Summary

One of the most frustrating things about the game of golf is that so few of us master it. How do we master it? Why do we struggle so much with it? And why is it that once we figure it out, we actually start enjoying the game?

00:00:00.000 30 seconds, one time for the underdog, ignition sequence start, let me see you put em up, reach
00:00:09.220 the sky, touch the stars up above, cause it's one time for the underdog, one time for the
00:00:16.200 underdog.
00:00:17.660 I'm Patrick Bedeby, your host of Alutainment, and in today's short episode, we will be talking
00:00:21.680 about how to master a skill.
00:00:24.240 Have you ever seen somebody, maybe it could be their golf swing, maybe it could be somebody
00:00:29.980 shooting a basketball, or it could be somebody's baseball swing, or whatever it could be, and
00:00:35.100 they make it seem so easy, and just like so, you know, as if they're not even putting any
00:00:40.420 effort into it.
00:00:41.180 It's an effortless type of thing they're doing.
00:00:43.900 And then you go out there and do it as an amateur, and it looks nothing like what that person did.
00:00:48.020 Now I want you to think about this here.
00:00:50.120 I want you to think about the first time you did anything, whatever it could be.
00:00:56.540 Think creative.
00:00:57.920 Go to the first time you did that thing.
00:00:59.980 Yes, the thing you're thinking about.
00:01:02.060 How embarrassing were you at doing that first time of whatever that thing is?
00:01:06.640 You know what I mean?
00:01:07.000 Do you remember the first time?
00:01:08.020 How bad was it?
00:01:09.420 How embarrassing was it?
00:01:10.840 I mean, I think about the first time I did a lot of things.
00:01:14.760 My goodness, if there was a video of it, I'd be laughing all day long if I could watch
00:01:18.780 how terrible I was in it.
00:01:21.560 And why do so few of us master things?
00:01:24.380 Well, last week, I had the opportunity of spending some time with an instructor, a golf
00:01:30.260 instructor, Michael.
00:01:31.500 And he and I were sitting down and having a conversation together.
00:01:34.980 And he said, you know, the game of golf is very annoying and very frustrating.
00:01:38.500 I said, tell me.
00:01:39.540 Tell me why.
00:01:40.100 He says, well, because it's going an 80 mile an hour swing and you're supposed to hit the
00:01:45.720 small ball and all the small little angles could dictate which direction the ball is going
00:01:50.460 to go.
00:01:50.760 So you could really drive yourself nuts.
00:01:53.560 So I said, when does one really start enjoying the game of golf?
00:01:57.560 I wanted to hear his answer.
00:01:58.760 Listen to what he told me.
00:02:00.760 He said, one learns and enjoys the game of golf when you know why the ball went where it went.
00:02:08.920 I said, elaborate.
00:02:10.740 He said, as an amateur, you get up and you try to hit the ball, you miss the ball, right?
00:02:13.820 And if you make a contact, it goes right or it goes left.
00:02:15.900 It goes all over the place.
00:02:16.980 And how come it went to that place?
00:02:18.240 He says, once you learn why the ball is going to the right and why the ball is going to the
00:02:26.000 left, you get to actually enjoy it because your next swing, you just make a minor adjustment.
00:02:31.520 Maybe it's your shoulders.
00:02:33.160 Maybe it's your back not being straight.
00:02:34.860 Maybe your head's moving more than two or three inches.
00:02:37.400 Maybe your weight is on your heels instead of your toes, 70-30.
00:02:40.700 Maybe you're not 60-40 on your back foot.
00:02:43.240 Maybe the ball's not aligned to right with your left foot if you're hitting a driver.
00:02:46.640 All of these things you think about.
00:02:48.920 He says, but once you figure that out, you actually get a chance to enjoy the game.
00:02:52.760 And I said, you know what?
00:02:53.660 That's exactly what it is to be an entrepreneur and a businessman.
00:02:58.300 You know, you sit there and you wonder, why is this thing not working for me?
00:03:02.060 And you know typically what it is in business?
00:03:04.140 It's one small minor adjustment.
00:03:06.560 You got to make him, boom, you start enjoying the game again.
00:03:10.200 So you don't mind if a certain number is going lower or higher, but you know why that thing's
00:03:15.600 going lower or higher is because of this.
00:03:17.940 This concept is true in many aspects of our lives.
00:03:20.380 You could say my lower back is having problems.
00:03:22.580 I really have a hard time with my lower back.
00:03:24.320 And so you go out and work on your lower back.
00:03:26.360 And you hire a personal trainer and say that has nothing to do with your lower back.
00:03:29.040 Your hamstrings are weak.
00:03:30.060 Your abs are weak.
00:03:31.160 You need to work on your abs and your hamstring.
00:03:32.940 You got to be kidding me.
00:03:34.220 Say my marriage is not working out.
00:03:35.740 It's because of, you know, our finances.
00:03:37.720 Because it is.
00:03:38.180 You go talk to somebody and they say, no, it's because of communication.
00:03:40.960 You know, my finances are not working out.
00:03:42.680 It's because of my income.
00:03:43.380 No, it's because you're spending too much money with the barbecues you do every other
00:03:46.100 week and a beer.
00:03:47.060 You're spending $300 every time.
00:03:48.400 That's $600 right there.
00:03:49.960 But once you figure out why it is that you're having those challenges you're having and you
00:03:55.660 make minor little tweaks here and there, you start really enjoying the game of life.
00:03:59.820 And it just becomes so effortless to you.
00:04:01.600 And you know who could do that?
00:04:02.920 Anybody.
00:04:03.520 You just got to figure out what those tweaks are that you need to make.
00:04:05.880 Thanks, everybody, for listening.
