00:00:47.240 I would say 50% of the people that come visit the sports bra aren't sports fans.
00:00:51.720 They come to be in community.
00:00:53.320 They come to be part of this culture.

00:01:45.560 Hey, I'm Jay Shetty.
00:01:51.720 This episode, Lizzo opens up like never before
00:01:55.100 about self-love, transformation,
00:01:57.860 and finding real peace
00:01:59.360 in a world that constantly tries to define you.
00:02:02.660 It's not me anymore.
00:02:03.900 Whoever Lizzo is to the world is not really even me.
00:02:06.400 And that disconnect is depressing.
00:02:10.020 The Grammy goes to Lizzo!
00:02:12.380 Listen to On Purpose with Jay Shetty
00:02:15.520 on the iHeartRadio app,
00:02:17.360 Apple Podcasts,
00:02:18.400 or wherever you get your podcasts.
00:02:29.220 This is Gavin Newsom.
00:02:31.600 So when I started the podcast,
00:02:33.340 I made the point that I wanted to reach out to people I disagree with
00:02:36.540 and do so in a civil way,
00:02:38.280 to have a dialogue.
00:02:39.600 People I agree with.
00:02:40.600 But I also made a commitment to all of you
00:02:42.660 that I wanted to break news.
00:02:44.240 After all, I'm the current governor of California.
00:02:47.180 I make decisions on a daily basis.
00:02:49.140 And I thought it was important on some critical decisions
00:02:52.620 to bring people in to the decision-making process.
00:02:55.660 And of course, a lot of attention has been given as of late,
00:02:58.740 particularly with the Los Angeles County District Attorney's
00:03:01.980 announcement earlier in this week
00:03:03.340 about the Menendez brothers
00:03:05.260 and the Menendez brothers case.
00:03:07.160 There's been a lot of inquiries.
00:03:08.420 A lot of folks like you have reached out and have asked,
00:03:11.860 is that influencing a determination for clemency?
00:03:15.220 Does what the DA just said,
00:03:18.460 does that influence the process that's being conducted
00:03:21.500 by our board of parole hearings?
00:03:23.660 It doesn't.
00:03:24.740 It may influence the court.
00:03:26.340 The court resentencing will continue to go forward.
00:03:29.060 The DA now,
00:03:29.880 the new DA is pulling back,
00:03:32.260 recommending from the Menendez brothers to be resentenced.
00:03:35.800 But it doesn't impact the process that's underway,
00:03:38.900 that review for clemency in my office
00:03:41.460 or the independent risk assessment
00:03:44.080 that will be concluded on June 13th
00:03:47.960 by the board of parole hearings.
00:03:50.400 And I'll repeat that.
00:03:51.340 On June 13th,
00:03:51.880 both Lyle and Eric Menendez independently
00:03:56.740 will have their final hearing,
00:03:59.560 a report that then will be submitted to me
00:04:01.600 on the 13th of June for consideration.
00:04:05.080 We will submit that report to the judge
00:04:07.500 for the resentencing,
00:04:08.720 and that will weigh in to our independent analysis
00:04:12.320 of whether or not to move forward
00:04:14.340 with the clemency application
00:04:15.620 to support a commutation of this case.
00:04:19.640 So this was a very significant announcement
00:04:23.240 from the DA this week,
00:04:25.040 but it doesn't fundamentally change the facts
00:04:28.460 as it relates to the independent investigation
00:04:30.700 in my office,
00:04:32.800 the board of parole hearings,
00:04:34.420 or fundamentally change or alter
00:04:36.860 the process that's underway with the resentencing.
00:04:39.880 It just changes the recommendation
00:04:42.260 from one supporting with the previous DA in LA
00:04:45.600 resentencing and one now
00:04:47.820 with the current DA opposing it.
00:04:50.100 I get a question a lot about celebrity
00:04:53.100 and whether that has an impact on decisions,
00:04:57.700 decisions for the court,
00:04:58.960 decisions that we make as it relates
00:05:00.540 to applications for clemency,
00:05:02.560 this commutation.
00:05:04.100 And it's a great question
00:05:05.480 because I think it cuts both ways.
00:05:07.860 Yes, celebrity weighs.
00:05:10.160 It has an impact,
00:05:11.620 but in what direction does it weigh?
00:05:13.380 Sometimes it's used actually against people
00:05:15.400 because they're so high profile,
00:05:17.400 they're actually held to a higher level
00:05:18.960 of scrutiny and standards.
00:05:20.640 At the same time,
00:05:21.760 you don't want that celebrity
00:05:23.040 also to influence on the other side.
00:05:25.380 So it's a balancing act,
00:05:26.840 but I'm deeply mindful of it.
00:05:29.000 And that's why it's critical
00:05:30.560 that our team independently stress test
00:05:32.900 the nature of celebrity.
00:05:34.400 And that's why I moved forward
00:05:35.380 with the board of parole hearings
00:05:37.220 to independently review
00:05:39.040 with a group of experts,
00:05:40.680 forensic psychologists,
00:05:41.800 and others,
00:05:42.780 the facts of this case,
00:05:44.400 not borne by any bias
00:05:46.740 because of celebrity.
00:05:48.160 So a lot of people have asked me,
00:05:49.740 have you watched
00:05:50.380 any of these Netflix series?
00:05:51.640 Have you seen any of the dramatizations
00:05:53.040 around the Menendez brothers,
00:05:54.700 including more recently,
00:05:55.800 Ryan Murphy's dramatization?
00:05:57.800 The answer is no,
00:05:58.800 I haven't.
00:05:59.300 I've not seen one.
00:06:00.920 I've seen a few clips here and there
00:06:02.820 on social media.
00:06:04.320 And I don't intend to watch these series
00:06:07.620 because I don't want to be influenced by them.
00:06:09.540 I just want to be influenced by the facts.
00:06:11.780 I'm obviously familiar
00:06:13.000 with the Menendez brothers
00:06:14.740 just through the news
00:06:16.400 over the course of many decades,
00:06:18.540 but not to the degree
00:06:20.800 that many others are
00:06:21.920 because of all of these documentaries
00:06:24.060 and all of the attention
00:06:25.660 they've received.
00:06:26.780 So that won't bias
00:06:27.780 my independent
00:06:29.620 and objective review of the facts.
00:06:31.380 And again,
00:06:31.680 it's not just my independent
00:06:32.960 objective review of the facts.
00:06:34.980 It will also be made by my staff,
00:06:36.580 my team,
00:06:37.620 that does this kind of work.
00:06:39.540 on a consistent basis.
00:06:41.820 So on June 13th,
00:06:43.060 we will have
00:06:44.000 the Parole Hearing Board
00:06:45.680 recommendation
00:06:46.380 as it relates to the risk assessment,
00:06:48.200 as it relates to the forensic psychologist.
00:06:50.820 And that recommendation,
00:06:52.560 that assessment,
00:06:53.500 that independent analysis
00:06:54.520 will help guide
00:06:55.840 the decision making
00:06:57.220 that my office
00:06:58.320 is independently reviewing
00:07:00.360 as it relates
00:07:01.020 to the clemency application.
00:07:02.420 In Mississippi,

00:07:14.040 asylum cemetery.
00:07:15.480 It was my family's mystery.
00:07:17.940 Shame,
00:07:18.840 guilt,
00:07:19.700 propriety.
00:07:20.940 Something keeps it all buried deep.
00:07:23.380 Until it's not.
