00:36:51.060 in which he lays out his criterion for differentiating science and pseudoscience, namely falsification.

00:36:58.900 Well, he starts with the very simple but very profound observation

00:37:03.060 that people are attracted to pseudoscientific theories by their apparent explanatory power.

00:37:10.180 These theories appear to be able to explain practically everything that happened within the fields to which they referred.

00:37:15.080 The study of any of them seemed to have the effect of an intellectual conversion or revelation.

00:37:20.380 Open your eyes to a new truth hidden from those not yet initiated.

00:38:29.040 For example, by introducing ad hoc some auxiliary assumption,

00:38:33.180 or by reinterpreting the theory ad hoc in such a way that it escapes refutation.

00:38:38.580 Such a procedure is always possible,

00:38:40.860 but it rescues the theory from refutation only at the price of destroying

00:38:44.480 or at least lowering its scientific status.

00:38:48.080 And he sums it up by saying,

00:38:50.720 the criterion of the scientific status of a theory is its falsifiability

00:38:55.520 or refutability or testability.

00:38:58.880 So I would say that the ball is in the court of the believers

00:39:01.920 of the catastrophic anthropogenic climate change hypothesis.

00:39:06.380 By what means can one falsify this hypothesis?
