Summary

A man with a pro-Palestine stance approached me and my daughter wearing a Star of David and said, "Free Palestine" and then ran into a store. He didn't threaten us directly, but he was sufficiently emboldened that he felt it necessary to signal his viewpoints. People have to read the signals.

00:00:00.240 Hi everybody, this is Gad Saad.
00:00:04.380 I've been fortunate enough, knock on wood, to have almost all beautiful and positive interactions with people on the street.
00:00:13.320 Only once in the past have I had a threatening interaction.
00:00:17.400 Well, earlier today, I was walking in a historically very, very heavy Jewish area.
00:00:24.440 I was walking with one of our children and my wife.
00:00:27.500 And we're walking on the street, obviously a family thing.
00:00:31.100 A guy approaches us, looks at me, then looks at my daughter who is wearing two conspicuous Star of David.
00:00:42.460 And as he passes by us to enter a store, he goes, free Palestine. 0.98
00:00:47.240 And you could see sort of the facial cues that he is exhibiting.
00:00:54.940 And then he quickly runs into the place.
00:00:57.500 He didn't threaten us directly, but the point that I want to make is, I see every day thousands and thousands of people who are, for example, Muslim.
00:01:12.220 They're wearing the hijab, they're wearing this, they're wearing that. 0.96
00:01:15.840 And I've often critiqued many tenets of Islam. 0.92
00:01:20.780 Yet I've never had the reflex to approach someone and hound them individually.
00:01:28.600 Right?
00:01:28.820 They're individuals.
00:01:29.780 They might be fully supportive of all of the values that I support.
00:01:34.520 They might actually be an ally.
00:01:36.100 Who knows?
00:01:36.500 but this person is sufficiently emboldened in montreal in 2025 when you're saying free palestine
00:01:45.400 what are you saying free of what free of beavers free of uh lemurs free of a particular invasive
00:01:54.220 plant or is it free palestine of jews you know where i have tons of family so that could be
00:02:02.860 a threatening message yes if we're charitable we're going to say no no he's just talking about
00:02:07.520 geopolitics but of course that's not what is typically intended by the way he didn't look
00:02:12.380 muslim he looked like a canadian i could have imagined that he could have been jewish but that
00:02:18.180 guy felt sufficiently emboldened felt sufficiently hateful that he didn't say this guy is walking
00:02:24.960 with his family just walking by smiling having a good day it was necessary for him to
00:02:32.040 signal uh his viewpoints and again it always happens like this first you keep quiet when
00:02:41.640 there isn't there aren't enough of you that share those views then you become a bit more emboldened
00:02:45.720 then more emboldened then you either have to flee if you're jewish or you submit or you're killed
00:02:54.500 people have to read the signals 10 years ago i wouldn't have had that happen 20 years ago this
00:03:01.860 not this wouldn't have happened and no it's not all related to october 7th and now remember that
00:03:07.440 october 7th happened because since 2005 nothing had happened in that region nothing nothing no
00:03:14.220 complete peace and then some people decided to go in and butcher 1200 people we can debate whether
00:03:20.380 the retaliation has been excessive not excessive enough whether they're in the right whether they're
00:03:25.520 in the wrong but decent people would say this guy is walking with his family with his young
00:03:30.520 child this is not a time for me to accost him in this manner but that gentleman decided to take care
