00:06:25.600 uh with brad's story i know a lot of people were saddened by it and we know that's not the only one
00:06:30.460 we know there are plenty of parents matter of fact i know the uh the school division down near
00:06:36.280 steinbeck has had a massive withdrawal of students who are going to be doing homeschooling now and
00:06:41.220 They've had to fire teachers and cut millions of dollars from their budget down there.
00:06:45.920 Are we seeing the same kind of thing in Winnipeg, especially over the past couple of years with the way schools have been changing the rules?
00:06:52.640 It seems like daily because of the COVID response.
00:06:55.460 Have you seen a lot of families get fed up and just say, you know, we're going to homeschool now?
00:07:01.160 Yeah, people homeschool for a wide variety of reasons.
00:07:04.020 And over the last couple of years, the number of homeschooled students in Manitoba has more than tripled.
00:07:11.220 Um, people are still pulling their kids out for, well, you can assume that many reasons
00:07:16.620 some are putting their kids back in, but some have realized that, uh, um, what's actually
00:07:21.820 happening in the schools more, and they're just deciding to keep their kids home permanently
00:07:26.160 now.
00:07:26.940 Can you, you don't have to name names here, but can you share some of the stories that
00:07:30.560 people have shared with you in terms of why they've pulled their kids out of school?
00:07:34.100 well um they range from not wanting their kids to wear masks all day long in schools
00:07:42.160 and then there's the opposite people saying they want everybody wearing masks all the time in
00:07:47.840 schools um there's uh people not wanting their kids vaccinated um that's the uh agendas that
00:07:56.800 are in schools today um critical race theory people are not wanting that talk to their kids
00:08:03.400 And it seems to be everywhere and anywhere.
00:08:08.800 So please tell us about the conference that you have coming up this weekend and the speakers that you're bringing to town and how we can get there and all that.

00:10:35.660 so i guess it's been kind of a growing thing for 31 years at least it has been matches that's the
00:10:41.900 manitoba association of christian homeschools has been around since 1983 to support homeschooled
00:10:49.760 families in the province now let me ask you this um this is got a lot of of a religious aspect to
00:10:58.000 it it's at the church of the rock and i see christ mentioned a few times and i have nothing personal
00:11:02.920 against religion. You know, I mean, I, I'm, Hey man, if you want to go and go to church and have
00:11:07.740 your own beliefs, that's cool. But there may be a lot of people who say, you know what, I don't
00:11:11.500 want this force fed to my kids. And if I do this through matches, you know, maybe I'm going to have
00:11:16.720 to do that. So is that an option? Oh, absolutely. It just so happens that probably 80% of the
00:11:24.580 homeschool families are Christian families. Well, homeschooling has been around for quite a long
00:11:30.720 time and a lot of that is because of the the value systems that our homes that our christian
00:11:37.120 families have are different than the value systems of the culture today and many of those christian
00:11:44.240 values are values that many canadians embrace um things like uh children respecting their parents
00:11:52.320 And, you know, the fact that we have two genders, not 25 genders, I don't know how many they're taught.

