Summary

In this episode, Adam and Tom discuss a bill that would have prevented states from regulating artificial intelligence (AI) for the next 10 years. They also talk about Florida Gov. Rick DeSantis and his stance on the matter.

Transcript

00:00:00.000 One part of the bill that is causing some challenges for some people, and I'm kind of in agreement with them.
00:00:07.060 U.S. Senate overwhelmingly rejects plans to stop states regulating AI, it's Financial Times.
00:00:13.060 They voted 99 to 1 on Tuesday morning to reject a 10-year ban on states regulating AI models,
00:00:22.380 removing the provisions from President Trump's big, beautiful bill,
00:00:25.080 with Senator Marsha Blackburn stating it was an honor to lead this fight until Congress passes federal legislation like my No Fakes Act and the Kids Online Safety Act.
00:00:36.400 We cannot remove those projections.
00:00:39.220 And this is a proposal backed by lobbies from Amazon, Google, Microsoft, MetaOpenAI, Sam Altman, Trump's AI team, David Sachs, and others,
00:00:47.600 aimed to prevent inconsistent state rules but faced bipartisan opposition over concerns about stifling oversight of AI, social, and economic impacts.
00:00:57.960 Republican Senator Thomas Tillis, the sole dissenter planning to retire, had told the Financial Times the provision was necessary to keep the U.S. the number one country in the world for innovation.
00:01:10.600 Tom, your thoughts on this story here?
00:01:11.840 Well, so you basically, there's a couple things here.
00:01:15.840 If every state, you know, made a different test for the number of miles per gallon of a car,
00:01:23.160 then that sticker on the window when you go to buy a car would be madness.
00:01:27.600 California, you know what I mean?
00:01:28.640 Of course.
00:01:28.900 They all made different standards.
00:01:30.100 So that's the argument the government is making.
00:01:32.600 The argument that people like me are making for the states is, wait a minute, what about when DeSantis said, no, we're not going to do trans stuff in our schools, and we don't want a federal mandate on that.
00:01:45.420 We know our people locally.
00:01:47.380 No, I am not going to close all the beaches.
00:01:50.120 I got people saying that UV is really good for killing bacteria and viruses, so why can't people be at the beaches in Florida during COVID?
00:01:57.580 No, I'm not going to get behind that.
00:01:59.640 That's the tension we have here.
00:02:01.200 What worries me is the proposal was backed by lobbyists.
00:02:05.780 That scares the hell out of me.
00:02:07.240 And then look who's lobbying.
00:02:08.340 Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Meta, OpenAI.
00:02:10.520 So guess what?
00:02:11.720 If all of those are lobbying the Senate, they only need to get 100 people together and get 51 of them to go their way.
00:02:18.360 Make sense?
00:02:18.940 Got it.
00:02:19.400 If it's in the hands of the states, all of those companies have to work with 50 different states, 50 different governors, and they don't want that.
00:02:27.280 And they're claiming, oh, it's going to be like miles per gallon.
00:02:30.780 The sticker on the car would be madness.
00:02:33.200 No, I get what they're saying.
00:02:34.960 And trust me, I get from their perspective because it lowers the speed of growth and innovation.
00:02:41.840 When we were in the Department of Insurance, we didn't just deal with the federal government on getting one license.
00:02:47.320 We had to get a license in 50 states.
00:02:49.660 50 little governments.
00:02:50.260 And we dealt with every single one of the states.
00:02:52.700 And trust me, it was super annoying.
00:02:54.800 So I fully get that part.
00:02:56.040 But for me, if I'm a state, I want to be able to govern and create certain laws with AI that may be different than somebody else's to be able to attract better talent or to say, no, I'm not okay with you doing that.
00:03:07.540 Is this DeSantis' clip talking about the same issue?
00:03:10.040 Yes, this is DeSantis late last month, late June, where he discusses why he was not in favor of the AI provisions in the big, beautiful bill.
00:03:17.760 Go for it.
00:03:18.240 Go for it.
00:03:18.640 Here's DeSantis.
00:03:19.060 It also raises the issue of this whole artificial intelligence.
00:03:24.360 You know, they're talking about in Washington banning states from being able to regulate it at all for the next 10 years.
