00:06:24.000 Hey guys, welcome to another huge episode of Triggered.
00:06:27.000 I hope everyone's doing great.
00:06:29.000 Today, we're going to have a fun one.
00:06:30.000 We'll be joined by America First Legal President Gene Hamilton.
00:06:34.000 He's been on the show before, but now, AFL, America First Legal, is representing Nick Shirley, the young citizen journalist who exposed the Minnesota daycare fraud and is now in California.
00:06:49.000 They're representing Nick in his lawsuit against the state of California after California passed a law.
00:06:56.000 Literally passed a law that could punish the people exposing fraud, journalists doing journalism for exposing the fraud instead of the people actually committing the fraud.
00:07:10.000 I know that sounds insane, but bear in mind this is California, so I guess it is.
00:07:16.000 But it is insane.
00:07:18.000 It is insane.
00:07:19.000 But it also tells you exactly how the machine works.
00:07:22.000 And we discuss that so much here on the show.
00:07:24.000 But Nick shows up with a camera.
00:07:26.000 Finds a home health and hospice operation, billing taxpayers' money with no one there.
00:07:32.000 And Sacramento's answer isn't to open the books, to look at it, to say, hey, thanks for pointing it out.
00:07:39.000 That's what we should be finding.
00:07:41.000 It's to go after the reporter.
00:07:44.000 Imagine the situation was reversed in terms of political affiliations. 0.98
00:07:49.000 It'd be outrage.
00:07:50.000 Then there's the other California questions Medicare claims for care that was not provided.
00:07:56.000 You'd think that'd be a big deal.
00:07:58.000 Gavin Newsom's wife's charity.
00:08:00.000 Hundreds of pages of tax returns reporters could view but could not copy.
00:08:06.000 And wildfire aid that somehow wandered away from wildfire victims.
00:08:12.000 I mean, it's the only state with the only governor that literally can't put out a fire on the coast when you are literally on the Pacific Ocean.
00:08:20.000 They couldn't figure it out, guys.
00:08:21.000 It's too complicated.
00:08:22.000 These are incredibly bright people, obviously.
00:08:25.000 And that's only California.
00:08:27.000 Because last night, New York's attorney general put the entire Democrat approach into one.
00:08:34.000 Incredible sentence.
00:08:36.000 While President Trump's team spent yesterday serving subpoenas on nine elite universities over alleged J1 visa fraud, you know, it's just a little different.
00:08:45.000 Things are nuts.
00:08:46.000 So we've got the news first, then Gene joins us.
00:08:50.000 So guys, make sure you're liking, sharing, subscribing so you never miss one of these major episodes.

00:10:02.000 The Democratic Socialists of America won primaries across the country. 1.00
00:10:06.000 Next, they're coming for Congress and they're coming for you. 0.63
00:10:10.000 If they win the midterms, they'll defund the police, they'll reopen the border, and they'll force men into women's sports.
00:10:17.000 You are the last line of defense, and GOPvotes.org is your partner in the fight.
00:10:23.000 If you live in the critical Senate battleground state of Maine, Ohio, Iowa, early voting is already underway this week.
00:10:32.000 Go to GOPvotes.org right now and make a plan to vote early.
00:10:37.000 Paid for by SLF PAC, not authorized by any candidate or candidates committee.
00:10:42.000 Now, let's get into it.
00:10:44.000 Guys, we'll start in New York, where every Democrat official treats taxpayer money like it's someone else's problem. 0.87
00:10:51.000 And Letitia James walked into last night's attorney general debate ready to do what she always does talk about Trump, posture about Trump, obsess about Trump.
00:11:04.000 Her Republican opponent, a longtime federal prosecutor, brought up one subject James would rather bury under another speech about my father her own Medicaid fraud control unit.
00:11:18.000 The federal numbers are brutal, guys.
00:11:21.000 HHS Inspector General found that New York's unit received 2,121 patient abuse or neglect referrals in fiscal 2025 and produced one, okay, one conviction.
00:11:35.000 One, that's it, out of over 2,000.
00:11:38.000 And that failure was shown on the debate page very clearly.
00:11:43.000 Just watch.
00:11:44.000 Of eight, she gets 2,000 patient abuse complaints a year and gets maybe one or two convictions.
00:11:51.000 That means someone's punching an elderly patient in the nursing home and no one's doing anything.
00:11:57.000 It's lost money.
00:11:58.000 It's pain for patients.
00:11:59.000 It's lost medical care.
00:12:01.000 So think about that, guys.
00:12:02.000 More than 2,000 referrals.
00:12:05.000 One conviction?
00:12:06.000 That's the Letitia James scoreboard.
00:12:09.000 Trump obsession first, vulnerable patients dead last, right?
00:12:13.000 We can go after Trump.
00:12:14.000 We can get some headlines.
00:12:15.000 We can do this.
00:12:15.000 And so the people who are actually victims of things that actually need the help that is her job, they just get passed over.
00:12:21.000 Nothing actually happens.
00:12:23.000 But then James handed over the campaign ad herself.
00:12:28.000 Because her exact words were, and I quote, you don't have to look at the facts and the law.
00:12:34.000 Really?
00:12:36.000 Then what exactly is the attorney general looking at?
00:12:39.000 If you don't look at the facts or the law, what are you looking at, Leticia?
00:12:43.000 Watch.
00:12:44.000 I have to look at the facts and the law.
00:12:46.000 When I'm attorney general on January 1, I'll do that.
00:12:48.000 You don't have to look at the facts and the law.
00:12:49.000 All you have to do is study what they do.
00:12:51.000 It is illegal in the state of New York.
00:12:52.000 Well, there you go.
00:12:53.000 You don't have to look at the facts and the law, gentlemen.
00:12:55.000 You're attorney general.
00:12:55.000 Ms. Comet's ready.
00:12:57.000 Facts and the law. 0.56
00:12:58.000 Apparently optional when the target is a Republican.
00:13:02.000 And this is the same politician who campaigned for attorney general, promising she'd go into every office every day suing him, meaning my father.
00:13:13.000 New Yorkers don't have an impartial attorney general.
00:13:16.000 They have a Democrat campaign operation with subpoena power.
00:13:20.000 And the patients her office was supposed to protect are the ones who ultimately paid the price.
00:13:27.000 Now, out in California, where the political class wants you starting anywhere, You know, just stare at, start wherever you want, except for the invoice, because Nick Shirley went through Los Angeles looking at hospice and home health care businesses collecting taxpayer money.
00:13:44.000 He found one listed hospice that he said had billed about $2.5 million.
00:13:51.000 One at home.
00:13:52.000 But when he reached the location, it was shockingly nowhere to be found.
00:13:56.000 Then he found more operations clustered around empty storefronts.
00:14:02.000 Huh.
00:14:03.000 Where have we seen this before?
00:14:05.000 It almost reminds me of Minnesota and the Leering Centers for childcare.
00:14:10.000 This is what the street level version looks like.
00:14:13.000 Check it out.
00:14:15.000 When we arrived, it was nowhere to be found, but there was a bunch of new hospices that had popped up.
00:14:20.000 So, this is how crazy this hospice fraud is here inside of California.
00:14:24.000 You have all these businesses.
00:14:26.000 They literally open up a business, they just put HFS Hospice Carry Inc., they don't do anything with the storefront.
00:14:32.000 And then you have another one right here, Relief Home Healthcare.
00:14:39.000 Absolutely empty inside.
00:14:42.000 And then you have another one.
00:14:45.000 SKH home health care.
00:14:47.000 They're just popping up everywhere.
