00:00:18.960 Today, we're going to tell Canadians how, as a couple, we figured out to get the benefits out of fasting.
00:00:25.280 we changed our lifestyle lost the weight and now we want to share it with you so stay tuned watch
00:00:32.160 tplmedia.ca
00:00:34.120 so fasting yeah yeah yeah our north star our compass i'm glad so today you know we were we
00:00:44.980 were doing show prep this week and it came up and it's a topic that people are googling oh yeah and
00:00:51.520 we've seen it time and time again and we wanted to do this show for a while just so the viewers
00:00:57.240 kind of understand we've looked at this show because it's very personal to us because we're
00:01:02.660 living it day by day um because we've changed our lifestyle to include fasting right so i want to
00:01:10.500 kind of before we kick off and talk about the benefits of fasting types of fasting all that
00:01:15.920 good stuff i really want to tell the people what we're doing so you know just to disclose to them
00:01:22.640 sort of what's worked for us and again i put a condition on this show i always put a disclaimer
00:01:27.680 it worked for us quite frankly we tested our blood we talked to a few doctors uh we did some private
00:01:35.760 medical exams that actually gave us sort of update on our condition at the time so we did a little
00:01:42.960 we we did a lot of research quite frankly um and we we came to the conclusion because uh
00:01:48.480 primarily because of me yeah and i was getting older i was struggling i've always struggled with
00:01:52.660 weight uh and i you know i attribute that i you know i shouldn't but i i blame my mother for being
00:01:58.400 a great cook um you know and and that italian lifestyle which is high in carbs uh and i was
00:02:05.480 concerned you know i i had grown up in a an era where i had basically gained 20 pounds every
00:02:12.360 winter and lost it every summer so my weight kind of went up and down but it balanced out every year
00:02:17.880 but as i got older my weight kept going up but it wasn't coming down anymore and then it was going
00:02:23.000 higher during the winter and down and uh i'm not a small guy so quite frankly i was carrying it um
00:02:30.040 but then i started to show it and i was like okay i don't like this that much and then i tried to
00:02:35.000 find solutions i struggle with it but you know tell tell the folks kind of a little bit about
00:02:41.400 our daily routine and then we can talk about a little bit why yeah our daily routine is quite
00:02:48.040 different than regular people uh we get up in the morning we we take a warm water with salt in it
00:02:57.080 and then we start with a mold-free coffee here is in this fast mold is very important not to
00:03:03.320 put inside your body so you have to have more free coffee now mold-free coffee so we you know
00:03:08.840 let's talk about that for a minute for those of you you know who just drinking coffee i don't know
00:03:13.720 if i'd ever paid any attention to this before not before no so and i had been like to colombia i had
00:03:20.200 seen been into the coffee fields of colombia a long time after the white papers uh i thought okay
00:03:27.240 mold when i saw coffee and i saw it in the barrels you know in colombia it was all moldy but i never
00:03:33.880 paid attention to it so mold free very important it is important and with the mold free coffee we put
00:03:40.440 ghee which is clarified butter one teaspoon of ghee and on top of that we add mct oil which is
00:03:47.240 also one teaspoon right and recently we added collagen powder to tighten our skin which is
00:03:53.640 working yes and uh after that i just started to use a little bit of creatine powder in our coffee
00:04:01.400 right creatine right the the forbidden word for a number of years it's back right we can
00:04:07.080 do another show on that because i think uh the research on creatine uh is tremendous right now
00:04:13.080 yeah it was always something that you know you went to the doctor and everyone would say well
00:04:16.920 you know my creatine level is too high so everyone would cut creatine out of their diet they take it
00:04:21.960 over their pre-workouts but now it's back and so we use it in the morning um and now okay so now
00:04:28.120 before we get into it uh the rationale and then we'll get into some of the fasting benefits but
00:04:35.240 so you know we saw this through the biohacking world right so we kind of got into this because
00:04:40.280 biohacking um and most people start their day off and what they do is they have a breakfast they have
00:04:45.800 a breakfast which has sugary cereals or they have croissants or they have god forbid a donut yeah
00:04:53.400 they have uh bread with butter then they have eggs bacon they have starchy potatoes
00:05:01.560 all the things quite frankly they get your body chasing sugar not chasing fat so
00:05:10.280 now the the biohacking world you know this is kind of being talked about quite a bit is by putting
00:05:17.080 oils into your body or fats into your body the ghee right and ghee actually comes from it's a
00:05:22.200 it's a it's a grass-fed you have to be have a grass-fed uh butter to make that key yeah
00:05:29.400 yeah and ghee so the idea of putting ghee into coffee is something that uh where you're from
00:05:34.360 in nepal and tibetan countries um they do a lot of that in the morning right oh yeah they do yeah
