00:00:00.380 30 seconds, one time for the underdog, ignition sequence start, let me see you put em up, reach
00:00:09.220 the sky, turn the stars up above, cause it's one time for the underdog, one time for the
00:00:16.220 underdog.
00:00:17.360 I'm Patrick, better be your host of Value Team and today we're going to talk about your
00:00:20.160 best New Year resolution.
00:00:21.980 You know, you hear a lot of people during this season say things like, influencers will
00:00:25.160 say things like, you know, don't wait till New Year to create a resolution, I don't believe
00:00:28.780 the New Year resolutions, because you ought to have resolutions no matter what the time
00:00:31.500 of the year is, and that is true, I agree with them, but the season is a season where
00:00:35.680 a lot of people are thinking about making New Year resolutions, so what does that mean
00:00:38.400 to you?
00:00:38.720 Well, I'm at the house right now relaxing with the family, we just came back from a Cowboys
00:00:42.820 game, I got about 20 people in town here, and we'll spend a few days together, we'll
00:00:47.100 have a good time.
00:00:48.140 Conversation came about leadership, I said, look, everybody wants to be a leader because
00:00:53.140 it's the highest position, I said, yes, I've said that many times, but I also believe everybody's
00:00:57.760 a leader, you're a leader.
00:01:00.400 That bullying kid that bullied you, he's also a leader.
00:01:03.000 The drug dealer, he's a leader, I think everyone's a leader.
00:01:05.440 The most negative person you know in your family that converts other people into being
00:01:08.480 negative, that person's a leader.
00:01:10.900 The person that convinced you to smoke weed, he's a leader.
00:01:12.880 The person that convinced you to give up on your dreams, that person's a leader.
00:01:16.980 The person that convinced you to go watch a horror movie, you didn't feel like watching
00:01:19.560 a horror movie, that person's a leader.
00:01:21.360 Everybody leads, except the only question is, what are you leading people to do?
00:01:28.040 You, New Year's here, you got resolutions.
00:01:31.640 What are you leading people to do?
00:01:32.800 Let me tell you what I used to lead people to do.
00:01:34.480 I used to lead people to drink beer.
00:01:37.660 When I joined the army, one guy said, you know, let's see who can drink the most beer one night.
00:01:41.980 And we sat there and became a tradition.
00:01:44.480 23 beers in one night.
00:01:46.240 Oh my gosh.
00:01:47.700 People were hammered.
00:01:48.700 Oh my, that guy, Ken Hank, he drank.
00:01:50.760 23, and he hasn't even thrown up yet.
00:01:52.800 That's a legit guy.
00:01:54.000 Beer bonk.
00:01:54.580 How many can you do these beer bonks?
00:01:56.540 That's still leadership.
00:01:57.760 It's just leading people into a beer bonk.
00:01:59.800 At Rosarita or Tijuana or all that stuff.
00:02:02.240 I mean, yes, this is Patrick with David.
00:02:04.500 I used to lead people into doing nothing.
00:02:05.960 Now I used to lead people to the gym.
00:02:07.740 I used to lead people to go play basketball at R.D. Wide.
00:02:10.100 We'd go play baseball sometimes, hang out sometimes, do nothing sometimes, play Fester's Quest sometimes, play Zelda sometimes.
00:02:15.780 All of that stuff is leadership.
00:02:17.200 But most people lead people into things that is just nonsense with very little reward to it.
00:02:27.180 And generally, it's temporary reward.
00:02:29.240 If you're making any resolutions for 2019, this would be my challenge to you if you write it on a piece of paper.
00:02:34.000 I would challenge you to be a leader amongst other leaders who are positively making an impact in the world.
00:02:42.260 Because if you were to ask yourself right now, well, you know, Pat's making a point right now.
00:02:46.280 Everyone is a leader.
00:02:47.680 If I'm a leader, meaning you, what have I been leading people to do in 2018?
00:02:52.920 Huh.
00:02:53.420 Did you lead someone to quit or give up or turn against another friend or an acquaintance?
00:02:59.440 Did you lead people to read some books this year?
00:03:01.660 Did you lead people to work harder this year?
00:03:04.120 Did you lead people to not work that hard this year?
00:03:06.740 Like, oh, don't work that hard.
00:03:08.000 Life is not all about money.
00:03:09.800 But it's because you don't want to work that hard.
00:03:11.380 And you're afraid that other people may work hard and pass you up.
00:03:14.440 You have to really take inventory right now.
00:03:16.880 Look, 2019 is not going to be any different.
00:03:18.820 Everyone is going to write a bunch of resolutions down.
00:03:20.520 And the only people that will literally have a better 2019 than a 2018 are those who are willing to be extremely transparent with themselves.
00:03:31.880 Very hard to do.
00:03:32.920 Most won't do it.
00:03:34.120 Only a few will do it.
00:03:35.820 Only a few.
00:03:36.540 Matter of fact, my middle son, just had a conversation with him earlier today about leadership.
00:03:41.140 Tough one.
00:03:41.800 We were at the Cowboys game when we left.
00:03:43.440 Wasn't an easy one.
00:03:44.800 But I had to teach him.
00:03:45.660 I had to talk to him about the value of leadership.
00:03:48.020 Because my goals in life, the position I want to be known for, isn't a doctor, isn't a doctor, isn't a captain, isn't a, you know, sergeant or any of that stuff.
00:04:01.020 For me, the biggest compliment is when other leaders who are positively making an impact in the world, when they say, that guy influenced me to do something I couldn't do on my own.
00:04:11.740 That, to me, is the highest level of leadership.
00:04:13.960 Because in my life, other men and women who have done that to me, I think about them as a leader that positively impacted this man's life.
00:04:22.600 And the list is a long list.
00:04:24.680 A long list.
00:04:26.780 I challenge you to want to be on that list for other people in 2019.
00:04:30.440 And by the way, it pays very well.
00:04:32.960 That's a 15,000 square foot home, tennis court, swimming pool.
00:04:36.960 I don't know how many bedrooms.
00:04:38.040 Four stories.
00:04:39.400 All the way up there, it's like a cigar lounge with a bar.
00:04:41.640 You relax.
00:04:42.180 You see the view of Dallas over there.
00:04:46.040 Eight-car garage.
00:04:48.480 Life is good when you lead others to do things that they wouldn't do on their own.
00:04:55.380 As long as it's positively leading others to do something they wouldn't do on their own.
00:05:01.000 Thanks, everybody, for listening.
