00:00:00.000 30 seconds, one time for the underdog, ignition sequence start, let me see you put em up, reach
00:00:09.220 the sky, turn the stars up above, cause it's one time for the underdog, one time for the
00:00:16.220 underdog.
00:00:17.300 I'm Patrick Bedevi, your host of Value Team, and today I'm going to talk to you about the
00:00:20.100 50% rule of leadership.
00:00:22.260 What is the rule, what is the 50% rule of leadership?
00:00:24.640 A long time ago, in my life, my father challenged me to subscribe to leadership, because my
00:00:33.680 father wanted to be a leader in everything that he ever touched.
00:00:35.920 Everybody who knows my father, he's a leader, and I wanted to be a leader, is what I wanted
00:00:40.220 to be.
00:00:40.600 I wanted to lead, because in my life, I haven't seen something more rewarding than being considered
00:00:45.820 a leader.
00:00:46.260 Somebody said, well, how about being a parent, having a kid is more rewarding.
00:00:48.780 No, being a parent that leads your kid is rewarding, because you're a leader.
00:00:52.620 That's what's rewarding.
00:00:54.800 Anybody can go make a baby, almost anybody can, but leading that family is what's rewarding.
00:01:00.240 So what is the basic 50% rule of leadership?
00:01:03.640 It's very simple for me.
00:01:04.500 Here's what it is.
00:01:05.580 Almost every one of us wants to be pleasing everybody and have everybody like us, but that's
00:01:09.740 not what leaders can ever do.
00:01:11.020 Anybody can ever do that.
00:01:13.640 If 100% of the world likes you, you're not a leader.
00:01:18.660 You're probably a newborn baby, because it's impossible to have 100% of people like you.
00:01:24.260 But there are a lot of adults that have most people like them, because they're afraid to
00:01:28.440 rub people the wrong way. 1.00
00:01:30.000 If 100% of people don't like you, you're a jerk. 1.00
00:01:34.420 So you're either a person that's wanting to please everybody, or you're simply a jerk. 1.00
00:01:39.300 You're not good with people. 1.00
00:01:40.440 No one likes you.
00:01:41.400 They just tolerate you, right?
00:01:43.220 A leader, whether you're Ayn Rand, who writes a book, Atlas Shrack, 50% Cannot Stand It, 50%
00:01:49.980 Loves It, if you're Chris Matthews, if you're Tip O'Neill, or you're Ronald Reagan, most people
00:01:55.980 don't like you, some people don't like you.
00:01:57.740 If you're Michael Jordan, it doesn't matter who you are, the leader is generally around
00:02:03.000 the 50% number.
00:02:04.820 50% will like you, 50% will not like you, you're a leader.
00:02:09.400 So a Michael Jordan who came to the Bulls, and all of a sudden, one year, they draft Horace
00:02:14.120 Grant and Scottie Pippen, who are coming up as rookies, and this guy wants to win a championship.
00:02:17.520 They're just glad to be in the NBA.
00:02:18.680 They're partying, and he's pushing them. 1.00
00:02:20.940 He's kicking their butt. 1.00
00:02:21.820 They're not liking them. 1.00
00:02:23.060 They're partying together, Horace and Scottie, always talking behind his back.
00:02:26.760 But there was one person who completely understood what this guy was doing, and that was Phil
00:02:31.100 Jackson, because Phil understood the only leader on his team is a guy named Michael Jordan.
00:02:36.060 Phil pushed everybody.
00:02:37.560 So eventually, Scottie figured it out, because he wanted to win a championship, so did Scottie.
00:02:42.880 Scottie subscribed, Phil subscribed, the ownership subscribed, then Horace subscribed.
00:02:47.940 Then they won championships.
00:02:49.760 But still, half of the team, the new players that were coming, Tony Kukoc, you know, Winnington,
00:02:54.540 all these other guys that were coming, they didn't like Jordan, because Jordan drove everybody.
00:02:59.280 By the way, fast forward 20 years later, Steve Kerr, who played with this guy and got into
00:03:03.540 fist fight with him, got a black eye from Michael Jordan.
00:03:06.440 He just won a championship and was coach of the year.
00:03:08.880 If you look at John Paxson, he's a general manager on our team.
00:03:12.140 If you look at Scottie Pippen, Horace Grant, four-time champion.
00:03:14.580 Scottie Pippen, six-time champion.
00:03:15.920 Top 50 players of all time.
00:03:17.080 They were able to respond to leadership being given by Michael Jordan, even though this dude
00:03:24.880 knew most people didn't want to be around him.
00:03:28.100 Half the people didn't want to be around him, because he was too tough on everybody, and
00:03:33.420 he had opinions about people that half the group didn't like.
00:03:38.000 So you'll generally know who the leaders are in any organization, because if in an organization,
00:03:43.560 somebody, make a list of people in any organization, say, this person everybody likes in a company.
00:03:49.100 Believe it or not, that person's not a leader.
00:03:51.540 That person's somebody that wants everybody to be pleased for other reasons.
00:03:55.680 And you say, this person, half the group loves them, half the group doesn't like them.
00:03:59.280 That's the leader of the group, because they challenge everybody to improve.
00:04:03.680 And you need to make a decision yourself whether you want to be a leader, or you want to be 0.99
00:04:07.360 a people pleaser, or you want to be a jerk. 1.00
00:04:09.180 It doesn't matter. 0.99
00:04:09.740 The choice is yours, but leadership, 50% rule, is what you'll be dealing with for the
00:04:15.220 rest of your life.
00:04:15.880 Thanks, everybody, for listening.