00:05:40.360 that's already a tradition they have is they start the day off they they get their coffee um and very
00:05:47.080 pure coffee they put the ghee in it and they mix it up it gives it a a little more substance right
00:05:53.000 yeah if you go to like mount average and on the base camp they usually use yak butter
00:05:59.560 right and then inside your coffee and it one of the reasons is it actually is a filler so because
00:06:05.720 your body has now oils and fats in it yeah your body's not feeling hungry right so you slept all
00:06:12.280 night your body's going into a natural fasting mode so say you know you get set five to eight
00:06:18.540 hours of sleep um you know by the time you get to breakfast you're probably nine ten hours in
00:06:23.980 eight to ten sorry and then quite frankly you put that fat in your system along with the caffeine
00:06:30.800 it does knock down the hunger yeah right so okay i got you so let's jump into sugar and insulin
00:06:39.360 yeah so explain our journey we we explain the journey like how it like every day in our life
00:06:47.560 yeah that's our journey day-to-day life so can you explain what is glucose and insulin sure yeah
00:06:55.340 no problem so you know your your body chases sugar with insulin right and unfortunately
00:07:02.680 the body sees the glucose as a toxic even though it uses it for energy the body doesn't see it
00:07:13.060 positively so the body tries to convert it as fast as it can and it starts creating the insulin
00:07:19.400 and the reason it doesn't see it it sees it as a toxic because the glucose glycates in all the
00:07:25.780 blood vessels and walls and the components uh of your of your hemoglobin and your blood and the
00:07:33.380 glycation means that it actually attaches to the molecules of your blood which is not a great thing
00:07:40.320 right so because then as you're as you get a higher amount of glucose in your blood the chemicals in
00:07:45.800 your blood won't work and they won't work for a number of reasons they won't work because
00:07:50.800 the chemicals that are going in the sugar that's going in the glycation that's happening
00:07:55.780 is causing your enzymes your hormones all not to work well and you know you look at it's
00:08:03.360 interesting and I you know I notice it more and more I'm trying as I get older to kind of combat
00:08:09.940 it we all are but people who have high sugar diets look older and you know I hate I hate to
00:08:18.760 know draw that definition but you don't find too many people that have a buddha belly and have high
00:08:24.840 sugar diets that aren't showing their age aren't showing a themselves older and you know i probably
00:08:31.160 pay attention now because i'm getting older more but you know you see it right you'll meet someone
00:08:35.960 you'll say you know they'll tell you their age and you're thinking wow they look they look quite
00:08:40.280 a bit older and we tend now you know to the you know the the new 50 is 40 and the new 60 is 50.
00:08:49.720 well i don't know if that's working because the chemicals that we're putting into our bodies
00:08:53.800 right now are actually aging us prematurely and you can start to see it so you know we've been on
00:08:59.960 this what how long now since january yeah we've been on january i'm feeling better yeah i'm feeling
00:09:07.960 uh reversal you know a little bit of reversal of aging which thank goodness um and how much weight
00:09:14.200 so give the folks a little bit about how much weight uh we've lost i lost 20 pounds yeah and
00:09:20.760 i'm roughly 29 yeah right now i bounce back and forth you know we were just on the east coast
00:09:25.560 trip so i gained five pounds but hopefully i'll get that off because you know i i was enjoying a
00:09:30.680 little few things that i shouldn't have been um but i'll hopefully get that back off yeah for me
00:09:35.800 losing 20 pounds is uh oh a miracle yeah yeah because i was in burnstein diet before i couldn't
00:09:42.760 even lose five pounds yeah yeah well i've you know you know that so i've i've been on a number of
00:09:48.120 diets right since you and i met each other i've been on a myriad of diets some successful some not
00:09:54.200 um that diet worked for me right that diet actually with the b12 it actually worked really
00:09:59.560 well for me um one of the challenges i had with that diet though quite frankly is it worked quickly
00:10:05.400 and then stopped so i dropped like 20 pounds um and then quite frankly i'd have a hard time
00:10:11.960 time maintaining it but it also left a really a significant amount of loose skin which is not an
00:10:18.600 attractive thing right so as you lost quite frankly your skin was becoming saggy um whereas
00:10:24.280 when we talk about fasting which we're going to talk about in a minute that doesn't occur which
00:10:27.880 is a huge benefit because you tighten you tighten as you fast yeah so now your body's trying to get
00:10:34.680 rid of the glucose out of your system right it sends a message to your pancreas and it says hey
00:10:40.200 pancreas give me some insulin right so so how much insulin is your body producing well it you know
00:10:48.200 your body's pouring your insulin into your bloodstream and it pushes the glucose into your
00:10:53.400 muscles your cells your liver um into every part of your body so that's what the pancreas is doing
