00:19:07.420 So in this time of uncertainty and need, Canada will be there for our auto workers.

00:20:10.140 build an all in canada manufacturing network to build more car parts domestically limiting how
00:20:16.360 often they cross the border during production how are you going to do that have you already sat down

00:23:38.100 Mark Carney's greatest skill appears to be his remarkable ability

00:23:46.220 His most recent exit was January 15th from GFONS.
00:23:50.600 Remember that name, GFONS, an organization he founded and co-chaired
00:23:55.180 which is now being investigated by the U.S. House Judiciary Committee
00:23:59.040 for allegedly violating antitrust laws by pressuring companies to adopt net zero goals.
00:24:09.040 Whatever political motivations may be behind the probe,
00:24:12.360 it indicates a major decline in popularity for the kind of climate-focused agenda Carney had been pushing.
00:24:18.680 Apparently he's lost half of the investment that he garnered back in 2018 when he formed this thing.
00:24:25.860 And what did Carney do the day after his resignation from G Fonz?
00:24:30.380 He officially threw his hat into the liberal leadership race, hoping to become party leader and prime minister of Canada.
00:24:35.460 the glasgow financial alliance for net zero g fonts was launched by carney who was then
00:24:42.800 u.n special envoy on climate action and finance in april of 2021 the organization was set up as
00:24:49.000 a u.n-backed global coalition of financial and banking institutions in order to accelerate
00:24:54.340 the transition to net zero by 2050 in line with the paris agreement g fonts operated like an
00:25:00.960 umbrella uniting various sector-specific alliances. Net Zero Asset Managers, which was launched in
00:25:07.440 December 2020 and predates GFONS, for example, is under the umbrella. My mistake. I said 2018. It's
00:25:12.880 2021. GFONS's most recent troubles appear to have started June 11, 2024, when the Republican-dominated
00:25:21.640 Judiciary Committee in Washington released a report called Climate Control, exposing the
00:25:27.160 decarbonization, collusion in environmental, social, and governance, ESG investing.
00:25:34.300 The report alleged that GFONS is part of a climate cartel which colludes to decarbonize
00:25:41.560 companies by leveraging negotiations with management, shareholder resolutions, and board
00:25:46.260 of director votes.
00:25:48.200 Carney has said as much in interviews in the past year, maybe two years, where he says
00:25:53.120 anybody who doesn't get on board is going to be climate roadkill.
00:25:57.160 I'm paraphrasing that, by the way.
00:25:59.600 According to the committee, this cartel forces companies to disclose their carbon emissions,
00:26:04.360 reduce their carbon emissions, and enforce their disclosure and reduction commitments
00:26:10.220 by handcuffing and restricting company management.
00:26:12.940 The committee's stated concern was that collusion on decarbonization
00:26:16.440 necessarily causes reduced output at higher prices,
00:26:20.740 including in the critical fossil fuel, aviation, and agriculture industries,
00:26:25.080 posing a significant threat to the economy and to the well-being of American consumers.
00:26:30.140 Then, on December 20th of last year, the pressure on GFOTS increased, albeit indirectly.
00:26:37.300 The same committee sent letters demanding information, communications, and documents
00:26:42.500 to over 60 U.S.-based asset managers in regards to their involvement with GFOTS.
00:26:47.920 Documents related to what the committee calls GFOTS's collusive activity
00:26:53.020 are to be used to inform potential legislative reforms.
00:26:57.020 On December 31st, GFOTS suddenly decided it would restructure.
00:27:02.340 According to environmental advocacy group Global Canopy,
00:27:06.280 GFOTS was originally an umbrella group for various financial institution net-zero alliances
00:27:11.400 that has now shifted to a less ambitious group formed by specific financial institution executives.
00:27:18.200 GFOTS's focus suddenly changed as well,
00:27:20.360 shifting to directing capital towards investments in energy transition,
00:27:24.880 when only recently its focus was the more aggressive goal of phasing out financing
00:27:29.600 for activities that do not align with the Paris Agreement.
00:27:37.800 They think they could hide what they've been doing?
00:27:42.140 In addition, GFOTS appears to have suddenly had a change of heart
00:27:45.520 about requiring members to align with the Paris Agreement targets.
00:27:49.460 Both versions of this mission statement sound bureaucratic and benign.

00:28:38.520 wells fargo and morgan stanley these are some of the biggest banks in the united states
00:28:43.640 maybe the world. Were these precipitous exits likely a result of growing skepticism towards
00:28:49.760 these banks' ESG agenda? ESG Dive, a trade publication that covers news about environmental
00:28:56.360 and social governance, appears to think so. It noted this shift followed pressure from U.S.
00:29:01.720 Republican-led entities skeptical of ESG initiatives. Certainly interesting timing,
00:29:08.180 considering that Trump was just, just about ready to come into power as well.
00:29:12.400 It appears with G-Fonts, Carney found himself in an uncomfortable situation
00:29:18.160 or at least a position that was being quickly drained of prestige.
