00:00:02.500 Guaranteed human.
00:00:05.880 Foreign scavengers have torn apart our once beautiful American dream.
00:00:10.480 We had an American dream that you don't hear so much about.
00:00:13.380 Our country and its taxpayers have been ripped off for more than 50 years,
00:00:17.640 but it is not going to happen anymore.
00:00:21.020 It's not going to happen.
00:00:23.580 This is a 47 Morning Update special edition with Ben Ferguson.
00:00:27.980 Good Thursday morning. Ben Ferguson with you.
00:00:30.320 It's nice to have you on the 47 Morning Update.
00:00:32.760 And this morning will be a special edition dealing with all things tariffs
00:00:37.140 and the president calling it Liberation Day.
00:00:40.240 The moral of the story with Donald Trump was this.
00:00:42.560 They charged us, so we're going to charge them.
00:00:45.500 I'll explain exactly how the tariffs work, what it means for you,
00:00:49.200 and how long this could last.
00:00:51.600 It's the 47 Morning Update, and it starts right now.
00:00:54.780 Story number one.
00:00:55.840 President Donald Trump on Wednesday revealed a chart detailing the reciprocal tariffs
00:01:01.680 that he will impose on other countries,
00:01:04.060 wanting to make it very clear to the American people
00:01:06.820 that these countries are charging us first,
00:01:09.900 so now we are going to charge them back.
00:01:12.880 China, 67% tariffs charged to the U.S.,
00:01:16.760 including currency manipulation and trade barriers,
00:01:20.240 was a perfect example of what Donald Trump was talking about.
00:01:23.580 And that is exactly why he announced his trade policies on what he has deemed Liberation Day.
00:01:29.540 Here's the president in his own words at the White House.
00:01:32.800 We have some very, very good news today,
00:01:35.880 and a lot of good things are happening for our country.
00:01:38.520 Please sit down.
00:01:40.140 My fellow Americans, this is Liberation Day.
00:01:43.460 I'm waiting for a long time.
00:01:47.840 April 2nd, 2025, will forever be remembered as the day American industry was reborn,
00:01:55.540 the day America's destiny was reclaimed,
00:01:58.680 and the day that we began to make America wealthy again.
00:02:04.300 We're going to make it wealthy, good and wealthy.
00:02:06.620 For decades, our country has been looted, pillaged, raped, and plundered by nations near and far,
00:02:13.640 both friend and foe alike.
00:02:16.100 American steelworkers, autoworkers, farmers, and skilled craftsmen,
00:02:20.240 we have a lot of them here with us today,
00:02:22.340 they really suffered gravely.
00:02:24.500 They watched in anguish as foreign leaders have stolen our jobs,
00:02:29.000 foreign cheaters have ransacked our factories,
00:02:31.800 and foreign scavengers have torn apart our once-beautiful American dream.
00:02:37.280 We had an American dream that you don't hear so much about.
00:02:40.080 You did four years ago, and you are now,
00:02:42.640 but you don't too often, for many years and decades even,
00:02:46.140 you didn't hear too much about.
00:02:47.780 Our country and its taxpayers have been ripped off for more than 50 years,
00:02:52.540 but it is not going to happen anymore.
00:02:55.800 It's not going to happen.
00:02:56.660 The president also making it clear he knows how the media is going to play this,
00:03:02.760 doom and gloom.
00:03:03.700 But the reality is there's quite a few important groups in this country
00:03:07.300 that are backing the president's plan.
00:03:09.740 And that is exactly why the president made it clear to the world
00:03:12.400 that the day of economic surrender are over.
00:03:15.420 Who is behind the president?
00:03:17.020 Well, the Coalition for a Prosperous America.
00:03:19.540 Chairman put out a statement saying this,
00:03:21.760 A permanent universal baseline tariff resets the global trade environment
00:03:27.160 and finally addresses the destructive legacy
00:03:29.960 of decades of misguided free trade policies.
00:03:34.340 President Trump's decision to implement a baseline tariff
00:03:37.460 is a game-changing shift that prioritizes American manufacturing,
00:03:42.460 protects working-class jobs,
00:03:45.080 and safeguards our economic security from adversaries like China.
00:03:49.120 This is exactly the type of bold action America needs
00:03:52.460 to restore its industrial leadership.
00:03:54.820 Today's actions will deliver lasting benefits to the U.S. economy
00:03:58.320 and working-class Americans,
00:04:00.740 cementing President Trump's legacy
00:04:02.340 as the one that ushered in a new golden age
00:04:05.240 of American industrialization and prosperity.
