00:11:22.140 yeah so um on on saturday there was it's hard for me to judge exactly but um there was a protest

00:11:29.660 earlier on um this year um and it was a pretty big one and uh talking to ottawa police after

00:11:34.380 they estimated that one around 10 000 this one had significantly more people than that

00:11:39.040 um so i i would say definitely over 10 000 it's hard to really say but um i mean in that shot on

00:11:45.520 wellington street just for for perspective that street is like three lanes wide with bicycle lanes

00:11:50.440 and 20 foot sidewalks on either side and it was packed and it was blocks back like past the hill

00:11:57.100 all the way down to elgin like as far as the eye can see like that what about the smoke bombs that

00:12:02.720 were going off and the music that was playing i mean how did they manage to pull this off without

00:12:06.880 police involvement yeah so um yeah there was a few things so early on in the day um there was

00:12:12.860 groups that came in from toronto and montreal and so a group from montreal pulled up onto wellington

00:12:17.440 street with a great big panel van um just pulled right over on the side of the road and started

00:12:21.120 unloading that scaffolding um like two levels of scaffolding they took out pallets giant things

00:12:27.140 of plywood and they started erecting things basically um on the sidewalk uh bylaw came in

00:12:32.500 and gave them a ticket and police came in trying to negotiate them with them a little bit but they

00:12:37.800 ended up building this basically rolling giant rolling structure with about 10 speakers around

00:12:42.700 it and set it up in the street and i mean there was a fairly significant ottawa police presence

00:12:47.760 i got into town a bit early and as i was coming into downtown i just happened to be going by

00:12:52.100 police headquarters and it was surrounded with uh with vans of public order units paddy wagons

00:12:56.980 all kinds of stuff um but it wasn't nearly enough people to manage a crowd like that

00:13:01.180 so um you know pretty early on and it was obvious that the police were taking a very stood back

00:13:06.660 position um early in the day the chief actually um police chief eric stubs came out and he was

00:13:11.960 actually in person on the scene, but he left before the crowd really gathered. And once it

00:13:16.160 was big, there was, I don't think anything could have done. It doesn't matter if they had every

00:13:19.720 police officer they wanted there. I don't think they could have managed that if they had to engage

00:13:23.340 it. So let me ask you this, being on the ground there as you were, and I know, and this is what

00:13:29.200 I said to you last time you were on the show, you've got a knack for putting yourself in

00:13:32.160 difficult situations, maybe even dangerous situations. Did you feel any concern about

00:13:38.940 possible repercussions just for being there um yeah this one i mean this one wasn't as hairy as

00:13:46.360 some i've been in when i got there's a video where i'm kind of in the middle of this crowd

00:13:49.760 as they're setting off smoke and uh and that was a little bit uh got my heart up a little bit i

00:13:54.720 guess because i didn't really have a good exit strategy if i needed one um but like if i would

00:13:59.380 have been in front of that crowd that was coming down the street anybody that would have been in

00:14:02.680 front of that would have been swallowed up um if they were if they were hostile to do you know

00:14:07.740 there has been time these people have been hostile um i think it's more the antifa element

00:14:11.600 that are the issue um as opposed to the the i don't know the the palestinian they're not

00:14:17.380 necessarily palestinians but you know from the region but um the the antifa crowds then he seems

00:14:48.180 any type of leftist uh leftist type protest are definitely in there there's people with uh

00:14:52.980 communist flags mixed in but um i don't know about paid it's you know every these paid the paid thing

00:15:02.900 really hard to to track down how it gets done but in this case i do know that they were busting

00:15:07.520 people in from from toronto and montreal um that was advertised well ahead of time and i mean i

00:15:12.400 talked to some of the people and i saw them there um the crowds that come in like it doesn't feel

00:15:18.820 organic to me everyone's kind of in lockstep um everybody matches everybody you know they have

00:15:25.520 pre-arranged dance um they are really organized they listen to whoever's in charge right they do

00:15:31.120 what they're told um as far as by their own people anyways um so it doesn't uh it doesn't

00:15:36.220 have the same organic feel like a normal protest what if it just brought in some sort of a mixture

00:15:40.680 of society did you see who was in charge of this thing or were they way too far ahead or

00:15:47.160 insulated by other people in the crowd to get to i mean it's hard to know who's the actual person

00:15:52.960 in charge as far as the people on on the speakers and and pulling the things and if i did see them

00:15:57.200 they were covered though with uh with stars or masks and and all kinds of various other things

00:16:02.160 very few people are completely visible or identifiable even actually you had mentioned

00:16:08.120 to me earlier this afternoon when we talked that the jewish community was put on high alert by the

00:16:13.640 police and they were terrified i'm sure all day yeah yeah so i spoke to uh to someone i know quite

00:16:19.820 well in that community and actually someone that was involved in one of the more recent

00:16:23.700 Israeli pro-Israel type rallies and that's what she said yeah they got warnings like I mean

00:16:29.960 basically not to leave not to go outside and I mean we've heard of different attacks on synagogues

00:16:35.980 and on Jewish schools and there's been targeting like I mean they weren't destroyed but these

00:16:40.820 these marches have been known to go go near Jewish businesses and stop in front of Jewish

00:16:45.660 you know jewish related businesses that they go to the embassy so i mean if there was someone

00:16:50.020 around there with an israeli flag i mean i i would be i would be nervous if i had an israeli flag

00:16:54.640 down in that area for sure was there any talk of maybe a an israeli counter protest or was this

00:17:01.440 just too big to face nothing like that yeah yeah it's big and uh that's not generally how they go

00:17:07.160 sometimes if there's like a the israelis have had vigils and things about the hostages and things

00:17:12.760 and a few people will come to counter-protest that.