00:14:49.000 So, this isn't some random thing that's happening here inside of California and Los Angeles in this Van Nuys area.
00:14:54.000 Quite literally, we've been to two locations so far, and they're just popping up these home health care, these hospice centers, and they're not even doing anything.
00:15:03.000 Justice Department prosecutors charged eight people in schemes alleging more than $50 million in intended losses, including hospice bills for beneficiaries who were not terminally ill.
00:15:15.000 And services that weren't medically necessary or weren't even provided.
00:15:20.000 Then follow the Newsom money. 0.95
00:15:23.000 Recent tax filings reviewed by the Daily Mail showed Jennifer Seibel Newsom and her company received about $300,000 a year from her nonprofit.
00:15:33.000 While reporters looking at Gavin Newsom's taxes got more than 700 pages they could view but not copy.
00:15:40.000 You know, you can look at it in a room over here, but you can't copy it.
00:15:43.000 I wonder why.
00:15:45.000 Follow the wildfire money, too, guys.
00:15:47.000 NBC Los Angeles found in May that about $895 million, almost a billion dollars, of the state's initial $1.5 billion fire fund was still unused.
00:16:00.000 Why?
00:16:01.000 Those homes should be rebuilt. 0.75
00:16:02.000 They're not.
00:16:03.000 They barely even started.
00:16:05.000 While about $14 million had paid for CHP deployments during immigration protests.
00:16:11.000 So they deployed.
00:16:13.000 I mean, think about how insane that is.
00:16:15.000 Just using the California Highway Patrol, that's it.
00:16:16.000 That's all they could come up with during immigration protests.
00:16:19.000 I mean, then.
00:16:22.000 There's this.
00:16:23.000 Former Ramada Inn, Los Angeles.
00:16:28.000 In about 2020, it brought in about $10.2 million.
00:16:32.000 The total project climbed to roughly $20 million for 32 supportive housing units.
00:16:38.000 It's a lot for 32 supportive housing units.
00:16:41.000 It was supposed to be for combating homelessness, but it doesn't seem like much is actually happening there either.
00:16:48.000 Nick went on the site, and this is what he found.
00:16:51.000 Now, that just goes to show how.
00:16:53.000 How bad the system is, where in its own state, in its own city, it takes up to six years after they purchase it to even make any sort of progress.
00:17:01.000 I mean, this is all the progress you're seeing here inside the state of California.
00:17:05.000 It's a little.
00:17:06.000 That is about $625,000 per unit, six years after the purchase, with the project still nowhere near completion.
00:17:17.000 So, what did California do when Nick kept showing people the books and ultimately the buildings or the lack of buildings?
00:17:24.000 Newsom signed AB 2624, the Stop Nick Shirley Act, a law that can force journalists to pull truthful information about immigration service providers.
00:17:36.000 You can't make this up.
00:17:38.000 They couldn't make the invoices disappear, so they tried to make the camera disappear.
00:17:44.000 So, what do you think else they're hiding, guys?
00:17:46.000 I imagine there's a lot.
00:17:49.000 And now the Trump administration just aimed the same basic question at nine of the biggest universities in America Where did the money go?
00:17:57.000 Who got the job, and was the visa system abused?
00:18:02.000 Yesterday, Labor Department Inspector General announced an investigation into alleged J1 visa fraud at Harvard, Yale, Stanford, MIT, Brown, Caltech, UC Davis, Arizona State, and Pitt.
00:18:13.000 Check this out.
00:18:15.000 Inside my partner, Secretary Keith Sonderling, I am announcing a historic investigation into the J1 visa fraud involving nine major American universities Pitt, Yale, Harvard, Stanford, Brown, UC Davis, and Caltech, Arizona State, and MIT.
00:18:37.000 Subpoenas have been served, investigations are underway, and nobody will be getting a free pass because their name is carved into an expensive building.
00:18:50.000 Prestige, you know, or fancy alumni networks doesn't grant you immunity.
00:18:55.000 An endowment isn't a hall pass, and a fancy Latin motto does not give you cover.
00:19:01.000 Now, the J1 is an exchange visa often used for researchers, professors, and graduate students.
00:19:08.000 The issue here is simple whether elite schools use that system to undercut American workers on federally funded work.
00:19:17.000 Permanent job, temporary visa.
00:19:20.000 That's the whole scam in four words.
00:19:22.000 Watch JD Vance explain.
00:19:25.000 I want to make one final announcement here because while we see a lot of H 1B visa fraud, we also see a lot of J 1 visa fraud. 0.96
00:19:32.000 And this is where some of America's most elite universities bring in foreigners, again, to undercut the wages of American residents. 0.85
00:19:39.000 Now, there are nine universities in particular that we believe merit an investigation. 1.00
00:19:45.000 Those universities are Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Brown, the University of Pittsburgh, UC Davis, Caltech, Arizona State, and MIT.
00:19:53.000 And what we see is that when you employ an American worker as a graduate student, as a researcher, they're making about $20,000 more than someone brought in under a J-1 visa.
00:20:04.000 And importantly, these universities are employing J-1 visas for federally funded grants at a rate of about 61%.
00:20:11.000 The national average is 38%.
00:20:13.000 So, something weird is going on at these universities. 0.53
00:20:15.000 They're using these visas way too much.
00:20:18.000 They're using them to undercut the wages of American grad students and American researchers, and it simply has to stop.
00:20:25.000 And whether it's visa fraud, healthcare fraud, or frankly, any other kind of fraud, it needs to be at the top of your mind when you go to vote in the midterms.
00:20:34.000 Okay?
00:20:34.000 Don't forget that.
00:20:36.000 It's so important, guys.
00:20:38.000 Okay?
00:20:39.000 I get it.
00:20:39.000 We talk about it a lot.
00:20:40.000 I know gas prices are high.
00:20:41.000 There's things that are not perfect, but.
00:20:43.000 Crime rates are down.
00:20:44.000 Rents are coming down.
00:20:46.000 Inward investment in the economy is going up.
00:20:48.000 Jobs are going through the roof.
00:20:50.000 They're building the future of our country.
00:20:53.000 The left takes over.
00:20:54.000 The border opens.
00:20:56.000 All those things gone. 1.00
00:20:57.000 Trans kids back in school.
00:20:59.000 Trans agendas back in school, in your classrooms, with your children.
00:21:02.000 Just listen to all the things we've talked about on all the other shows about what they actually intend on doing.
00:21:07.000 You know, all that stuff they don't say in front of the mainstream media because the mainstream media wouldn't cover it anyway, but seem to say a lot on.
00:21:13.000 Hidden camera when they don't know the video's actually rolling.
00:21:17.000 So make sure you guys are engaged.
00:21:21.000 Well, guys, joining me now, America First Legal President Gene Hamilton.
00:21:25.000 Gene, welcome back to the show.
00:21:26.000 How are you doing?
00:21:27.000 Hey, thanks for having me on.
00:21:28.000 I really appreciate it.
00:21:30.000 So, again, welcome back.
00:21:31.000 You know, people know Nick Shirley, obviously, from the Minnesota daycare investigations, the hits on the ground reporting, all the things that he has been finding in California.
00:21:44.000 You represent him legally and otherwise.
00:21:48.000 Tell us a little bit about that, especially the California response, because I thought that was sort of interesting given all of the noise that's out there right now.
00:21:56.000 Well, look, you're exactly right.
00:21:58.000 The American people all know and recognize Nick is a patriot.
00:22:02.000 Nick is doing what people should have been doing for decades before him, which is exposing stuff that's just out there in the open, all the fraud that's going on.