00:03:31.620 And as governor, I want to be able to provide protections for you working with the legislature if that's warranted.
00:03:37.860 This stuff is progressing so quickly.
00:03:40.960 But you will absolutely get to a point where they can just take you.
00:03:45.520 They can put words in your mouth and do a video, and you're basically saying something that's the opposite of what you actually believe.
00:03:53.140 And they can make you do – they can have you depict you doing awful things.
00:03:56.200 They're already doing that.
00:03:57.040 That's not the world that we want to live in, and so I think that the states need to be able to retain their ability to handle the emerging AI issues.
00:04:07.760 So this is a really significant issue.
00:04:10.540 You can pause it right there.
00:04:11.020 I'm with it because, again, if a state wants to be a little more liberal, guess what they do?
00:04:16.420 They attract the people that want to have their AIs being done there.
00:04:19.580 If somebody wants to be a little bit more aggressive, a little bit more conservative, then you may say, that may not be a place for me.
00:04:24.760 Adam, your thoughts on this?
00:04:26.380 Yeah, just about the AI.
00:04:27.380 Do you remember about a year ago the World Economic Forum had their list of the top 10 most pressing issues that the world is going to be facing?
00:04:34.220 Yes.
00:04:34.640 For the next decade?
00:04:35.420 And do you remember the number one on the list was misinformation and disinformation?
00:04:39.600 Do you recall that?
00:04:41.100 Yes, of course.
00:04:42.160 Yes.
00:04:42.560 Yeah.
00:04:42.840 So this, I think, is the centerpiece of that.
00:04:45.080 I mean, how many videos, I'm seeing AI videos of grandmas and grandpas talking about all sorts of sexual stuff.
00:04:51.860 It's like, what?
00:04:52.700 What just happened here?
00:04:53.720 I saw Trump playing the World Cup and scored the winning goal.
00:04:56.220 Yeah, what were you watching, bro?
00:04:57.860 Hell yeah, it's pretty sexual.
00:04:59.200 I've seen Taylor Swift sitting on Trump's lap.
00:05:01.620 We've seen these deep fakes, this misinformation, this disinformation.
00:05:05.080 We're getting to the point where we're not going to even know what's real and what's not real.
00:05:07.920 They're talking about some of the highest earning women, real women, their AI bots.
00:05:13.540 So this might not be the number one issue right now, but if things turn out to go this way, we're going to circle back in five years and see if this turned out to be true.
00:05:23.360 And by the way, I don't even think that's what it is, though.
00:05:25.020 I don't think they're worried about the deep fakes.
00:05:26.840 I think they're worried about other type of regulation that they go above and beyond.
00:05:31.000 Like, let's just say Palantir is trying to do something.
00:05:34.140 They want to be able to say, as long as the federal government says it's okay, it's okay.
00:05:36.920 And Florida wants to be able to say, no, we're not doing that in our state.
00:05:41.220 We're not going to be doing this in our state.
00:05:42.740 I think it's a little bit more than that.
00:05:44.240 Is this the clip that was extremely disturbing?
00:05:46.720 This was with Peter Thiel sitting down with Ross Duthat, and he's talking about the Antichrist and how the Antichrist could be ushered in through AI because he was warning this guy about it.
00:05:57.620 By the way, Peter Thiel looks kind of odd, but listen to that.
00:06:01.660 Look at how awkward he turns, Pat, once he mentions the Antichrist and him basically being able to usher him in if he's really going there.
00:06:10.560 Play this clip, Robbie.
00:06:11.480 It's going to be in the first place.
00:06:12.980 My very specific question for you, right, is that you're an investor in AI.
00:06:18.720 You're, you know, you're deeply invested in Palantir, in military technology, in technologies of surveillance, in technologies of warfare and so on, right?
00:06:29.260 And it just seems to me that when you tell me a story about the Antichrist coming to power and using the fear of technological change to sort of impose order on the world, I feel like that Antichrist would maybe be using the tools that you were building, right?
00:06:49.840 Like, wouldn't the Antichrist be like, great, you know, we're not going to have any more technological progress, but I really like what Palantir has done so far, right?
00:06:58.460 I mean, isn't that a concern?
