00:00:00.000 prison reform okay thoughts on it what's work what doesn't work you know your amount of experience
00:00:06.960 you have is how many good case studies you have as a guy that went in for 10 years
00:00:10.540 came out become a became a good contributing citizen that's done very well for himself and
00:00:15.000 if yes why yes let me let me tell you that uh we're always hearing about criminal justice reform
00:00:22.020 criminal justice reform well we only need to reform what doesn't work and what does work
00:00:27.920 is the criminal justice system in Florida. Crime is down. Criminals aren't running wild.
00:00:35.160 There needs to be reform in Chicago, but the reform needs to be locking more people up
00:00:39.460 and getting people's attention. When we send people to prison in the state of Florida,
00:00:45.980 what I would emphasize even more than they do, if you take somebody out of society for 5, 10,
00:00:51.880 15, 20 years, pick a number, we need to make sure that they are offered the opportunity for
00:00:57.760 a skill set so that when they come back into society that they can work and be productive
00:01:02.920 and behave. We do some of that. We need to do more of that. But we also need to understand that
00:01:11.180 people run around screaming, oh, we need criminal justice reform. Well, what's wrong with a system
00:01:17.660 that's got crime at a 50-year low? What's wrong with a system in Polk County that's got crime at
00:01:23.720 a 54-year low. Well, here's what happens. People think that just happens. It's just because it's
00:01:31.100 always been that way. The legislators, some Republicans, probably 10 years ago, eight years
00:01:38.320 ago, started into this, oh, we need to reform. We need to cut down these prison sentences.
00:01:44.900 And I got to thinking, my goodness, how could they think like that? Well, back in the day
00:01:49.720 When the felons owned Florida, they were either not thought of yet.
00:01:55.140 They were in diapers or elementary school or middle school.
00:01:58.680 We changed the law.
00:02:00.860 Crime fell precipitously, and they've always lived in a safe state.
00:02:04.700 So they don't know there's anything other than a safe state.
00:02:07.620 And now they're wanting to tweak and make small snippets of society happy by going, oh, we need criminal justice reform.
00:02:17.580 No, we don't.
00:02:18.280 we need criminal reform. And that criminal reform comes in, you're either going to behave
00:02:24.200 or you're going to be held accountable. We have a forgiving system. You're going to prison,
00:02:30.220 however, if you do something very bad or very dangerous or hurt someone. And if you go to
00:02:37.360 prison, we're going to give you robust training before you get out at 85% of your sentence,
00:02:43.400 which I think is generous. We give them 15% off. We ought to give them 100% and let them earn the
00:02:50.360 15% off. And then we're going to train you so you can be a productive member of society.
00:02:57.860 I see those people that have been to the county jail or to prison and have come out and have become
00:03:03.960 productive members of society. I go to church with them. I see them in the community. I have
00:03:10.020 my picture with them but if you want to misbehave you're going to be held accountable how do they
00:03:15.960 talk to me when they see you at church what do they tell you they hug me thank me yeah i've got
00:03:20.120 i've got a faith-based dorm we help people with mental health counseling with drug addiction
00:03:26.660 counseling i've got a program where now if you can't afford your your medicine your mental health
00:03:31.600 medicine and you're in the jail we'll give it to you when you get out of jail if you'll take a
00:03:36.560 probation as opposed to a year in jail. We'll give you that. We're going to help you, but we're also
00:03:42.760 going to hold you accountable. We're going to be like a good parent and a good parent does whatever
00:03:48.940 is necessary to protect the children, the rest of the family and society. And that's what we do
00:03:55.940 in Polk County. You are a hero, sir. You're amazing for what you're doing. It's an honor.
00:04:01.200 Yeah, truly, when I say this to you, because, you know, as a kid who grew up, you know, not necessarily having a direction of what I was going to do was men like you who took the time to work with me that got me to make better decisions to be where I'm at today.
00:04:16.640 And sometimes you don't know the impact you're making for decades.
00:04:19.120 I know, obviously, you know it because you've been around and I'm sure you've had a lot of conversations with people that come up to you and tell you I am where I'm at because of you.
00:04:24.920 But you're a hero.
00:04:25.860 I think we need to share your story even more.
00:04:28.220 I'm very excited that you're getting the 10 to 20 million views on a weekly
00:04:31.300 basis because Americans are yearning for this.
00:04:35.180 They're hoping Polk County becomes America.
00:04:38.000 They're hoping the standards you're using comes to their counties so they can
00:04:41.740 feel comfortable.
00:04:42.460 Their kids going out there and playing outside and knowing there's a guy who
00:04:45.720 takes his job so seriously,
00:04:46.840 he's going to be keeping the families and the kids safe.
00:04:49.180 You know,
00:04:49.380 this whole thing with Vag Tim and a PBD podcast started with a phone,
00:04:51.740 me and Mario.
00:04:52.340 That's it.
00:04:53.080 And it grew today to,
00:04:54.320 you know,
00:04:54.600 15 million subscribers almost and 164 full-time employees.
00:04:58.220 And that relationship, are you watching us and supporting us?