00:22:11.000 And it's taken leadership from your father, the president, and his administration to root out and combat this fraud.
00:22:18.000 But Nick goes out there with a camera, right?
00:22:20.000 He goes out and he just exposes what anyone else could expose, but no one else had the guts to do.
00:22:26.000 And so he's exposing this stuff.
00:22:28.000 He's targeting some of these just.
00:22:30.000 Obvious fraud centers or alleged fraud centers.
00:22:34.000 I believe it was the Leering Center.
00:22:37.000 So much learning, we can't even spell it.
00:22:40.000 Yeah, yeah, nothing like it.
00:22:42.000 I mean, it really is rich what he exposed.
00:22:46.000 It's absolutely crazy.
00:22:48.000 Now, fast forward from Minnesota.
00:22:52.000 So Nick exposes all of this stuff in Minnesota.
00:22:55.000 Then he moves on to California.
00:22:58.000 And we built this timeline out in the lawsuit.
00:23:02.000 We represent Nick Shirley, as you just mentioned.
00:23:05.000 In a lawsuit against some officials in the state of California.
00:23:08.000 So Nick shows up in California at the end of January.
00:23:11.000 Within days, the California government is in Gavin Newsom's press office.
00:23:17.000 They're agitating against him, they're saying things about him, going back and forth.
00:23:21.000 Nick is saying, I'm going to expose some fraud.
00:23:23.000 Officials in California are saying, You're harassing people.
00:23:26.000 And then within a couple of weeks, the attorney general's wife introduces a bill intended to stop the kind of activities that Nick Shirley is up to.
00:23:35.000 So obviously, exposing fraud, exposing fraud by people, especially.
00:23:40.000 What is known under this law that they eventually passed and the Gavin Newsom signed into law for immigration support services providers, right?
00:23:50.000 So these are people who provide services to quote unquote immigrants across the state of California.
00:23:56.000 And they are saying that if you are a person who exposes the information about these people, that you can then be subject to liability, civil liability to the tune of thousands of dollars and orders saying that you cannot show this person's information.
00:24:13.000 On camera and publicly identify who these people are who are engaged in this fraud.
00:24:19.000 It's one of the craziest things you could ever imagine.
00:24:21.000 Yeah, it was literally like he drops the video and it was like, what, like three or four days, and left wing lawmakers are introducing a bill to basically stop him from literally exposing fraud.
00:24:31.000 I mean, just the insanity of that.
00:24:34.000 It's not like, well, he did it wrong or he didn't get something right or it was malicious, but it was like, no, no, no, rather than fix the fraud, we're just going to stop you from exposing it.
00:24:43.000 I mean, That's insane.
00:24:45.000 I mean, what should it tell the court, you know, frankly?
00:24:49.000 I mean, and maybe the California courts are just all in on this and they're just, you know, they're fine.
00:24:54.000 They're fine with it.
00:24:54.000 So maybe nothing actually changes.
00:24:56.000 But what should that tell the American people beyond the courts?
00:24:59.000 Well, I think what it should tell the American people is that when you are so captured by leftism in your institutions, right, like the state of California is, that you have people who are so committed to the fraud and perpetuating the fraud because they have other ends, they have other.
00:25:17.000 Things that they want to accomplish through the use of the fraud that this is what happens.
00:25:23.000 So, you have somebody who actually shows up and actually tries to stop it and tries to expose it.
00:25:28.000 And yet, you have officials in their family members at the highest levels of the California government trying to silence it, trying to stop it, trying to stop Nick from speaking out and exposing this stuff.
00:25:38.000 And so, of course, we all know, as goes California, California is a leader for the liberals and for the left.
00:25:44.000 And so, what's going to happen if this succeeds?
00:25:48.000 If they are able to stop Nick from exposing, or if they're able to reduce his ability to expose all of the fraud that's going on, you know for a fact that every single other blue state out there is going to try to copy this.
00:26:01.000 They are going to try to replicate this law, create more legal regimes that stop people from exposing wrongdoing, stop people from exposing the fraud and all of the illegality that's going on in these blue states.
00:26:15.000 And they're going to try to shut down the Americans' First Amendment rights, the American people's First Amendment rights, all across this country beyond just the borders of California.
00:26:24.000 Yeah, you know, when California does it, New York's going to do it.
00:26:27.000 I mean, California calls it, you know, it's an anti doxing law for immigration support workers.
00:26:31.000 It's like, really?
00:26:33.000 I don't know.
00:26:34.000 Doesn't seem like that, but, you know, it's obviously not what it is.
00:26:38.000 You know, so what's your legal strategy to take this on?
00:26:41.000 Because again, you know, hey, I've been there.
00:26:43.000 You know, when the New York courts go after us, it's like, You know, you don't.
00:26:47.000 You judge, jury, executioner all hate your guts. 0.89
00:26:50.000 The letter of the law be damned. 0.98
00:26:52.000 Statute of limitations no longer matter.
00:26:55.000 We'll rewrite the law to be able to prosecute you, but no one else for a short period of time just so we can get that in.
00:27:00.000 I mean, those are all the things they literally did to us.
00:27:02.000 So, how do you take that on?
00:27:05.000 Yeah.
00:27:05.000 No, look, you know, you just thought it out.
00:27:08.000 You know this better than anybody, perhaps.
00:27:10.000 Just the way that the left uses lawfare to try to silence conservatives or to go after their political opponents or to do anything.
00:27:18.000 They use every tool imaginable.
00:27:20.000 So, we filed a lawsuit on Nick's behalf in federal court in California.
00:27:24.000 Now, look, we'll see what happens.
00:27:27.000 We are confident, we are absolutely confident that the law that California passed violates the First Amendment.
00:27:34.000 We have a lot of great arguments that we've laid out.
00:27:36.000 What we've asked for is a preliminary injunction from the court that says that the officials in California who are charged with enforcement of this regime, so the Secretary of State in the state of California, who is responsible for administering this regime that allows people to register.
00:27:52.000 With the states, their existence of their immigration support services provider, business, or whatever the case may be, and to stop them from being able to use this against Nick.
00:28:02.000 Now, the law doesn't technically kick in until October 1st of next year.
00:28:08.000 But so, why would we go into court now?
00:28:10.000 Well, it's because this is already could have a chilling effect on Nick's behavior or the behavior of other people across the country.
00:28:16.000 They don't care what happens after two years.
00:28:17.000 They want to get through a 28-person presidential cycle, and then whatever happens, we're in control.
00:28:21.000 We'll rewrite the laws at a higher level at that point.
00:28:24.000 Exactly, exactly.
00:28:25.000 That's precisely right.
00:28:27.000 And one of the other things that they're trying to do is that they're trying to use this law, and the law imposes liability on people for things that are in existence on that day, October 1st, 2027.
00:28:40.000 So if somebody reposts or if Nick reposts one of his videos from right now, what it does is it exposes him, it opens him up to liability potentially down the line, even after the effective date.
00:28:52.000 And so right now, what it's trying to do, the officials and state, The state of California.
00:28:56.000 We're trying to get Nick to go through all of his videos and take down all of the examples of fraud.
00:29:01.000 They want him to not report on these things.
00:29:03.000 They want other people like Nick to not report on these things.
00:29:06.000 They don't want people talking about this stuff because it's inconvenient to their political ends.
00:29:11.000 So we're proud to represent Nick.
00:29:12.000 I think we're going to prevail in federal court.
00:29:15.000 I know we will at some level, whether it's in the district court, the court of appeals, the Supreme Court, eventually.