00:10:59.640 right so it's pushing it along so let's go for an example like say our day right our days of fast
00:11:06.760 you know we're 18 we're doing 18 hours and uh fasting in six hours yeah but the normal person
00:11:13.480 gets up in the morning you know eight nine o'clock they grab some type of breakfast right
00:11:18.840 in that breakfast is carbohydrates glucose it's it's a bunch of uh items in there right
00:11:24.760 um the challenge is whether it's a starch carb or glucose uh sugar it actually starts your pancreas
00:11:31.880 telling your body okay produce insulin right so now you're spiking your insulin you're increasing
00:11:37.000 depending on the amount of sugar you're eating it's actually your body's moderating now that's
00:11:41.320 if your body's working perfectly so now you know you have about four hours for your body after you
00:11:47.960 spike that insulin to chase the glucose out of into your liver and your muscles and everywhere
00:11:53.320 else before that insulin goes back down again if you're a healthy person all right if you're a
00:11:58.920 super healthy person the problem is you know 12 o'clock goes around and you're hungry again
00:12:04.040 right because now you've kind of yo-yo you've you've had sugar in your system you've pushed it
00:12:08.520 out now your body's saying give me more sugar so now okay hey guys you know you make you're
00:12:13.560 sitting in the office you say i want to go for lunch you go for lunch the first thing when you
00:12:17.720 go for lunch you want to order quick you ever see people at lunch they're all like man i need food
00:12:21.880 i'm really hungry yeah of course right because you're looking for oh yeah they are so talking
00:12:27.480 about food uh in our daily life there is there are a lot of processed food right so how much
00:12:33.080 processed foods play into the this equation well so here you know i want to i want to finish this
00:12:39.560 so before we get into processed foods here's some of the challenges right that i think we have to
00:12:44.360 think through and um as we're going for lunch and then we're actually eating more sugar more
00:12:51.880 glucose into our system and starches then we start to actually have more uh insulin entering our
00:12:59.240 system so now we're spiking our interest our pancreas is sending it back we keep doing that
00:13:04.760 throughout the day right we have that snack in the afternoon which is sugary snack so then we spike
00:13:09.800 it again then we spike it at dinner and then before we go to bed we have a little snack again
00:13:14.360 and we spike it again so we might have spiked our insulin five or six times you do that over a decade
00:13:21.000 or two decades or three decades like i did in my life yeah i did it too yeah we all did it right
00:13:26.440 you know when we were feeling a little hungry we had a little sugar that kept us going the problem
00:13:30.840 is at some point your body's made your body is made um and it's adaptable it's a wonderful thing
00:13:38.280 but and when you produce insulin at a certain level your body will say okay now i'm producing
00:13:43.800 insulin at a certain level i'm good to go i'm going to leave it there and then your body will
00:13:49.240 sort of fixate it but it won't produce anymore it'll hit a it'll hit a moderate amount of insulin
00:13:55.720 in your system but then and that's what they call insulin resistance so once you become insulin
00:14:02.520 resistance then you have a bunch of other challenges right yeah then you're on a whole
00:14:06.920 roller coaster of other other challenges so now let's go to processed foods because i think that's
00:14:14.040 uh the next thing that we need to look at go into any grocery store now so it's interesting since i
00:14:20.120 started fasting i go into grocery stores and i really pay attention because our fasting not only
00:14:26.040 has um the morning ritual where we have the coffee but when we get into the after the 18 hours we
00:14:36.040 have to eat uh organic meats and grass-fed meats and uh organic vegetables organic vegetables so
00:14:42.760 we have to be clean as clean as we possibly can you know knowing that it's not a perfect science
00:14:48.520 i don't want anyone to think that they're gonna be able to uh go to any grocery store in canada
00:14:55.640 and get totally organic or uh grass-fed beef perfectly it won't happen quite frankly unless
00:15:03.000 you live on a farm you grow your own food and you can value test it that's probably never going to
00:15:07.880 happen we're not that unrealistic but we try to eat as clean as we can yeah right so and why
00:15:13.480 because those processed foods the challenge is we've we've created our life our grocery stores
00:15:19.640 you know you ever notice um for those of you probably are a little younger you only know
00:15:25.320 super stores but when i was growing up we had very small grocery stores yeah so you know the
00:15:31.880 the the little fruit market on the corner your grocery store was the size of that right because
00:15:38.200 it had milk eggs beef somebody didn't have beef usually went to the butcher it had uh
00:15:45.960 uh and vegetables and it had fruit yeah so you know your little fruit market would only had the
00:15:53.240 other staples and that's really where you shop so you know we used to go into little grocery stores
