00:00:00.0003.44 million tons of waste is what Ontario sends to the US 20% of our landfill waste is shipped
00:00:14.220south and we're about to hit a 50% tariff that's enough numbers for me I'm not the numbers guy
00:00:21.180Paul Micucci is today's show I promise you is garbage from beginning to end well look at this
00:00:27.420we've got a landfill situation that it seems nobody had an eye on no a lot and how did we
00:00:33.640miss that quite frankly as we start this tariff war Mike no one says well maybe we should look
00:00:41.000at the items we're dealing with the U.S. with or for and make sure we have a contingency plan
00:00:47.380oops we forgot garbage yeah so you know and it the number is a little bigger to tell you the
00:00:53.700truth so the numbers a little bigger all told all the states in the u.s were roughly from what we
00:00:59.120can tell looking at different reports around 27 27 of our garbage gets exported to the u.s
00:01:05.820um between new york and michigan so all of a sudden mike rogers so i don't know if you're
00:01:12.300following the midterms in the u.s it's heated up there right now october 23rd mike rogers gets on
00:01:17.960and i'm going to throw it up right now because you got to watch this video this is this tells
00:01:21.520it all. Let's have a look. Big news, Michigan. Canada has been sending trash trucks across those
00:01:27.860bridges into our neighborhoods and into our landfills for decades. It has been a huge problem.
00:01:34.060They fill up our streets. They clog up our streets. This has been a major issue for Michigan
00:01:39.820residents. Guess what? I called the secretary's office a few days ago and said, listen, we need
00:01:44.960some relief on Canadian tariffs, but if you're going to tariff anything, tariff those trash0.93
00:01:48.920trash trucks. Well, guess what? They announced today, the Trump administration, President Trump
00:01:53.600agreed, they're tariffing those trash trucks. Huge progress for us trying to keep those trucks out
00:01:59.680of Michigan. Guess what? Man, this is huge. Second largest landmass country in the world
00:02:05.320ought to be able to handle its own trash. As I've said, if it's good for Michigan, I'm for it. It's
00:02:10.500bad for Michigan. I'm against it. Come on, Michigan. We have a state to save. So he gets
00:02:15.560on and you just saw the video wow yeah so hey canada you're a big land mass you can deal with0.67
00:02:22.120your own landfills the sex the second largest land mass in the world should be able to deal
00:02:27.000with its own landfill situation but here's the thing mike that drives me absolutely crazy the
00:02:31.880mainstream news so as we're going through this you know we get this news that quite frankly
00:02:37.160tariffs they've just taken during the election tear us off it looks like trump is is softening
00:02:43.640softening on tariffs on canada i heard that right 22 product line items were removed
00:02:49.960plywood some paper products uh farm machinery refrigeration equipment but 100 were added
00:02:57.720i didn't know that until i started prepping for the show he took 20 off and added 100 and and waste
00:03:03.720got included in that now because mike rogers sent a note or called up the secretary and said hey
00:03:10.360so what about these trucks don't forget to tax them so we're watching mainstream news the tv
00:03:15.240we're watching we're watching our local news all of us and they're saying you know the the americans
00:03:20.840are starting during the midterms to feel then we're thinking okay great you know they're going
00:03:24.520to take some tariffs off they add 100 and on top of that at 1201 on october 30th the canadian
00:03:32.760municipal waste sewage sludge and clinical waste entering the u.s carry a 50 duty
00:03:41.320he went ahead of the january 1st deadline for steel and auto parts yeah so he accelerated it
00:03:48.520so he took 22 off and he added another uh 100 and he actually fell right to the front of the line
00:03:54.920and put landfill to the front of the line which hurts us the most yeah i don't but we're getting
00:04:00.360along great and we're having these great discussions well then i don't know this doesn't
00:04:05.240you know if if if i take uh you know something from you in the middle of a negotiation it doesn't
00:04:10.280look like we're doing very well right well you know to your point before we started the show we
00:04:14.760had a little chuckle because we're like we don't anticipate any of these tariffs when we when we
00:04:20.440piss off the us like we don't no we don't like provinces don't go around the table and say hey
00:04:25.480is there anything we're at risk yet that we ought to think about so minister on this one is the
00:04:30.120provincial minister so this is todd mccarthy so he's the guy that basically you know now is is
00:04:36.040come back and said hey we got to do landfills so we have to actually put land fills and incinerators
00:04:43.560we need more landfills and more incinerators in ontario a very quick favor before we continue
00:04:51.000a large percentage of you who watch or listen to tpl media every week aren't subscribed yet
00:04:57.320our simple commitment to you is that if you find value there if these discussions make you think
00:05:04.040if you want our uncensored debates deeper dives and extended sit downs head over to tplmedia.ca
00:05:10.600and subscribe there directly it takes just five seconds costs nothing keeps you informed so thank
00:05:17.720you now back to the show and okay so now a plan comes into place that basically is not knee-jerk
00:05:26.040but it kind of is i mean at some point and and actually to mike rogers point we are the second
00:05:32.360largest land mass in the world right well but there's a way to do this we should be doing it
00:05:39.480and maybe doing it for the u.s instead of the other way around but remember so okay back saying
00:05:46.360going to back up a little for a little older canadians so they are younger canadians so they
