00:23:20.020 democrat cory booker democrat chris murphy both from the far left and and they were doing everything

00:23:25.320 they can to defeat this bill well we ended up having a massive massive victory today uh there

00:23:32.720 There were a total of 74 senators that voted for the bill today.

00:23:37.560 By the way, that doesn't happen, just to put it in perspective.

00:23:40.520 When was the last time on a pretty intense and debated piece of legislation,

00:23:45.640 not a kumbaya piece of something, like this was not kumbaya, where you get 74?

00:23:50.480 I don't remember another vote that I can think of that was this significant.

00:23:55.240 Well, and I will say also, look, we said from the beginning,

00:23:58.920 I've said on this podcast a number of times,

00:24:00.720 My objective was not to eke by with 60.

00:24:03.580 60 is what you need to clear a filibuster.

00:24:05.740 And to be clear, Cory Booker and Chris Murphy are trying to filibuster this bill.

00:24:18.000 We got 74, and actually we're even stronger than that because there were two Democrats who were absent today, Chris Coons and Jackie Rosen, and they're both co-sponsors of the bill.

00:24:28.740 And so we're at 76. We have more than three quarters of the Senate in support of this bill.

00:24:36.660 We also got 25, and with the two of them, that will be 27 Democrats.

00:24:42.060 So we got more than half of the Democrat caucus, despite the fact that multiple major interest groups on the left are lobbying against it.

00:24:50.040 You've got the trial lawyers lobbying against it. You've got the AFL-CIO lobbying against it.

00:24:53.800 The NAACP is lobbying against it. So it is remarkable. 0.99

00:24:57.180 Now, why did we get such a big vote?

00:25:00.340 Because we've got, number one, it's a really strong piece of legislation.

00:25:03.600 But number two, we built an amazingly strong coalition behind this bill.

00:25:09.800 That was part of your strategy to make sure this was bipartisan, not with one sponsor that was a Democrat.

00:25:48.440 um it was unbelievably i i've joked that middle east peace is easy compared to college sports and

00:25:56.660 many people care about it less than college sports yeah um but we got a bipartisan bill

00:26:02.980 we had five republican co-sponsors five democrat co-sponsors and then

00:26:08.520 the coalition behind it we have 29 conferences supporting it so all the major conferences are

00:26:14.260 behind it. We had over 370 colleges and universities backing it. The historically

00:26:20.080 black colleges and universities are incredibly vocal supporting the bill, enthusiastic supporting

00:26:25.340 the bill. The Major League Pros, the NFL, the NBA, Major League Baseball, National Hockey League are

00:26:33.100 all supporting the bill. The NBA Players Association, the NFL Players Association are supporting this

00:26:38.140 bill. The Olympic Committee, the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee is enthusiastically

00:26:42.640 supporting this bill. We have hundreds of coaches across the country supporting the bill. Yesterday

00:26:49.420 we did a press conference where we had student athletes from all over the country come out

00:26:54.560 asking Congress to pass this bill. We had coaches like John Calipari, basketball legend, the old

00:27:00.520 Kentucky coach, is now the head coach at University of Arkansas. He was speaking in favor of it.

00:27:04.840 Mark Few, the basketball coach at Gonzaga, he was there speaking in favor of it. We had Craig

00:27:10.260 robinson the head of the basketball coaches association of america who happens to be michelle

00:27:14.420 obama's brother interesting he was speaking out again so that was very helpful for getting

00:27:21.160 democrats on board but all right what does the bill do it it brings order out of the chaos it

00:27:27.460 sets some basic rules so one of the problems is the transfer portal and by the way why is the

00:27:32.500 transfer portal such a problem it it means at the end of every season every team has the potential

00:27:38.680 to blow up, and you have a lot of the players

00:27:40.680 in every team leave and jump from school to school.

00:27:43.140 The way I described it is

00:27:44.460 it would be like free agency in the NFL if every

00:27:46.740 year at the end of the season, every single

00:27:48.880 player is up for grabs.

00:27:51.060 You would get no continuity, and

00:27:52.840 you'd have every quarterback in the league

00:27:54.920 that would just disappear to another team, every wide

00:27:56.860 receiver. You'd have no franchise players.

00:27:59.240 You would have no team.

00:28:00.800 That's what was happening in college sports.

00:28:02.880 Imagine if you had LeBron James playing

00:28:04.720 for 15 or 16 different teams

00:28:06.680 in 15 years.