00:15:59.160 because we didn't have a lot of processed foods now we have all these processed foods and what
00:16:04.200 they're doing and i want to back up with processed foods go watch how processed foods are made
00:16:11.800 it'll disgust you but i know i mentioned on a previous show you know i i had worked as a young
00:16:17.080 man uh at a meatpacking plant um when i was going through at university um when i used to go and see
00:16:23.800 how processed meats were made i was disgusted honestly just disgusted because it was a big
00:16:30.040 liquid vat and then it was solidified and then it was cut you know and you look at all these
00:16:35.080 processed foods there's no fiber whatsoever um they're super stimulating to your pancreas they're
00:16:41.560 made to get your pancreas creating that insulin uh which is destroying your metabolism and then
00:16:47.720 all of a sudden you have what we had right when i i was struggling right i was struggling and
00:16:56.200 my weight was going back up we went to uh some private medical care um we had some testing done
00:17:03.800 and they came out and said i had a fatty liver then we went to a naturopath remember that and
00:17:09.080 the naturopath looked at it and said yeah you have a fatty liver here's some things to do
00:17:13.880 i don't know if it worked or not we took the pills we tried it but then what we realized that our
00:17:18.680 diet had to change right we were kind of doing more research we were looking at the biohacking
00:17:23.480 technology um you know and then we started learning about visceral fat yeah you know visceral belly
00:17:30.280 fat which was you know i had known about it uh intuitively because i had seen my father right
00:17:37.160 my father was a you know a strong yeah muscular guy um he uh worked very hard lifting furniture
00:17:46.440 and beef and everything else so he had you know a lot of muscle on his upper body but as he got
00:17:52.280 older his thin waist he had a very thin waist as a young man actually created this uh very hard
00:17:59.880 buddha belly it was a very it was a very odd shape at the end because his belly like i used to kind
00:18:05.640 of play with him and joke around with him and i'd poke him in the belly his belly was super hard
00:18:11.080 but it was super round right and i'd be like how the heck does this guy's belly and he used to joke
00:18:16.840 he used to suck in his gut and say i have a you know and he used to think he had a muscular belly
00:18:21.640 but he didn't right what he what he had was visceral fat right which we can call it this is 0.95
00:18:28.040 the killer fat yeah oh yeah it's definitely the killer fat and then it is inside your organs
00:18:34.200 yeah and then what an epidemic wrong foods eating too frequently one in eight canadians are diabetic
00:18:44.120 yeah oh yeah so in the u.s it's actually worse than the u.s quite frankly it is because i was
00:18:49.720 a writer i was about to write an article for impulse and reading about researching everything
00:18:55.240 about diabetic and then i was surprised yeah yeah well you know your body so as you're going through
00:19:02.760 it you're you know you're getting all this visceral fat and this visceral fat um unfortunately with
00:19:08.520 the fatty liver starts to form inside of you right and as it's forming your body can't produce enough
00:19:15.320 insulin so to get that sugar down so now all of a sudden you're creating this visceral fat you're
00:19:22.040 becoming insulin resistance you're abusing your body and next thing you know you have heart disease
00:19:27.640 right and my you know my dad it's interesting and not as terrible he lived which is great
00:19:32.920 but he had his lower lower aorta burst right and i always attribute part of that is to the amount
00:19:39.160 of visceral fat he had around his liver his his arteries and all the things that were going on
00:19:44.680 with him yeah they were making the poor guy struggle right so as he was going through it
00:19:49.880 yeah he was struggling away and he was he had challenges so you know those are the things that
00:19:55.480 you see um and you see them across canada yeah and men and women who look pregnant because of 0.84
00:20:02.520 balls in belly fat yeah i call it buddha belly yeah yeah i call it you know i call it i call
00:20:07.960 it canada's buddha belly and you know we we just came i think we just came from the east coast right
00:20:14.360 um and we saw you know people either weather's bad we understand you know it's hard to keep your
00:20:21.480 diet there's a lot of processed foods yeah you know one of the challenges shipping food there
00:20:26.200 you know shipping uh organic food shipping grass-fed foods they're uh healthy now they do
00:20:32.360 have the atlantic ocean so they should be able to get fish you can only eat so much fish but
00:20:37.160 but you know that is one of the challenges that you see when you when you visit there and and 0.99
00:20:41.640 people struggling from that insulin overdose the number of diabetics that you do run across 0.66
00:20:47.400 um and some of it's cultural right and i wish i would i you know it's funny sure i wish i would
00:20:53.080 have known like if i would have known in my 30s what people know today about insulin and sugar
00:21:01.720 and pancreas and fasting and diet all those things i could have adjusted earlier but we didn't
