00:00:00.000 30 seconds, one time for the underdog, ignition sequence start, let me see you put them up, reach the sky, touch the stars up above, cause it's one time for the underdog, one time for the underdog.
00:00:17.260 I'm Patrick Bedevi, your host of Iretainment, and today we're going to talk about the differences between motivation and inspiration.
00:00:23.420 A lot of times we hear the words, he's such a great motivator, you know, I'm inspired, and we don't really know the difference between motivation and inspiration, right?
00:00:34.400 So, you know, we think we're motivated, but we're really inspired, we're inspired, but we're really motivated, so what is the real difference?
00:00:41.340 And when that question was asked for me, one thing came to my mind right off the bat.
00:00:45.160 To me, the biggest difference between motivation and inspiration is lifespan, lifespan of that feeling, of that emotion.
00:00:54.600 Let me explain.
00:00:55.300 So, whatever emotion of excitement or wanting to take action that lasts longer, it's inspiration.
00:01:06.040 Whatever is shorter, it's motivation.
00:01:09.180 For instance, you know, if somebody, if you find yourself saying, I'm good at staying excited for one day or two days or a week or two weeks, but for whatever reason, I can't stay excited for 90 days or a year or five years or 10 years or 20 years.
00:01:23.180 That's because you've only figured out how to motivate yourself.
00:01:27.580 You have not figured out how to inspire yourself.
00:01:32.200 Very, very big difference.
00:01:33.660 Look, to simplify in my understanding, to me, on what motivation is versus inspiration, motivation is a lot of making statements.
00:01:45.640 Inspiration is about asking questions.
00:01:49.360 So, if you want to motivate somebody, you would say things like, you can do it, you're great, you're awesome, this is for you, you're going to go make a difference.
00:01:55.360 You know, that's a lot of motivation.
00:01:57.760 A lot of inspiration is, what do you want to do?
00:02:01.680 You know, where do you want to go?
00:02:03.120 Why are you doing this?
00:02:04.320 So, think about the most popular motivation phrase in the world that we've all used or heard before is what?
00:02:14.160 You can do it, right?
00:02:16.200 Just like from this scene and this movie.
00:02:18.280 You can do it!
00:02:19.340 As funny as Rob Schneider is in Waterboy, you know, you can do it has been used in many different movies, right?
00:02:25.340 But, you know, if I was to think about what question is, a question that makes us think, you know, what is in most common question to ask to inspire somebody is what?
00:02:39.020 What do you want?
00:02:41.580 Just like in this scene, which is the most powerful scene to me in this movie, Notebook, when he asks the question from her.
00:02:51.740 What easy way?
00:02:53.160 There is no easy way.
00:02:54.380 No matter what I do, somebody gets hurt.
00:02:56.480 Would you stop thinking about what everyone wants?
00:02:59.500 Stop thinking about what I want, what he wants, what your parents want.
00:03:03.400 What do you want?
00:03:04.380 What do you want?
00:03:07.100 It's not that simple.
00:03:08.300 What do you want?
00:03:10.700 You know, I love this scene.
00:03:11.980 I love this scene because I've seen it so many times.
00:03:15.840 Noah just doesn't stop.
00:03:17.580 And, you know, you have Ali on one end where her parents, you know, are trying to motivate her and they want her to do what they want her to do.
00:03:26.820 Not what she wants to do.
00:03:29.100 Motivate to marry the right guy.
00:03:31.180 Like, you know, marry the right this and all this kind of stuff.
00:03:35.700 And Noah tried motivating so long and it didn't work.
00:03:40.080 And he just said, look, what do you want?
00:03:43.000 And when you inspire people, it all becomes about them, less about you.
00:03:48.820 You're inspiring them.
00:03:50.180 What do you want?
00:03:51.680 What is it worth you making a decision and giving everything you got in your life to go after one thing?
00:03:58.480 What do you want?
00:03:59.780 Not you can do this, you can do it, you can do this, all this stuff.
