00:00:00.200Hi everybody, I settled in to work on suicidal empathy and I was working on a section on fat studies and fat acceptance
00:00:13.040because it's empathetic to tell people who weigh as much as whales that it's healthy for them to be at any size.
00:00:21.680It's better to lie to them than to hurt their feelings about being fat.
00:00:25.460And so as I was doing my research, I came across this very, very exciting special issue and I'm going to read it for you verbatim and prepare for it to be in suicidal empathy.
00:01:01.720Hei kanohi kitea kahoki nega mahara is a well-known Maori wakatoki proverb.
00:01:11.780It encapsulates one of the integral principles of teao Maori, the Maori world,
00:01:17.580and kopapa Maori, Maori philosophy, ways of being, knowing, seeing.
00:01:24.420It reiterates the importance of being seen, being present, and being remembered.
00:01:28.880It highlights the value of wakka, wano, gatanga, good relationships, and of the ways we indigenous peoples relate to each other through presence.
00:01:39.880When considering this way of conceptualizing the significance of re-visibilization,
00:01:47.220we seek to rethink and reshape our indigenous knowledge.
00:01:53.580A familiar body, a seen body, causes memories to flow, memories to stir.
00:02:09.440Here we reconceptualize the notion of presence, relationality, and re-visibilization of our bodies.
00:02:20.680We seek to explore the spaces of indigenous fat studies, posing the question,
00:02:26.920what does indigenous fat studies look like?
00:02:30.200Fatness is intersectionally experienced, and for those of us who occupy multiple identities that are minoritized,
00:02:39.960our experiences of navigating fatness are complex.
00:02:43.500We invite papers for a special issue of fat studies in Interdisciplinary Journal of Body, Weight, and Society
00:02:49.780on indigenously fat and fatly indigenous.
00:02:54.860This special issue will encompass a variety of topics around the conceptualization, actualization,
00:03:04.540and embodiment of indigenous fat studies and fat indigeneity,
00:03:09.940and what this may look like to us as indigenous people.
00:03:14.440So they go on to explain what the submission instructions are.