00:04:08.500 The National Cattlemen's Beef Association put out a statement as well,
00:04:12.620 saying, quote,
00:04:13.300 For too long, America's family farmers and ranchers
00:04:17.660 have been mistreated by certain trading partners around the world.
00:04:21.860 President Trump is taking action to address numerous trade barriers
00:04:25.420 that prevent consumers overseas from enjoying high-quality,
00:04:30.460 wholesome American beef.
00:04:32.260 The NCBA will continue engaging with the White House
00:04:35.320 to ensure fair treatment for America's cattle producers
00:04:38.500 around the world
00:04:39.860 and optimize opportunities for exports abroad.
00:04:43.340 The Steel Manufacturers Association also praising Trump.
00:04:47.720 And again, you will not be hearing these statements from the media.
00:04:52.100 And that's why I'm giving them to you right now.
00:04:54.660 The steel manufacturers said this,
00:04:56.540 President Trump is a champion of the domestic steel industry,
00:05:00.240 and his America First trade policy
00:05:02.380 is designed to fight the unfair trade
00:05:04.900 that has harmed American workers
00:05:06.860 and weakened manufacturing in the United States.
00:05:09.740 The recently reinvigorated 232 steel tariffs
00:05:13.580 have already started creating American jobs
00:05:16.380 and bolstering the domestic steel industry.
00:05:19.380 President Trump is working to turn America
00:05:21.220 into a manufacturing powerhouse,
00:05:23.740 and the steel tariffs are driving that movement.
00:05:27.320 The Alliance for American Manufacturing
00:05:29.820 also putting out a statement talking about
00:05:32.080 this is a game-changer for American workers,
00:05:35.060 saying today's trade action prioritizes
00:05:37.620 domestic manufacturers and the American workers.
00:05:41.540 These hardworking men and women
00:05:43.360 have seen unfair trade
00:05:45.460 cut the ground from beneath their feet for decades.
00:05:48.820 They deserve a fighting chance.
00:05:50.800 Our workers can out-compete anywhere in the world,
00:05:53.760 but they need a level playing field to do it.
00:05:56.320 This trade reset is a necessary step
00:05:58.520 in the right direction.
00:06:00.020 The National Electrical Contractors Association CEO
00:06:03.140 also saying this,
00:06:04.620 President Trump has consistently prioritized policies
00:06:07.780 that put the electrical industry as a priority,
00:06:11.480 and we recognize his commitment
00:06:12.940 to strengthening our nation's economy.
00:06:15.820 As these new tariffs take effect,
00:06:17.460 we look forward to working with the administration
00:06:19.120 to ensure that electrical contractors
00:06:22.080 and the entire electrical industry
00:06:23.840 can continue powering America efficiently
00:06:26.720 while navigating potential costs
00:06:28.760 and supply chain challenges.
00:06:30.760 These are just some of the major industries
00:06:34.000 that are backing the president's move.
00:06:36.820 Now, of course, the media is going to tell you
00:06:38.600 this is a disaster,
00:06:39.920 that it's going to hurt our economy,
00:06:41.700 that it's starting a trade war.
00:06:44.240 President of the United States of America
00:06:45.960 making it very clear,
00:06:47.380 I am here to stand up for the American worker.
00:06:50.680 In a few moments,
00:06:51.900 I will sign a historic executive order
00:06:54.160 instituting reciprocal tariffs
00:06:57.620 on countries throughout the world.
00:06:59.640 That means they do it to us
00:07:02.580 and we do it to them.
00:07:04.380 Very simple.
00:07:05.200 It can't get any simpler than that.
00:07:10.060 This is one of the most important days,
00:07:12.760 in my opinion,
00:07:13.780 in American history.
00:07:16.200 It's our declaration
00:07:17.360 of economic independence.
00:07:20.140 For years,
00:07:20.760 hardworking American citizens
00:07:22.340 were forced to sit on the sidelines
00:07:24.320 as other nations got rich and powerful,
00:07:27.260 much of it at our expense.
00:07:30.060 But now it's our turn to prosper
00:07:32.220 and in so doing,
00:07:33.960 use trillions and trillions of dollars
00:07:36.140 to reduce our taxes
00:07:37.580 and pay down our national debt
00:07:39.420 and it'll all happen very quickly.
00:07:41.940 With today's action,
00:07:43.420 we are finally going to be able
00:07:45.220 to make America great again,
00:07:47.460 greater than ever before.
00:07:49.380 President Trump wasn't the only one
00:07:53.900 excited about what this can do
00:07:55.600 for the country.
00:07:56.620 Speaker Mike Johnson saying
00:07:58.020 President Trump is sending
00:07:59.200 a clear message
00:08:00.220 with Liberation Day
00:08:01.640 that America will not be exploited
00:08:03.620 by unfair trade practices anymore.
