00:27:31.980 and the republican house campaign committee between them have another 600 million dollars

00:27:36.920 that's one billion dollars to educate people about the trump record and to get the vote out so

00:27:44.240 it ain't over till the fat lady sings uh and hakeem jeffries trying on the speaker's robe

00:27:55.320 And anyway, FBI Director Cash Patel told the Senate Judiciary Committee

00:27:59.640 that in 18 months, this bureau stopped 1,100 perpetrators

00:32:36.940 district attorney but he got national fame because he was busting corrupt politicians

00:32:47.620 attorney philadelphia retired arlen made it clear democrat party leaders that he wanted the

00:32:52.980 nomination and they told him no you you can't be the district nominee district attorney nominee

00:32:58.040 that's an irish seat and you're jewish so arlen went over to the republicans and asked for the

00:33:03.980 nomination to become district attorney and they gave it to him and they put him on a ticket with

00:33:09.400 a basketball star from the university of pennsylvania i believe it was tom gola and they

00:33:14.460 hired the great david garth who was a genius one of the earliest political consultants uh

00:33:19.100 who understood the use of mass-based broadcast television

00:33:24.060 to change political thinking, and they were elected.

00:33:28.820 Arlen, then, only after winning did he become a Republican.

00:33:33.400 Then the party bosses came to him.

00:33:35.240 They wanted him to run for mayor of Philadelphia,

00:33:38.880 a job that he didn't want because he loved being a district attorney

00:33:41.900 and he was a great crime fighter.

00:33:44.440 But he ran for mayor because he felt it was his responsibility

00:33:48.100 to the party that had nominated him for DA.

00:33:50.480 He had to go to court because the Democrats argued

00:33:54.340 he had to resign as DA to run for mayor.

00:33:58.300 He was defeated in the race for mayor.

00:34:52.920 We're back in the Stone Zone. I want to continue talking about my friend Arlen Specter, who was the only four-term U.S. senator from Pennsylvania.

00:35:02.140 Specter ran for district attorney, won in an upset, then ran for mayor of Philadelphia, lost.

00:35:08.340 Then, surprisingly, because he was up in the Watergate year, lost his district attorney's office.

00:35:13.560 He then ran for governor, ran a spirited campaign, and he lost.

00:35:18.460 He then ran for the U.S. Senate against John Hines, once again ran a spirited campaign, and lost.

00:35:24.880 And then in 1980, Richard Schweiker, the U.S. Senator, surprised everybody by announcing that he would retire, and our own inspector ran one more time.

00:35:33.140 And he won.

00:35:34.000 And he was one of the most consequential senators in Pennsylvania history, serving four terms, the only man to serve four terms.

00:35:40.720 It's very similar to the story of Abraham Lincoln, a man who ran for the House and the Senate before being defeated in both offices, before being elected president of the United States.

00:35:52.180 So it demonstrates the importance of resilience and persistence in American politics.

00:35:58.520 I could also point out the example of Richard Nixon, who went in a brief six years from being unemployed after he was released from the Navy and unable to find a job as an attorney to two terms in the U.S. Senate, elected in 1946, reelected in 1948, then elected to the U.S. Senate in 1950.

00:36:21.680 and then chosen to be vice president in 1952. That's a six-year rise from being nobody,

00:36:30.060 being a nationally unknown, to being vice president of the United States, and of course,

00:36:35.360 then to being the Republican nominee for president, losing the 1960 election or having it stolen from

00:36:41.340 him, as I've argued in two books I wrote, to then running and getting ignominiously defeated in the

00:36:49.020 1962 campaign for governor of California. And then, thanks to the assassination of

00:36:56.620 John F. Kennedy, the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy, the tragic assassination of Dr. Martin

00:37:04.320 Luther King, and of course, the Vietnam War, I don't mean thanks to, but because of, the siege

00:37:10.260 parted in such a way that allowed Nixon to make the greatest comeback in American political history.

00:37:15.780 The point of this is, recently I was on the street and I ran into a young citizen journalist and he asked me what was the most important, successful quality that I had in a short video I agreed to do.

00:37:29.780 And I told him three things, persistence, resilience, and never quitting.

00:37:35.300 See, a man is not finished when he's defeated, he's only finished when he quits.

00:37:40.200 And like all of these patriots, whether it is Lincoln, whether it's Spector, whether it is Nixon, or whether it was Trump, because the odds of Trump winning in 20, losing a contested election in 2020, winning in 16, losing a contested election in 2020, and making a miraculous comeback in 2024, all of that requires persistence, resilience, and this is the most important part, deep faith in God.

00:38:09.580 deep faith in God. So if you look at the qualities that I think are required to survive in American

00:38:15.740 politics, and I've been through some very tough times, as people know, it is that faith in the

00:38:20.980 Almighty. Today, I'm thanking God because, as I said at the top of the show, the excellent news

00:38:26.820 that my wife is now five years cancer-free. She had very aggressive stage four Hodgkin's non-lymphoma.

00:38:35.600 The doctors gave her little hope, and today she is vigorous and healthy, and I'm extraordinarily

00:38:42.160 blessed. That's why those who think that this upcoming midterm election will be the

00:38:48.060 end of the world and the end of Western civilization, I don't buy that. Donald Trump

00:38:55.440 has two more years as president. Perhaps the Democrats will win the House. That's not a

00:39:00.680 certainty by any means. Perhaps they will try to impeach him in another show impeachment.

00:39:05.020 but they won't get two-thirds of the votes no matter what happens in the Senate and the Trump

00:39:09.460 presidency will continue and the best is indeed yet to come. So thank you for joining us today