00:29:21.000 We are going to do what's right.
00:29:22.000 We're going to win for Nick and beyond just for Nick, also for the broader, more broadly speaking, for the people of California and for the American people.
00:29:29.000 Yeah, Gene, it seems like a really slippery slope, right? 0.97
00:29:32.000 I mean, you see what's going on in the UK where, you know, a mother could, their daughter could get raped by a migrant gang of, you know, roving sociopaths. 1.00
00:29:42.000 And she's like, these people shouldn't be in our country. 0.99
00:29:45.000 Just like literally a grieving mother, you know, with a victim daughter of a rape gang.
00:29:51.000 And the person that tweets about it and then perhaps promotes the tweet gets more jail time than the rapist.
00:29:56.000 I mean, what does that say about where we are as a society?
00:29:59.000 I mean, this is a, you know, you said slippery slope, but man, this feels like a slippery cliff because if this ever happened, I mean, there's no stopping the insanity from continuing.
00:30:11.000 Yeah.
00:30:11.000 I mean, look, it's, you're 100% right about that because look, This is beyond a slippery slope.
00:30:17.000 It is a slippery cliff because all it's going to take is for this is the way the left operates.
00:30:22.000 They try to weaponize our institutions, they try to weaponize the ability of its foot soldiers to inflict harm upon people who believe differently or who think differently.
00:30:36.000 And so sometimes that's using other actors, other private actors.
00:30:40.000 Most of the time, it involves using the government to silence dissent.
00:30:44.000 And we saw what they did under the Biden administration.
00:30:47.000 It's not been that long ago.
00:30:48.000 People forget.
00:30:49.000 I mean, it's only been a few years since the Biden administration was caught with its pants down in bed with big companies that were silencing American speech online on different platforms.
00:31:00.000 Yeah, that was Governor Jeff Landry and now Senator Eric Schmidt when they were both in their attorney general capacities, both in Missouri and Louisiana.
00:31:11.000 They took that on because it was them coordinating with, I guess, Meta at the time and Facebook to basically be like, nope, these are the talking points.
00:31:18.000 Anything else gets you banned, blocked, whatever it was.
00:31:20.000 And They were just forbidding anything that wasn't literally dictated essentially from the White House.
00:31:26.000 And, you know, that again, slippery cliff.
00:31:30.000 Yeah.
00:31:30.000 No, you have to be vigilant.
00:31:32.000 I mean, the American people, if you're just an average American, much less a conservative, you have to be vigilant.
00:31:38.000 You have to be ready.
00:31:39.000 And you have to recognize when the left is trying to take things down that don't serve its interest.
00:31:44.000 And they're trying to silence dissent.
00:31:45.000 They're trying to silence speech.
00:31:47.000 They're trying to indoctrinate people with their kind of ideology and their mindset, which just goes against the American ethos.
00:31:53.000 It goes against the American Constitution.
00:31:56.000 And we are the last kind of beacon of hope in the world, I think.
00:32:00.000 I mean, you just pointed out the UK and the examples there.
00:32:04.000 And that's supposedly in the Western civilization.
00:32:07.000 Yeah.
00:32:08.000 You're like, hey, they're probably pretty much like us.
00:32:10.000 It's like, no.
00:32:12.000 But they're where we will be in a few years if we don't put an end to this stuff right away.
00:32:18.000 Exactly.
00:32:19.000 100%.
00:32:20.000 And so, this is why this case is so important for Nick, and we're so proud to fight for Nick, but it has broader implications across the country.
00:32:27.000 And the American people just need to understand, they need to remember.
00:32:30.000 This is what's happening in California, but it's not going to be isolated to California.
00:32:35.000 It's not only going to spread there and to other blue states, but if the left seizes power at the national level, at the federal level, these are the types of things that they're going to look to try to do to continue to perpetuate their schemes against the American people, against the government, against our taxpayers.
00:32:51.000 And we have to stop it.
00:32:53.000 We all have to collectively do our part to stop these things.
00:32:56.000 Yeah, because more broadly, to the people watching and to the American people, what's it say?
00:33:03.000 To all of you, when California lawmakers are more interested in literally going after the people finding the fraud, finding the fraud, exposing the fraud, instead of actually going after the fraudsters themselves.
00:33:16.000 I mean, this is literally like giving fraudsters a carte blanche to continue doing what they're doing.
00:33:23.000 Well, it's just wild because if you had any kind of reasonable government, any reasonable government officials in the state of California, they would say, first, oh my God, well, thank you, Nick Shirley.
00:33:33.000 Thank you for exposing this information.
00:33:36.000 Thank you for letting us find these people who are stealing money from the people of California and bringing it to our attention.
00:33:43.000 No, what's the thanks he gets?
00:33:45.000 He gets a bill that gets, it's not officially named after him, but it's, you know, colloquially named after him, the Stop Nick Shirley Act.
00:33:53.000 And that's the thanks that the state of California gets because they don't want, apparently, they don't want to stop the fraud.
00:33:58.000 What they want to do is perpetuate it and they want to stop Nick from exposing what they are doing and what they are up to.
00:34:04.000 All right, but yeah, I get it.
00:34:05.000 The government and the leftists on that side, I mean, it's, you know, the People's Republic of California for a reason.
00:34:10.000 They may want that, but where are the people of California?
00:34:13.000 Like, you know, again, like we talk about it.
00:34:15.000 Nick's been on the show.
00:34:16.000 I talk about it all the time, his exposés. 0.90
00:34:20.000 It's amazing, but like I don't see like a civic uprising in California of like California taxpayers be like, this is ridiculous.
00:34:27.000 Like, we don't have the services we could have for our own families, for our own children.
00:34:34.000 Our infrastructure is lacking because it could be billions of dollars just being pilfered from the coffers to.
00:34:42.000 Support these grains.
00:34:45.000 It makes no sense to me.
00:34:46.000 I mean, is there a sort of grassroots uprising that's actually happening, or are people still sort of oblivious to it because it's just not covered by the news there and no one will actually talk about it?
00:34:58.000 What happens?
00:34:59.000 Yeah, look, I think it's probably a little bit more of the latter, which is sad.
00:35:02.000 I think eventually there's hope for the state of California.
00:35:05.000 I mean, I love to see the kind of traction that Steve Hilton's trying to gain out there and the way that that race is going.
00:35:11.000 But there's still just not enough.
00:35:13.000 Amongst the people of California, which is a real shame because California, of course, is one of the most beautiful states in the entire country.
00:35:18.000 It's blessed by riches of just natural beauty and resources and all kinds of geographical advantages and industries that were there, but they're running it down into the ground.
00:35:29.000 And that is exactly what the left will do to every institution across this country if people aren't willing to open their eyes and say, Oh my God, what is happening to my home?
00:35:39.000 What is happening to where I live, to my community, the world around me?
00:35:43.000 I'm going to do something about it.
00:35:45.000 And so if you think it's just, again, If people at home are sitting there thinking, oh, well, it's just crazy California, that's just what happens.
00:35:52.000 People remember this is just a short span of history.
00:35:55.000 This has been in the last several decades that they have run that state into the ground, a place that produced Ronald Reagan for the country, is now one of the most left wing extreme governments in the entire country.
00:36:10.000 And it happened practically from a historical perspective overnight.
00:36:14.000 Yeah, I mean, when Nick warned this bill could really hit journalists, not just himself, but with fines and other things, Assemblywoman Mia Bontas' answer was, Womp, womp.
00:36:24.000 And her husband is the attorney general, Rob Bonta, who gets to enforce all of this.
