00:18:57.280 He actually describes the mindset of the peoples of European elites

00:19:01.020 who were creating the Balkan states in the late 19th, early 20th century

00:19:05.520 and why they were willing to tolerate all the atrocities

00:19:08.980 that were committed in these redistricting.

00:19:10.280 And he says,

00:19:11.060 The populations of Eastern Europe were still locked into complex multiple loyalties

00:19:14.220 of kinship, territory, and religion, tribes with collective claims.

00:19:17.740 To make them conform to the nationalist imperative,

00:19:20.300 the recreation of new states that abolished those lines,

00:19:23.620 was bound to take more than a few battles and some diplomacy.

00:19:25.920 it was bound to take a very great deal of very forceful cultural engineering in many cases it

00:19:55.940 conclusion to which this series of steps leads us cannot be avoided with luck understanding and

00:20:01.440 determination the price can be mitigated but its payment cannot be altogether avoided just to be

00:20:06.860 clear as well france fanon in wretched of the earth makes a very similar point not actually

00:20:11.060 quite as eloquently though though he is quite a good writer um he he objects between the um

00:20:16.880 subnational ethnic tribal groups and says, well, these people have all of their various rivalries

00:20:22.600 and contradictions, and this is something that will have to be ironed out to create the nation

00:20:27.620 and the national state. And one of the issues is the national bourgeoisie acting as the

00:20:36.780 facilitator between the newly emerging nation and the imperial apparatus that actually widely

00:20:43.760 controls the global network uh it essentially plugs the nation into that rather than allowing

00:20:49.180 this national culture to merge and meld so in effect uh the national bourgeoisie are kind of

00:20:54.900 um traitorous class in his view and he he was trying to avoid it um so this is very interesting

00:21:02.300 very interesting i think he's correct on this it's what we've got now something i'm sort of