00:04:03.560 Because remember, a motivator doesn't necessarily inspire others.
00:04:08.780 But someone who inspires automatically motivates others.
00:04:12.480 Because you're sitting there and a person starts asking questions.
00:04:17.500 You know, what's your purpose of living?
00:04:19.780 Meaning, you know, when you sit there and you think about all the events that happened in your life.
00:04:24.160 On one of my flights, I was coming back and I started writing on this flight, one of the most incredible exercises.
00:04:30.720 I started writing the most difficult things that ever happened in my life that impacted me emotionally.
00:04:36.120 Whether it's my insecurities, my fears, my flaws, my vice, my challenges, my mistakes.
00:04:40.680 And everyone's got it.
00:04:41.620 Everyone's got it.
00:04:42.000 We don't want to talk about this, but everyone's got it, right?
00:04:44.040 And I made a list, very emotional, very emotional flight.
00:04:48.640 I have those notes till today.
00:04:50.400 Events, days I clearly remember that crushed me or hurt me or challenged me or whatever it was.
00:04:57.540 And I started connecting the dots.
00:05:00.260 You know, this happened because of this.
00:05:02.000 That happened because of this.
00:05:03.040 This happened because of this.
00:05:04.400 Maybe there's a bigger picture to the whole thing.
00:05:07.760 Maybe there's a bigger picture to the whole thing.
00:05:10.580 And why did this happen?
00:05:11.800 What about this?
00:05:12.660 What do I want?
00:05:13.780 What motivates you?
00:05:14.880 What fires you up?
00:05:15.700 What gets you going?
00:05:17.600 That's the questions to ask to inspire you to realize the bigger calling in life.
00:05:23.100 You know, I got two books I want to share with you here.
00:05:25.260 One of them is The Accidental Millionaire.
00:05:26.920 You know why I love this book, The Accidental Millionaire?
00:05:28.700 I love Accidental Millionaire because Lee Butcher, who wrote this book, he wrote this book and it did very well during that time
00:05:37.420 because he wrote it right after Steve Jobs got fired.
00:05:41.580 And if you read this book, the reason why I love this book is because he writes the book without the story being finished yet.
00:05:50.840 See?
00:05:51.340 He writes the book, The Rise and Fall of Steve Jobs at Apple Computers.
00:05:56.980 You can tell when you read it, the author doesn't like the character, which is Steve Jobs.
00:06:02.220 But what he doesn't understand, this Lee Butcher guy, what he doesn't understand is Steve Jobs was inspired.
00:06:10.100 And you know what can stop somebody who's inspired and the inspirational level is very high?
00:06:15.340 You know what can stop it?
00:06:16.720 Very few things.
00:06:18.160 Very, very few things.
00:06:19.200 I'm talking, I mean, you know, Armageddon and things like that.
00:06:23.660 Very few.
00:06:24.420 You can't get in the way of a human being who is genuinely and sincerely inspired.
00:06:31.820 You can write whatever you want about that person, criticize them a million different times, spread a million different rumors.
00:06:40.360 You can't stop somebody who's inspired.
00:06:44.300 You cannot stop somebody who's inspired.
00:06:46.860 You cannot.
00:06:47.320 I like this other book called The Answer to History by the Shah of Iran when he wrote this book.
00:06:56.580 He wrote this book right before he passed away.
00:06:58.900 So he's got cancer.
00:06:59.900 He's on his deathbed.
00:07:00.660 He's about to pass away.
00:07:02.620 He writes this book.
00:07:04.040 And one of the reasons why I love this book, a chapter of it, I mean, I can't read this book enough times.
00:07:07.720 It says, you know, a little later in summer, I fell, okay, a little later during summer on my way to Imam Zadeh Daoud,
00:07:15.300 a place of pilgrimage in the mountains, I fell from a horse, my horse, on the rocks and passed out.
00:07:21.100 I was taken for dead, but I had not so much as a scratch.
00:07:25.060 In falling, I had a vision of one of our saints, Abbas, who cradled me as I fell.