00:36:29.000 He's also the guy you're suing.
00:36:32.000 How does that play in front of a judge?
00:36:33.000 And again, I asked about where the people are.
00:36:36.000 Where are other journalists?
00:36:38.000 I mean, it's their job.
00:36:39.000 You would think that this would be a big, juicy story for literally the biggest names in journalism, not a young guy like Nick, who's starting out and was doing a lot of this with an iPhone recorder when he started doing it.
00:36:52.000 He's since grown because.
00:36:54.000 He's doing the job that they're supposed to be doing, that they refuse to do.
00:36:57.000 But what happens with that?
00:37:00.000 It seems like an incredible conflict.
00:37:02.000 Yeah, I mean, it appears to me, and as we allege in the facts of the case, I mean, you don't have to be a rocket scientist for the folks at home to connect the dots here, to figure out what's going on.
00:37:15.000 The Attorney General of the state of California is the person who's charged with enforcing some of the provisions of this law.
00:37:21.000 He's, of course, the chief law enforcement officer in the state of California, and his wife.
00:37:26.000 Introduces this legislation.
00:37:27.000 She's the lead sponsor of this legislation that's intended to go after this person who is who Rob Banta, quite frankly, should be thinking.
00:37:35.000 Rob Banta should be going to Nick Shirley and shaking his hand for exposing things and giving them leads.
00:37:41.000 This is actually his job, not Nick's.
00:37:44.000 Right, right, exactly.
00:37:46.000 So, I mean, you know, it's just so frustrating because for the folks at home, everyone at home who thinks about it, looks at the facts, and sitting on their couch, maybe they're watching a show, watching the news or something, if it was presented to them the way that we're presenting it to them and the way that Nick presents the story, they would all say, well, this is clearly a problem.
00:38:07.000 This is clearly wrong.
00:38:09.000 But to your point, Don, to your point, where are the rest of the news outlets?
00:38:14.000 Where are the traditional legacy media outlets who are out there saying, oh my God, the Attorney General of California's wife introduced a bill to try to target journalists from exposing information and to stop them from exposing information?
00:38:27.000 This is the kind of thing that, if it was replicated on the right, would be, you know, oh, this would be a major scandal.
00:38:34.000 I mean, you'd hear nothing, you'd hear about nothing other than this.
00:38:38.000 I mean, so talk about that a little bit because, again, like Nick has.
00:38:42.000 You, he is America First Legal in his corner.
00:38:45.000 Most independent journalists don't.
00:38:47.000 I mean, I'm sure there's a lot of guys that want to get into journalism or young ladies that want to get into journalism.
00:38:51.000 They see what Nick's done.
00:38:52.000 It's like, wow, we can actually do this.
00:38:54.000 There's a window because it seems like no one else is actually willing to do the job.
00:39:00.000 The guy with an iPhone, maybe a YouTube channel, but they can't afford to fight a federal lawsuit.
00:39:08.000 Is that the real point here?
00:39:10.000 Just scare everyone else off so they can't fight back?
00:39:12.000 It's sort of like, You know, when the left went after Trump so hard, it's like it wasn't just to go after Trump because I hate Trump.
00:39:19.000 It's they hate the idea of anyone else coming in from outside of that system, outside of their ecosphere, you know, and shaking things up.
00:39:25.000 So it was about, you know, sending a message to anyone else who may try to get in the game.
00:39:30.000 100%.
00:39:30.000 That's exactly it.
00:39:31.000 That is exactly what they tried to do to the president.
00:39:35.000 That's exactly what they tried to do to the entire family and obviously the entire apparatus around him.
00:39:41.000 They're doing the same thing here for Nick because.
00:39:44.000 They want to create the conditions.
00:39:46.000 If you look at this law and you look at the way that it's written, if you're an independent journalist or even if you're somebody who has certain stature in the field and you look at the liability that you could face just for exposing fraud from some of these immigration support services providers, you would say, Well, God, I don't want to deal with the hassle of this because it's not just the ultimate judgment, it's not just the ultimate fine that is issued that is the problem.
00:40:14.000 It's the entire process.
00:40:16.000 It's having to go then hire a lawyer to defend you against one of these cases that gets filed against you by somebody who just says, you know what?
00:40:24.000 I don't like what he said.
00:40:25.000 I don't have any reason to believe that there's any hostility behind what the person said, but I'm going to haul you into court anyways.
00:40:31.000 And one of the things that shows that this is their intent is the process, the pain from the process being the point, is that there's an attorney's fees provision in this law that only works one way.
00:40:44.000 So if you're Nick Shirley or if you're some other journalist and you get sued, And you end up winning on your case, you don't get the ability to recover attorney's fees under the statutory regime they passed.
00:40:56.000 However, if you're one of these other people who brings one of these meritless claims and then your case settles or you eventually win or whatever the case may be, you get your attorney's fees.
00:41:05.000 And anyone who has any exposure to the legal system and lawyers understands that those can be significant financial burdens that are imposed on you, even from just having a process that's ongoing that doesn't even get to final judgment.
00:41:19.000 And again, that's part of the point.
00:41:22.000 It allows the bad guys to play with house money because they know they're going to get their stuff covered.
00:41:25.000 It allows the plaintiff's guys to be able to come in there and fight it because they're probably going to get it on contingency and then they spend the rest of eternity going after the person exposing the fraud.
00:41:35.000 It's wild.
00:41:36.000 Again, we know the legacy media isn't showing up on this, but has anyone?
00:41:41.000 Because I mean, I feel like, honestly, if California passed a law that lets someone force the LA Times to pull a story, again, you'd never hear the end of it.
00:41:50.000 It would be like, oh my God, that's a threat to democracy or Nazi fascist.
00:41:54.000 Go down the usual checklist.
00:41:57.000 And yet, crickets.
00:41:59.000 Yeah, I mean, it's absolute crickets.
00:42:00.000 And one of the other things that's really rich about this law.
00:42:04.000 In the legislature in California, the intent they described kind of the current administration's hostility towards immigrants.
00:42:10.000 And so that was one of the reasons why they claimed that they needed this law to stop the doxing of these immigration support services providers.
00:42:18.000 But these same left wing institutions, these same politicians, some of these same institutes in the media don't have any problems whatsoever with the doxing of law enforcement, with the doxing of an ICE officer or an agent who is out there trying to deport.
00:42:38.000 Or, by the way, Nick himself, right?
00:42:39.000 If California gets away with it, we understand that New York's next, but what stops every blue state from copying it?
00:42:45.000 Minnesota, because Nick exposed that.
00:42:47.000 Minnesota would love a law like this because they could go back and they could sue him and then pretend like there wasn't hundreds of millions of dollars of fraud committed upon the taxpayer of Minnesota to the benefit of Somalians and Al Shabaab ultimately, or whatever terror group that Boko Haram, who the hell knows.
00:43:08.000 Whichever terror group half those people were sending it overseas to, I mean, it would never end.
00:43:13.000 I mean, it's literally, it feels like we're actually talking about like a South Park episode, right?
00:43:18.000 Like it's like, it's like, this can't be real.
00:43:21.000 And yet here we are.
00:43:22.000 Yeah.
00:43:22.000 I mean, it's the kind of thing that if you had told someone, if you laid this out 20 years ago in a South Park episode or 30 years ago in a Saturday Night Live skit or something, it's the kind of thing that would be a joke.
00:43:33.000 People would say, this could not be reality in the United States of America.
00:43:37.000 Yet here we are.
00:43:38.000 Here we are.
00:43:39.000 And that's why it's important for people to be vigilant.