00:07:00.360 Wouldn't that be the, you know, the irony of history would be that the man publicly worrying about the Antichrist accidentally hastens his or her arrival?
00:07:10.540 Look, look, look, look, there are all these different scenarios.
00:07:17.980 I obviously don't think that that's what I'm doing.
00:07:20.240 I mean, to be clear, I don't think that's, I don't think that's what you're doing either.
00:07:24.440 I'm just interested in how you get to a world willing to submit to a permanent authoritarian rule.
00:07:32.040 By the way, he makes a very, this is a very important question he's asking right there.
00:07:35.860 Huge.
00:07:36.220 He says, I don't think you're doing it, but how do you prevent from a guy?
00:07:41.020 Go back seven seconds, Rob.
00:07:42.380 Could you go back seven seconds?
00:07:44.000 Keep going, keep going, keep going.
00:07:45.120 Ten seconds.
00:07:46.300 Yeah, play that clip from right there.
00:07:48.140 I don't think you're doing it.
00:07:50.180 Rule.
00:07:50.900 Well, but, but again, there are these different gradations of this we can describe, but is this so preposterous,
00:08:04.320 what I've just told you, as a broad account of the stagnation that the entire world has submitted for 50 years to peace and safetyism.
00:08:15.960 This is a 1 Thessalonians 5.3.
00:08:17.900 The slogan of the Antichrist is peace and safety, and we've submitted.
00:08:23.120 That's correct.
00:08:24.160 He looks.
00:08:24.700 How do we know that's not AI itself?
00:08:27.820 That's actually, Tom, what do you think about what he's saying?
00:08:30.460 Well, he's pointing, Peter Thiel sounds like, and I'm not inside his head, and there was a lot that was going on in that interview,
00:08:37.380 but he's correctly pointing out that verse in 1 Thessalonians that says that the Antichrist will come, I bring peace, I bring safety.
00:08:43.600 And what does everybody want right now?
00:08:44.720 They want peace and safety.
00:08:45.460 Let's do a 16-week countdown.
00:08:47.080 Let's look at the polling.
00:08:47.760 And so we did that, and it was great programming that you chartered on valutainment, and one of the things that we found was state by state.
00:08:55.700 Guess what was number?
00:08:56.940 The closer you got to the southern border, immigration was number one, and that safety-related immigration was number one.
00:09:03.720 Much different in Missouri than it was in Arizona.
00:09:06.140 In Arizona, Republicans and Democrats were worried about it because in Arizona, it was on their front lawns.
00:09:10.920 So what he's talking about is peace and safety-ism has been something that the voter and the citizen has wanted for 50 years or more.
00:09:22.140 Look at how Germany agreed to things at the end of World War II because the Germans that were still alive in villages that weren't even connected, the Nazis, they just wanted it to stop so they could get back.
00:09:31.420 And so they agreed to things, including they didn't really protest and understand what was going on with the split of Germany that was happening, and so they went with peace and safety.
00:09:40.420 So what he's talking about is very accurate.
00:09:42.880 People look for peace and safety, and the Antichrist will come offering peace and safety.
00:09:47.640 Now, I disagree.
00:09:49.060 I do not think AI is going to hasten the arrival of the Antichrist.
00:09:53.280 The sin of man will hasten the arrival of the Antichrist and hasten the return of the real Christ, Jesus Christ.
00:10:01.100 However, along the way, the deception will be great, and I think that's a point he's trying to get to.
00:10:07.280 But the other gentleman was making, I think was a good and fair point, aren't every advanced tool, you know, like if you go look at all of the technological tools, you look at the DVD, you look at video games, you look at things that were going on, you look at the multi-camera angles that were on DVD.
00:10:24.660 Do you know what the first industry always to use all of these entertainment advanced technology is?
00:10:28.680 Government.
00:10:28.960 Porn!
00:10:30.320 Porn!
00:10:31.280 Porn was the first one to use all the advanced stuff on DVD.
00:10:34.260 They say, imagine watching a movie from five different angles.
00:10:36.880 Boom.
00:10:37.360 Porn had it first.
00:10:39.220 Whoa.
00:10:39.860 Sinfulness and things goes first with usually technological advances because fraudsters used it before there's controls, and evil people use it before there's laws and a sheriff.