00:05:51.640can under you know get the history on this one so in the 80s and 90s coming into the 2000s there was
00:05:59.320a lot of controversy about where landfills went you remember this like you did not there'd be uh
00:06:04.920protests there's signs on people's signs on people's yards people were voted out over landfills
00:06:11.080so over time you know the the surcharge for the americans over in places like detroit now
00:06:19.160so when i say that most of our most of our waste goes to the us so when it goes to michigan it
00:06:24.760usually goes to wayne county okay so wayne county is where detroit is so just outside of detroit
00:06:33.000on the other side yeah just outside of detroit it goes to landfills there's a couple really big
00:06:37.960landfills that are there that i know of i think they're the major ones the ann arbor hills one
00:06:42.440and there's one other one oh ann arbor is one of the major sites yes okay so these huge landfills
00:06:48.120you know they take most of course michigan being a big state it has a lot of garbage quite frankly
00:06:53.640it goes but we not only ship so this is interesting the 50 uh surcharge is on municipal waste which
00:07:02.040that's our municipal waste being you know our garbage that comes from our homes our recycling
00:07:07.640all those things uh our business waste all those things but then they also include sewage sludge
00:07:15.400okay so and sewage sludge and clinical waste so sewage sludge um and you know i'll throw up a
00:07:21.800diagram up on on top and i don't want to get into the you know tech uh the technical background of
00:07:27.720wastewater but quite frankly um it is the byproduct of what comes out of our wastewater so as as our
00:07:35.320you know as you know for our bathroom waste and our uh water waste and our shower waste all those
00:07:41.960things go in human hazardous waste yeah human hazardous it goes in it gets uh it gets treated
00:07:48.120at our treatment plants it goes through the treatment plants the sludge that comes out of it
00:07:52.680actually goes and gets some of it gets actually uh solidified so it goes into bio waste quite frankly
00:07:59.480and then but some of it is actually sludge and so that sludge gets shipped places it should
00:08:05.060and incinerated and so that's why quite frankly it's interesting because the minister is talking
00:08:11.740about building more incinerators um and that's a tough one now that's a tougher one because you
00:08:18.860know the u.s has about 140 incinerators we only have a few incinerators right but that's a tougher
00:08:24.260one because that has a lot of pollution smoke doesn't really still have that that incinerator
00:08:30.100process you know you and i just drove across the country i i can think of about 700 miles
00:08:38.020of space where this wouldn't impact anybody and actually would still be within re's reach of you
00:08:44.820know municipalities well that's that's mike roger's point right we're a big landmass we should be able
00:08:50.100defined but the issue is shipping so it's shipping it's not only uh where we take our waste it's it's
00:08:57.460the shipping distance so right especially with the the cost of diesel right now it's more expensive
00:09:02.580to move our waste even to the us which is uh i think it's 36 cents a ton so it's a fairly
00:09:09.220small charge compared to canada for those of you you know who are metric babies you know 2 000 pounds
00:09:14.500to a ton so a ton isn't that much quite frankly so you can see when you say 3.5 million tons of waste
00:09:22.660um you know they're shipping each of the trucks are taking you know a few tons down to the u.s
00:09:29.620dumping and then back they come that's how it works so it is a lot of money to get to haul
00:09:35.540waste into the u.s even though you're only paying 36 cents a ton and of course their complaint is
00:09:41.460not just the waste processing which is you know probably beneficial to them financially but
00:09:47.140it's the truck log that uh you know just bogging down these towns where people need access it's
00:09:54.340become a major issue for for michigan by the sounds of it yeah well you know the cross but then
00:10:00.820but then so oh i'm going to back up for a minute because the incentive i don't want to lose the
00:10:05.620incineration discussion so you know they do have a process now where they have uh basically they take
00:10:14.420the waste and they create energy and they do it through steam turbines so basically and i'll throw
00:10:20.260it up on the screen for you but they create heat and electricity by actually burning it and then
00:10:25.860taking the steam from the actually the incineration of the garbage and then uh putting it through
00:10:32.500boilers purifying it and then they get ash of course and the ash is the thing that's dangerous
00:10:37.620they they can now control the ash and the ash goes down and then it needs to go to the landfills so
00:10:44.260that becomes solid waste and the ash becomes i would imagine a compacted solid waste yeah are
00:10:49.700we doing this already in canada do you know yeah we're doing it uh we're doing it a few places
00:10:54.500we're doing the one i know is in clarington i think where the minister is from yeah uh so i
00:10:59.380know there's a big plant there they do this uh waste energy but it's not a major uh mike i don't
00:11:04.740want to i don't want to get anyone sort of all excited that we can turn all our waste into
00:11:09.380energy um it's it's how do i say it it's a process is it the most economical process
00:11:16.580no it's a process you do because you have garbage right yeah so it's you know but it is you know
00:11:21.220waste is a it's part of life yeah it's something that we have to solve right yeah uh well i don't
00:11:27.460think we have a solution at the moment on that on the shipping front you know but you raise a