00:08:06.840 These tariffs restore fair
00:08:08.360 and reciprocal trade
00:08:09.680 and level the playing field
00:08:11.160 for American workers and innovators.
00:08:13.480 The president understands
00:08:14.860 that free trade only works
00:08:16.800 when it's fair.
00:08:18.380 Governor Jeff Landry of Louisiana,
00:08:20.640 a very important state
00:08:21.680 when it comes to shipping,
00:08:23.060 said this,
00:08:24.220 it's pro-jobs, pro-business
00:08:25.900 and pro-America.
00:08:27.480 Senator Jim Banks saying
00:08:28.660 the decision by President Trump today
00:08:30.320 to impose reciprocal tariffs
00:08:31.840 will be so good for Indiana.
00:08:34.900 Those are the manufacturing jobs
00:08:36.900 that President Trump
00:08:37.700 is bringing back from overseas.
00:08:40.200 Senator Bill Cassidy saying
00:08:41.600 the president's trade agenda
00:08:42.700 can pave the way
00:08:43.780 for stronger trade deals,
00:08:45.840 fairer rules and real results.
00:08:47.720 I'm excited to work
00:08:48.860 with President Trump
00:08:49.480 to make it happen.
00:08:50.600 Louisiana workers and families
00:08:52.080 deserve nothing less.
00:08:53.900 And the president wasn't done there.
00:08:55.900 He also had this to say
00:08:57.680 about the reciprocal tariffs
00:08:59.480 and why it is working
00:09:00.760 the way that he is doing it.
00:09:02.460 The tariffs will be
00:09:04.120 not a full reciprocal.
00:09:06.740 I could have done that,
00:09:07.780 I guess,
00:09:08.480 but it would have been tough
00:09:09.860 for a lot of countries
00:09:10.740 who didn't want to do that.
00:09:11.820 I'd like to see the chart
00:09:12.920 if you have it.
00:09:14.000 Could you bring it up, Howard?
00:09:15.480 This is our great Secretary of Commerce,
00:09:19.920 Howard Lutnick.
00:09:21.840 Thanks, Howard.
00:09:24.140 So if you look at that,
00:09:26.900 China, first row,
00:09:28.260 China, 67 percent.
00:09:30.360 That's tariffs charged to the USA,
00:09:33.620 including currency manipulation
00:09:35.920 and trade barriers.
00:09:37.200 So 67 percent,
00:09:39.140 I think you can,
00:09:39.800 for the most part, see it.
00:09:41.140 Those with good eyes,
00:09:42.120 with bad eyes.
00:09:43.200 We didn't want to bring,
00:09:44.020 it's very windy out here.
00:09:45.300 We didn't want to bring out
00:09:46.080 the big charts
00:09:46.720 because it had no chance
00:09:47.800 of standing.
00:09:48.860 Fortunately,
00:09:49.580 we came armed
00:09:50.300 with a little smaller chart.
00:09:52.020 So it's 67 percent,
00:09:53.480 so we're going to be charging
00:09:54.520 a discounted reciprocal tariff
00:09:56.920 of 34 percent.
00:09:57.960 I think,
00:09:58.880 in other words,
00:09:59.320 they charge us,
00:10:00.240 we charge them,
00:10:00.900 we charge them less.
00:10:01.760 So how can anybody be upset?
00:10:03.520 They will be
00:10:04.100 because we never charged
00:10:05.100 anybody anything,
00:10:06.140 but now we're going to charge.
00:10:08.720 European Union,
00:10:09.780 they're very tough,
00:10:10.660 very, very tough traders.
00:10:11.920 You know,
00:10:13.780 you think of European Union,
00:10:15.440 very friendly.
00:10:16.260 They rip us off.
00:10:17.280 It's so sad to see.
00:10:19.000 It's so pathetic.
00:10:20.740 Thirty-nine percent,
00:10:22.100 we're going to charge them 20 percent,
00:10:23.800 so we're charging them
00:10:24.560 essentially half.
00:10:25.980 Vietnam,
00:10:26.880 great negotiators,
00:10:28.400 great people.
00:10:29.700 They like me,
00:10:30.360 I like them.
00:10:30.940 The problem is,
00:10:31.720 they charge us 90 percent.
00:10:33.540 We're going to charge them
00:10:34.280 46 percent tariff.
00:10:36.460 Taiwan,
00:10:37.380 where they make,
00:10:38.000 they took all of our
00:10:39.300 computer chips
00:10:40.620 and semiconductors.
00:10:41.860 We used to be the king,
00:10:42.960 right?
00:10:43.280 We were everything.
00:10:44.740 We had all of it.