00:21:08.360 culturally culturally it was eat your breakfast in the morning make sure you get a good healthy
00:21:13.880 lunch and you know it's funny uh uh eat a breakfast uh like your breakfast should be a
00:21:19.400 breakfast for a king right you know and uh lunch should be uh uh you know a good lunch and then
00:21:27.480 quite frankly eat a small day we reversed our eating course we were told to reverse our eating
00:21:32.440 course and i did try that diet i did try the diet where you reverse it didn't work for me at all it
00:21:38.520 didn't work it was the worst advice i could have got right yeah for me coming from from the different
00:21:43.160 culture we used to eat rice for breakfast and rice for dinner yeah so that was a lot of carbs
00:21:50.040 inside the body which i didn't know before yeah oh yeah well we wouldn't have right ours was pasta
00:21:55.720 right we were uh you know and that was that was also an economic factor like you know it was to
00:22:01.880 get uh items that quite frankly were cheap easy to make uh less costly um and we were we were
00:22:11.800 taught that we had to eat in uh three to four meals a day and we also they also taught us like
00:22:20.520 you need to have less protein and more rice so we used to see protein very less yeah oh yeah of
00:22:28.280 course right well economically it only sense right if you could fill people up on carbs yeah right
00:22:33.640 they didn't they didn't understand insulin uh pancreas production they didn't understand
00:22:37.880 diabetes which is a shame because my grandmother uh on my dad's side she she was a diet you know
00:22:43.480 uh probably most of them were borderline or diabetic right yeah yeah and you still see it
00:22:49.560 today and i think that's the the replacement of some of the things that we had which were probably
00:22:54.760 just pastas and rice are now highly processed foods with no fiber and and that's why you see it
00:23:01.160 yeah so but you know let's talk about it um fasting so that's why fasting is a way to get
00:23:08.040 it under control right because you know if you look at the um the history of the world right
00:23:13.640 yeah people uh from you know time time before have gone days upon days without eating yeah right you
00:23:23.480 know they hunted right they got up in the morning they had to hunt they had to uh search for food
00:23:28.440 yeah they were had to find fresh food they didn't have refrigeration so they could only eat what
00:23:34.760 they had uh that day and you know make a fire you know cook it eat it they had no storage capability
00:23:43.320 because once it went rotten quite frankly they they knew not to eat it yeah so you know really
00:23:48.520 had a short period of time with which eat that food then go look for more food and then as winter
00:23:53.560 rain elements winds if you think of all the things that if you had to hunt for your own food which
00:23:59.640 would get in the way there would be days that you'd be without food right yeah yeah my growing
00:24:05.560 up is a bit different no freezer no freeze yeah so we have to cook morning morning and afternoon
00:24:12.840 and night we have to cook so there is no keeping food aside for later or tomorrow yeah yeah exactly
00:24:20.360 well you know uh you know ice boxes you know people uh my my parents you know it was the end
00:24:27.160 i guess when i came it was just ending but they used to go get ice and put ice in the fridge right
00:24:32.120 to keep the ice cold so until the ice melted that food stayed you know edible yeah when the ice went
00:24:40.040 they they had to be looking for for new foods right and that's where they got so so you know
00:24:45.960 your body the 12 hour push for your body so that 12 hours your body's used to it right your body
00:24:51.400 knows that it's gonna be looking for food um but you know uh the problem is you get to the end of
00:24:58.440 that that 12 hours and then what do you do right so there that's fasting is the only way to get
00:25:06.040 that insulin under control right well you know and your body is lazy right so uh as it goes
00:25:13.480 after the visceral fat so your body goes after that and that's the worst fat it can go get which
00:25:19.480 is great your body it's interesting once you start fasting you realize your body starts chasing the
00:25:25.480 bad fat yeah which is terrific right it's terrific because now i'm going after this bad fat i'm
00:25:31.960 getting out of the visceral fat on my system but you got to get there right you got to go to the
00:25:36.440 12 hours to get there and the visceral fat is different from like first i call it your belly 0.98
00:25:42.440 fat your buddha belly fat on your belly is different than your butt fat right your butt
00:25:46.680 fat doesn't have that inflammation right the your buddha belly or the visceral fat that comes from
00:25:52.920 the insulin everything else that hard fat that's in around your organs yeah that's basically the
00:25:58.440 fat that actually is toxic and that's the inflammatory molecules that are in in that fat
00:26:04.120 and that's the bad fat right that you cannot get rid of that fat from just for working out
00:26:10.120 no no that's why fasting is so important it is it really is but the problem is the more you don't
00:26:16.120 the more you don't get rid of that fat then you get things like a leaky gut right so that's what
