00:00:00.000 Days like today highlight how fundamental post-secondary education has always been
00:00:05.620 to making women's lives better, and also how post-secondary education continues to play that crucial role. 0.99
00:00:14.740 Last September, I was here to announce that Alberta's government was contributing $5 million in planning funding
00:00:20.880 for the new multidisciplinary science hub here at the University of Calgary.
00:00:26.000 Building on that, I have the honour today to officially announce that Budget 2024 will invest $55 million over the next three years
00:00:36.340 to build the new multidisciplinary science hub.
00:00:41.700 Yes!
00:00:45.420 Thank you.
00:00:47.860 Definitely something to cheer for.
00:00:50.120 The new building will serve as a primary research collaboration and multidisciplinary centre
00:00:56.440 for the Faculty of Science, the university's second-largest faculty.
00:01:01.220 The hub will house research laboratories, greenhouses, state-of-the-art instrumentation,
00:01:06.980 laboratory support spaces, and workspace for researchers, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and other trainees.
00:01:14.520 Alberta needs more people trained in STEM careers, science, technology, engineering, and math,
00:01:19.860 and the new hub will help at least 2,000 more students each year get the training they need, right here in Alberta.
00:01:28.700 The new building will be designed to allow for future growth and will be a component of the university's science district.
00:01:36.560 This will create new opportunities for scientific research and collaboration with partners in government, industry, and society
00:01:44.760 that will benefit Alberta, Canada, and the entire world.
00:01:48.980 Alberta's government will make an investment of $55 million starting in the 2025-26 budget year.
00:01:56.120 And with the university contributing the funding for the first year of construction,
00:02:00.520 we will see shovels in the ground for the multidisciplinary science hub very soon.
00:02:05.680 This investment and the others in Budget 2024 recognize the crucial role post-secondary institutions play
00:02:13.220 in meeting the needs of our economy.
00:02:16.380 Our future relies on Albertans with the skills, knowledge, and competencies to take on the challenges we face.
00:02:24.160 Our post-secondary institutions are the doorway to that future.
00:02:28.860 Funding for the multidisciplinary hub is just one of the targeted investments we are making
00:02:33.300 to increase seats in high-demand programs that support priority industry sectors
00:02:38.640 as we continue to work with industry to better forecast the needs of tomorrow.
00:02:44.900 We are making these investments here in Calgary and in communities throughout the province
00:02:49.940 to ensure that students can learn in exceptional facilities close to home.
00:02:54.880 Advanced Education is proud to work with the University of Calgary
00:02:59.040 to ensure that Alberta students can make the most of the remarkable opportunities here
00:03:03.740 and keep Alberta moving forward.
00:03:06.260 I look forward to seeing the new multidisciplinary hub take shape
00:03:10.340 and all of the wonderful possibilities that it will hold in just a few years' time.