00:07:30.340 And he continues, this dream and vision were followed sometime later by an appreciation for Shamiran Royal Palace.
00:07:37.340 And he explains, he continues, and in chapter six, he says this.
00:07:40.920 Under her tutelage, I began dreams unusual for a boy my age.
00:07:45.860 He's talking about his French teacher.
00:07:47.140 We taught him how to speak French and many different things in life.
00:07:49.180 And he says, but then I already knew that I would not lead the life of an ordinary boy.
00:07:57.120 Thus, I dreamed of making my country's peasants happy and having every man judged by the laws, by just laws.
00:08:03.820 These were dreams that never left me, never left me, never inspiration, never left me,
00:08:10.160 in which to a large degree, I managed to realize later in life.
00:08:16.700 He was asking questions about his life.
00:08:19.620 Who am I?
00:08:21.060 Why is my father Rezachan?
00:08:22.980 Why do I have a boy?
00:08:25.140 Why am I in this situation here?
00:08:26.640 Why is Iran going through this mess?
00:08:27.980 Iran used to be one of the most beautiful places in the world.
00:08:29.920 The wealthiest people used to go to Iran for vacation.
00:08:34.300 You know, Frank Sinatra would do concerts there.
00:08:36.280 Elizabeth Taylor would go there and visit, you know, the ambassador, Zahedi,
00:08:40.080 and a lot of things would happen with Iran.
00:08:41.680 I mean, it was one of the top three countries in the world for tourism in the 70s.
00:08:46.200 What happened?
00:08:47.420 He was inspired.
00:08:48.520 A man was inspired.
00:08:50.400 You couldn't stop neither one of them.
00:08:52.240 They both died from cancer in their 50s.
00:08:55.080 They were inspired.
00:08:56.960 They were not motivated.
00:08:58.920 When you're inspired, motivation is automatic.
00:09:01.560 When you're inspired and it's a bigger calling,
00:09:03.320 and the way you know it is how long you stay excited.
00:09:07.400 Like, this is, I am really excited.
00:09:09.420 That means it's real inspiration.
00:09:11.220 Oh, I'm not excited today.
00:09:12.280 You're not inspired.
00:09:13.240 You're just motivated.
00:09:15.500 You know, many years ago, I was thinking about becoming a motivational speaker, okay?
00:09:19.500 So I was looking up to this guy, and I said,
00:09:21.520 I want to become a motivational speaker.
00:09:23.320 And when it came down to it, I had an interview in San Diego.
00:09:25.980 It's 6.30 in the morning.
00:09:26.860 The lady called Cynthia.
00:09:27.960 Hey, we want to hire you.
00:09:28.840 We're going to give you a multi-six-figure year.
00:09:30.380 You're going to do this.
00:09:30.940 You're going to do this.
00:09:31.340 You're going to travel.
00:09:31.800 You're going to get all this stuff.
00:09:33.100 24 years old.
00:09:34.940 And I had such a hard time sleeping that night.
00:09:38.560 I went to sleep, and I called in the morning.
00:09:40.240 I'm not showing up.
00:09:41.360 Why?
00:09:42.800 I don't want to motivate.
00:09:44.500 I want to inspire.
00:09:46.720 I don't want to be a motivational speaker.
00:09:49.540 I want to inspire.
00:09:52.540 And I will never forget that.
00:09:54.280 Completely change the way I view things.
00:09:57.940 Because all night, that night, I was asking questions.
00:10:01.080 And over the years, I've put a list of questions together that I ask about, you know, figuring yourself out.
00:10:07.780 And I won't share all of them with you.
00:10:10.380 But what I'll do is I'll put a list of the questions that I'll share with you.
00:10:13.280 And maybe we can put a link on the bottom to a website where you can go and see some of the questions.
00:10:17.300 And maybe I'll put some of the other questions later on.
00:10:19.200 But I'll make a list of you.
00:10:20.060 You can click on the link bottom description.