00:26:20.920 was happening to me again right so then i was starting to have issues because quite frankly
00:26:26.360 you're forming fat around all your organs your liver your pancreas your heart uh you're getting
00:26:32.600 uh around your arteries and fat is forming all around them in your heart they're starting to
00:26:38.360 harden right and that's the inflammation that you're getting in your system as you're as you're
00:26:43.320 getting a fatty liver you're getting a leaky gut all those things and the testing that we did so
00:26:48.760 the interesting thing is we went for private testing and we got the biomarkers done and the
00:26:53.800 blood test done and everything else they were coming back to us finally our doctor our regular
00:26:58.840 doctor wasn't getting any of it right they weren't they were coming there you know i would go in and
00:27:03.400 he'd say to me hey you know eat more chicken and vegetables yeah yeah i'm like dude i'm eating a
00:27:08.680 lot of chicken and vegetables i'm eating five times a day oh yeah my weight's not going down
00:27:13.000 i'm in the gym you know but i'm still you know gaining those 20 pounds over over winter
00:27:18.600 he wasn't understanding it was the timing with which i was eating so the fasting is only your
00:27:25.160 option so let's talk about type of fasting to reduce visceral fat you can do 12 12 then after
00:27:32.920 a few weeks you go to 18 6 which we are doing 18 hour fast and six hours eating time if you have
00:27:41.640 diabetic and other health problem you need to find the right doctor who believes in this solution and
00:27:49.160 not just pharmaceuticals yeah well that's you know that's a whole other thing right so
00:27:55.480 you know i hate to say it but you know i bring it up with you all the time yeah
00:27:59.400 you know listen if you walk in i i do the reverse test if you walk in and your doctor's
00:28:04.280 overweight he's got the buddha belly or she's got the buddha belly they're not in good shape
00:28:09.160 you know they're probably not going to give you great advice on fasting right because
00:28:13.240 they're probably not uh we're more people are uh innately selfish yeah let's put it that way
00:28:20.280 so if they actually knew how fasting worked and they knew the solution to health care and to get 0.89
00:28:25.560 rid of the buddha belly and the visceral fat they'd be doing it oh yeah right they're they're
00:28:30.600 but they don't they're not trained in it they don't know it um and they don't understand the 0.88
00:28:35.640 impacts you know they're they've been trained in what they specialize in or they've been trained
00:28:39.960 to be a gp so but they're struggling with the same thing you're struggling and only till uh it only
00:28:46.920 was until we kind of used this on ourselves yeah and we did the testing we did the biomarkers we
00:28:53.160 did the blood tests we actually changed our diet we went to the different coffees we should did we
00:28:59.400 see the results work right so it's it's kind of uh it's like a field test right if that doctor's not
00:29:04.920 doing their own field testing it's not doing their own personal research on themselves they don't
00:29:09.480 know right yeah doctor is supposed to be a role model for many of us so you always tell me when
00:29:16.840 you want to find a doctor try to see your ace oh yeah yeah yeah that's a theory so try to you know
00:29:24.200 theory for everyone paul's theory so when you pick a physician try to pick a physician that
00:29:31.400 most replicates you yeah right so you're the male or female right pick one that's your same
00:29:38.920 sex pick one that's close to your age pick someone that's close to your culture so therefore when
00:29:44.040 they are testing themselves and when they're doing their own field research on themselves
00:29:48.120 you can have a conversation about you too yeah like you know i know for years i had a doctor
00:29:52.760 and quite frankly i used to say to him all the time he's exactly my age he was male you know
00:29:59.240 i used to say to him what test did you do on it to yourself this year right and he'd tell me and
00:30:03.960 i'd say okay give me the same yeah right because of course anything he was learning i'd want to
00:30:08.920 get the same benefits from it's just that's just human nature of course right yeah so okay now
00:30:16.840 i'm working you know and i'm trying i'm not there yet but i'm hoping in the next few months i'm
00:30:21.480 going to get to 24 and 48 hour fast right um because i'm realizing uh how little food we need
00:30:30.280 yeah so you know now i'm kind of getting to the point where i'm like oh wow i don't need this
00:30:36.120 copious amounts of food to keep me going all day i only need this much food to survive and it's
00:30:41.720 very interesting because that was kind of scary to me when i started the beginning five days listen
00:30:46.680 i'm not going to lie to anyone the beginning five days of a fast are painful and painful because
00:30:53.000 what you're doing is you're you're really cleaning that glucose the glucose is getting going out of
00:30:58.280 your system you're craving it you got you're jonesing for sugar right but once you get through
00:31:04.440 that and you stop jonesing for sugar quite frankly you kind of level out and then quite frankly you