00:43:42.000 That's why people have to fight back.
00:43:43.000 That's why conservatives and just normal Americans have to be willing to step in and step up and fight every time the left tries to force one of these things down their throats, some new law or some new regime, or to try to do some new tactic to change the laws and to change things to disadvantage conservatives or normal Americans.
00:44:03.000 That's why they have to be willing to step up and to fight back.
00:44:07.000 Yeah.
00:44:07.000 So, Gene, how does this case really tie into America First Legal's mission?
00:44:12.000 Uh, you know, more broadly, and what does it say about sort of the entrenched lawfare we're up against, you know, in these leftist, you know, blue states like California?
00:44:20.000 Well, it's a great question.
00:44:22.000 Look, when Stephen and I started America First Legal, it's because we looked around at the world and realized that there wasn't the equivalent of, you know, an ACLU on the right, some good organizations that were out there, but there's nobody who was out there kind of fighting for American principles, traditional American principles and values, and the constitution and laws of the United States.
00:44:41.000 And one of the things that I think is most compelling about this particular story is here you have.
00:44:47.000 America First Legal, an organization that's only five years old, stepping up to represent Nick Shirley and to sue the state of California to stop the enforcement of this law against him.
00:44:57.000 Now, meanwhile, the American Civil Liberties Union and some of these other left wing groups that are out there, supposedly in favor of free speech, supposedly out there in favor of the First Amendment, are out there using all of their time and resources defending illegal aliens and trying to sue the President of the United States and sue the administration for every single thing that they try to do.
00:45:19.000 So, it's what this represents for us more broadly this is just another front in our battle.
00:45:27.000 For the American people, for the country, whether it's this, whether it's stopping schools from transiting kids, whether it's stopping ridiculous DEI programs, whether it's fighting illegal immigration, wherever it is, defending sheriffs across the country, whatever the case may be, there has always been a need for the right to fight back and to go on offense while also trying to play defense and trying to step up and do the same types of things the left does,
00:45:55.000 but do them actually for good and for virtuous purposes. 0.94
00:45:59.000 Yeah, no, and I agree with that.
00:46:00.000 And you see that right now.
00:46:01.000 And I get that everyone has not gotten 100% of everything that they wanted, even though there's a lot of great gains out there.
00:46:06.000 But we sort of sit there and be like, well, my guy didn't win the primary, so I'm just going to sit at home and let the Democrat win.
00:46:11.000 It's like, that'll teach him.
00:46:12.000 I'm like, well, no, why don't we get more involved in the primary and then do what the Democrats do, which is like, hey, if the Democrat Socialist of America candidate does not win, or if they do, the one that was the alleged moderate still goes and votes for them 100% of the time.
00:46:28.000 If the DSA candidate doesn't win and the moderate wins, The DSA voters 100% of the time.
00:46:35.000 We sit there like, well, we're going to teach them a lesson.
00:46:37.000 The general's not the time to teach these guys that lesson.
00:46:40.000 The primary is, and we have to do a better job at that.
00:46:43.000 But to basically be like, you know what?
00:46:44.000 We're just going to let the left rule.
00:46:46.000 We'll open up the border. 0.78
00:46:47.000 We'll stop the drilling.
00:46:49.000 We'll allow the crime to start back up again when murder rates are down, when violent crime rates are down, when rents are dropping down because of the deportations.
00:46:57.000 There's a lot of objective wins.
00:47:00.000 We're just going to give that all back because.
00:47:04.000 It's sort of crazy to me, but they just play a very different game that I think we have to learn.
00:47:07.000 Yeah, you're 100% right.
00:47:09.000 Look, conservatives can't stay home, whether that's when it comes to courts of law, whether it comes to the ballot box, whether it comes to anything.
00:47:18.000 People have to realize that the other side is not going to stop.
00:47:22.000 And they are going to do exactly what you just said.
00:47:24.000 It's like, look, I mean, the DSA is on the rise.
00:47:26.000 They're running candidates all across the country, but they're not going to sit at home on their hands if their candidate doesn't win in the primaries.
00:47:33.000 They're going to go and support the person who wins.
00:47:36.000 Who represents and is going to help advance the policies that they generally believe in.
00:47:42.000 And yet, on the other side, a lot of folks sit there and say, oh, you know, the Trump administration, they're not doing anything, or I don't like this one thing that they did.
00:47:49.000 I don't like this other one thing that they did.
00:47:52.000 And they completely disregard the fact that if the other side seizes power, their life, whether it's when it comes to crime, whether when it comes to immigration, whether when it comes to the cost of living, gas prices, inflation, all those things are going to be demonstrably worse.
00:48:07.000 Yeah, you think gas prices are high right now, and I think that's all fixable, but wait till they stop drilling.
00:48:14.000 Wait till they literally ban it.
00:48:16.000 You think it's expensive.
00:48:17.000 You think rents are high now?
00:48:18.000 Rents have come down because they've deported millions of people.
00:48:22.000 Wait until they open the border again.
00:48:24.000 You think your kids are getting a bad education now? 1.00
00:48:26.000 Wait until they flood the schools with people who can't speak English. 1.00
00:48:28.000 Yes. 1.00
00:48:30.000 Probably not an awesome plan, but we think very differently about it.
00:48:34.000 Yeah, yeah.
00:48:35.000 I mean, it's very frustrating because.
00:48:38.000 People have to realize that you can't just show up once every four years and hope that the world is going to become revolutionarily better.
00:48:47.000 And it certainly is the case because President Trump was elected in 2024 that the world is demonstrably revolutionarily better today than it was just a few years ago.
00:48:59.000 But they have to continue.
00:49:01.000 They have to keep showing up.
00:49:03.000 They have to show up on these primaries.
00:49:04.000 They have to show up in between primaries.
00:49:06.000 They have to keep pushing forward because the other side, they don't sleep.
00:49:10.000 They don't stop.
00:49:11.000 No, their religion is taking away your freedom and pushing their Marxism and communism.
00:49:17.000 That's it.
00:49:17.000 That's what they believe.
00:49:18.000 That's their deity.
00:49:19.000 100%.
00:49:21.000 So you'd mentioned it's been about five years since you and Stephen Miller started America First Legal.
00:49:25.000 How do you reflect on that?
00:49:27.000 And what are some of the other cases we should be keeping an eye out for?
00:49:29.000 I mean, this is obviously a big one because of the First Amendment implications, the general suppression of knowledge about crying.
00:49:36.000 It's a big one, but what are some of the other ones you guys are working on, and where do people go to figure out more?
00:49:42.000 Yeah, look, and thanks for asking about us.
00:49:46.000 Folks can go to our website, aflegal.org.
00:49:48.000 We have most of our websites.
00:49:51.000 Lawsuits and investigations and exposes posted there.
00:49:56.000 But one of the things we are fighting across all kinds of issue areas.
00:49:59.000 People think, you know, thank God we have an administration in Washington that's trying to do its part to stop a lot of these illegal things that have been going on for years and years, whether that's again trans and kids in schools, whether it's DEI policies at work, whether it's any number of things, racial discrimination and university admissions.
00:50:16.000 Now, we are active in different lawsuits all across the country, all across different issue areas.
00:50:23.000 Especially when it comes to suing corporations who are engaged in illegal racial discrimination against workers.
00:50:28.000 Universities, we have an active lawsuit against the University of California school system right now related to discrimination in its undergraduate admissions on all of its campuses across the state of California.
00:50:39.000 But, Gene, I was told last week that they're really excited because graduation rates are through the roof, even though graduates do not have a basic understanding of math anymore.