00:10:22.060 I'll make sure to ask some of the questions that I've asked myself all my life.
00:10:24.740 But I want her to be inspired.
00:10:29.120 I want her to be inspired.
00:10:30.640 And you know what else is so crazy?
00:10:32.400 You do as well.
00:10:34.060 You also want to be inspired.
00:10:36.660 You also want to go out there and do something special.
00:10:39.620 And the best test to know about motivation versus inspiration is how long do you stay excited?
00:10:48.080 Do you need alarm clocks to wake you up?
00:10:51.000 Inspiration, you don't need alarm clocks.
00:10:52.460 You just flip and wake up in the morning because you're inspired.
00:10:56.620 Because you're connecting the dots and you're realizing life has a bigger meaning to it than just making a million bucks and driving a Ferrari or Porsche or Lamborghini.
00:11:04.860 And there's nothing wrong with having all of that stuff.
00:11:06.860 That's fine.
00:11:08.500 But on your way to fulfilling a prophecy, your prophecy, your crusade, your cause, your vision, that, that's from here.
00:11:16.320 That's from your life experience.
00:11:18.000 That's from the crap that's happened to you.
00:11:19.920 You can't tell me you go to sleep every night thinking you're supposed to be average and ordinary.
00:11:25.340 You can't tell me that.
00:11:26.960 I don't buy that.
00:11:28.000 And I don't think you do either.
00:11:29.700 And I think you need to ask yourself a lot more questions that lead to action, that leads to excitement for a long period of time until your time comes that you pass away and you write a book.
00:11:42.740 And millions of people know about it and you fulfill your prophecy.
00:11:47.640 But it won't happen by just trying to get motivated.
00:11:50.520 And nothing wrong with being motivated.
00:11:52.040 You need a lot of motivation.
00:11:53.120 Believe me, motivation is a great thing.
00:11:54.740 Don't, I'm not telling you, don't use the phrase, you can do it or all this.
00:11:58.420 No, not at all.
00:11:59.080 That's needed.
00:11:59.660 Every day we need motivation.
00:12:00.840 You know, even a Martin Luther King who was inspired, he needed some people to motivate him at times.
00:12:05.720 But he knew his prophecy, his calling was a bigger calling.
00:12:10.160 Look what he did to the world.
00:12:13.500 That's inspiration.
00:12:16.120 If you want the list of questions, click on the link on the bottom.
00:12:19.380 If you got any other questions about the message, your comments, please comment on the bottom.
00:12:23.500 Feel free to ask any questions.
00:12:24.600 We actually do read the questions and get back to you on the questions as well.
00:12:27.220 But my challenge to you is really think about this.
00:12:32.920 When you finish the video, don't go to another video.
00:12:35.020 Just stay on it for a second and think about it.
00:12:36.900 Ask the question, what do you want?
00:12:38.600 What are you here for?
00:12:39.580 What are you supposed to do?
00:12:41.040 You, what are you supposed to do?
00:12:42.680 Not the other guys.
00:12:44.040 Block everybody else.
00:12:45.720 What's the reason why you're supposed to make money?
00:12:48.540 Doesn't mean leave your job.
00:12:49.900 It means use whatever money you're making to fulfill your calling.
00:12:52.760 What is your calling?
00:12:53.700 What is that private time when you're by yourself, upset, frustrated, ticked off.
00:12:57.860 You want to curse out the world, but you really want to curse yourself out because you're so furious with yourself.
00:13:03.020 And typically when you're furious with yourself, you kind of feel like you're not doing.
00:13:06.560 What's yours?
00:13:07.680 What is your calling?
00:13:11.400 What can you do to inspire you to take action?
00:13:15.760 Go ahead and do that exercise privately, late at night with everybody away.
00:13:22.560 You, by yourself, with you.
00:13:25.920 And then whatever business you're in, whatever money you're making, use that money that you're making to fulfill your prophecy, to fulfill your calling.
00:13:35.740 Thanks, everybody, for listening.