00:31:09.800 get into balance where you know your body knows in 18 hours you're going to start getting it yeah
00:31:14.680 um and it starts to listen right now again i always say get medical supervision um you know
00:31:22.600 make sure you get someone who actually believes in fasting so they give you a balanced opinion
00:31:27.800 but you just don't get actually a pharma opinion which you don't want right because i i looked at
00:31:33.480 it too you know we had that discussion we had the discussion also with my doctor at that point
00:31:38.040 um but you know i wanted to see if i could uh naturally figure it out um and you know touch
00:31:45.240 wood so far touch wood so far you know it's working and i hope it i hope it continues but
00:31:51.320 yeah some days we go to 22 hours if you realize fasting oh yeah easily and i don't even know that's
00:31:57.320 why i think uh 24 and 48 for me is a no-brainer and then they said uh after 12 hours is your body
00:32:05.800 start to create stem cells yeah well so ketones so you know well hey i'm gonna back up for a minute
00:32:13.400 you know because i talked about it earlier and i want to bring it up before we leave it leave it
00:32:18.120 the nice part about fasting so i can do it especially for ladies and for men quite frankly
00:32:23.160 which i found when i did other diets is when you do fast and you do lose the weight your skin
00:32:28.120 tightens yeah so i want to really really reinforce that because that's a real nice benefit because
00:32:33.560 you know you always hear those horror stories of people lose a lot of weight and they have to go
00:32:38.360 and they have to get plastic surgery right yeah they have wavy arms or they have i don't have that
00:32:44.520 no no i don't have it either right so and you know your belly's hanging and everything so those
00:32:49.240 things don't have to happen but fasting does tighten as you're as you're losing the visceral
00:32:54.120 fat yeah you're reforming and you can feel it which is nice yeah so so as you mentioned after
00:32:59.960 12 hours you start making ketones right and they come from fat yeah and they move the fat storage
00:33:06.520 out uh but your insulin needs to be down or it'll not work right yeah so and there are free fatty
00:33:13.960 acids are dissolving fats and they go into your bloodstream and into your liver where they are
00:33:21.000 converted into ketones yes that's the ketones we are talking about yes exactly and those ketones
00:33:27.560 are energy source right so they're a great energy source it's not a glucose and so it's as it's
00:33:32.920 dissolving the fat so now so you know to make it easy you know we don't want to make it too
00:33:37.800 complicated basically after that 12 hours your body's starting to eat the fat uh away yeah right
00:33:46.120 and it's dissolving it through your liver and that's all good right it's all good because now
00:33:50.520 you're feeling an energy burst right which you know is as i call them the all-rounder cells
00:33:57.240 you get after 12 hours you start to get stem cells yeah right and those are the reparative cells that
00:34:02.680 starts your body starts to produce and those are the great cells right so ketones are that clean
00:34:08.600 energy right which that clean energy right is a more reactive oxygenate oxygenation right that's
00:34:15.640 happening in your microchondria um and that's assisting your body in actually growing cells
00:34:22.680 so you're you're uh i call it smart cells yeah you're basically creating smarter cells
00:34:28.840 that are happening and restoring brain cells yeah which actually then allow your reflexes to be
00:34:35.320 better um and then then your what i call all-rounder cells they come out and basically which is your
00:34:43.400 stem cells they start to clear the blood vessels and the linings so i you know i don't get into
00:34:50.680 the technical terms as i as i go through it but i look at kind of the ketones and the stem cells
00:34:57.640 one kind of working to make the machine more efficient and better yeah and the other one
00:35:03.560 cleaning the machine so you know as you're doing your retooling but if you're not doing that you
00:35:09.240 know think about it you're not re-cleaning so your microchondria is struggling your energy is
00:35:14.600 struggling because if you're you're not fasting and you keep putting the insulin and you keep
00:35:19.560 putting the sugar you're not getting those regenerative cell restoration processes happening
00:35:25.480 within all of your cells and through your blood and through the blood vessels right so therefore
00:35:31.800 your your your performance is declining yeah right you're not feeling as good you're sluggish you're
00:35:37.480 down you go through this wild every day um after 12 hours i go through a little bit of a
00:35:45.480 an energy surge right and it even causes it even causes uh growth hormone to increase
00:35:52.280 yeah because part of that stem cell regeneration and your brain microchondria energy cells
00:36:01.720 advancing you're now feeling your brain a little bit of a buzz and quite frankly your energy
00:36:08.680 increases yeah um and you're like wow like i don't know where this is coming from like remember i
00:36:14.280 used to get brain fog it will hurt right in the middle it's like sleepy during the meeting right
00:36:21.000 yeah yeah you're not getting that right you know not anymore yeah and you don't have to use caffeine