00:28:36.380 will not go on to the nfl so they're not going to earn their living playing sports after college

00:28:41.180 yes but what happens if a student transfers the odds of that student athlete graduating

00:28:48.200 plummet and if a student transfers multiple times the odds drop to almost nothing because

00:28:54.240 you end up having a student athlete you don't get any attachment to the school you don't have

00:29:00.320 any loyalty you you don't build relationships with professors you end up that many of the

00:29:05.940 student athletes if they're transferring multiple times they're not really working on their academic

00:29:09.520 coursework their credits don't always transfer they're unlikely to graduate and if they're not

00:29:13.920 going on to the nba or nfl they end up coming out of it having made a little bit of money on nil in

00:29:19.780 college not having a degree not having the skills and and what is powerful about college athletics

00:29:25.400 is it's an avenue for education for so many young people now i think it is better that student

00:29:31.460 athletes are compensated i think the old system was unfair that you had incredible athletes

00:29:35.960 generating millions of dollars of revenue that everyone got rich but them and and as a conservative

00:29:40.980 i think you ought to be able to earn the fruits of your labor if you produce if you're a star

00:29:45.980 quarterback tebow and johnny football are two examples of this they made almost nothing

00:29:50.480 transformed by the way those universities uh including like building the texas a&m stadium

00:29:56.060 for what it is now that was on the back of johnny football uh the amount of booster money the amount

00:30:00.540 of money that was coming to the canvas and then you're having to do things on the table. I don't

00:30:03.940 blame, by the way, athletes for doing that in the past. Tim Tebow should have made more money in the

00:30:08.240 NCAA than he did in the NFL. Yeah, it was not fair and it was not right. So it is an improvement,

00:30:14.380 I believe, that athletes can be compensated if they have enormous skill. What we try to do in

00:30:20.000 this bill is set some basic rules. So on the transfer, every athlete gets one free transfer.

00:30:25.040 All right. So if you want to transfer, you can, but just once. For any reason. For any reason.

00:30:28.940 there are no restrictions you can have a second transfer and we specify you could have a second

00:30:34.640 transfer number one if your coach leaves yep number two if your programs cancel you're at

00:30:39.560 Ole Miss they cancel their tennis program you can transfer and go play tennis somewhere else

00:30:43.240 or number three if you're the victim of sexual assault or sexual harassment so those are three

00:30:49.140 limited exceptions and the then beyond that if you transfer a second time you can do it

00:30:54.820 but you have to sit out a year you have to red shirt a year you lose a year of your eligibility

00:30:58.960 that used to be the old rule before you lose a year of eligibility so that's the penalty

00:31:03.180 right and and that will mean that will slow down the transfers massively you may get one

00:31:09.700 but what happens and and by the way understand these are you know these are not pro athletes

00:31:15.960 in the nfl or nba who are 25 or 30 years old that are grown adults these are often kids that are 17

00:31:22.080 18 19 years old so they're frequently not terribly financially sophisticated they're just showing up

00:31:27.280 at college and you have agents who are unscrupulous who will go to them and say hey ben i can get you

00:31:34.520 a little bit more money if you transfer to alabama yeah and and the agents are getting a big cut of

00:31:39.240 the take and they don't care if it screws up your education it's terrible for you if they can get

00:31:43.920 you to move and they get to put some money in the bank you have this happening over and over again

00:31:48.060 and it's hurting the student-athletes.

00:31:50.520 So one transfer is a big improve, but we also have eligibility.

00:31:54.980 Say every athlete has five years of eligibility, and it ends at age 24.

00:31:59.080 So there's not going to be 25, 26, 27-year-olds.

00:32:01.680 Age 24, you're done.

00:32:03.160 Five years, you're done.

00:32:05.380 Those two reforms are a big deal.

00:32:08.020 We also give the authority to enforce basic rules like no pros,

00:32:12.940 and you can say you're not eligible if you're a pro.

00:32:15.220 Right now, the leagues are not able to enforce that because that gets struck down under the antitrust laws.

00:32:23.620 You look at Brendan Soresby, who a local hometown judge says, all right, he can play at Texas Tech because we want a great quarterback at Tech.

00:32:32.800 You know, gambling is becoming more and more of a problem in sports.

00:32:36.720 And if there's no ability to police it, if you end up having athletes betting on their own games, you are inviting just a massive corruption into the system.

00:40:52.080 of sermons, lauding Hamas leader, urging congregants to vote for El Saeed. Abdel Hamid

00:41:00.880 Al-Ghiziawa of the Muslim Community Association of Ann Arbor called Ismail Hanayeh a, quote,

00:41:09.340 heroic martyr and a, quote, symbol of jihad. Left-wing Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed's

00:41:17.480 email scrubbed videos of his sermons from YouTube, including one in which he gave a, quote,

00:41:23.620 quote, absentee funeral prayer, hailing the late Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh as a, quote, heroic

00:41:31.940 martyr, and another in which he urged his congregants to vote for El Saeed. The Muslim

00:41:38.340 Community Association of Ann Arbor's YouTube channel featured dozens of recordings of Imam

00:41:44.440 Abdelhamid Al-Ghizawa's sermons as recently as Tuesday, but now shows only the message, quote,