00:10:52.300 And so, whereas the Antichrist will say, hey, I will clean all this up.
00:10:57.280 I will make it nice for you.
00:10:58.260 He's absolutely correct, and he's speaking from a biblical point of view.
00:11:01.440 I like it.
00:11:02.000 Once a year, we host an event called The Vault Conference.
00:11:05.400 If you're somebody that either runs a business, you're a married couple, husband and wife, life's been kind of flatlining lately, there's not been too much things that are growing in ways, business, personal, financial, and you kind of want to call a timeout and get away and spend four days with 3,000 other couples and nearly 12,000 people in the same room together to strategize the future of your life with your kids.
00:11:31.320 Being intentional about it, I highly, highly recommend you attend The Vault Conference.
00:11:35.920 It's the only conference you can go to where the attendees are comfortable talking about business, are comfortable talking about money, are comfortable talking about politics, are comfortable talking about family values, and no one cares.
00:11:48.000 No one walks on egg shows.
00:11:49.060 You go to some business conference, oh, we can't talk about politics.
00:11:52.200 We talk about everything.
00:11:53.940 If that's appealing to you, do whatever you can to go to The Vault Conference.
00:11:57.140 Here's a video I did with my patient.
00:12:03.040 Here's a doctor sitting down as a therapist, sitting down with his patient, and guess who his patient is?
00:12:08.980 Rob, go ahead and play the clip.
00:12:11.360 Matthew, who's my next patient?
00:12:12.840 It's you, John.
00:12:14.220 Oh, this one's going to be tough.
00:12:15.820 I've got to take the jacket off for this one.
00:12:19.080 Okay, so what's been happening lately?
00:12:21.380 Oh, nothing positive, I'll tell you that, Doc.
00:12:23.840 Just, you know, work is crazy, my marriage is hanging on by a thread, I know we talked about that last time I was here.
00:12:29.520 The kids are freaking screaming and yelling all the time, the business is bleeding cash, I can't breathe, so what do I do?
00:12:36.840 Let me ask you, Coach, when's the last time you and your wife sat down and actually mapped out your next 5, 10, 15 moves, personal life, and your business life?
00:12:45.060 Never.
00:12:45.480 The only thing we've ever mapped out was our Disneyland trip, just, like, which rides to go.
00:12:49.620 That's one day, though, but I'm talking, like, 5, 10, 15, 20 years from now.
00:12:53.300 You guys have never done that?
00:12:54.260 Never.
00:12:54.840 Do you guys read books together?
00:12:56.140 Do you spend a lot of time reading lately or no?
00:12:58.400 I don't know about her, but the last thing I read was the back of a shampoo bottle while I was in the bathroom.
00:13:01.980 Yeah, it's not enough.
00:13:02.740 I know, but you should see the stuff that's in there.
00:13:04.140 These are actually really interesting stuff, but I'm talking, like, life and business.
00:13:07.540 No.
00:13:08.120 Nothing?
00:13:08.560 Nope.
00:13:09.080 Okay.
00:13:09.440 We don't have time.
00:13:10.920 Does this sound familiar to you?
00:13:12.340 Do you listen to anything he said and say, that's a little bit of me?
00:13:14.640 When is the last time you and your wife took a timeout, went away to a business conference to identify your next 5, 10, 15 moves?
00:13:23.360 If you've never done that, we host a conference once a year called The Ball Conference.
00:13:27.780 From September 8th to the 11th.
00:13:30.020 If you just watched this, you laughed a little bit, you giggled, but you said, that's kind of me.
00:13:34.580 Get registered.
00:13:35.260 I look forward to seeing you and your spouse September 8th through the 11th at the Gaylord Orlando.
00:13:39.520 All right.
00:13:41.920 Well done, team.
00:13:43.320 Yes.
00:13:44.040 Guys, go to theballconference.com.
00:13:46.760 Go to theballconference.com.
00:13:48.680 Get registered.
00:13:49.320 Get yourself a ticket.
00:13:50.700 If there's one that I can tell you since 21 years old, I've gone to 4 to 10 business conferences every year purely to recreate myself.
00:13:58.500 Again, go to theballconference.com.
00:14:01.060 Get yourself and your spouse a ticket.