00:36:25.960 to get there no just one coffee in the morning bulletproof coffee that's all which makes your
00:36:31.320 efficiency increase so it actually helps your efficiency yeah i do a little more caffeine than
00:36:36.280 you and i'm not gonna lie about that i like my caffeine yeah but quite frankly um you know it
00:36:43.240 you can feel the natural benefits of doing now the good thing is you get through that i mentioned a
00:36:48.360 little bit of growth hormone comes in now you're getting a little energy burst so your energy is
00:36:53.320 higher now your weight's down so also because you've lost the weight you're feeling better
00:36:58.120 your cells are restoring all those things are providing the benefits yeah also it
00:37:03.080 it also helps for the infectious infection in your body because you are in fasting mode and
00:37:09.480 your body is creating stem cells yeah yeah now working out let's talk about that from fasting
00:37:17.320 only not the one component to it you have to work out too yeah well here's the thing you know and
00:37:26.040 this is uh i i spent a lot of time in the gym you know that i've always loved to be in the gym i i
00:37:33.000 love gyms um hours my generation you know the arnold schwarzenegger generation quite frankly
00:37:40.200 you know get in that gym spend an hour and a half you know do the weight lifting run 10 miles do
00:37:45.480 all that stuff you don't need to do that as i went through life i used it as a tool mostly for my own
00:37:54.760 mental health to help anxiety and dopamines and things but quite frankly it wasn't body shaping
00:38:01.960 you know it was doing a little bit it was adding some muscle mass it wasn't uh reducing my fat
00:38:07.800 levels it wasn't doing a lot of things that i should have been having you know and i i always
00:38:13.080 did natural i would never took anything you know to enhance my performance so quite frankly uh i
00:38:20.600 found the only benefits i could get from weight loss and weight control had to be through diet
00:38:26.760 yeah right so you know hey get to the gym they you know they tell you basically fasting doesn't
00:38:32.920 alter your gym performance you still have workouts you probably don't need big long workouts anymore
00:38:39.640 we've kind of through biohacking which is another show all together yeah we've gotten into shorter
00:38:44.360 workouts right so 20 minutes yeah 20 minutes half hour you know we do resistance training we do
00:38:50.440 stretching yeah um you know you're a you like that vibrating i love my vibrating plates to start my
00:38:57.560 day yep and then after that workout a little bit stretch the stretch right so all those things help
00:39:03.880 you kind of you know get to that uh form and function but but essential no you know you don't
00:39:11.800 need to be spending hours in the gym and for inflammation purposes spending a lot of time
00:39:16.680 you know either resistance training or running probably not good as you get older too so quite
00:39:21.080 frankly not required but you know just something to think unless you're using it unless you're a
00:39:25.400 triathlete or you're in an endurance sport um but then you know you got a cycle so you know again
00:39:32.280 for another show we have a few people we'd like to get on yeah um you know they're going to talk
00:39:37.240 about it but you know one of the things that uh great athletes or sustainable endurance athletes
00:39:43.480 have learned over the years is you got to cycle your training so if you're you're running marathons
00:39:48.280 you know you got to actually cycle off and then cycle back on because you are inflaming your body
00:39:53.800 constantly um you know i i just wanted you know we all have busy lives right yeah and we we want to
00:40:02.680 basically we want energy we want health we want sustainability we want to keep our diet
00:40:07.480 clean and healthy um the challenge in canada right now so i want to talk about that before we finish
00:40:14.760 we are how do i say it we're light years behind this discussion and it's a shame we are and i
00:40:21.480 don't know why we are quite frankly you know we started looking um when we started the show today
00:40:26.680 we started looking for people to come on the show to talk about fasting and dieting and all that
00:40:32.760 good stuff mostly other countries so the people we talked to were from other countries and we thought
00:40:39.880 you know what uh there was you know we didn't really want to do that and it's not that we don't
00:40:44.600 want to talk to people from other parts of the world because they do teach us things yeah we
00:40:48.280 love talking to people by the way yeah yeah we do but you know we wanted canadians to talk to
00:40:54.120 we wanted to people that had done research here lived in this climate understood our challenges
00:40:59.560 to talk to and we a lot of people weren't talking about it so what we've decided so
00:41:05.320 what we're going to do is we're going to start doing shows right um talking about our experiences
00:41:10.440 things we've learned um and you know please as as we get going uh give us your input uh chime in
00:41:18.680 right because i think as canadians we can only learn uh healthier lifestyles from each other
00:41:25.560 yeah so thanks john i really appreciate it and let's keep doing this yeah