00:12:09.240 So, you know, things like respecting parents, caring for other people, healthy relationships, focusing on parenting skills,
00:12:19.480 teaching our kids life skills. So many ways that we raise our children in Christian homes
00:12:27.860 are ways that many people want to raise their children. So we do have a lot in common. There's
00:12:33.660 no force feeding of anything about, but I mean, we are Christians. So we talk about Jesus
00:12:38.580 in our sessions, but you don't like anything a go-to shadow. You take what you think is going
00:12:44.420 work for you and and leave and leave what doesn't work what about socialization there's a lot of
00:12:49.820 questions about that and you were saying uh before we went on tonight uh you know linda and i were
00:12:53.700 having this conversation and you said this is the number one question that people have for you
00:12:58.360 uh socialization if you're homeschooling your child when do they have an opportunity to hang
00:13:04.000 with other people their own age well that's a good question um and often i will answer that by
00:13:13.140 what kind of socialization do you want for your children? Do you want positive socialization or
00:13:18.020 negative socialization? Perhaps public school may not always be positive socialization. They take
00:13:25.260 300 kids and put them in a building, and they never teach them how to get along. They just
00:13:31.180 expect that they're going to get along. When we parent our kids, or when we have our children
00:13:37.420 home full-time parenting is a large part of what we do if you don't have respect and obedience
00:13:45.260 from your child then you can't possibly work with them if you say okay it's time to sit down and do
00:13:50.620 some reading well if they say no i don't want to do that well it's not going to work so so first
00:13:55.900 we have to work on their heart um and um building a good relationship with them as a parent and a
00:14:02.940 child um and then we can um we can move forward we we say something about a karate school out
00:14:11.760 in charleswood where people get together and like a lot of homeschooled kids do yeah there's a
00:14:17.040 multitude of activities now for homeschooled children we don't we don't hibernate shadow
00:14:21.000 we get out and do what everybody else does we have all of the community activities to participate in
00:14:26.740 um before COVID there were a lot more activities so we're getting back into that like today I just
00:14:32.980 went to Safe Retail Park there was a whole pile of homeschool moms that get together
00:14:36.760 every Tuesday from 1 30 to 3 30. Anybody's welcome to join them the kids play um they had
00:14:43.580 organized soccer going on there volleyball all kinds of things for the kids to do but um there
00:14:49.860 is a karate club here in Charleswood that just this past year has offered um karate lessons and
00:14:55.760 a weekday afternoon for strictly for homeschooled kids um there's a gym and a gymnastics club that's
00:15:03.100 offered gymnastics for homeschooled kids um pretty well any sport going you also mentioned
00:15:10.300 linda too that you know school when we think about it in the traditional sense in the public
00:15:15.280 school system starts at eight o'clock in the morning and finishes at three o'clock in the
00:15:19.400 afternoon you have your two breaks you've got your lunch break recess whatever but when you're
00:15:23.620 homeschooling, you don't necessarily stick to any particular schedule. I mean, I'm sure you want
00:15:28.620 your kids to have a schedule, so they have to get up at a certain time, but there are, you know,
00:15:33.780 a lot of differences. It's always ongoing, but it's not, right? I mean, you could take different
00:15:40.420 breaks on different days, depending on what happens. Is there a lot of variation? Absolutely.
00:15:46.000 Yeah, tons. I know at one point in time, my husband worked a job where he was Sunday and
00:15:52.260 Mondays were his days off so we homeschooled from Tuesday to Saturday so that he had his two days
00:15:57.840 off with with his children um I had a friend who again who she let her kids sleep in so 10 or 11
00:16:04.380 every day and then they homeschooled in the afternoon and then when dad was home from work
00:16:08.820 they had the whole evening they had several hours in the evening to just to have their family time
00:16:13.780 together um so what we do in a day with working one-on-one we can get accomplished in way less
00:16:21.420 time than in a classroom or in a group with 25 or 30 students all at once. So like a kindergarten
00:16:31.820 student, as a parent, you could sit down and maybe half an hour do what they need needs to be done.
00:16:38.440 Then they have the rest of the day free. So if you're working full time, you could do that in
00:16:41.720 an evening. Well, that's another question I was going to bring up. I mean, in this day and age,
00:16:46.640 it seems like both parents have to work just to make ends meet, get the mortgage paid, put food
00:16:51.460 on the table. So, you know, how, how do we do this? Does one parent have to quit their job or
00:16:56.420 how does this work? Well, for me, I've been blessed to be able to be home full time and
00:17:01.960 just my husband works, but you're right. There are, our homeschool families come in all shapes
00:17:07.740 and sizes. So we have single parents homeschooling. We have grandparents looking after grandchildren
00:17:12.880 and homeschooling them. We have two parents working and homeschooling their
00:17:18.880 kids. How they do that? Well, some have a home-based business and they involve
00:17:23.880 their children in their business and that's a fantastic way to learn.
00:17:28.880 Others, one parent might work 9 to 5 and another parent might work 4 to 12.
00:17:35.880 So there's always a parent other than an hour or two overlap between them.
00:17:40.880 Some, one works full-time, one works part-time.
00:17:43.960 Some, one parent will work just weekends
00:17:47.220 and another parent Monday to Friday.
00:17:49.520 So any creative way that you can come up with.

00:18:09.580 their math curriculums from K to 12. So there are many creative ways that we as parents can work
00:18:18.880 and still home educate our children. We can involve aunts, uncles, grandparents,
00:18:25.240 utilize your evenings, utilize your weekends. Is there any kind of diploma at the end of it?
00:18:32.660 I mean, this is a long project too. If you're going to homeschool your kids like starting at
00:18:36.120 age four so you're going to simulate kindergarten and all through you know k through eight and nine
00:18:40.840 through 12 is there any kind of diploma at the end of it is there any simulated diploma or is it just
00:18:45.920 all right you learned everything you need to go now off the world you you go yes that's basically
00:18:50.420 it i don't keep that in the next yeah there's no diploma unless you want to make one yourself and
00:18:55.360 give it to your kids um well actually there there are options i mean if you want a diploma you can
00:19:02.680 fine there are um organizations school boards that you can do a distance um program through
00:19:08.700 i didn't do that with any of my children they they went k to 12 without any high school credits
00:19:14.220 and no diploma and yet all three got into university two are now finished university
00:19:19.360 uh and they did very well in university i was about to ask that what about university i know
00:19:24.720 a lot of people are you know kind of not really cool with the idea of university these days if
00:19:30.860 you want to talk about indoctrination camps that would be a place to send your kids um so how do
00:19:36.460 they get into university with no diploma how does that work well um i could probably write a book on
00:19:43.580 that topic give us the cole's notes okay um well uh what my well every university and college
00:19:53.300 they have different requirements for entry for home educated students so that's a little bit
00:19:59.420 definition so if you can narrow down what your child wants to take and where they want to go
00:20:03.420 then you can gear their high school education at home to fit the entry requirements of a particular
00:20:09.720 post-secondary institution. My oldest went to the University of Winnipeg and the University
00:20:18.160 of Winnipeg accepted a parent-generated transcript so I just made up my own transcript. I listed the
00:20:25.200 subjects for each grade. I listed the marks, her average, and sent that in. And they accepted that
00:20:32.420 without any official credits or diploma. Some universities don't. She also took a couple of
00:20:39.520 courses through Athabasca Open University, which at age 16, you just sign up and pay and you can
00:20:46.420 start university. So that's not an option for all students, but she was very academically oriented
00:20:52.660 and had no problem doing university courses at that age.
00:20:56.320 So that also went on, you know, her transcript.
00:21:01.220 So, yeah.
00:21:02.960 How much of a burden is this on the parent, Linda?
00:21:05.480 Because, I mean, it's like you have to relearn everything all over again