00:10:45.980 Now we have almost none of it
00:10:47.340 except the biggest company
00:10:48.520 is coming in.
00:10:49.220 They're going to have,
00:10:49.780 we're going to end up with
00:10:50.420 almost 40 percent.
00:10:51.640 Lee Zeldin's working
00:10:52.540 to get their approvals.
00:10:54.240 And it's an amazing company.
00:10:56.120 Mr. Wei,
00:10:57.320 of one of the great companies
00:10:58.720 of the world,
00:10:59.400 actually,
00:10:59.840 they're coming in from Taiwan
00:11:01.320 and they're going to build
00:11:02.060 one of the biggest plants
00:11:03.440 in the world,
00:11:04.000 maybe the biggest for that.
00:11:05.860 But 64 percent,
00:11:07.160 we're going to charge them
00:11:07.880 32 percent.
00:11:08.960 Japan,
00:11:09.940 very, very tough,
00:11:11.240 great people.
00:11:13.320 And again,
00:11:13.760 I don't blame the people
00:11:14.680 for doing it.
00:11:15.700 It's,
00:11:16.120 I think they're very smart
00:11:16.940 in doing it.
00:11:17.320 I blame the people
00:11:18.080 that sat right in that
00:11:19.040 oval office,
00:11:19.640 right over there,
00:11:20.940 right behind the resolute desk
00:11:22.440 or whichever desk they chose.
00:11:25.480 Japan,
00:11:26.120 46 percent.
00:11:27.180 They would charge us 46 percent
00:11:28.880 and much higher
00:11:29.900 for certain items
00:11:30.800 like cars,
00:11:32.120 you know,
00:11:32.300 little items like cars.
00:11:34.160 46 percent,
00:11:35.180 we're charging them 24 percent.
00:11:37.260 India,
00:11:37.780 very,
00:11:38.180 very tough,
00:11:38.760 very,
00:11:39.220 very tough.
00:11:40.280 The prime minister
00:11:41.520 just left
00:11:42.260 and he's a great friend
00:11:43.620 of mine,
00:11:43.980 but I said,
00:11:44.540 you're a friend of mine,
00:11:45.420 but you're not
00:11:46.400 treating us right.
00:11:47.660 They charge us 52 percent.
00:11:49.340 You have to understand,
00:11:49.980 we charge them almost nothing
00:11:51.100 for years and years
00:11:52.100 and decades.
00:11:52.860 And it was only
00:11:54.140 seven years ago
00:11:56.160 when I came in,
00:11:57.580 we started with China
00:11:59.040 in charge
00:11:59.440 and we took in
00:12:00.100 hundreds of billions
00:12:01.400 of dollars
00:12:02.000 from China
00:12:03.180 in tariffs
00:12:04.280 and they understood,
00:12:06.220 honestly.
00:12:07.320 President Xi understood.
00:12:08.540 He said,
00:12:08.860 look,
00:12:09.060 I understand
00:12:09.680 and the other countries
00:12:10.780 and they all understand
00:12:11.800 we're going to have to go
00:12:13.020 through a little tough love,
00:12:14.100 maybe,
00:12:14.820 but they all understand.
00:12:16.000 They're ripping us off
00:12:16.880 and they understood it.
00:12:18.120 So the big takeaway
00:12:19.360 from the president
00:12:20.340 of the United States
00:12:21.240 of America is this.
00:12:22.780 These are countries
00:12:23.720 that are doing this
00:12:24.780 to us first
00:12:25.680 and have been doing it
00:12:26.640 at a much higher rate.
00:12:27.860 We are not going back
00:12:29.340 with the same number
00:12:30.120 that they're putting
00:12:30.800 on our goods
00:12:31.780 and services.
00:12:32.980 And this is a time
00:12:34.120 for us to have
00:12:34.980 free and fair trade
00:12:36.800 where America
00:12:37.660 is not being taken
00:12:38.540 advantage of.
00:12:39.560 There is no doubt
00:12:40.560 that the media
00:12:41.120 is going to use this moment
00:12:42.240 to attack the president.
00:12:43.640 But remember
00:12:44.300 the people
00:12:45.340 that I told you about
00:12:46.660 earlier in their statements.
00:12:48.380 Real American workers,
00:12:49.840 organizations,
00:12:50.540 saying it is long overdue
00:12:52.440 and this is going
00:12:53.760 to be good
00:12:54.300 for America long term.
00:12:56.280 That is exactly
00:12:57.140 why the president
00:12:57.960 is calling it
00:12:58.620 Liberation Day
00:12:59.560 and why so many
00:13:00.960 American workers
00:13:01.800 are celebrating
00:13:02.640 this big win.