00:50:50.000 You saw that headline, right?
00:50:51.000 I was like, wait, the win is that we, like, We gave them a diploma that they didn't actually earn or couldn't possibly earn at any other time in history, but they graduated.
00:51:00.000 So it's like they check that box.
00:51:02.000 It's a big win.
00:51:02.000 It's so bad.
00:51:03.000 Can't read, can't do math.
00:51:04.000 Like, who cares?
00:51:05.000 Like, you're a college graduate from a California, like, serious school system, allegedly seriously.
00:51:11.000 Yeah.
00:51:12.000 Yeah.
00:51:12.000 I mean, like, it's, I know folks probably see these online every now and then.
00:51:16.000 People, someone on social media will post one of these old tests that students had to pass like 100 years ago to pass the eighth grade.
00:51:22.000 And imagine giving that to the graduating class in a lot of these places across the state of California.
00:51:28.000 Today, and I think you would get an answer as to what exactly is happening here.
00:51:32.000 Look, we as an organization, we've celebrated fighting in these cases, but it's not enough.
00:51:38.000 We also have to build institutions, we also have to train up lawyers, we have to be willing to spread out and insert ourselves into battles all across the country.
00:51:47.000 We've already trained over 150 lawyers and deploy them across the United States.
00:51:51.000 We have a new initiative called the Next 250 that we're launching that's intended to train, hire, and mentor 250 more.
00:51:59.000 Conservative lawyers, to it's not just going to all work for us, but to work in law firms, to go work for judges, could all work for the in the Trump administration.
00:52:08.000 Well, and that's the big thing, right?
00:52:09.000 Because that's the thing you sort of mentioned earlier like the other side, you know, I said it's their religion.
00:52:13.000 You said this is all they do, this is all they think about it.
00:52:15.000 You know, the ACLU, at least on paper, is supposed to represent all Americans.
00:52:19.000 It is not, it is a hundred percent partisan organization, it is a left wing, you know, marketing machine.
00:52:27.000 It will go after all of those issues.
00:52:28.000 I can't imagine it's taken on a single conservative issue.
00:52:32.000 In the last few decades.
00:52:33.000 And yet, you look at it, oh, it's the ACLU.
00:52:37.000 But there's hundreds of those, whether you go at that level or down to the NGO level or whatever it may be.
00:52:44.000 On our side, it's like you guys and maybe one or two other people that are actually in the trenches.
00:52:50.000 We got to equalize that up or it's going to be a serious problem.
00:52:54.000 You guys can only do so much.
00:52:55.000 Right.
00:52:56.000 Yeah.
00:52:56.000 Look, I mean, just for the folks at home, it's something that's not widely known, but I think it's intuitive to most people.
00:53:02.000 The other side, every year, not just like a battleship type of thing, but every year in annual funding, over a billion dollars, over a billion dollars is going into these left wing nonprofit legal firms. 0.72
00:53:15.000 And operations to trans your kids to open up our borders to illegal immigrants, many of whom can't read, many of whom are violent offenders. 0.91
00:53:22.000 Uh, you know, that's their goal. 1.00
00:53:23.000 I mean, I don't get it.
00:53:25.000 I mean, it seems like civilizational suicide to me, but you know, yeah, it's but it's it's crazy a billion dollars every year going to these things, and it's funded and it's and they and they have an entire ecosphere and network.
00:53:38.000 Um, and they are dedicated, but as you said, I and I truly believe what you said as well, which is for a lot of these people, this is their religion.
00:53:46.000 This indoctrination and this thing is this is the God that they worship.
00:53:50.000 And so they are not going to stop worshiping.
00:53:52.000 They're not going to stop following their religion.
00:53:55.000 They're going to continue to exercise what they believe in and they're going to continue to fight for their things.
00:54:00.000 So on our side, we have to have people step up.
00:54:02.000 We have to have people willing to step up and say, No, enough.
00:54:06.000 We're going to fight back.
00:54:07.000 We are going to go wherever we can.
00:54:10.000 We're going to fight until we can't fight anymore.
00:54:13.000 You know, look, people were obviously all the work that we do is donor funded.
00:54:17.000 Folks can contribute anytime that they want to aflegal.org.
00:54:21.000 But if they're not so inclined, just spread the word.
00:54:23.000 You know, spread the word about the fact that there are people out there who are trying to do the right thing, who are trying to be helpful, who are trying to do things that should have been done for decades and decades and decades and weren't.
00:54:35.000 And so now we've got a lot of ground to catch up.
00:54:38.000 But are we going to stop?
00:54:39.000 No, we are going to keep going.
00:54:42.000 We're going to keep fighting because, you know, look, who do we have as a wonderful role model for anyone who is a Fighter, anyone who believes at their core that this country is worth saving is Donald Trump.
00:54:54.000 And if you're not willing to fight equally as hard as he is for the good of this country going forward, then, you know, I don't know.
00:55:01.000 Maybe you got to find something else to go do.
00:55:03.000 Well, Gene, I really appreciate it.
00:55:05.000 Thanks a lot, guys.
00:55:06.000 Make sure to check out aflegal.org.
00:55:08.000 You know, share it with your friends, but keep up the great work, man.
00:55:11.000 It's really important.
00:55:13.000 And make sure to, you know, give Nick our best.
00:55:15.000 I always love telling the stories again because it feels like a moment of levity.
00:55:20.000 In a crazy world, but it's actually just the craziest of the crazy parts of our world.
00:55:24.000 But just awesome stuff.
00:55:27.000 We really appreciate it.
00:55:28.000 Thanks so much.
00:55:29.000 Thanks for having me on.
00:55:29.000 Appreciate it.
00:55:31.000 In some sad news legendary football player and really legendary NFL coach, Mike Ditka passed away.
00:55:40.000 Da Bears, known as the coach.
00:55:44.000 Mike was a great guy.
00:55:46.000 He was actually on the show, but he passed away on Friday of last week.
00:55:52.000 But I remember when we did the show, I just wanted to play maybe a couple clips from that just to show everyone a great legend.
00:56:00.000 So we're all mourning his passing.
00:56:02.000 Just an incredible character, made perhaps even more famous by the Saturday Night Live skits.
00:56:08.000 So just an awesome guy, friend of the show, great American.
00:56:13.000 And just our greatest condolences to his friends and family on the passing of a legend.
00:56:20.000 Mike, thank you so much for being here with us today.
00:56:25.000 Well, I'm glad to be here.
00:56:26.000 I'm a big fan of your father's.
00:56:28.000 I'm a big fan of this country.
00:56:30.000 I want what's right for this country, and he's what's right for this country.
00:56:34.000 Well, I appreciate that.
00:56:35.000 I mean, I think, you know, there's no secret that you're known for sort of telling it like it is.
00:56:40.000 And with today and the cancel culture that we've seen out there, I mean, I loved what I saw you say the other day, which is, you know, basically, if you don't respect the flag and the country, get the hell out.
00:56:52.000 I think a lot more people probably need to hear that.
00:56:55.000 Well, you know, I grew up that way.
00:56:58.000 I mean, that's the way I grew up.
00:56:59.000 My grandparents were, my grandparents on my father's side came from the Ukraine, so they came from Russia.
00:57:06.000 But they enjoyed everything about this country, mostly the opportunity to work.
00:57:13.000 To have a job, work in the steel mill, work on the railroad.
00:57:16.000 And that's what they did.
00:57:17.000 And they were grateful for it.
00:57:19.000 They ended up, and I go back to when I was a kid, because I was in my grandmother's a lot, and they lived right down the street.
