from energy markets is so intense that Trump is being a little bit
00:08:21.720 more accommodating to the Russians, so he can get some diesel deliveries, so he can enhance his
00:08:27.740 position against the Europeans. But this is probably going to backfire. Because for one thing, 0.70
00:08:33.560 the Canadians aren't going to be happy about this. They're actually quite comfortable with
00:08:37.340 the strikes on energy infrastructure
00:08:41.260 in the rest of the world
00:08:42.100 because it boosts the Canadian economy
00:08:43.640 and the Canadian economy is suffering massively
00:08:45.720 from Trump's tariffs and his pressure.
00:08:47.800 So that's a win for them. 0.99
00:08:50.220 And it's really for the Europeans 1.00
00:08:52.100 a massive humiliation.
00:08:54.780 I mean, when Trump a few years ago
00:08:56.860 was saying that,
00:08:59.660 okay, the Germans are going to pay a huge price 0.99
00:09:06.140 for them depending on Russia too much, and really they should behave like Poland and start buying 0.53
00:09:12.620 American energy. Well, it turns out that that was a threat, because it was the Americans who made 0.96
00:09:21.600 the Europeans a few days ago release more diesel onto the market from their stockpiles, risking
00:09:29.940 having a much worse time in the future by releasing these stockpiles. And it was the
00:09:35.360 American Zoo blew up Nord Stream in order to basically sabotage European
00:09:41.480 industry and make Europe more dependent on the United States for its energy
00:09:47.240 imports than it was on Russia and buying these shipments of US LNG at a much
00:09:56.480 higher cost than Europe would have obtained them if they came by pipeline
00:10:00.200 from russia so just to put this in perspective again this is a total humiliation for the
00:10:07.880 europeans and this is a betrayal for the ukrainians and this is coming after the united
00:10:15.840 states had stopped uh giving weapons to ukraine for free and instead making the europeans buy
00:10:23.520 these weapons to be given to Ukraine.
00:10:26.980 And when you put it all together, 0.50
00:10:29.260 this is just the Americans 0.75
00:10:30.700 constantly crushing and humiliating Europe. 0.67
00:10:34.500 That's what's going on here. 0.98
00:10:38.360 And if you're Russia, 1.00
00:10:39.580 this is a net win 1.00
00:10:40.760 because now you've put the Europeans 0.99
00:10:44.120 in conflict with the Americans
00:10:45.880 and the Ukrainians. 0.97
00:10:48.120 You've strengthened the argument
00:10:50.100 from the AFD in Germany and Marine Le Pen in France 1.00
00:10:56.180 that this war against Russia is idiotic. 0.99
00:11:01.700 What needs to happen is for Europe to abandon Ukraine 1.00
00:11:05.320 so that it can get supplied with cheap Russian energy. 0.60
00:11:09.640 And you've made it clear that this is exactly what the Americans are doing.
00:11:14.240 Why are we stuck paying for this conflict when the Americans went out?
00:11:20.820 So this is actually pretty significant, not because it's guaranteed to work.
00:11:26.160 The Ukrainians and the current European leadership will do everything that they can to make sure that it doesn't work.
00:11:33.400 And the Russians will do the same.
00:11:35.200 The Russians will continue with their campaign to dismantle Ukrainian infrastructure, including power and energy infrastructure, 0.74
00:11:42.420 so that they can trap the Ukrainian military in the east
00:11:46.560 without any power, fuel, or supplies.
00:11:51.420 That's the idea. 0.87
00:11:52.260 This is why they're going around bombing all locomotives in Ukraine.
00:11:56.080 This is why they're destroying Odessa 1.00
00:11:57.900 to make sure that the Ukrainians can't trade, 1.00
00:12:00.480 can't import anything, can't export anything. 0.98
00:12:03.060 This is why there's an ongoing campaign
00:12:04.880 against the bridges across the Dnieper in Ukraine,
00:12:07.700 the biggest river that divides Ukraine into east and west.
00:12:10.940 this one this is why the russians are engaged in a campaign against the bridges over this river
00:12:16.540 the aim is to isolate this entire half of ukraine which is where the industry is concentrated
00:12:24.820 which is where the military the um the um the mining assets are concentrated which is where 0.85
00:12:31.020 the natural resources are concentrated the idea is to isolate this trap the ukrainian military
00:12:37.180 on this side of the river and slowly dismantle it.
00:12:42.640 And now, with this shift that Trump has undertaken, 0.72
00:12:47.540 he's signaling to the Europeans that this is what he's going to allow the Russians to do.
00:12:53.900 Add to it the fact that this is coming at a time 0.51
00:12:56.500 when the capacity of Europe to continue supporting the war is heavily degraded,
00:13:04.100 and it's coming at a time where the suspicion between Europe and the United States has never
00:13:09.160 been higher. Now, in the past, I've argued on my own website on Mondagio Politics that the
00:13:16.060 objective of the United States is to impose a regime change in Europe and to basically destabilize
00:13:22.080 Europe to force it more firmly into the American orbit. I made that argument before Trump took
00:13:29.960 power in January 2025. But basically, if you're the United States, what you want to do with Europe
00:13:38.340 is make it completely submissive to the United States so that the United States can confront
00:13:46.740 China and Russia and whoever else it wants to fight more effectively, but mainly China. 0.51
00:13:53.740 And if the U.S. is going to confront China, what it needs to do is consolidate over Europe to an
00:13:59.440 extent that Europe will participate in any future trade war against China. Now, Trump tried the
00:14:07.740 tariff war against China. It completely backfired because the Chinese were able to restrict the
00:14:12.640 exports of rare earth minerals and other products that pretty much crippled Western industry. 0.68
00:14:18.740 So what we're seeing now is a continuation of this policy by the Americans of breaking Europe
00:14:29.140 to incorporate it into the american empire more easily and the hope is that parties like afd and
00:14:39.120 uh le pen's rassemblement national and these others will actually be more compliant with
00:14:45.300 the united states than the existing crop of european leaders that's the bit that's slightly
00:14:52.740 delusional because given what the americans have done to europe which is destabilize the
00:15:02.440 mediterranean with the interventions in libya iraq and syria destabilize european industry
00:15:09.940 by pushing for this war to russia under victoria newland and by pushing for this escalation
00:15:17.200 and destroying European industry by blowing up Nord Stream,
00:15:21.760 there is no goodwill left between Europe and the United States.
00:15:28.360 So this is a terrible position for the Americans to be in
00:15:33.700 when the Europeans actually wake up to what's been done to them.
00:15:40.100 Until then, this is a pathway for the Americans to continue consolidating over Europe
00:15:45.960 and making Europe dependent on American energy exports, not Russian energy exports,
00:15:53.060 and therefore making sure that Europe is compliant with any future escalation
00:15:59.960 that the United States might want to undertake against China.
00:16:04.480 This is briefly what's happening here.
00:16:10.540 Let's see how it plays out, but I don't expect it to actually play out in the Americans' favor.
00:16:15.180 because you can only keep doing this to people for so long
00:16:18.700 before eventually they awaken to the reality
00:16:22.220 that actually the United States is just a imperial power
00:16:26.320 trying to subjugate you,
00:16:28.600 which is what's actually happening.