00:11:32.100good point it has to be truckable right yeah oh yeah so where do we put it the problem in canada
00:11:38.020and certainly in ontario is that we're so congested near the border that and you would have to
00:11:43.940probably drive two and a half three hours in any direction maybe four hours in any direction to
00:11:50.580ship garbage to a place in ontario where it wasn't going to cause complete havoc right but but now
00:11:56.820with the price of fuel and diesel and everything going up can you afford to so now this is
00:12:02.580interesting so you know um and the conundrum is a timeline so the issue is because it takes
00:12:10.500and this is where you know the government the ontario government is is struggling with the
00:12:14.420decision so again i talked about the fact that the you know the history of landfills no one
00:12:19.940wanted them for years and there used to be protests it was politically insensitive think
00:12:24.820about it you're you're living in a town and i i call this the the it's like the lottery i call it
00:12:31.300the the waste lottery because quite frank you're living in a town your grandparents have left you
00:12:38.420300 acres of land you're selling off the land every year to pay the property tax on the land
00:12:45.460because the land's farmland or it's not being used for farmland so you're trying to you're trying to
00:12:49.620stay alive so every year you're selling a little bit to try to keep as much land hoping that some
00:12:54.180development comes the government shows up in your town and they start looking around and they say
00:13:00.420your site's the site oh instantly your investment just dropped to next to nothing because
00:13:07.540well no the guy that they picked the site on is is over wealthy yeah he's the guy everyone else
00:13:13.700in the town loses all their land value right so it's like one of those things it's it's like the
00:13:19.620it's like the small apartment that gets built or the big apartment that's get built on the block
00:13:24.740and everyone groans because they now know that their home investment just went to zero plummeted
00:13:30.180yeah yeah so quite frankly but this is worse this is worse than a quarry this is worse this is the
00:13:35.940landfill right so you don't know no one's going to buy your house or buy your investment because
00:13:40.500they don't know if your groundwater is going to get contaminated true so but you know landfills
00:13:46.660so now i'm going to back up because i don't want to be too hard on landfills because we do need
00:13:50.900them but you know and landfills have actually uh the technology around landfills has is uh
00:13:58.100uh improved immensely over the over the last two decades so whether it's the drainage you know and
00:14:05.540we'll put up a base of the university of calgary did a study on it okay and they did a great job
00:14:12.580and they're you know they're they talk about how now they're highly engineered it's not like years
00:14:16.740ago remember the landfills when we used to go up to the cottage oh yeah they just basically over
00:14:21.300there in that section which we're going to bury pretty soon yeah is where you throw your your
00:14:27.300waste garbage over here you can throw your metal stuff and in that bin it was pretty basic they
00:14:32.980were like rock quarries that used to get turned into landfills and quite frankly the challenge
00:14:37.780being is they over time you know the the groundwater was being contaminated and caused issues there's
00:14:44.340not that many people living there so quite frankly no one really talked about it right there's
00:14:48.980cottagers you know some lakes you know there were lakes we heard about that actually uh went bad
00:14:55.780you know and people who had bought their cottages lost their investment i remember that but that was
00:15:00.020actually even back in the day that was few and far between those were the horror stories of the
00:15:03.700horror stories yeah that's what you did here but they were not that advanced you're right they were
00:15:07.460pretty basic they were pretty basic but now you know there's uh basically they have a drainage
00:15:12.260layer um they do a gravel uh uh collection pit on the bottom they put uh uh layer of
00:15:22.500i call it a membrane now i call it a pool membrane but it's not it's not a pool cover but
00:15:27.780but they actually do a plastic membrane in that's impermeable they do a bunch of stuff and then over
00:15:33.140time uh they pack it pack it and the leachate systems collection systems that they have now
00:15:40.060are amazing so they they do a great job on it and as they crush it down they actually put pipes into
00:15:45.660it and they run the methane you're making a joke about golf courses that are based on landfills
00:15:50.380or build on landfills yeah have the big methane pipes that are shooting out of the ground
00:15:54.540um well they actually collect them and i know they're now starting to do stuff with
00:15:59.040the methane that are they're pulling out of the pits that is true i've seen that in the west coast
00:16:03.900yes there's there's a processing methane processing facilities yeah yeah so over time
00:16:09.540the technology is getting better but it's still the same issue you know the same issue and it's
00:16:14.920interesting because as soon as bill c 140 came about the minister and and we'll throw it up here
00:16:21.240right away he had to make comment the press was right on okay dissect this for me all right there
00:16:27.460There is never going to be the imposition of a landfill on any municipality that doesn't want it.
00:16:34.560Municipalities will hold the pen on whether or not they want a landfill site.
00:16:38.520But there are benefits, obviously, economic benefits, to having a landfill site, an expansion to a landfill, or an energy for waste site in a community.
00:16:48.520But that will be up to municipalities inside, and proponents will come forward with proposals.