00:57:27.000 I mean, they had a nice little house.
00:57:30.000 I mean, it was very nice.
00:57:33.000 I mean, and then they had a good life. 0.99
00:57:37.000 My dad was, you know, my dad was in the Marines, came home from the Marines, and I got to know him real good because he whipped my ass a lot, but that's okay. 0.99
00:57:46.000 He was a good man. 0.99
00:57:47.000 He kept me out of a lot of trouble.
00:57:50.000 Well, I think some kids probably need a little bit more of that.
00:57:53.000 I have a similar story.
00:57:55.000 Obviously, I was very blessed as an American, but my mother escaped communist Czechoslovakia.
00:58:00.000 So, just a little bit west of the Ukraine.
00:58:04.000 And it was the same thing.
00:58:05.000 My grandparents, who grew up in communism, they understand sort of the incredible blessings we had here as Americans. 0.99
00:58:11.000 And my mother was also that sort of old school Eastern European disciplinarian where when I needed it, she too whipped my ass. 0.99
00:58:20.000 And I think. 1.00
00:58:20.000 You know, maybe a few more kids in this country probably need a little bit more ass whooping than participation medals and trophies. 1.00
00:58:30.000 How can you say that these poor kids, there's, they, oh, don't, we can't touch these kids. 0.56
00:58:36.000 I mean, I can't tell you, my dad was a Marine, like I said, and he came, I didn't know, I didn't really know my dad until I was about five years old, because he was in the Marines.
00:58:49.000 When he came home, I don't know if you've ever seen that dress belt the Marines wear, that big leather thick. 0.98
00:58:57.000 I got acquainted with that real well because that thing found my ass constantly. 0.98
00:59:02.000 Well, my mom's weapon of choice was the wooden spoon. 0.99
00:59:05.000 Yep, but yes, it's definitely similar.
00:59:09.000 My grandparents had a little bit of that mentality too, so I got it.
00:59:13.000 And honestly, I needed it.
00:59:16.000 I've needed it, but by any other standard today, that would not be acceptable.
00:59:20.000 There is no kind of discipline.
00:59:22.000 Everyone wins, everyone participates.
00:59:25.000 Coach, this is maybe something where you can talk about.
00:59:27.000 I mean, you know, sort of this participation medal everyone wins, no one has to do anything, they just show up and everyone's a winner.
00:59:35.000 I mean, do you think that would have flown when you were coaching football or when you were playing football? 0.99
00:59:42.000 Bullshit. 1.00
00:59:44.000 That's what I say. 1.00
00:59:45.000 That doesn't fly.
00:59:47.000 You play the game and you work as hard as you can at it.
00:59:50.000 You play it as hard as you can and you hope that you're good enough to be on the team, a part of the team.
00:59:56.000 That's all it was.
00:59:57.000 That's all it was for me.
00:59:58.000 I mean, I was a little guy when I was in, until I got to junior high, and I was still a little guy in junior high. 0.99
01:00:06.000 I got my butt kicked. 0.81
01:00:07.000 I got a little bigger my sophomore year in high school. 0.99
01:00:11.000 And my junior year, I started on the state championship football team.
01:00:16.000 Not because I was a great player, because I had a coach who believed in me, and he spent time with me.
01:00:22.000 I can tell you, I can go back to when I was a junior in high school.
01:00:28.000 We went to camp.
01:00:29.000 We trained at one of those camps.
01:00:35.000 And he would keep me after practice.
01:00:38.000 And not because he wanted to hurt me, he wanted to teach me how to block, how to do the things you had to do to be a good football player.
01:00:46.000 And I learned.
01:00:46.000 And I'm glad he did.
01:00:47.000 I'm glad he took the time.
01:00:49.000 The old Dutchman was one hell of a guy.
01:00:51.000 I had a great high school coach.
01:00:53.000 Well, I mean, that's important.
01:00:54.000 I mean, mentorship is one of those things that's just so important.
01:00:57.000 You sometimes need that person.
01:00:59.000 To take you under their wing, show you what's right.
01:01:02.000 But again, it doesn't just magically appear.
01:01:04.000 I mean, you put in the time and you put in the work.
01:01:06.000 Let's talk about that.
01:01:08.000 Obviously, you reshaped the game when you came in there and played and started playing in 1961.
01:01:13.000 You then certainly did it as a coach where you were just known for being tough and strong.
01:01:18.000 What do you see in the differences today in, say, the NFL with some of the players, with the attitude towards those players in coaching?
01:01:28.000 What are some of the differences that you see today?
01:01:31.000 Well, I had an opportunity.
01:01:33.000 You've got to understand.
01:01:34.000 I was the first, I was the sixth player picked my year in 1961.
01:01:39.000 I was the sixth player picked in the draft.
01:01:41.000 I was the Bears first draft pick.
01:01:44.000 My first contract was $12,000.
01:01:47.000 I had a $6,000 signing bonus.
01:01:50.000 Wait, wait, wait.
01:01:51.000 $12,000.
01:01:52.000 $12,000, and I made $18,000 that first year.
01:01:55.000 So the next year, I made all pro, and I came back in to get a signed contract with Mr. Hallis.
01:02:01.000 And he said, We're going to pay you 14 this year.
01:02:03.000 I said, Coach, you can't do that.
01:02:05.000 He said, Well, I sure can.
01:02:06.000 He said, No, I said, You paid me 16 last year.
01:02:09.000 I said, I'd be damned about playing for a penny less than 16.
01:02:12.000 As soon as I said it, he opened the drawer, pulled it over, contract for 18.
01:02:16.000 I signed it.
01:02:16.000 I never got a raise.
01:02:18.000 I never got a raise.
01:02:19.000 I made All Pro, I made Rookie of the Year, but I never got a raise.
01:02:22.000 But you know what?
01:02:23.000 It was okay because I was playing for George Allis, I was playing for the Chicago Bears, and it was fun.
01:02:30.000 Well, that's great.
01:02:31.000 I mean, I sort of love that attitude.
01:02:33.000 I mean, You know, obviously, with playing for Da Bears, you know, with Mike Ditka.
01:02:37.000 I mean, it's just so cool to hear about it.
01:02:39.000 But I mean, when I contrast that, when you're talking about playing and being, you know, all pro for $16,000 a year or $18,000 a year, when I contrast that to some of the contracts where I hear, you know, of this systemic oppression of NFL players that are signing, you know, deals for $18, $20, $50 million, I mean, what's that like for you looking back and seeing what's going on now in terms of the pay scale?
01:03:07.000 And I mean, you were grateful to play for 18,000.
01:03:11.000 It seems like so many people in the NFL are ungrateful and feel oppressed playing for 18 million.
01:03:18.000 Well, that's a shame.
01:03:20.000 It really is.
01:03:20.000 But I wasn't underpaid.
01:03:23.000 I made a good salary.
01:03:25.000 I was happy.
01:03:27.000 I got to compete in the league against the best football players in the world, I think.
01:03:32.000 That era I came through in the 60s, some pretty darn good football players.
01:03:36.000 So it was a lot of fun.
01:03:38.000 And then, you know, Halos was tough.
01:03:41.000 There's no question about it, but he was fair.
01:03:44.000 And if you're going to be tough, you've got to be fair.
01:03:47.000 He was fair.
01:03:48.000 And looking back, I wouldn't have changed anything.
01:03:53.000 I wouldn't have said, well, I should make it a few more thousand.
01:03:56.000 No, it doesn't matter.
01:03:58.000 It all works out.
01:03:59.000 It all works out.