00:21:09.860 And when my kid was in school, you know, he'd say,

00:21:14.520 I'd look at it and go, oh, maybe.

00:21:22.660 Well, we don't actually have to relearn everything, Shadow. We can. And what I found one of the hugest blessings with home education is I did learn a lot of things. I learned a lot of Canadian history that I never studied when I went to public school.
00:21:40.640 But no, you don't need to learn everything. We have really good curriculum. Like I mentioned earlier, there's a lot of curriculum that's specifically geared for home education. Step by step, holding your hand, do this, do that. Coming to a conference is a great way to see it, to learn about the curriculum, the ways to teach your kids. You don't need to use structured curriculum for everything that you teach your children. You can use activities, music lessons.

00:22:13.240 for every lesson in every stage um there's websites for help there's um um Khan Academy
00:22:21.880 is a website that has a lot of reference material for all grades and all subjects that you can go up
00:22:28.040 and look at a particular topic how to figure something out and when you homeschool your
00:22:33.560 kids they they learn to learn on their own too lynn oh sorry not lynn
00:22:41.960 i've got a question from lynn actually not a question but she says this is my biggest fear
00:22:45.800 as a single mom i could never have homeschooled my kids even if i wanted to have you seen single
00:22:50.840 parents do this linda yes i have seen single parents homeschool homeschool their kids again
00:22:58.120 they would do some in the evening again you don't need to spend six hours a day homeschooling your
00:23:03.160 your child um um you you have your evenings you have your your weekends there's only four
00:23:12.040 required subjects that would be math reading social and science um and there's no requirement
00:23:20.260 that says you have to spend 20 hours a week on every subject really and truly the most important
00:23:25.440 things for your child to know is math and language arts reading once your child can read and read
00:23:32.620 well they can learn anything and teach themselves at anything um so we want to teach our children
00:23:38.040 how to learn how to love learning how to be independent learners and again it takes a small
00:23:44.320 amount of time working one-on-one with a child to be able to do that and if you have do you do you
00:23:50.760 trick out a room in the house as kind of like a classroom or do they do it in their bedrooms or
00:23:57.040 the dining room well the world is our classroom shadow we don't limit it to any room in the house
00:24:05.440 we went to use sidewalk chalk out on the driveway to do math problems or spelling or printing we go
00:24:11.960 on field trips in the summer we've gone on family camping trips to the mountains and i count that i
00:24:18.140 gave one time my daughter high school credit um because there actually is a high school course
00:24:23.520 where we used to live in Nusja, where you go kayaking and you go hiking and all the kinds
00:24:30.560 of things you do on camping. And they get high school credit for that. So I thought, well,
00:24:34.680 if the school can do that, then I can do that sort of thing. Linda, I have one last question
00:24:39.360 for you. Stigmatization. Is there any problem with the kids? If they get out into the world
00:24:45.760 with kids who are going to public school and they say, oh, I haven't met you before. What's
00:24:51.240 your deal while i'm homeschooled is there anything like like that do kids make fun at all i've never
00:24:58.820 had that my children have never had had that experience um all three of them uh when they
00:25:04.720 were in high school they played soccer on public school soccer teams and they had absolutely no
00:25:10.680 problem um getting along um the other kids were actually fascinated by them and never some never
00:25:17.580 heard of homeschooling i had lots of questions for them so it was it was a wonderful experience
00:25:22.800 they never had any problem going to post-secondary either linda let's go through uh again the days
00:25:30.140 and the speakers uh coming up at the conference this weekend where it is and what information
00:25:34.540 people need to get in there okay okay so this weekend um friday uh morning uh church of the
00:25:43.660 Rock in Winnipeg. It's the 31st annual homeschool conference, and our theme is for such a time as
00:25:50.200 this. So registration begins at 8 o'clock. Sessions begin at 9 and go all day till, I think, ending
00:25:57.680 between 8 and 9 in the evening. Back Saturday the 28th, also at Church of the Rock, 8 o'clock
00:26:04.240 for registration. You can come for one day, you can come for both days, 9 till 4 on Saturday.

00:26:39.180 When people pull their kids out of school to homeschool them, how do they approach their kids with that?

00:27:13.940 So don't take your kids out of school on Friday and sit down Monday with a whole new set of books and expect to take off.

00:27:23.340 So you might take a week or two weeks or could even be a couple of months to just spend time with your kids, play games with them, read to them, go places with them.
